Yesterday I was at Stephens Cathedral. Inside we couldn`t make photos.
And outside we found a little Stephens Cathedral - it was so nice. I also was at the roof! Great - a little girl on the roof of Stephens Cathedral! And Sue and Melek were with me! I also wanted to know more about Stephansdom = St. Stephan's cathedral - so I was told: It took over 100 years to build it. Stephens Cathedral has the South Tower and the North Tower which has never been finished. I wanted to know why and was told the Sage of Hans Puchsbaum. (I then wanted to know what a Sage is. They explained that it was similar to a tell tale. It is typical for Vienna, or even for Austria as a whole.) Well, here is the tell tale of Hans Puchsbaum: He was a young man, who worked as an architect for St. Stephan's cathedral. He was very talented, and his boss was impressed by his work. Then he fell in love with the daughter of his boss. His boss was only willing to allow their relationship, if Hans proved himself to be the best architect of the city by finishing the North Tower of the Cathedral. Hans was devastated - this was an impossible task. He didn't know what to do - and that was when he met the Devil and made a deal with him. He was promised to be able to finish the North Tower in no time, but wasn't allowed to speak the names of the holy family for one year. The North Tower was nearly finished, when one day Hans saw his beloved standing in front of the Cathedral. He called her name"Maria", so that she would see him. That was when he fell. All the work on the North Tower was immediatly abandoned, and hasn't been continued until today. |

Today I visit with my mum Grinsekatze and many friends:Carolin +Daisy Orange + Kara + Melek + Pingi +Taja the world oldes Zoo in Schönbrunn.
Here you can read about it: The World´s Oldest Zoo Part of the imperial summer residence of Schönbrunn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the world's oldest zoo is indeed an unforgettable experience, and one that no visitor to Vienna should miss. Along with the historic complexes of the former "menagerie" of Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine, visitors discover what is perhaps the world's most beautiful zoo in a unique setting where culture and nature blend. More than 500 animal species, some of them threatened, have found a home here and a chance for survival as a species. From A as in anteater to Z as in zebra: A visit to the Schönbrunn Zoo is a tour through every continent in the fascinating world of animals. See giant pandas, Siberian tigers, orangutans, and elephants, or immerse yourself in the Amazon and experience the tropical rain forest. A visit to the zoo offers young and old alike an enjoyable vacation in an incomparable setting and interesting insights into our nature and species conservation work. Modern zoos such as the Schönbrunn Zoo have become educational centers; they are showcases for teaching and research, and valuable partners for many nature and species conservation projects. Not only are the knowledge and experience of zoologists, veterinarians, and keepers available for such projects, but so are the threatened animal species that have been carefully bred in the scope of the international zoo network. With your admission fee, and more especially through your interest in the animals and the work of the zoo, you are supporting our efforts in nature and species conservation! http://www.zoovienna.at/en/zoo-and-visitors/welcome-worlds-oldest-zoo/ And here the photos: We were at the Giant Pandas but they had played hide and seek and so we couldn`t see them. But we were lucky. The artist Gottfried Kumpf has made a Giant Panda and so we could climb on it. Have a look! |

Today I visit with my mum Grinsekatze and Melek + Pingi +Little Dragon the Zentralfriedhof
The Zentralfriedhof (German for "Central Cemetery") is one of the largest cemeteries in the world, largest by number of interred in Europe and most famous cemetery among Vienna's nearly 50 cemeteries. The cemetery's name is descriptive of its significance as Vienna's biggest cemetery, not of its geographic location, as it is not situated in the city center of the Austrian capital, but on the very outskirts, in the outer city district of Simmering, and its address is Simmeringer Hauptstraße 230–244, Vienna 1110, Austria. The musician Wolfgang Ambros honoured the Zentralfriedhof in his 1975 song "Es lebe der Zentralfriedhof" ("Long live the Zentralfriedhof"), marking with it the 100th anniversary of the cemetery's opening. We have seen the grave of Falco the great musican (his real name was Hans Hölzl) Johann (Hans) Hölzel (19 February 1957 – 6 February 1998), better known by his stage name Falco , was an Austrian pop and rock musician and rapper. He had several international hits: "Der Kommissar", "Rock Me Amadeus", "Vienna Calling", "Jeanny", "The Sound of Musik", "Coming Home (Jeanny Part 2)" and posthumously, "Out of the Dark". "Rock Me Amadeus" reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts, making him the only artist whose principal language was German to score a number-one hit in the United States. His estate claims he has sold 20 million albums and 15 million singles, which makes him the best selling Austrian singer of all time. We have lighted a candle for him. |

