Hi,
I already sent little souvenirs to the mentors of two TVs I hosted. Could we make a list with things that are not allowed to be sent in certain countries?

A friend of me visited Australia some years ago and she told me that it was forbidden to import any food to Australia, not even small packages of sweets. Then I know that food which contains gelatin is sometimes forbidden because of BSE and so on.

Of course no host will send a handbag made of snakes or alligators but I'm sure that it might happen that someone sends items that are forbidden to enter a country but we don't know this because we think it's completely harmless.

Maybe this might be the reason why some TVs disappear without a trace (perhaps the complete envelope is confiscated in such case?).

Great idea for a Topic listing - I sent someone in Australia some biscuits, not realising food was forbidden. Whoops.

Here are the things you are NOT allowed to send into the UK:

"prohibited or restricted goods such as drugs, indecent or obscene material, weapons, endangered species and counterfeit goods" (taken from HM Revenue & Customs website)

OH NO!  :o I recently sent a lollipop in a package to Australia. I had no idea you couldn't send food there. I hope that it makes it.  :( If not then I at least hope that they will leave the other items in the package (there were NO TV's in the package).

Here is a list of what is restricted and prohibited to send to the Netherlands:

    *  weapons and ammunition
    * child porn
    * medicines
    * drugs
    * certain foodstuffs
    * endangered non-domestic species of fauna and/or flora
    * meat and meat products
    * plants and flowers
    * counterfeit goods
    * goods that may be used to manufacture drugs (precursors)
    * cultural goods
    * fireworks
    * substances that deplete the ozone layer (for example spray cans containing chloroethene)
    * cadmium-containing substances

This is actually a list of products which you are not allowed to purchase via the Internet and ship them to the Netherlands, but I think this is the same for any shipment to the Netherlands. For more information, check out: Douane.nl

Hum... I must confess that I sent several times candies or food (such as French crepes, or chocolate or sweets) in Australia or in the USA. I usually don't write on the customs paper that the package contains food (by the way, for me it is not very clear : what do they call "food" exactly ?? I don't think sending a lollipop or so is a problem, I think they rather forbid things such as fresh products... no ?)... So I usually choose not to tell exactly what my package contains (it is just a little lie, isn't it ?), for exemple if it contains a toy or a book AND candies, I just say it contains the toy or the book.
I never had problem with that, but maybe it is not a good advice to do as I do !!!!  :cyclops:

I think there are nothing really forbidden in France excepted all the things as in the others countries such as drugs, weapons etc... what seems normal !

Food like lollipops I've had no trouble receiving from hosts in other countries. When Isobel sent the biscuits, customs opened the package but let the package - and the biscuits, which were yummy by the way! - go through. I think its more fresh foods and vegetables that causes issues? Can anyone else clarify??

sausages, salami and sliced meats

In Canada these are not allowed:

Replica or Inert Munitions
Tobacco
Firearms (including imitation and replica firearms)
Intoxicating Beverages
Drugs and Other Controlled Substances
Medical/Biological Materials
Perishable Items
Liquids, Liquefiable Substances and Powders
Animals
Plants

Plus 'other misc prohibited items' which include envelopes with a lot of writing other than addresses and Canada Post stuff, gold (and gold dust) and 'any item emitting an offensive odour.'

Some of that is because it's standard procedure everywhere, and some is because we're next to the States and have to prohibit a most of what they prohibit.

Here's link to the Finnish Post and their list of prohibited things:

http://www.posti.fi/english/pricesandinstructions/prohibiteditems.html

The usual; guns, drugs, exploseives, money...

But I do agree with BunTraveler about the chocolate ;) As much as I love it it can be messy even in our temperatures (which can be high in the summer).

I think they mean one-of-a-kind cultural objects, such as stones from monuments, paintings, generally anything that should only travel with proper authorizations and care. Things like souvenirs or books could be considered cultural but I don't think that's what they meant.
