This morning, host mom took us to see the community corrections garden that is maintained by the county jail. The motto is "Building Character Through Gardening." We met a super nice lady there, who told us about how she works with the inmates in the garden. Being a small town with a large jail, our county houses a lot of female inmates from the bigger cities, when they have overflow. She often works with people who have never, ever gardened and have no idea about plants or where vegetables come from. One day, she was working with a group of ladies and handed them each a radish, plucked from the ground, and they stood around, and finally one said, "What am I supposed to do with this?" She said, "You eat it." The lady thought a while, then said, "I can't eat it, it's dirty." The nice lady explained all vegetables grow in dirt and you just have to wash them off. The lady argued a bit, so she showed her how to wash it with the hose and try it. The lady tried it, gobbled it down, and then her whole face lit up, and she exclaimed, "I like dirty food!"

We are helping Anastaysia on her goal of visiting 10 cemeteries, so the host family took us to visit Iola's new cemetery. There are stones that date back into the 20s, so it's not THAT new. They looked for their friend, Patty, who succumbed to breast cancer last year, but could not find her stone. Her daughter had said it had roses on it, but there were so many that had roses, that didn't help narrow the search!

Host mom had to take a trip to the airport very early this morning. She watched the moon the whole two hour drive, since it was supposed to be a "supermoon" today. When she got done with checking in her cargo, the moon was nearly to the horizon and kept threatening to go behind the clouds, so the pictures aren't great- but the moon sure was pretty!

The host family were looking for a service project and found a garden that needed weeding. The garden belonged to a lovely lady named Lula, who lives way out in the country. It was hard work and sometimes the kids wanted to quit, but when they looked up and saw Lula's happy smile, it made them work twice as hard :) We made quite a dent, but there's still plenty more to be done... we plan to go back in 2 weeks and do some more :)

No time to meet everyone, because I arrived as my host was leaving to take out some other TVs.  I was very excited to tag along!

In the car I made friends with Luisa, Lola Rabbit, and BlueBunny.

Hi!

Today in America it is Memorial Day!  It is a day to honor and remember fallen soldiers.

We spent the day playing outside in the yard.

Check out this garden.  The leaves are HUGE!

Hi!

Today we took another trip to Wisconsin to try to get some pictures of the state line signs.  We failed again!  There was too much road construction and we couldn't get close enough for a picture.  We will try again soon!

I had a great time anyway.  First we stopped by the Lion's Park.  I looked all over, but I couldn't find any Lions.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-naq1I7dX_tY/T9KrhyQ1ahI/AAAAAAAABUs/vm_sYZ2LKKs/s640/P1070002.JPG

I did find a Pelican.  He was a fun ride.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kv8CYX3kgxQ/T9KrQxcPv6I/AAAAAAAABUQ/pgVJF6rAQCQ/s640/P1060994.JPG

I also found a few horse swings.  I picked the black one.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-woHdLhZXwN8/T9KrQgAm1oI/AAAAAAAABUU/SADkL0toIaU/s640/P1060995.JPG

Next we took a walk down by the St. Croix River.  I saw some Canadian Geese.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-QAl-0QwaEdM/T9KriM9lc8I/AAAAAAAABUk/mGpkeK4LjeQ/s640/P1070003.JPG

It's so pretty here.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-XsG6igKSSBI/T9KruJjTdUI/AAAAAAAABVA/OG-OQIefewo/s640/P1070007.JPG

Check it out!  They have Muskies and Walleyes here.  My host says they are really tasty.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Dm0dhrZUMbg/T9Kr782iwbI/AAAAAAAABVk/o_ibY6pldEo/s640/P1070014.JPG

Further down the river, we stopped to check out the dam.  The water was going really fast!  This dam is the reason the town was named St. Croix Falls.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-8B940r20H6E/T9Kq_pjkFSI/AAAAAAAABSo/B7VgNJ5vL14/s640/IMG_0218.JPG

I did some rock climbing by the river.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-xyUTf-dAF84/T9Kq_2i-epI/AAAAAAAABS0/YfXBW85Q9RM/s640/IMG_0224.JPG

I found some wild raspberries.  We found a few that were ripe.  They are so sweet!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--WWged6nDc8/T9KrABjS9bI/AAAAAAAABS8/365GNyTz3bs/s640/IMG_0225.JPG

I stopped inside the Visitor Center to cool off.  Here I learned all about the St. Croix River.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-kXaiRKVLFMI/T9KrBEf9VqI/AAAAAAAABTc/GNUhdhyyTc8/s640/IMG_0229.JPG

I stood inside a giant clam.  I don't think they really get this big.  I really hope not!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Lh7L6N3sUDI/T9KrAz15qNI/AAAAAAAABTQ/wZ1IWdUF-EA/s640/IMG_0228.JPG

I learned about the Silver Carp.  They are an invasive fish that they are trying to keep out of the river.  Looks big enough to eat me in one bite!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WVipwqT4LeI/T9KrBEBwEfI/AAAAAAAABTg/Lc-zEXAWuOY/s640/IMG_0230.JPG

Before we left, I saw an American Flag.  Just below it is a Wisconsin Flag.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-xAuI92oa_cE/T9Kq_stIlSI/AAAAAAAABSk/6iPrww3AcxI/s640/IMG_0221.JPG

I had a great time, but today was just too hot!  I'm really hoping we get back soon and get pictures of the state signs.

Bye for now!

Hello!

Today we visited the Mall of America.  This Mall is HUGE!  Four stories of shops, plus an indoor amusement park called Nickelodeon Universe!  The park looks like so much fun!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-rk6gNfIATtQ/T-KWsRK2I8I/AAAAAAAABfw/Wmnvk824Pvo/s640/P1070073.JPG

Here's the fish!  Underneath the Mall there is a giant aquarium full of fish, sharks, and turtles.  Tubes in the bottom allow us to walk through and see everything without getting wet - or eaten!

This is one of the smaller tanks.

The Rainforest Cafe looked very cool.  In the restaurant, they have lots of animal statues.  Every 30 minutes, they shut off the lights and have a thunderstorm and the apes go crazy!

After all that walking, my poor little feet were so tired.  We stopped for a few minutes and rested on this bench.  This bench is a model of the bench from the movie Forrest Gump.  I was hoping that the chocolates would be tasty, but they are not real.

Hi!

Today is the Summer Solstice.  It is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.  I was really hoping to go out and enjoy some of the sun, but it rained all afternoon.  It's still raining now.

I did sneak outside for a few minutes to watch the sunset.  It was just to pretty to miss!

I'm really starting to wonder about this host you sent me to.  This time when we went out, she forgot her camera.  What kind of person goes out to take pictures without a camera???  At least she had her iPad with to take a few pictures.

