Hello! My name is Mandarin my mentor, Sara named me that because of my color... I hope you like me! My goal in life is to make people happy, give lots of hugs and learn about the world before returning home!
I'd love if you could show me your area (inside and outside the house) as much as you can... obviously you don't have to go out of your way but I'm more than happy to ride along in your bag, so long as I'm safe... :-) Sara says I'm going to be going off today to my first host in Hong Kong... how exciting, I hope the trip doesn't take too long... I'll see you again soon mom, promise! <3 |

Hi
It's realy great in Belgium. I went with Kristel (Evelyns sister) to Antwerpen with the train. Here you see some pictures of the train station of Gent (witch we pass before we were in Antwerpen) a big seat for a little toy as me, don't you think? some pastime, searching words Now some pictures of the train station of Antwerpen, a very big station. It's a renewed station with old elements. Do you see me? Kristel told me that she would stay me in the gutter, but that was for laughing, it was very funny to glide in the gutter, faster than that Kristel took the stairs. In Antwerpen, there's a beautiful kathedral. Here some pictures. It's build in 1552. Therefor it was a small church. The word Antwerpen = hand werpen = shed a hand Brabo is the man who has beat a giant. For the victory he truncate the hand of the giant en shed the hand for away. Therefor this statue is build with Brabo who held the hand of the giant, who is lying at his feets. We have seen the letter A of Antwerpen in coffee beans, sucker, ... all things that you drink or eat in the coffee. I miss you. bye kisses |

Hi mommy
It was a quiet day, I don't left the house but I see a lot of things and I worked a little bit. Kristel (Sister of Evelyn) collect everything of pinguins, I have seen a lot of them, I haven't stopped looking at all the things she has. Take also a look mommy In the afternoon I helped Evelyns mother with sewing. The pants of Evelyn and Kristel and their mom are always too long because they are small people, so Annie (mother Evelyn and Kristel) has always work with the pants. Do you show how I have helped? Since May, Kristel and Evelyn follow tennislessons. I have played too, very funny. Normally the lesson is during a hour but the teacher gives always a lesson of one hour and a half, very tiring. Byebye kisses |
Evelyn Posted Aug 29, 2008, 9:01 pm |

This week there are only teachers at school but monday, all the students will return to school. the first photo is the little church of the school than you see the playground And now you see the office of Evelyn. She works with two persons in that office. She and her collegue Ann (Ann does the personel in school) After school, Evelyn went to her house under construction. She's building a home for her and her friend Eric. Because now she lives with her parents and her sister. So that was a working day for Evelyn, tomorrow we go to the beach in Oostende because they say that it will be sunny weather (I hope so) bye |

