We went to Melchsee-Frutt today. Melchsee-Frutt is a mountain resort village in Switzerland. The village is located near the lake Melchsee, in the municipality of Kerns, canton Obwalden. It has an elevation of 1920 meters. The main attractions of this resort are skiing, snowboarding, hiking, biking and rock climbing. It can be reached by use of a gondola lift.

We celebrated Cow's descent from Alpine today! I really enjoyed watching the beautiful cows.

The cows' descent from Alpine pastures gives rise to an impressive popular celebration. Having spent approximately four months on Alpine pastures, the beautifully adorned herds with their bells ringing rhythmically, together with the Alpine herdsmen in their traditional costumes, move back down to the valley. This popular celebration honors an ancient custom and keeps the tradition alive.

Hi Dawoni,
I arrived safely in Pretoria, South Africa today. I had a safe journey, but it was really nice to get put of the stuffy envelope! I was warmly welcomed by my host family. Lilla, one of my host family TV's helped me out of the envelope.

Goeie dag Dawoni! (Good day Dawoni!)

Katara is teaching me some Afrikaans  ;) She says that it is similar to Flemmish. Katara's mother brought her a young coconut that she bought at the shop. It is the first time that they see one - they have only seen and eaten mature coconuts.

First we made a little hole at the top of the coconut and we drank out the coconut milk with a straw. The milk was almost a clear colour and it had it a roasted/nutty flavour. The coconut had lots of milk!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/Heidi/FE143504-85CA-4B26-A0E2-B3F59F3F20C7-21460-000019B5CAFD869D.jpg

Next we tried to break open the coconut - this was very hard to do as the coconut shell was very hard to break. The coconut inside was soft and jelly-like. We scooped it out with a spoon and ate it.  :D

Hi Dawoni,

You'll never guess where I was today! I was in Cape Town! Katara's husband had to attend two business meetings in Cape Town for the day, so he took me with! There wasn't much time for sight-seeing but we did manage to get a few photos.

We had lunch at The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront You can read more about the Waterfront if you click on the link.

First we assembled the tree

Pretoria is known as "The Jacaranda City" because of the many Jacaranda trees that grow there. There is a story amongs students that if a Jacaranda blossom falls on your head then you will do well in the examinations ;). Another story is that if you haven't started studying for your exams by the time the Jacaranda trees start blooming, then it is too late...

Hi Dawoni,

Today Katara and her husband tried Geocaching for the first time!

"GEOCACHING is a free real-world outdoor treasure hunt. Players try to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using a smartphone or GPS and can then share their experiences online"

It was a lot of fun! We set out to find 3 Geocaches and we found them all  :cyclops:

This is where the first 'treasure' was hidden. It took us a while to find because we didn't realise that the pole could open  ;) But then I figured it out!  :cyclops:

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/Heidi/863F6BEE-2FFC-4A00-91D5-70D8D8B09AB2-1354-0000017B6E5EA9A1.jpg

We did some 'treasure swapping' and rescued Oswald the turtle from that dark place!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/Heidi/92DA653B-B6F8-41E4-905D-7503DC6D2610-1354-0000017B57E944F1.jpg

Then we moved on to the next location - this one was cleverly hidden in a old telephone pole - we almost didn't find it...

We went to a restaurant for lunch! The food was very nice  ;) Upon our arrival all of the guests received a little appetizer - It was a layer of cherry jelly, with some appletizer and a grape in a shot glass. It tasted good!

Katara and her husband went to Brown's Cabin and Cottages for a mid-week break. We stayed in the cottage and it was very pretty!

Oswaldt came with to keep me company. He asked me how it was to be a ToyVoyager. He said that he was a bit afraid of becoming one himself. He says he thinks he'll like to stay in South Africa.

Today we decided to go up the Aerial Cableway Hartbeespoort

We took some photos along the way. We crossed the dam wall and drove through a short tunnel.

We stopped to greet a horse - he was quite friendly!  :D

Today we went to the Centurion Mall - it is an open-air mall. We went early in the morning to avoid the rush! We had some last minute Xmas shopping to do!

Hi Dawoni,

Today Katara taught me how to make Baked Macaroni and Cheese!