We drove up to St. Paul for some walking and some bread.  I found this mural on the wall outside the bread store.  It's old, and peeling, but still awesome!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JOn2KCzOB9k/T-pyR0S1P7I/AAAAAAAABhM/Y8z9nBwNqeI/s640/IMG_0477.JPG

We walked past Macalester College.  It's a Liberal Arts College.  It is very old, with lots of old buildings.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-hfKwdX32wA8/T-pyRvx_suI/AAAAAAAABhs/FBDs7d0_I9E/s640/IMG_0479.JPG

After all our walking, we stopped by the Breadsmith and Jamba Juice.  I had an awesome banana smoothie and a mini chocolate babka roll.  It was then perfect size for me!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-CrOctTf1NxE/T-pyRkAlSpI/AAAAAAAABh0/Gh0BMo8uzfE/s640/IMG_0480.JPG

On the drive home, I found a tower!  It's called the Highland Park Water Tower, but I think I want to live here after I am done traveling.  Imagine the parties I could have up there at the top!  Now I just need to find some disco lights...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-q9C1iBVGGTw/T-pySP0HPaI/AAAAAAAABhc/XwqVeozOnAg/s640/IMG_0482.JPG

I had a very fun day.  Maybe my host isn't all bad.  We will see.

Hello!

July 4th is America's Independence Day.  A lot of people celebrate by watching fireworks.  Even though we are in the middle of a heat wave, we decided to venture out and watch some too.

My host won some tickets to ride the Fireworks Train.  First a scenic train ride, than fireworks!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aa4a5ghqKz0/T_XHWnL3V_I/AAAAAAAABss/1sl0rzCz034/s640/P1070144.JPG

It's still very hot, but the train ride was fun!  With the windows open, we could cool down a little.  So many trees!  The conductor had to stop the train once to move a tree that fell on the tracks.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-MsKk-fRHrew/T_XHh9d0g2I/AAAAAAAABr0/ZwCWb6H2XEI/s640/P1070146.JPG

Here we are relaxing on our blanket waiting for the sky to get dark.  The sun has finally gone down, and it is cooling off a little.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1RVAgEYwXz4/T_XH-wQGyNI/AAAAAAAABsA/Dopk4o4bQ8Y/s640/P1070148.JPG

Getting dark!  My orange glow stick makes it easy to find me in the dark.  Without it, I would be very hard to see.  The wait is almost over!  Look at all the people who came out to see the fireworks.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ca6tq4MpKOs/T_XHsSvUNSI/AAAAAAAABsI/H4uHBy7zkY8/s640/P1070150.JPG

The tree blocked out view a little, but the fireworks were amazing!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-nRIhMV1JJ6E/T_XH9LKgT7I/AAAAAAAABs0/Z0SQ9fozTIs/s640/P1070158.JPG

After the fireworks, we took the train back.  It stayed very hot all night, but it was a wonderful adventure.

Hi Mum!

Tonight my host was busy hanging out at a place called The Nerdery with some friends.  It is an office building, so I decided to do a little exploring on my own.  I was really hoping to find  snack to fill my little belly.

After finding this sign, I knew it was ok to wander around.  This is definitly a dog friendly place!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E_-H5fjyB7w/T_oIkXGzpYI/AAAAAAAABvk/XRaIRbaf8J8/s800/P1070194.JPG

These people love nerds!  Looks like there are a lot of nerds that work here.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EhorpXCxyho/T_oIq-FfSSI/AAAAAAAABvo/TIwq5LOVmZE/s800/P1070214.JPG

I made a few new friends.  This is Pikachu.  She just sits around here all day.  I wonder if she is a nerd too?  She doesn't know where they keep the food, so I will keep looking.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tL7FtCmR1dA/T_oIwhDehBI/AAAAAAAABvw/u8aeeC_lV38/s800/P1070211.JPG

Wall-e is a robot.  He said that he was in a movie, but I haven't seen it yet.  He doesn't have any food either.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-yMzkQs59CsA/T_oI54_rUBI/AAAAAAAABv4/YE1noPQ8deY/s800/P1070201.JPG

Mr. Potato Head was cool.  He likes to talk a lot!  He looks like food, but I would never eat a friend!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-nFw7oSURhpM/T_oI9AFFSlI/AAAAAAAABwM/3SBa9LPicpU/s800/P1070198.JPG

Mauro is from a movie called Rio.  He isn't a traveling toy like me, so he really enjoyed hearing about all my adventures.  He told me that he had seen a banana laying around somewhere, but he couldn't remember where.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0_FVl2Z2U0M/T_oI9jOwRQI/AAAAAAAABwU/qXbe-KAJUN0/s800/P1070225.JPG

This robot was hard to talk to.  I asked about the snacks, and all he said was beep beep beep.  I think his name is R2D2.  Once he started beeping at me, he wouldn't stop, so I had to sneak away.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--ON9HQa7AZs/T_oJN_P4BDI/AAAAAAAABwg/sq5o_3qQQ0s/s800/P1070199.JPG

I saw a coffee cup and got my hopes up.  As I got closer, I could see that it was full of paper.  Who drinks paper?  Not me!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6FxzJDBTPw0/T_oJPqXY_tI/AAAAAAAABwo/rAbAR3yT4lw/s800/P1070197.JPG

This little dog told me where to find the doggy treats!  I think he's my favorite!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qPMaayNe_bE/T_oJK5AZKhI/AAAAAAAABw0/efYtq3GXDv8/s800/P1070230.JPG

Finally!  Only one problem...  I was just not able to get this container open.  ARG!  I pounded on it, and pulled on it, and nothing worked.  Sadly, I will have to look elsewhere for a snack.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-yzc_Nz450RU/T_oJYvTjOCI/AAAAAAAABw8/0n9sDWEef4o/s800/P1070223.JPG

This robot was no help.  I think he wanted to shoot me with his laser.  RUN!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_nzTRaJS_y8/T_oJhRTOfYI/AAAAAAAABxI/aCxKuCd0X-c/s800/P1070187.JPG

I was so tired, I was ready to give up.  Finally, I found a snack!  I LOVE Bananas!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-HCdbnL1Kw28/T_oJjHIG0YI/AAAAAAAABxQ/muPlw8MSYFc/s800/P1070185.JPG

After my belly was full, I wanted a quick nap.  Looking around to find a good nap place took me to this place.  It is the command center for a Star Trek space ship.  Since no one else is here, that makes me Captain!  MAKE IT SO!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-uqMSw3wMdpY/T_oJlzlMJII/AAAAAAAABxc/lNWQrkcuFwY/s800/P1070257.JPG

Wow!  Now this is blue!  It is also very soft.  I will settle down for a quick nap while I wait for my host to take me home.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-7219dej0lu4/T_oJpq8NpoI/AAAAAAAABxk/THpyIZ1dZaM/s800/P1070227.JPG

Good night!

Today we started our road trip!  First stop was in Merrill, Wisconsin.  Here we found a nice park.  After a long time in the car, it was nice to get out and relax!

