Ida Svensson (I just found out that the protagonist from this story, who's known as 'Michel' in Germany is really 'Emil' in Astrid Lindgren's original books. :( Apparently they didn't want a mix-up with a famous German children's book charakter.)

Okay, I googled this. Xan can be short for Alexander or an alternate spelling of Khan.

Xan is a character is a P.D. James novel which I have not read, "Children of Men."

Maybe you wonder how a tree can be thought as a character, but I do, because it plays an active role in happenings. :)
