Den Bosch, The Netherlands - 4th May 2008

By: Marjolein

Dear Pandamao,

Today is the 4th of May. That means it's Memorial Day in the Netherlands. Today they remember all the people who died in war. Especially in WWII. Marjolein her parents came to visit us today to go to Vught. In Vught was a concentrationcamp until everyone was liberated in September 1944. Vught is a few kilometres from Den Bosch. Marjoleins father made the first beautiful picture, it's of Den Bosch. We went cycling to the concentrationcamp in Vught. Close to the camp was a place where loads of people where killed from the camp. You can see the big cross on the hill. On the white wall you see all the names of people who where killed at that wall. Under the white wall is the original wall, there are still bulletholes in the wall. After the visit to the wall that is now a memorial, we went inside the concentrationcamp. First we went into a building with lots of stories of people who lived in the camp. After this building we went into a barack. People lived in these kinds of buildings. You see the beds people slept in. In this building there are also lots of stories. Nobody had any privacy in the camp. People where allowed to take a shower every ten days and they had to share their water with eight people. On the ground they had built a marquette of the camp. But what made me most sad was the memorial for children in the back of the camp. 1800 children lived in the camp, almost everyone got killed. In the memorial 1269 names are mentioned. There where lots of children who where just a few months. All these poor children! The next building we went into was also not so nice. It was a crematorium. Marjolein made a picture of the oven. On a door in this building where the words: Opslag lijken. Marjolein translated this for me and it means: Storage bodies. We got very sad from this building. There was also a labatorium where people where cut open on a very scary table with a hole in it for the blood to go in. In the concentrationcamps lots of people where tested for loads of stuff. Marjoleins mother heard a story of a lamp made of the skin of jews! The horrors in these camps! I didn't get very happy from this day. But the point of the day is thinking of the war, so it would not happen again. Also every 4th of May Dutch people are quiet for two minutes on eight o' clock. We where in a Spanish restaurant at this time! It was a beautiful restaurant and the tapas was very nice! On the picture with me on it you have to look real closely but the wall looks really cool! And tommorrow Dutch people celebrate their freedom! So you understand I am going to party all day tommorrow!