This park is very pretty, with lots of green growing things and little streams.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-EqR5W-6cd0s/UBAoIUIXfgI/AAAAAAAAB2A/rezionMTPlY/s640/P1070300.JPG

I love this stone bridge.  Very cool!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-FTJAJq0fpsM/UBAoKMSo-FI/AAAAAAAAB2E/T-ns96dY-DY/s640/P1070301.JPG

I heard rumors of a 100 year old snapping turtle that may reside around this area.  I looked very hard, but I couldn't find him.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-7Mv-u9-eQv4/UBAoZlN29-I/AAAAAAAAB2U/xQVHXh9QH6o/s640/P1070303.JPG

This was just a little waterfall, but still cool.  In the water, I saw a crayfish.  It looked like a baby lobster!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-KMyvY1X2hFY/UBAoso5DzrI/AAAAAAAAB2g/qMMZ-tlgato/s640/P1070305.JPG

Almost time to get back in the car.  Guess where to next?

We made it to Green Bay!  Green Bay is home to the Green Bay Packers - an American Football team.  First we took a walk downtown.  This statue was HUGE!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a8dmbVYvXUc/UBAo_N7WdkI/AAAAAAAAB24/1zDpGNG4CCc/s640/P1070310.JPG

We found a little park to run and play at.  Soon, lots of kids showed up and we had a great time!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Zv7eH_XvWfo/UBApGOK4B0I/AAAAAAAAB3E/QTv9IZiBEQ0/s640/P1070314.JPG

At last we came to Lambeau Field.  This is where the Green Bay Packers play their at home games.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gl2myDxZ2LU/UBApUeu5esI/AAAAAAAAB3Q/VEqOrWmE5eM/s640/P1070316.JPG

We had to walk all the way around to the other side to get in.  They had entrances all over, but only this one was open today.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s2_N1_gHPX0/UBApebWbDdI/AAAAAAAAB3c/oCnO7Illw0c/s640/P1070318.JPG

Sadly, since there wasn't a game today, we couldn't watch them play or go see the field.  This is part of the training area, and I believe back there right above my head is where they practice!

Hello!

Today I met some new animal friends.

This is Oliver.  He's a Shih Tzu Bichon dog.  He just likes to relax.  I asked, but he doesn't have any black schnauzer friends.  He said he'll look around the doggy park for me!

This is Puzzles.  He's a rat.  He was very excited to see me.  He wouldn't be still long enough to get a good picture.

His brother Slinky was a little more relaxed.  He just wanted to know if I had any snacks for him.

HI!

Tonight, we are in St Paul.  We had plans to leave the city to see the Perseid Meteor Shower at it's peak, but the clouds blocked the view.

I decided that we should take a walk and check out some dog parks in the city.  The first one we found is called Wacouta Commons.  It is a nice park for dogs, and people too.  I really wanted to play in the water fountain.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MJq25mfQKdU/UCfuzQzCd2I/AAAAAAAAB64/Lbx2IPA36sk/s640/P1070430.JPG

This beautiful place is called Mears Park.  There is a stream that runs through it with water fountains, but the water was shut off this late at night.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Wl5McMDu95k/UCfvTH4K0cI/AAAAAAAAB74/euqz17tie7o/s640/P1070439.JPG

I was a little worried that I would get in trouble without a leash, but it was ok.  Don't worry, I didn't leave a mess for you to clean up!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-sY_bIQL0PL4/UCfvOECXt-I/AAAAAAAAB7w/3xVjNCrKbhQ/s640/P1070438.JPG

It was a beautiful night!  The city lights were beautiful!  After walking around so much, we were all very tired.

Good Morning!

This morning, we decided to make sugar cookies for breakfast.  What tasty fun!  My new friend bolly and my old friend BlueBunny were very excited to help.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2XP3o7kIXqk/UDO5KmbBArI/AAAAAAAAB9g/DO_MGELsE7w/s640/P1070446.JPG

Rolling out the dough was hard work, and I think we all got a little bit of flour on us.  Because I'm black, I look so very dirty now.  Don't worry, it shakes right off!

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5cPyUyjYX4Q/UDO5RXNHOMI/AAAAAAAAB9w/nVPkVb0ItUI/s640/P1070447.JPG

I choose a giraffe shaped cookie for me.  My cookie will be taller than me!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-6BlaKE9gYxA/UDO5M3ggjZI/AAAAAAAAB9o/zeO562VN-mY/s640/P1070448.JPG

Now the cookies are ready to go in the oven.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-iHOvRQ9X-To/UDO5YJFKE5I/AAAAAAAAB94/KdL2xV0qwGE/s640/P1070449.JPG

While the cookies baked, we worked on cleaning up the mess.  I washed the table.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BDUCSpuOM8o/UDO5bqqbXEI/AAAAAAAAB-E/2Y-PYIUX8gU/s640/P1070450.JPG

So pretty...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-MUWYitY3pHk/UDO5sct3NmI/AAAAAAAAB-g/_GHC0zMQ0zs/s640/P1070454.JPG

And tasty too!  This is what I want for breakfast every day!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-rVr0shm2gMg/UDO5wwcKqcI/AAAAAAAAB-o/CRQJ50eM6is/s640/P1070455.JPG

I wish I could send one home to you, but I think we ate them all!

Today I took a trip to try to meet an elf.  Mr. Little Guy is a little elf who lives in a tree next to Lake Harriet.  It really is a beautiful lake.  If I wasn't having so much fun traveling, I think I would like to live in a place like this.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zpTav9u8TZo/UGMlVEUvESI/AAAAAAAACSU/Q6VzoWV_gC4/s640/P1070577.JPG

Finally, I found the right tree.  This is the house of Mr. Little Guy.  He lives here in the Summer.  Many people leave letters or gifts for him, and he writes back.

I knocked on the door, but then I noticed a sign.  It says that he has moved from this cabin to his castle for the Winter.  I guess Minnesota Winters are just too cold for him.  On the side of the tree, I could see the letters he left for his friends.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-SzNl6hCyvF0/UGMlB6I0uFI/AAAAAAAACSI/y1-_KAKr86k/s640/P1070575.JPG

I am a little sad that I wasn't able to meet Mr. Little Guy, but it was still a great adventure to go out to the lake and find his home.

Hello!  It's almost the end of October, and that means... HALLOWEEN!!

Today I am going to carve a pumpkin.  I picked out the biggest pumpkin I could find.  It's HUGE!  With all my tools ready, I am ready to begin.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-j-f2O00BR4w/UI8QDjcm2oI/AAAAAAAACe4/rgw1vfcoa1U/s640/charly1.jpg

I cut off the top, and EWWW!  It's so slimy!  Now I have to clean it all out.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MIfSa8dEc6Y/UI8QDdea-JI/AAAAAAAACes/esygmei-90A/s640/charly2.jpg

That was a lot of hard work, but now I am done.  Next I have to sort out the seeds from the slime.  My host likes to bake them and eat them.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-MRmJfYlFdG4/UI8QEK72lII/AAAAAAAACfA/EENnh8p_Ugk/s640/charly3.jpg

Time to carve a face.  I hope it doesn't turn out too scary!  Don't worry, I am being very careful with the sharp knife.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ElyhdiFxEBU/UI8QEInAuyI/AAAAAAAACfE/flE645lV_4I/s640/charly4.jpg

All done!  How's it look?  On Halloween night, they will put a candle in it and it will light up.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BfbPLFg_tWk/UI8QEf68NdI/AAAAAAAACfI/sdksbeczzwE/s640/charly5.jpg

I won't be here on Halloween.  I am leaving here tomorrow.  My next update will be from sunny and warm Florida!  I can't wait.  Hopefully it's a short trip.