Evelyn Posted Sep 8, 2008, 8:12 pm |
this is the wharf. You can go there to make a stroll or to fish. it's nice, but we only saw it alone the seaside.
On the left you find... On the right you find... apartments....yeah... with view on the sea. The sea was far away when we went. The ebb was earlier in the day. Evelyn told me that when I got lost I had to go to the big ball. Every couple of meters there's a pile with a figure on it. (like the ball) every little child (or toyvoyager has a bracelet with that same figure. so little ones don't get lost or get faster found when they're are found by some poeple, because the parents sitting by that figure. this system is an inventing that won in a game to do something about the numbers of children that get lost every year at the coast. Some other countries has taken this system too. an other example... this buoy has stranded at the coast because the water was so far away. usually you have to swim to it! this is a breakwater. sometimes it's very dangerous because a lot of water get over it and submerge you. Evelyn told me that, when she was little, she went on the breakwater to catch krabs. (she catched a mussel on a string and the krab took the mussel and she took ik out of the water) little krabs in shells... This is the casino of Middelkerke. This are range huts. Little huts on the beach you can rent in the summer so you can put all your stuff in it that you need on the beach. this is a 'go car'... at our sea you find them a lot. Childeren, young people, even old people have a lot of fun on it. Middelkerke is famous in Belgium for the comic figures. Every year there's a comic festival and you can buy a lot of comics and picture tales. Every year, with the festival, they put another statue in bronz of another comic figure at the coastside. I don't know if you know them but these are little blue ones (the smurfs) This is Jommeke, a little boy with yellow hear. He has a parrot (Flip) pet. With his friends he get a lot of adventures. I think you know lucky luke... This is Robbedoes and kwabbernoot. So this was Middelkerke, a nice city at the sea. I liked it very much! kisses xxx |
Evelyn Posted Sep 15, 2008, 7:38 pm |
Hey Mom,
I went today to Brussel. It's the capital of Belgium. We made a stop in Zaventem. It's a little village next to Brussel. It's the place where the biggest fly field of Belgiums stands. There, you can watch the plains come down. It was so nice to watch big plains getting over me with only a few meters between us. In front of the control tower... Then we went to Brussel city. I saw the royal palace. That's were the king goes to do his job. (Not where he lives, that's in Laken) It's a symbol to ours monarchy. before the fence... (but they didn't let me in... I think they were scared of my size ) The Belgium flag...black, yellow and red!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the Belgium king is a big man, because he has big clothespins in the colors of the flag. this is the old theatre...It's not in use, but it's a beautiful building. this is the music museum...Great building and a beautifull collection. I little parc (Green in the city wiiiiii) Mommy, the following pictures are on the big market. The town hall stands there and the buildings around it are magnificent. they are old, but has a lot of sociable environment. It's nice to walk there. This statue of a lady brings good luck to all who caress it. So I caress it a lot! Brussel is famous because it's bobbin lace. This is 'manneke pis', that means 'little boy who pisses' (go to the bathroom). The little boy saved the city of a big fire when a wick (coal dust) get switched on and the city was almost distroyed. the little one is 58 cm heigh and on special days in the year he has a costume on. (he has more than 700 costumes) This is the Saint Hubert gallery. It's a showroom for beautifull and expensive shops. One of the shops is of DELVAUX. It's a very very very expensive mark for handbags/cases. You see it right, 1900 and 920 EURO for one bag! It's crazy mom! but a lot of rich Belgiums has one of these. (Evelyn doesn't haha) This is 'het beenhouwerstraatje' = little street of butchers. it's famous in Brussels for good, little and cosy restaurant. At dinertime the chef of the restaurant stands outside to lure costumers. In one of the little streets next to butcherstreet is a little statue of a girl, a girlfriend or sister, of manneke pis. She's also going to the bathroom. her name is Jeanneke pis. This is the building for the money grant. When it was already dark (21:30) the shops (souvenirs, delicacy) in Brussel Centrum are still open. This is a tradional biscuits shop, it's very old-fashioned but for this reason very attractive. I saw a church that looks a lot like the notre dame in paris. than, for closer, we drank something at the big market. I ate a cookie too... It was a nice day. Now it's dark, I'm tired...so bye bye SMAK! |
Evelyn Posted Sep 22, 2008, 6:52 pm |
today we stayed home to play with the animals. It was so nice.
The dog (Eric's dog) sniffed a lot at me, but he didn't bite so i think he found me nice! I liked him to! I played in the running wheel of one of the hamsters. It was a crazy ride. But I met Meekho the Hamster of Kristel and he gave me some tips to do it better and faster! so I see this animal world by (pink) sunglasses! |

Along the water you can sit. typical buildings, the city is very old...but nice! The castle in the middle of the city... the big church... with a very very big bell! do you see me? This red canon has a name 'Dulle griet' = dulle brill = angry women of red devil. It's from the middle ages. 15the century. It was for strengthening against the Spanish. It was an interesting day, I'm happy and enjoy it a lot! bye |