First we got all the ingredients. We needed some cooked macaroni, some cheese, smoked ham, milk, eggs, a little Tabasco, salt and pepper.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/Heidi/7FFEE15C-88F6-44C2-87F6-7DD6D3DB29E9-1032-0000017E18BB7FD8.jpg

We layered the macaroni, cheese and smoked ham in oven-proof dishes

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/Heidi/BF8DE6A5-BCFE-4965-80D8-8889B83F8912-1032-0000017E20F282DD.jpg

Then we poured over a mixture of milk and eggs with a touch of Tabasco (for some extra flavour)  ;) and put it in the oven to bake.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/Heidi/9ADF8C7F-6CB7-410E-833A-5F3E083FC616-1032-0000017E2A21BDCC.jpg

After about 30 minutes it was ready. We took it out of the oven and left it a while to set. It tasted delicious! We ate it with a touch of tomato sauce  :cyclops:

Goeie dag Dawoni!

Today we made a "braai" (barbeque) for lunch. Katara made us some "krummelpap."

Pap – a porridge made from maize (corn) meal – is the staple food of southern Africa.
Putu pap is also known as krummelpap, which means "crumbly porridge". It is made with very little water, giving it a dry and crumbly texture.
It is usually combined with a tomato-and-onion sauce, such as sheba sauce or chakalaka sauce, and served as a side dish together with barbecued meat or boerewors (braaivleis).
People in the Western Cape tend to eat krummelpap with milk and sugar for breakfast.

We also made a carrot salad. We were supposed to add some raisins but unfortunately Katara didn't have any. we used grated carrot, some crushed pineapple, and a little bit of juice to make the salad.

Hi Dawoni!

Today we visited the Irene Village Mall

This sculpture is named The Udder Side. The Udder Side, which artist Angus Taylor conceptualised and produced in collaboration with fellow artists Francois Visser and Steven Delport, is an affectionate send-up of the dairy cow. It is a hugely oversized cow statue – with only it’s four legs and udder visible, it is a magnet for children. From:http://www.irenevillagemall.co.za/press_article.htm?contentID=13

HAPPY NEW YEAR DAWONI!!
Katara

Hi Dawoni,

Today I visited the Nan Hua Temple to celebrate the Chinese New Year! They had a cultural festival and we had a great day!

Nan Hua Temple (南華寺, Nanhua Si) is the largest Buddhist temple and seminary in Africa, and is situated in the Cultura Park suburb of Bronkhorstspruit, South Africa. It is the African headquarters of the Fo Guang Shan (Buddha's Light Mountain) Order, covering over 600 acres (2.4 km2). Fo Guang Shan was established in 1967 by Venerable Master Hsing Yun, and is a Mahayana Chinese Buddhism monastic order. The Temple, like its mother order in Taiwan, follows the Linji Chan school of Buddhism as well as the Pure Land School. From:Wikipedia

Here we are at the entrance of the Cultural Park:

The Werdhi Budaya Art Centre is one of the largest and most complete in series of cultural centres built throughout the archipelago by the Indonesian Government over the last decade.

Hello

iam with Balinese offerings

Offerings are called banten in Balinese. It is possible that the word comes from the Sanskrit word bali, which means tribute, obligation or gift. Or it may be derived from the word enten, which means to wake up or be conscious. It is a consciousness of the Gods.

Dear Mom

We spending a lot of time in Grandpaw n Grandmaw home in East Java after the hostmom exam completed.
We play in the rice field behind Grandpaw home.  In Indonesia , rice is major source of food for the majority of the population. It is a plant that requires plenty of water and heat. In Java, Bali, and other islands in Indonesia the rains are so plentiful that it is possible to grow three or four rice crops a year. Rice fields are surrounded by low walls to maintain the water at a time when fields are flooded. In mountain areas, the paddy fields form terraces where water flowing from the top successively fills each of them. Planting, harvesting and threshing rice is a slow process done by hand.

Dear Mom

Host mom, took us to her campus,  which is located in Jimbaran hill. There are several statues of Gods Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati, as a symbol of education/knowledge .
Coming home from college, we stopped at the nearest beach, the Jimbaran beach, to enjoy the beautiful sunset.

Today we made Linda's favorite food, Rujak Manis (Javanese-style fruit salad, with spicy sugar sauce). Its made from  Bengkoang (Pachyrhizus erosus ), young Mango, Salak ((Salacca zalacca ), fried tofu and crackers. For the sauce, the main ingredient is Javanese sugar, sea salt and chilies. Yummy ^^  ]