Bye from Minnesota for the last time!

Looks like we are flying across the Atlantic!  Are we heading home? I miss home, but, but I haven't seen much of the world yet!

Wow we are about 17km from Lisbon!!  That's the capital of Portugal!

We are going out to do some sightseeing!

First thing first.  We need some breakfast!  Naturally we want to try the famous pastel de nata with coffee.  It is an egg tart from Portugal.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18543.jpg

We buy the ticket for the subway.  It can be used on buses and trams too.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18535.jpg

Let's check the map to see how we get there.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18536.jpg

We are on the subway now!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18540.jpg

We arrive at the terminal.  Here they have trains too.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18541.jpg

We get outside the terminal to get on a bus.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18546.jpg

Portugal sure looks very different from where I've been before.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18547.jpg

After the bus ride we arrive at our destination, the Azulejo Museum.  Azulejo is a type of painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tilework that was introduced to Portugal by the Moors in the 15th century, and has become a typical aspect of Portuguese culture.  A major aspect of Portuguese architecture, they can be found on the interior and exterior of churches, palaces, houses and even railway or subway stations.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18549.jpg

The museum building looks very old.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18555.jpg

The moment we enter, this azulejo painting of soldier greets us.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18552.jpg

These tiles from the 16th centuries are some of the earliest examples of azulejos.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18558.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18559.jpg

These are examples from the 17th century.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18567.jpg

This is a peony pattern.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18566.jpg

I have to say, the painter is not very good at drawing!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18571.jpg

We see examples of how the tiles are used to decorate churches.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18576.jpg

The corridors are decorated with azulejos too.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18577.jpg

Some of the azulejos are very large in scale.  They can be used to decorate the whole side of a wall in a room, instead of using tapestry.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18583.jpg

Here's an example of tiles along a flight of stairs.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18589.jpg

This one has different flowers, animals and boats in it.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18597.jpg

This one is pretty, isn't it?  Each tile shows a different picture.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18598.jpg

By the 18th century, people certainly can draw much better.  This is depicts maritime and country life.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18603.jpg

I really like the colorful tiles.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18625.jpg

Sometimes a series of tiles are used to tell a story.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18638.jpg

This one is supposedly scenes from China.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18639.jpg

Wow, look at this!  A paranoma of Lisbon.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18634.jpg

Now we go on to some more contemporary designs.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18645.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18646.jpg

We are getting tired, let's take a break.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18594.jpg

Afterwards, we visit the chapel that is also part of the museum.  There are a lot of artifacts on display.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18608.jpg

The ceiling is very beautiful.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18609.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18612.jpg

I see a reproduction of the Last Supper.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18613.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18617.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18619.jpg

The inside of the chapel is very beautiful.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18621.jpg

As we exit, we pass by the workshop area.  Wish we can see the artisans at work.

Today we go explore downtown Lisbon.

We start out at Praça do Comércio.  The square is still commonly known as Terreiro do Paço (Palace Square), because it was the location of the Royal Ribeira Palace until it was destroyed by the great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18652.jpg

We walk through the triumphal arch onto Rua Augusta.  This is a lively pedestrian street with mosaic pavements, outdoor cafes and many shops.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18668.jpg

Here is a newspaper kiosk.  The front page of newspapers are displayed, so people stand there to read them.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18664.jpg

There are souvenir shops too.  Do you see the many rooster figures?  They are called O Galo de Barcelos, and is the unofficial symbol of Portugal.  There is a story behind it.  At a banquet given by a rich landowner in Barcelos, a valuable piece of silver was stolen and one of guests was accused of the theft. He was tried by the court and was found guilty, despite his claim of innocence. On the day he was to be executed, he was brought to the magistrate.  The magistrate was having dinner with his guests. Seeing the cock on the plate, the condemned man said, “If I am innocent, the cock will crow.” The cock stood up from the plate and crowed, and the prisoner was allowed to go free.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18663.jpg

We stop for lunch.  As Portugal is famous for its codfish dishes, we decide to try one.  This one is baked with potatoes.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18661.jpg

This is the Santa Justa Elevator which can take you up for a view of the city.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18670.jpg

Can you see the car passing under the little arc?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18674.jpg

We reach Rossio Square, with the column of Pedro IV in the center and the national theatre behind it.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18681.jpg

There are many shops around.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18679.jpg

This is a beautiful fountain.  In the 19th century the square was paved with cobblestones in wave patterns, a design seen today in many other pavements all over Portugal, and that has spread to Portugal's former colonies from Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to Macao (China).

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18685.jpg

We see an old tram.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18696.jpg

And a modern one!  Running on the same track!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18695.jpg

We find a shop and go in for our daily quota of pasteis de nata!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18690.jpg

What interesting pattern they have on the streets!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18698.jpg

We continue to walk around the streets.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18703.jpg

This is a nice-looking police station but we are not interested in a tour.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18705.jpg

This is the Rossio Railway Station.  What is special about it is its facade, made in Neo-Manueline style unique to 16th century Portugal.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18707.jpg

Look this guy is selling chestnuts!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18710.jpg

We find the funicular tram that will take us to a Miradouro (viewpoint).

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18713.jpg

Let's get on the tram.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18716.jpg

After a few minutes we are up the hill!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18725.jpg

The tram goes up and down the same track, so it has doors on both sides.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18743.jpg

We are rewarded with a nice panorama of the city.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18729.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18731.jpg

Time to leave.  Should we walk down the steep slope or take the tram?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18738.jpg

Hmmmm we are tired.  Let's just hop onto the tram!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/SDC18737.jpg

We find the metro station and take the subway back to the hotel.

Today we are staying in the Alentejo district.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_173241.jpg

It's a small hotel with only 11 rooms.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_172856.jpg

What a nice fireplace it has!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121107_094612.jpg

The wines lined up here in the corridor is from the vineyard.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_171810.jpg

We have a really nice room!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_170631.jpg

You can see the garden from the room.  Let's go out and explore!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_170844.jpg

What a nice pool!  Sadly it's too cold to swim.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_172153.jpg

We can see the vineyard from here. Alentejo is famous for its wine.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_172342.jpg

Harvest is over so we don't see any grapes on the vines.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_173129.jpg

We do see a lot of olives though!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121106_172000.jpg

We try some fresh olives and find out why we never see fresh ones for sale. It's very astrigent!  This place pick their olives to make olive oil.

Today we stop by the ancient city of Santarém for a short time and get to see the city very briefly.

The region of Santarém has been inhabited since pre-historic times. The city was named after Saint Iria (or Irene).

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/20121108_122719_zpseb7ae94b.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/20121108_123137_zpsa359307d.jpg

Today we visit the Alfama neighborhood in Lisbon.  It's the oldest district of Lisbon. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hamma, meaning fountains or baths.  During the times of Moorish domination, Alfama constituted the whole of the city, and it was also the only part of the city not destroyed during the great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake.