Hi, I arrived to Praha (Prague), the capital of Czechia. I hope I'll have a lot of fun here
|
ondrejliska Posted Nov 4, 2008, 4:55 pm |
Nobody celebrates Halloween in Czechia, although they also have All Saints' Day in their calendar. More important is the All Souls' Day, which falls on 2nd November. On this day (or during the first week in November), people visit graves of their deceased friends and relatives.
So today I visited Olanské hřbitovy (Olany Cemetery), the largest graveyard in Prague. On the picture, you can see the Tyr-and-Fügner Column. In 1862, Miroslav Tyr and Jindřich Fügner founded the Sokol movement, a youth gymnastics organization. ("Sokol" is the Czech for "falcon" - that's why you can see a falcon's sculpture on the top of the column.) |
ondrejliska Posted Nov 18, 2008, 9:12 pm |
My host took me to school today. (Unfortunately, he studies Mathematics, so I didn't understand a single word...)
Right next to his school, there's an interesting architectonic complex called Karlov. It was founded in 1350 by Charles IV (Karel IV.), Holy Roman Emperor and Bohemian King, who is also called Otec vlasti - Father of the Homeland. Here you can see his statue. This church is dedicated to Virgin Mary and Charlemagne. There is also Museum of Police nearby. It seems that they're gonna have some new exhibits... |
ondrejliska Posted Nov 18, 2008, 9:14 pm |
A new toyvoyager arrived today - his name is Mumble and he was so kind that he showed me his journal.
|
ondrejliska Posted Nov 26, 2008, 10:41 am |
I and Mumble played Settlers of Catan today. It was so much fun
|
ondrejliska Posted Nov 26, 2008, 11:09 am |
Do you remember those giraffes I saw in Planckendaele, Belgium? Well, today I met another giraffe. Her name is Dottie Grace and she has travelled a lot.
Bestik came along with her. We talked about our journeys. |
ondrejliska Posted Jan 10, 2009, 12:47 am |
This is me in front of Saint Nicholas Church in Malį Strana ("Lesser Quarter" in Czech).
And this is Charles Bridge, built by Emperor Charles IV in 1357. (Did I mention I saw a statue of that sovereign earlier?) |
Tine1969 Posted Jan 24, 2009, 1:24 pm |
Wow - today I arrived safely in Germany and I met my next host Tine... Tine was really happy to see me and she gave me a big hug.
Because it was the "The dogs want to go on a walk"-time we went outside and visited the lake and the old castle ruin of Alt-Kaster. I also had the chance to see the special owl-tree and the owl-tower of Alt-Kaster. Now I will rest a bit, bye, Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Jan 25, 2009, 11:04 am |
Today the sun was shining when I woke up. I asked my host to go out on a walk again. She told me that it was really cold outside, but for me that didn't matter.
We went again to the little lake and it was great there looking at the ducks and swans. On our way back home I saw an old an old well pump. At first I thought that having a shower would be nice. But my host told me that is was too cold for that. Therefore we only took two photos... I wish you a nice Sunday, Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Jan 29, 2009, 9:59 pm |
Wow - it's still cold here in Germany. On our walk today my host took some more photos of me.
Again we went to the lake and to the ruin of the castle close to Alt-Kaster, when my host live. I am really curious today, because I was told that another toyvoyager will visit us soon. Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Jan 29, 2009, 10:06 pm |
Today we got a nice parcel - and another toyvoyager was inside. Let me introduce Ninny the violet rabbit to you and look at the photos how we meet .
At first Ninny tried to come out of the parcel which wasn't so easy. But she made it. Then I got a nice hug. Ninni had a great postcard of her former host for Tine and me. We both had a look at the nice pictures on it. It's great to have another toyvoyager here - I am happy about that! Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Jan 30, 2009, 11:32 am |
Today Tine, Ninny and I visited the former fortress with the citadelle in Jülich. It was really cold but sunny. We enjoyed walking around the large walls of the citadelle.
Bye, Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Jan 31, 2009, 4:10 pm |
Today Tine had to do her housework first and then we all went to visit the castle of Paffendorf (a small village that belongs to Bergheim) and the castle park.
The weather was cold but sunny again. We enjoyed our walk through the park very much. At first we had a look at the castle. Then Ninny and I climbed on a huge rock (okay, it was only huge for me not for you and other humans). Even Ninny arrived much earlier on top of the rock... Later I found a special tree in the park - look, there was a heart "written" in the tree - a heart with the letters M + J - of course I know M is for Mandarin, but who is J??? I don't know that I love J before and I hope I will meet her soon ! Then we did something which was a bit dangerous - we sat on the water ! At the end of our walk I found a great tree-house for the summer, but Tine told me that this house is not for bears but for birds... Mandarin |

