Hi,
I already sent little souvenirs to the mentors of two TVs I hosted. Could we make a list with things that are not allowed to be sent in certain countries?
A friend of me visited Australia some years ago and she told me that it was forbidden to import any food to Australia, not even small packages of sweets. Then I know that food which contains gelatin is sometimes forbidden because of BSE and so on.
Of course no host will send a handbag made of snakes or alligators but I'm sure that it might happen that someone sends items that are forbidden to enter a country but we don't know this because we think it's completely harmless.
Maybe this might be the reason why some TVs disappear without a trace (perhaps the complete envelope is confiscated in such case?).

Great idea for a Topic listing - I sent someone in Australia some biscuits, not realising food was forbidden. Whoops.
Here are the things you are NOT allowed to send into the UK:
"prohibited or restricted goods such as drugs, indecent or obscene material, weapons, endangered species and counterfeit goods" (taken from HM Revenue & Customs website)

OH NO! I recently sent a lollipop in a package to Australia. I had no idea you couldn't send food there. I hope that it makes it. If not then I at least hope that they will leave the other items in the package (there were NO TV's in the package).

Here is a list of what is restricted and prohibited to send to the Netherlands:
* weapons and ammunition
* child porn
* medicines
* drugs
* certain foodstuffs
* endangered non-domestic species of fauna and/or flora
* meat and meat products
* plants and flowers
* counterfeit goods
* goods that may be used to manufacture drugs (precursors)
* cultural goods
* fireworks
* substances that deplete the ozone layer (for example spray cans containing chloroethene)
* cadmium-containing substances
This is actually a list of products which you are not allowed to purchase via the Internet and ship them to the Netherlands, but I think this is the same for any shipment to the Netherlands. For more information, check out: Douane.nl

Hum... I must confess that I sent several times candies or food (such as French crepes, or chocolate or sweets) in Australia or in the USA. I usually don't write on the customs paper that the package contains food (by the way, for me it is not very clear : what do they call "food" exactly ?? I don't think sending a lollipop or so is a problem, I think they rather forbid things such as fresh products... no ?)... So I usually choose not to tell exactly what my package contains (it is just a little lie, isn't it ?), for exemple if it contains a toy or a book AND candies, I just say it contains the toy or the book.
I never had problem with that, but maybe it is not a good advice to do as I do !!!!
I think there are nothing really forbidden in France excepted all the things as in the others countries such as drugs, weapons etc... what seems normal !

Food like lollipops I've had no trouble receiving from hosts in other countries. When Isobel sent the biscuits, customs opened the package but let the package - and the biscuits, which were yummy by the way! - go through. I think its more fresh foods and vegetables that causes issues? Can anyone else clarify??

Australia would have to have the toughest restriction laws when it comed to bringing items into our country. Things like lollies/sweets and packaged biscuits will get to us if they are in their proper packaging and don't contain nuts.
dried fruit and vegetables*
instant noodles and rice*

herbal and traditional medicines, remedies, tonics and herbal teas*
snack foods*
biscuits, cakes and confectionery*
black tea, coffee and other beverages
infant formula (must be accompanying a child)
airline food/snacks.
dairy products (fresh and powdered) including milk, cheese and ‘non-dairy’ creamers
dairy products that contain more than 10 per cent dairy – as stated on manufacturers ingredients list
cheese – must be commercially prepared and packaged and originate from countries free from foot and mouth disease
airline food containing dairy including milk, yoghurt and sandwiches containing cheese
all whole, dried and powdered eggs, and egg products that contain more than 10 per cent egg as an ingredient, such as mayonnaise
homemade egg products including noodles and pasta that are not commercially manufactured.
all uncanned meat including fresh, dried, frozen, cooked, smoked, salted or preserved - from all animal species
sausages, salami and sliced meats
airline food including sandwiches containing meat
fish and other seafood products*
pet food – including canned products and rawhide chews
rawhide articles and handicrafts including drums.
cereal grains, popping corn, raw nuts, pine cones, birdseed, unidentified seeds, some commercially packaged seeds, and ornaments including seeds.
all fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables.
all mammals, birds, birds’ eggs and nests, fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects
feathers, bones, horns, tusks, wool and animal hair
skins, hides and furs
stuffed animals and birds (taxidermy certificate required - some may be prohibited under endangered species laws)
shells and coral (including jewellery and souvenirs)
bee products including honey,* beeswax and honeycomb
used animal equipment including veterinary equipment and medicines, shearing or meat trade tools, saddlery and tack and animal or bird cages.
biological specimens including tissue culture*
craft and hobby lines made from animal or plant material
used sporting and camping equipment including tents, footwear, hiking boots, golf equipment and bicycles (need to be checked to ensure they are clean and free from soil contamination)
used freshwater watercraft or fishing equipment including rods and nets, waders, kayaks, paddles and life jackets.
all potted/bare rooted plants, cuttings, roots, bulbs, corms, stems and other viable plant material
banana products including food (fresh and dried) and souvenirs made with banana plant material
souvenirs made with or filled with straw, including Thai cushions
wooden articles and carvings including painted or lacquered items
items that include bark
artefacts, handicrafts and souvenirs made from plant material
mats, bags and other items made from plant material, palm fronds or leaves
straw products and packaging*
bamboo, cane or rattan basket ware and furnishings
potpourri* and coconut shells
Christmas decorations, wreaths and ornaments
dried flowers and arrangements

In Canada these are not allowed:
Replica or Inert Munitions
Tobacco
Firearms (including imitation and replica firearms)
Intoxicating Beverages
Drugs and Other Controlled Substances
Medical/Biological Materials
Perishable Items
Liquids, Liquefiable Substances and Powders
Animals
Plants
Plus 'other misc prohibited items' which include envelopes with a lot of writing other than addresses and Canada Post stuff, gold (and gold dust) and 'any item emitting an offensive odour.'
Some of that is because it's standard procedure everywhere, and some is because we're next to the States and have to prohibit a most of what they prohibit.

Here's link to the Finnish Post and their list of prohibited things:
http://www.posti.fi/english/pricesandinstructions/prohibiteditems.html
The usual; guns, drugs, exploseives, money...
But I do agree with BunTraveler about the chocolate As much as I love it it can be messy even in our temperatures (which can be high in the summer).

I have read through the lists and I understand everything else, but what on earth do they mean in Netherlands by the "cultural goods" which they are prohibiting/restricting?

I think they mean one-of-a-kind cultural objects, such as stones from monuments, paintings, generally anything that should only travel with proper authorizations and care. Things like souvenirs or books could be considered cultural but I don't think that's what they meant.