First, we have to take the tram to go to Alfama.  There is a long line!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8240/8475489695_471075d29b.jpg[
We wait and wait, and finally our tram comes!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8377/8476573584_a186c65c38.jpg

We get off at Miradouro das Portas do Sol.  This is a statue of St. Vincent, the city's patron saint, holding a boat with two ravens, the symbols of Lisbon.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8247/8475481925_1b95fcbae6.jpg

From the terrace we get a very beautiful view of Lisbon.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8110/8476570444_f8e4e6593c.jpg

The weather is gorgeous and the houses look very lovely viewed from high above.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8225/8476582614_202b7d24a3.jpg

A short walk away is Miradouro de Santa Luzia where we get more views of the city and spot this wall tile.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8250/8475524689_f413fd8180.jpg

There are a lot of souvenir shops around, and we visit some of them.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8086/8476613462_0d223d5eb2.jpg

Look at all the bottles of Port and other wines!  Port is a famous wine from Portugal and here you can see them from different vintages.  New ones to some that are decades old!  Some people buy the wines that are made from years of great harvest, while some buy the ones from their year of birth or anniversary.

We next visit Sé de Lisboa. The Cathedral is the oldest church in the city, it began construction in the year 1147 and had survived many earthquakes.

The main façade of the cathedral looks like a fortress, with two towers flanking the entrance and crenellations over the walls. This menacing appearance, also seen in other Portuguese cathedrals of the time, is a relic from the Reconquista period, when the cathedral could be used as a base to attack the enemy during a siege.

The west façade with a rose window is among the oldest remaining part of the building, from the Romanesque period.

This part is from the Gothic architectural style.

It's time for dinner.

We pass by this building with beautiful azulejo tiles on its facade.

We arrive at the restaurant.

Cervejaria Trindade is the oldest brewery in Portugal.  In 1294 a convent was built on this spot.  Destroyed by fire and earthquake in the 1700s, the remains was purchased and reconstructed as the first beer brewery and factory in  1836.  Here you can see the banner announcing its 175 year anniversary.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8242/8481729181_5ca6b6e10a.jpg

The tiles in this room were designed and decorated back in 1860.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8249/8481727793_55920f1637.jpg

We sip on the beer as we go through the menu.  It's nice they draw pictures of the seafood so we know what they are!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8102/8482818560_734ab3c32e.jpg

First we enjoy a caldo verde.  It means "green broth" and is a popular soup in Portuguese cuisine, made with potato and kale.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8231/8482817250_f8e6a93aa9.jpg

Next we enjoy a codfish dish, another favorite of the Portuguese.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8374/8482816824_13295dba22.jpg

After dinner we walk around downtown a bit.  We see vendors selling roasted chestnuts on the street.  They look delicious!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8112/8482816252_13ae66191a.jpg

We pass by this bookstore in Chiado district.  Founded in 1732, Bertrand is certified by Guinness Book Record as the world's oldest bookstore!

Today we take the bus to Belem.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8513/8506351026_ae488eb369.jpg

We arrive at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.  The monastery is one of the most prominent monuments of the Manueline-style architecture (Portuguese late-Gothic) in Lisbon and is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8245/8505241831_001b26b3bc.jpg

The construction of the monastery and church began on 6 January 1501 (and were completed 100 years later).  The project was funded with commerce from Africa and the Orient.

The monastery was designed in a style that later became known as Manueline: a richly ornate architectural design that includes complex sculptural themes incorporating maritime elements and objects discovered during naval expeditions, carved in limestone.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8110/8506349918_52019843f9.jpg

The local gold-coloured limestone adds a very beautiful aura to the buildings.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8369/8505240643_a26b8d9ce8.jpg

We enjoy looking at the intricate carvings.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8513/8505230971_43ee50abe9.jpg

No wonder it took so long to complete!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8368/8505224999_5ed66e120f.jpg

We go to the second floor of the cloister.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8383/8506330662_38974eff4b.jpg

We next enter the Church of Santa Maria.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8111/8505223999_26515ae3ba.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8373/8506330982_6e71abb657.jpg

This is the entrance of the church.  The tympanum, above the double door, displays, in half-relief, two scenes from the life of Saint Jerome: on the left, the removal of the thorn from the lion's paw and, on the right, the saints experience in the desert.  The Madonna (Santa Maria de Belém) is located on a pedestal on top of the archivolt.

This monastery is really beautiful.

After a very enjoyable visit to the Monastery we go ahead to visit another sight.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8230/8583300420_65660ebfd6.jpg

Look at this beautiful tower by the  Tagus river!  It's called the Belem tower.  It is one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal and also UNESCO World Heritage Site, like the nearby Jerónimos Monastery we just visited.  The tower was constructed on a small island but with development the shoreline changes and now it's right by the shore.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8519/8582199191_3b54321f39.jpg

On the Gothic-rib-vaulted ground-floor bunker, there are canons along the niches.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8510/8583292774_f9fd7ae581.jpg

The bartizans, cylindrical watchtowers, are topped by Moorish-looking cupolas.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8247/8583291714_4206866706.jpg

Now we will climb up the tower. (I am in the photo but I'm a little too short and the sun was strong so my host couldn't see the viewer very well...)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8370/8583291986_b66d1ba5fe.jpg

What a beautiful view of the city!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8090/8583291366_88d97e5030.jpg

Here we get a nice view of the river with its bridge.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8249/8583291194_ab1bc61f17.jpg

This is the inside hall of the tower.

Nice view indeed!  A beautiful day!

The Monument to the Discoveries is a 52 metre-high slab of concrete erected in 1960 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. The monument is sculpted in the form of a ship's prow, with dozens of figures from Portuguese history following a statue of the Infante Henry sculpted in base relief.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8249/8582189553_f93c474dbe.jpg

After all the sight seeing we are a bit hungry.  Time for a coffee break!  Wow looks like everybody is hungry and lining up for food!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8520/8580857537_f002630449.jpg

The cafe has been around since 1837!  What's so special about it?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8517/8581958478_92a436e68c.jpg

Ahh, we are here for the pastéis de nata!

The counter is very busy w all the customers!

The tarts in the photo looks delicious!!  Where are the real things?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8086/8580856365_5ae3662485.jpg

We pass by the kitchen.  Look, there are the tarts!!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8094/8581957728_51c298973a.jpg

Lots and lots of them!  I want the whole tray!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8226/8580855959_14ba7b5974.jpg

We look at the menu, but of course we know what we want!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8378/8580857141_e1b92c3343.jpg

Hey waiter, where is the waiter?

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8385/8581958184_894e9626f4.jpg

We want some fresh from the oven, hot pastel de nata with a delicious cup of coffee!!

How sad but tonight is our last night in Portugal!  We decide to have a little something special to remember it by.

We go to a restuarant.  First, we order some pata negra.  The black Iberian pig is from Spain and Portugal, and the best ones roam free in oak forest and eat a diet of acorns.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8505/8587656500_d9d011acd4.jpg

We also get some delicious Portuguese cheese and bread.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8099/8587656240_b81830077a.jpg

Now the best:  a glass of Madeira from year 1850!!  That's very very old wine!  And of course it's very delicious and memorable, perfect to celebrate our last night in town!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8103/8586555651_310c98bc7c.jpg

We are a bit sad as we leave and go to the station to take the subway home.  This is the Rococo station.