It's still cold outside in Germany. Today Ninny, Tine and I went to the Peringmaar, a lake in the South of Bedburg.
The Peringmaar is very new, some years ago it hadn't been there. I couldn't believe that this is true, but Tine told us that there had been an open cast mining between the Sixties and the Eighties of the last century and now after the end of this industrial period they rebuild the area again. Hav a good Sunday, Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Feb 9, 2009, 8:57 am |
Wow - what a great morning - today new toyvoyagers arrived !
The postwoman rang the bell, Tine opened the door and then she gave Ninni and me an envelope. We opened it - and saw only big, big feet at first... - these feet were so big, much bigger than my own feet! One second later Hurley, the Bigfoot went out of the envelope and we had a nice "Welcome". Then we heard another voice from the inside of the envelope - and another second later, HitchRideMarky came out. Wow - now we are the "Fabulous Four" and I am sure we will have a great time together Mandarin |

Good news - what a great day!!!
At first two new toyvoyagers arrived in the morning. Then Tine told us that we are all going on a holiday to Africa - we will visit Nairobi in Kenia - and we will start in two days. I am a bit nervous but I am happy too. I will meet a lot of children, because we will help Tine with her charity work in two slum schools. Now I have to look at the Kenyan map again and I also want to read of book about Kenya... Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Feb 10, 2009, 7:21 pm |
Today our host was busy the whole day, because she has to organize everything for the trip tomorrow. Therefore we decided to make a cup of coffee for her. Tine was more than pleased about that.
Have a look at our photos - then you can see how we made it. Ninni is the biggest, she put the pad in the maschine. Hurley has the biggest feet, he pressed the button. HichRideMarky and I watched that the whole coffee went into the cup. And at the end Ninni carried the cup to the table where we all sat down. Bye-bye, Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Feb 22, 2009, 11:59 am |
Here we go...
At first we started from Düsseldorf Airport in the early morning to London Heathrow. Everything we on fine for our host and us and Tine took some photos of us, the "Funtastic Four". Mandarin |

Valentines Day is a very important day in Kenya.
In the early morning our toyvoyager group was in our hotel room in Nairobi and we had a discussion what we could do for Tine on that day. Then we had an idea - we counted our Kenyan money and bought a special Valentines card for her. She was very happy about that card and gave us many hugs! Mandarin |

Tine1969 Posted Mar 30, 2009, 3:50 pm |
Today we visited Kwa Watoto School in Soweto - a school for about 800 children in a slum in the east of Nairobi. At first we had been a bit afraid but then we recognized that the children liked us.

Tine1969 Posted Mar 30, 2009, 3:56 pm |
As usual we had breakfast together with our host in the hotel in the morning. We had pancakes, bananas, passion fruits and many other things.
After the breakfast we went to Kwa Watoto school again, where our host did some charity work. Today we helped her when she did some colouring together with the sponsored kids of class 2. Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Mar 30, 2009, 4:07 pm |
After a long day at school we went to the pool on top of the hotel. This was the right thing after a hot and dusty day in the slums. It was really calm and we all rested...

Tine1969 Posted Mar 30, 2009, 4:12 pm |
Today we went to Thika, a smaller city not too far from Nairobi. After visiting a former student we went to the Thika waterfall which was wonderful.