Today is our last day in Portugal.  Before we leave we have a little bit of time, and we decide to go get some delicious Portuguese bread and pasteis de nata to take home.

We arrive at the Largo do Chiado (Chiado Square). The famous Café A Brasileira is not open yet, but we can see the statue of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa sitting outside.  This is one of the oldest cafe in Lisbon.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8509/8586553949_0050fe6639.jpg

We walk around the neighborhood a bit.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8530/8611346396_6d469f9512.jpg

Here we are at the Praça Luís de Camões.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8391/8586553469_eff184fdd2.jpg

Ah, the familiar tram 28, which we rode a few days ago!  Goodbye little tram!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8520/8611348908_1933df8777.jpg

We spot this little shop selling coffee and tea.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8114/8610241089_a765b73c6e.jpg

We find the bakery we are looking for.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8258/8611348426_7ff74bf6ee.jpg

Everything looks delicious.  We have some lugguage space so we decide to fill it with fresh bread!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8529/8610241793_aac252b716.jpg

Now when we get home we can munch on the bread and recall the fond memories of our travel!

Adeus Portugal!

We are now back in Florida. Today we go visit an attraction called Coral Castle.  It's built by the man in the picture, Edward Leedskalnin.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00002_zps2a947502.jpg

Well this is a very old sign. The admission is definitely not 10 cents now!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00005_zps66c8f82e.jpg

Hmm I wonder what we will see?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00067_zpsde4a215b.jpg

There is a sign that says "Ring Bell Twice".  In the past, visitors would drop a coin and then ring the bell to enter.  Leedskalnin was very strict about "ring bell twice".  If the visitors rang it too many times or only once, he would not let them in till they got it right!  He sure sounds like a weird fellow!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00064_zpsbdd6eb42.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00063_zpseedc6454.jpg

The whole place is built with big limestone!  According to our guide, the man who built the castle, Edward Leedskalnin, was eccentric indeed.  He came from Latvia after his sweet 16 broke up their engagement the night before marriage.  He lived alone and built this whole place by himself, craving and moving stones weighing many tons, never letting anyone see him work!  There is a lot of mysteries and legends about how he built the whole place, people claiming to peek in at night and saw him levitated the stones around!  Not to mention the man was only 5 ft tall!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00026_zpsfa689236.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00017_zpse6cc8307.jpg

Here are some lounge chairs for you to rest in.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00007_zpse0e00cce.jpg

This board meeting table is craved in the shape of the state of Florida.  The puddle of water in the center is Lake Okeechobee.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00011_zpsd8fff049.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00013_zpsc8da49df.jpg

These are the "beds" though they must be very uncomfortable.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00059_zps6e134a94.jpg

And a bathtub!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00031_zps29d73837.jpg

This table is carved in the shape of heart.  Some visitors liked to propose or renew their vows at this table.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00035_zpsb0d99bbd.jpg

The sundial is accurate within minutes.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00015_zps46bb6242.jpg

Oh a dungeon!  I wonder what creepy creatures live in there?  Well, our guide said this was where he stored his food, keeping it cool underground.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00029_zps24998dad.jpg

And a well for nice, cool water.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00039_zps7c5ea7bf.jpg

Guess what this is?  His stove!  He put food inside the metal ball, built a fire underneath, and the food would cook up nicely.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00044_zps068b8534.jpg

This door was built so cleverly that even a child can push the stone door open, but sadly the mechanism is broken now and cannot be repaired.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00040_zps2bc0df8d.jpg

We are shown where he dug the coral stone for his castle.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00042_zpsd12062ef.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00057_zpsd8271f54.jpg

These are signs of different planets.  I bet it's great sitting here and watching the stars in the sky at night!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00058_zpsafc7ca93.jpg

It's impressive indeed!  Very beautiful and we cannot imagine how a man was able to build the whole thing back in 1930s without any help from machine or men!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00054_zps5295578b.jpg

We went up the second floor of the the building. (How did he even build this?)

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00052_zps928b1d09.jpg

This is the bed he slept in.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00048_zpsda505d7a.jpg

Everything looked somewhat primitive.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/DSC00047_zps3048b42b.jpg

Quite an interesting tour indeed!

Today we are going out to visit some place.

Hmm, what does it say on the sign?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/DSC00080_zps30fb2323.jpg

Ah, it's the Thai Buddhist Temple in South Florida.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/DSC00083_zps076a7524.jpg

The building sure looks unusual.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/DSC00084_zps34ea8a35.jpg

The entrance to the temple looks very grand, and there are two golden lions guarding it.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/DSC00070_zpseb5b744f.jpg

The inside looks equally grand!  The Buddha statue was sculpted in Bangkok and is 23 feet high and weighs 5 tons.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/DSC00071_zps7077edec.jpg

Wow this gong must make very very loud noise!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/DSC00072_zps87c4329d.jpg

These chairs are for monks to sit in.

Fibicus the giraffe is leaving for Japan, and we decide to take him somewhere special for a farewell party. It's a restaurant named Giraffe!  At first he thought it serves giraffe meat but when he finds out they don't he feels very happy and honored!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121128_195130.jpg

We go to the counter to place our order.  This is a Brazilian burger and steak place.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121128_195722.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121128_195712.jpg

We are number 73.  We first get our drinks and the cheese bread, which are round little balls.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121128_195353.jpg

This is the quinoa salad.  It's delicious!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121128_200521.jpg

There is also steak.  Like many South American cuisines, the meat comes with black bean and rice.  There is the chimichurri sauce, made from parsley and garlic, for dipping the steak in.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2012/20121128_200631.jpg

We have a good dinner together.  It's sad saying goodbye, but we promise to stay in touch.

Can you believe it's new year already?

No, I am not kidding!  Turns out it's the lunar New Year, or more popularly known as Chinese New Year.

My host and her friends are throwing a new year party.  Yay!

First we find a plate of gold nuggets!  This is chocolate, similar to the chocolate coins, but made in the shape of what Chinese money used to look like!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00206_zps489be4fe.jpg

There are some Chinese BBQ roasted pork and duck.

And of course there will be fried rice!!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00208_zps90c02be2.jpg

These are actually not Chinese spring rolls, but a Filipino lumpia, brought by a Filipino guest.  There is beef inside.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00210_zpseca7663a.jpg

Another guest made dumplings.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00210_zpseca7663a.jpg

And someone bring along Korean kimchee (spicy pickled vegetables)!  Wow I am trying food from all over Asia.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00211_zps2adae24c.jpg

The kimchee is too spicy we need some drink.  I wonder if there is some Asian beer?  But we only see American beer, and some Red Strip from Jamaica, that is brought by a Jamaican Chinese guest.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00212_zpsedbd5618.jpg

For dessert we have the Chinese New Year pudding.  It's made with sugar and sweet rice flour.  Mmm we have such a feast!!!