Our last day in Kenya - our last day in the hotel. This was the view from our balcony.
We spent the whole day in the school again. This time the sponsored children of class 3 drew pictures for their sponsors. The children were happy to see us - and we love them too. Bye, bye Africa... Mandarin |

Hi mom!
Today I arrived with HitchaRideMarky at host-mom Avalance here in the Netherlands! She lives in this small place called Bovensmilde. She lives there with her boyfriend and his parents. Until they found their own house. Right now it's not so easy to find a good house with all the crisis around. OH WELL! From the left to the righ you see Mr. Bunny from the USA, HitchaRideMarky, me and Percy also from the USA It's going to be really exciting as my first trip will be going to Germany! *wooohooo* ~Mandarin |

My first trip was going to Germany! Host-mom took all of us with her on her shopping trip to Germany at this huge mall called Centr-O.
Here you see from left to right: Bambi & Nutty (they stay in the car of host-moms friend and protect it!), HitchaRideMarky, me, Percy and Mr. Bunny! We surely had a lot of fun! Here you see me in the huge mall Centr-O. ~Mandarin |

Back in Germany - it was cold, raining every day and we had been sick for a longer time... what a pity!
On the first sunny day we went on a walk to the mill of Grottenherten. Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Apr 10, 2009, 7:33 pm |
Time for a trip again - Tine took us to Magdeburg for the weekend and I enjoyed every minute.
At first we went to a small park close to the cathedral. Then we wanted to see the river Elbe. We had a great walk on the river promenade - during this wak we stopped at a funny monument. There were clocks with different times on this monument. My time was the time of the river Jangtsekiang in China. Before we went back home again, we visited a special bridge sponsored by some inhabitants of Magdeburg - each of them is mentioned on a star. Mandarin |

Wow - Number 5 arrived - and we all welcomed Lady...

Tine1969 Posted Apr 12, 2009, 5:25 pm |
On Sunday we went to Tangermünde by car. It took about one hour - then we arrived in a small town close to the river Elbe. We visited the old part of the town and had a walk on the promenade near the river. At the end we went to a playground and had fun with the stoney donkeys.

Tine1969 Posted Apr 12, 2009, 5:30 pm |
On Monday it was time for leaving again. But before we left Magdeburg we walked to the Hundertwasser House. This house is really special, it doesn't look like a normal house - look at the photo if you don't believe me...
On our way back to the car we saw a funny monument and other things. Mandarin |
Tine1969 Posted Apr 12, 2009, 6:11 pm |
The weather was sunny when Lady arrived. Therefore we showed her the nature around her new home - we started with the plan of the lake and the paths around it. Then - of course - we went to lake. Tine took the first and also the last group photos of us, because at the end of the morning Marky and I left the group and went to our new host.

As it was a lovely day and host-mom had a free day, she went to make some pictures of us in their garden!
Here you see me and their home. They got also a pond, but since there are like heron's and other predators praying on their fishes they have a net over the pond. On this part of the pond they don't have a net, they have wires instead but they are high, we can walk underneath it. They also had lovely flowers and I thought these were so cute! So here you see me sniffing these beautiful flowers. Because it was so sunny and nice, we thought it was to fun to do a bit of sunbathing. As Icarus their dog was enjoying the sun also. After a while we went back in the house again. Since it is soon Easter, they had decorated the house a bit with an Easter theme. Doesn't it look funny ^_^ ? Other than that, we haven't done much. Host-mom was very busy with all kinds of things and was very tired as well. So me and HitchaRideMarky and Mr. Bunny went to play by ourselves. ~Mandarin |

On this day host-mom had to go to Uni for a meeting. We had to go by train. When she go to uni, she first needs to take the bus to go to the trainstation Assen, then she waits there for the train to Groningen. In Groningen she has to take a bus again to get to Uni. This takes over an hour of travelling.
The pictures that you see are taken when we were going home again in the afternoon. Waiting in Groningen still. When I looked outside the window, there was another train waiting as well, it got nice sports pictures on it. As you see the interior of the train is brown and orange (probably these colors because of their country color) LOL! This is 2nd class, there is also 1st class, they got other seats. We cannot sit there. As host-mom got student-pass so she is only allowed to sit 2nd class. I think it's still pretty neat don't you think ^_^ ?! ~Mandarin |