Today the weather is very nice, and we go to the farmer's market.

Naturally, we shop for some fresh, local vegetables.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00222_zps406289fe.jpg

There are many varieties of tomatoes.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00219_zpsd3d509a4.jpg

Wow they have lobsters too!  Unlike Maine lobster, Florida lobster do not have the big pincher claws.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00215_zpsbdb82979.jpg

This stall makes conch fritters, and conch salad, a specialty of South Florida and the Caribbeans.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00218_zps2fd1ffe7.jpg

There are a lot of food.  This French (looking) guy is making crepe.  It looks delicious!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00252_zps9cf01919.jpg

We see this stall selling things with an ocean motif.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00242_zpsec8051a6.jpg

They have bags too with seahorses, shells and other decorations.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00253_zps95366e5d.jpg

We buy some local honey.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00251_zpse76436d1.jpg

Look they even have local rice grown in Florida!  Florida is actually the 7th largest rice-growing state in the U.S, but most of its production is used locally, as there is a heavy population of South American immigrants whose main starch is rice rather than potatoes.  It is used as a cover crop in sugarcane fields during the fallow period.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00250_zpsc5ff18a4.jpg

Here are some home-made cookies.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00245_zps18ed3e26.jpg

These are empanadas, stuffed pastries.  There are many varieties, filled with different types of meat, vegetables and cheeses.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00244_zps711fd20f.jpg

These hand made soaps look very pretty!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00241_zpsf532393b.jpg

Oh the popcorn smells so delicious!

There are flowers for sell.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00237_zpsca6aff65.jpg

These dwarf trees are called bonsai.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00234_zps456eb517.jpg

We can pick up some spices and herbs.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00233_zps47ad5b3c.jpg

Or some blend of tea.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00230_zps8fb9ad5c.jpg

We sample some of the home made dried fruits.  Yummy!!  The market is a lot of fun!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00282_zpsd29c6e2a.jpg

These are some pretty flowers!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00279_zpscba24624.jpg

The garden has been around for a while so the tropical foliage is very thick.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00278_zps1977849d.jpg

It feels like we are in a jungle!  I hope there's no tiger!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00272_zpsb9305e43.jpg

Look at this fruit!  I wonder what it is?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00267_zps23b5d612.jpg

We see some bamboo too.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00266_zpsaf84b01d.jpg

We come to a different part of the garden.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00261_zpseaceb4a4.jpg

Here people can enjoy a picnic and just sit and relax.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00262_zpsbbef0db6.jpg

We see a swam!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00260_zps10491283.jpg

The lotus flowers are very beautiful.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00257_zps45f0dc3e.jpg

Wow look at this banyan tree!  Banyan tree is special because when its air root touches ground, it will grow into another trunk, so all you see here is just one tree.  As a result, one tree can grow to cover a big area.  Covering 2/3 acre, this tree is among the largest of its kind!

This weekend we visit Tarpon Springs.  It is a small town on the west coast of Florida.  It used to be famous for its sponge production back from 1880s.  Back in 1950s the sponge industry made millions of dollars a year.  Nowadays, due to the high costs and water condition, very little sponge is produced and the place is mostly a tourist attraction.  However, the town continues to have the highest percentage of Greek American in the whole country, many descendants of the divers who immigrated during the sponge industry boom.

First on the agenda: visit a Greek restaurant to try some Greek food.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00402_zps07b3284c.jpg

We are ordering the gyros.  It is a sandwich, with some grilled lamb & beef wrapped in a pita bread, with some tomato, cucumber, onion and tzasiki sauce.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00397_zps446d9a4e.jpg

Look at all the pita bread!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00399_zps81a3c162.jpg

Can you see the roaster where the meat is grilled?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00403_zps3ec50233.jpg

Our gryos has arrived.  We also have a lamb souvlaki, similar to gryos but with lamb inside.  They are both very delicious.

Today we visit the Sponge Dock.

There is a statue memorizing all the sponge divers who had lost their lives when sponge harvesting.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00408_zps6e1a2081.jpg

This is an example of a sponge boat.  Maybe we should go and try harvest some sponge?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00411_zpsbad25dc4.jpg

Or maybe not.  I don't want to be shark dinner.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/a42fd0d2-3b99-4b40-8899-46d282aff0d2_zps11c2b3a7.jpg

It's safer to go to check out the shops.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00416_zps3defe32e.jpg

What do they have?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00417_zps0a16ff66.jpg

Lots of sponges!!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00419_zps18155f63.jpg

This one is called finger sponge.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00420_zpseaad84ea.jpg

This one is your plain old yellow sponge.  And the sign says it's harvested locally!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00421_zpsd4232a1e.jpg

And these are vase sponges!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00427_zps8412d766.jpg

These are called sea biscuits but I don't think they are very tasty.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00423_zps0a346609.jpg

And these are sand dollars.  You can find them on the beaches, though usually not as complete as this. They are the skeletons of sea urchins, although in folk legends, they were thought to be the coins lost by mermaids or people of the Atlantis.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00429_zps465dc2bc.jpg

Ah, I know these!  Star fishes!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00428_zps3f52ba37.jpg

Next we go to a Greek bakery.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00431_zps912c8d1f.jpg

There are many kind of sweet pastries, like bavlaka.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00436_zps6e521a33.jpg

Our host gets some of her favorite, diples.  It's a roll made from a thin sheet of fried dough and drizzled with honey.

Today we are going on a trip to Tampa, on the west coast of Florida.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00543_zps380ef6c5.jpg

Look there is a bridge coming up.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00550_zps8ff92555.jpg

This is the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.  The Travel Channel rated the Sunshine Skyway #3 in its special on the "Top 10 Bridges" in the World.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00552_zps9111b3f5.jpg

We come to visit the Cigar City Brewery.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00441_zps0573a460.jpg

The brewery was first built in Ybor City, which is a historic neighborhood in Tampa founded in the 1880s by cigar manufacturers.  Later it moved this current location, hence the saying on the sign.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00439_zps783e5af4.jpg

Here is the star of today!  The special brew, Hunahpu, which is available only on this day of the year, which we come here for.  Each person can buy only 3 bottles at $20 each.  The limited release bottle has received very high rating among drinkers and can fetch up to USD $200 on ebay.  People from all over the country come to line up from early in the morning to buy it.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00493_zps5b5dcab3.jpg

There are some food trucks here, because we all love some food to go with our beer!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00445_zps2cf8b602.jpg

This one called Oki Doki, sells Okinawan food.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00451_zps8beeea0b.jpg

We take a peek inside the truck.  They are very busy cooking!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00455_zpsa0aab7f4.jpg

Everybody seems to enjoy themselves, walking around with a beer in hand.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00486_zpsca9403b0.jpg

Some people bring their own chairs, coolers filled with beers, and food to just enjoy a nice day out here.  They chat, drink beer, and listen to the band playing.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00446_zps6d93d27b.jpg

There is a booth selling cigars made in Ybor City.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00459_zpsfae64504.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00462_zps597bb50c.jpg

Hmmm... I guess big cigars need a big lighter?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00463_zpsefccbffd.jpg

Let's check out the tasting room!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00466_zps5aff3efa.jpg

Look at all the beers on tap!! What a selection!  Most of them are local craft brews.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00479_zps5d90a69b.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00481_zps72c0ddc9.jpg

The brewery has won a lot of awards, which they proudly display.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00482_zps8a3026f4.jpg

Before we leave, we check out the shop so we can buy some souvenir.