Yesterday was host-mom's birthday, she didn't celebrated her birthday. Nothing was planned and didn't know. But we said to eachother (me HitchaRideMarky and Mr. Bunny) that when Mr. Bunny is leaving, we'll have a surprise for her! Still **happy birthday to you dear host-mom**!
On this free day we went to town to go to the Deercamp in Assen. It's like a mini animal park, but only with deers and here and there some ducks. This is the deer statue of the camp. And these are of course the cool deers! And here are the ducks We all had a great talk! The ducks, deers, HitchaRideMarky and me. Mr. Bunny already had seen them so he watched over us so nothing would happen to us. Don't they look so cute ^_^ ?! Hahaha! Later that day, we went to the carwash, because host-mom is going home this weekend to visit her parents with her boyfriend (then the car needs to look good, *grin*). They will go out for a dinner for her birthday. She's like curious what she'll be getting from her family. Haha! Oh and she got a new bag from her boyfriend. Isn't that sweet?! We are entering the carswash can you see how dirty the car was? Here are we all 3 sitting and enjoying the carwash, hahaha! Have you ever thought we would go into a carwash? LOL! But it was really funny, because we had some jokes to tell to eachother. Some of us bursted in tears. It was really a silly joke. Would you like to hear? Hehehe ~Mandarin |

Today we are in Arnhem. Arnhem is located in the Province Gelderland, and is in the south east of the Netherlands.
We first had a lunch in town and went to visit host-mom's brother. He lives near the water, but he don't got a home near the water as you see on this picture. We thought it was a nice place to make a picture. So here you see me at the bridge. And on this picture you see me with Marky, resting on a rock in front of their house on the playground there. And then later in the afternoon we went to her parents and we saw a strange something sitting on front of their neighbour's front portch! It's a tradition or so when you hit 50 years old "Sara", you'll get this. Family / friends make a doll for you so everyone can see that you hit the 50's !!! ~Mandarin |
Avalance Posted May 19, 2009, 7:44 pm |
Today we didn't do much, but we played with Valentino, host-mom's bunny. He's so cute! Don't you think ^_^ ?
He turned 6 this year, but host-mom hopes he'll stay for some long time. ~Mandarin |
Avalance Posted May 19, 2009, 8:09 pm |
We have never made a picture near her work. Host-mom works in Hoogersmilde, a small place near her home Bovensmilde. It takes around 15 minutes by bus.
On this picture you see me waiting for the bus. The canal you see, is the Drentsche Hoofdvaart, which is 41,8 km long! It was very important back in the days. They used to use boats to carry peat from the one place to the other. Later it became to carry other materials too and now also for fun boat trips. In the picture you cannot see her work, but if you walk 5 min you'll see it, hahaha! ~Mandarin |

As host-mom was very busy with her work and everything, she didn't had much time to take us to other places. Though we went to every place where we haven't been yet, when she could take us.
On 30th April it is Queensday here in the Netherlands. We celebrate our Queens birthday, though it's not really her birthday day. But they choose to celebrate it on the 30th April. We planned to go out for a day sailing. Host-mom and her boyfriend hired a boat and went sailing for like nearly 3 hours! It was beautiful! The place where we went is called Giethoorn. A different name for this place is "little Venice". You know the Venice in Italy. No idea why, but they call it like this. Hahaha! Anyways, after the sailing we went out for a delicious dinner. And then while we were going home, we heard on the car radio that the Dutch Royal Family got attacked! We were shocked to hear this news. There was this guy who drove into people just to hit the bus where the Royal Family was getting transported in, to wave at the people who were celebrating Queensday. The man didn't hit the bus, but instead he hit a stone needle and that was it! (8 people died so far, along those is also the attacker) Even with the sad news, we did had a wonderful day as the day after it was all rainy and cold. ~Mandarin |

This will be the last entry before I am going to Ireland!
I think we had a lucky day again, because on this day we went to the Dutch Truck Grand Prix ADAC Masters Weekend at the TT-Circuit in Assen (and the weather was just fabulous). Assen is a bit famous for the TT-Circuit where a lot of championships are held. Soon also the MOTOGP races. For host-mom it was also the first time she ever went to such event. It was really cool, we made a few pictures, and watched the races. We went around 11 am and got home in the afternoon. Around 4 pm. Hahaha Anyways, I really had a wonderful time here in the Netherlands, I learned a lot and I hope my next trip will be as good as this one! Love, Mandarin |