Have you ever tried a Brazilian churrascaria? Today we are going to a Brazilian steakhouse.  At this one, instead of Rodizio style, which means the waiters bring the meat to you, it's self service.

Ah, I think we find the right place.  We can see the Brazilian flag on the sign.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00290.jpg

This is the name of the restaurant.  It means Rice and Beans, but our host assures us that we will get a lot more than that.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00292.jpg

Mmm it sounds good.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00306.jpg

Here is a poster reminding us that the 2014 World Cup will be in Brazil!  Hmmm needs to start planning my trip there!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00309.jpg

We sip some cold, refreshing cashew juice while reading the menu.  The juice is make from the cashew fruit, where the cashew nut is actually the seed of the fruit.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00293.jpg

At the buffet line you can see the salad and dessert.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00300.jpg

This is the grill where they have various cuts of meat: sirloin, chicken, pork loin, filet mignon, flank steak, sausages, and more.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00305.jpg

You let them know what meat you like and they cut it for you.  At fancier place you will have waiters come by to your table with the sword skewer of meat.

Today we go to visit a Free Little Library.  These are the books we are bringing.  We register them on BookCrossing first.  BookCrossing is like toyvoyagers, every book gets an ID number and it travels around the round.  By reading the book's journal you can find out where the book has gone and what its readers say about it.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00140.jpg

The Little Free Library is an organization that promotes setting up little "library" boxes in communities around the world, to encourage people to gather together, and to promote read.  People are welcome to visit the libraries to take and leave books.

We put our books into the library, and check to see if there is anything interesting.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00142.jpg

Hmmm, maybe we can just live here for a few days and enjoy some books?  It would be nice and cozy here.  Hey can you bring us some snack?

Today we go to visit a microbrewery.  It's called Due South.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00313.jpg

This little sign says: "Drink Like A Local" which we certainly would today!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00316.jpg

Here is a sign marking all the microbrewery nearby.  The Cigar City Brewery, which we visited a few weeks ago, is 219 miles away on the west coast.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00333.jpg

You can also get some souvenir t-shirts.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00327.jpg

Look at all the fermentation tanks!

We can see packs of ingredients lying around.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00339.jpg

These are the malt barley, a major ingredient in making beer.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00340.jpg

You can see the brew kettles on the left, where they add the barley.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00351.jpg

The grain after using in the beer will be given to nearby farmers.  I am sure that will feed some happy animals!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00363.jpg

We notice that all the tanks are named after Space Shuttles!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00364.jpg

These are some apple brandy barrels, used to brew some special edition beer.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00348.jpg

Now is time to enjoy some beer.  We go to the bar area.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00331.jpg

Hmm which one shall we order?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00347.jpg

We go to the lounge to enjoy our beer.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00325.jpg

There are lots of beer-related arts on the walk.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00321.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00317.jpg

Some are made with beer bottle caps.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00326.jpg

Yessir, we are doing our part: Support Florida breweries and drinking like a local!!

Today we go to see an outdoor screening of the movie The Life of Pi in Miami Beach.  In the winter time, when weather is not too hot, various places in South Florida will host free outdoors movie screenings.  People will bring their chairs, blankets, as well as picnic food, to enjoy a nice, inexpensive evening out.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00570.jpg

Lots of people are here already.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00572.jpg

We set up our chair and get our popcorns ready.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00571.jpg

Yay movie is starting!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00576.jpg

We enjoy the movie a lot.  It's about a boy who is lost on the sea and spends the time with a tiger on a small boat.  I am glad I am not on that boat!

If you think we've been drinking a lot lately, well, today for a change, we are going to eat a lot!!  We are going to this event called Taste of Pinecrest.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00623.jpg

Mmmm these cupcakes and lollipops look GOOD!!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00616.jpg

This stall sells different types of french fries, wrapped in newspaper-looking grease paper.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00613.jpg

Machu Picchu is the "Lost City of the Incas".  So this must be a Peruvian restaurant!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00610.jpg

It's a rather hot day and great for some snow cone.  Which flavor would you like?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00609.jpg

This is a big plate of pulled pork.  It's pork barbecue where the pork, after slow cooking, is tender enough to be pulled into shreds.  It is then mixed with barbecue sauce.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00605.jpg

Hamburger, anyone?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00600.jpg

You can also get some delicious and healthy smoothie.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00601.jpg

There is a band playing music.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00606.jpg

There is also a line of food trucks, for even more options.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00596.jpg

It's not easy at all deciding what to try!!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00599.jpg

When you eat so much your clothes feel tight, you can do some shopping here as well!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00595.jpg

There are also some games for children.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00593.jpg

I sure hope they haven't eaten too much food... I know I can't be swinging around and bouncing up and down with all the food in my stomach!!

Today we go to see something very American!!

No, I don't mean the Hard Rock cafe or casino, though that's very American... (BTW this casino is located in Hollywood, Florida. So I did go to a casino, and I did go to Hollywood but it's in Florida)

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00680.jpg

Let's follow the sign...  to the American Indian pow wow!!  The Seminole tribe owns the casino, that's why there is an Indian village and have pow wow here.  It may sound weird, but because it has been determined that the Native Americans are here before the white American government, they do not have to abide by many laws of the U.S. govt and do not pay tax.  As a result, many tribes open casinos because it's such a profitable business for them...

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00686.jpg

There is no big prairie here, the dancing are done inside a stadium.  We see them all dressed up ready to dance.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00704.jpg

First they say a prayer and then introduces the little Miss and Mister Seminole.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00729.jpg

Next all the dancers come out in a parade.  It's leaded by the warriors.  Following behind are the little Miss and Mister Seminole.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00707.jpg

Look at the beautiful outfit!!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00715.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00740.jpg

The face paint makes them look very fierce!!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00716.jpg

The ladies look very graceful in their buckskin dresses.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00776.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00774.jpg

Do you see how the little toddler is dressed up like his father?

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00755.jpg

The drummers sit in a circle.  I can't imagine how they can sit down in their outfit!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00768.jpg

They have competition where different dancers were performed.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00771.jpg

This is the Southern tradition.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00792.jpg

This one is called Grass Dancing.  The head dress makes us think of moth antennae.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00798.jpg

There are many stalls at the pow wow.

Look at all the moccasins!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00687.jpg

These jewelries are very beautiful.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00691.jpg

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00784.jpg

There are some paintings.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00815.jpg

The traditional Seminole clothings are very colorful.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00786.jpg

These pendants are made with tiny beads.

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00785.jpg

Mickey Mouse moccasins!

http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u314/azuki726/toy%20voyagers/2013/DSC00783.jpg

There are also books and CDs.