Thomisa Posted Sep 19, 2012, 10:54 am |
Hi Mum!
Well, here I am in the UK I had a good journey (thanks for packing some sweets!) but I'm glad to be out now. My host family is lovely. And I'm very happy that there are some other ToyVoyagers here too: This is me with Krumelknirps and Mishuta. I'm going to do some exploring tomorrow... I'm pretty tired now after all that travelling, so bye for now. Love Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Sep 19, 2012, 11:21 am |
Hi Mum,
Well, I had a good rest and was ready to explore my host's home. Here I am looking in the kitchen cupboard: I was looking for some sweets, but didn't find any today. My host brother and sister said they'll help me find some This is me looking out into the garden: Look at that climbing frame! It looks like lots of fun! And this is me going upstairs: I can't wait to see more of the UK! Lots of love, Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Sep 26, 2012, 10:51 am |
Hi Mum,
Well, I've been having lots of fun here in the UK I thought I'd show you how I spent my Saturday. Host mum did some tutoring in the morning, so we sat and watched and learnt lots of interesting things! Then we had some lunch: I really think you should make these Mum! They were soooo delicious! You need to put a slice of ham in a wrap, add some grated cheese, some roasted peppers from a jar and then roll them up in silverfoil. Put them in the oven for 10 - 15 minutes on 180 degrees C. Yum! In the afternoon Hostdad collected a VW campervan. We haven't had a chance to explore it yet but I will show you some photos when we do. Tomorrow we're going to a craft fair. I'm very excited! Bye for now, Lots of love, Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Sep 27, 2012, 10:55 am |
Hi Mum,
Well, today we went to a Christmas craft fair at Alexandra Palace. This is a very impressive building, built in 1873. It's the place where the first television service was broadcast by the BBC: I had an amazing view across London! In the background you can see St. Paul's Cathedral, the Shard and the Gherkin: This is all of us in the car driving up to the Palace. We were going to get the train but it wasn't working. You can see the mast: And here I am inside: There were lots of stalls. Host mum and host nan bought some things to help them make Christmas cards and other crafty items: You can also see the famous organ in the background. It's called the Willis Organ and has been there since 1875! We had a great day, but I was exhausted by the end. Bye for now, Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Oct 3, 2012, 10:49 am |
Hi Mom,
I explored the campervan today! It was lots of fun Here we all are on the back seat: And this is us all up the front: I decided to help hostdad fix the front seats so he asked me to find him a spanner... While I was in the front garden, I decided to relax amongst the plants: I hope I find some sweets soon... Lots of love, Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Oct 10, 2012, 10:37 am |
Hi Mum,
We said a fond farewell to Krumelknirps the other day. Here he is getting into the envelope: I hope he has a safe journey all the way to Miami! We were very sad to see him go, but hopefully we'll meet again one day. Kathy xx |
Thomisa Posted Oct 10, 2012, 10:40 am |
Hi Mum,
Today I helped hostmum with some artwork. She bought a thing called a brayer and I had lots of fun getting covered in ink! Kathy xx |
Thomisa Posted Oct 10, 2012, 10:46 am |
Hi Mom,
I just realised I put the wrong date in my campervan update! I explored the campervan on September 29th not October! How silly of me Anyway, today I was looking for some sweets and found some in the fridge... Only problem is, I got stuck inside! I was so cold, when hostmom found me she wrapped me up in a nice warm towel: I'm OK now The sweets are for my hostbrother's 5th birthday next week... I can't wait for the party! Love Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Oct 22, 2012, 11:54 am |
Hi Mom,
Look! We had to go to the shop to buy more sweets for my hostbrother's party... I was so happy to find all these sweets! Then we went home and Mishuta and I helped to put up a birthday banner: It was pretty high up there Then I really wanted to find some sweets, so Mishuta helped me to look in the boys' party bags: And then the girls' party bags: Found some Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Oct 22, 2012, 11:59 am |
Hi Mom,
Well today we had an exciting day as we went to the circus! This is it here: This is me inside waiting for the show: And eating some popcorn, which was really yummy! Here I am watching the show: We saw clowns and acrobats and girls with lots of hula hoops! And men juggling and riding a unicycle. Hostmom said that when she was little there were animals at the circus, but they don't have them anymore as it's cruel to keep them in tiny cages. I had so much fun today |
Thomisa Posted Oct 31, 2012, 4:33 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today we celebrated Halloween. I went on a bus to the town: When we got off the bus we walked to the church where the museum is. This is a mosaic in the courtyard: We had a look around the museum for a bit. It's all about local history and the building of the new town. I loved the 1950s kitchen: My hostnan said she remembers the same cupboard from when she was little! I also thought this was a really good idea - it's like a shopping list. You just flip the little arrows over to point to what you need to buy: Then it was time to do some Halloween crafts Here I am helping to make a window pumpkin: Afterwards we went to do a treasure hunt in the park, but they had run out of treasure! We still got a prize though... a plastic pumpkin full of sweets! So then we went on the swings for a bit: And looked at the river: Then we had some lunch. I had a cheese and onion toastie and I tried a bit of ham and cheese. Hmm and the tuna melt too... When we got home, I had a look in the pumpkin for some sweets. It was full! I'm very happy This is me sticking the pumpkins on the window: And here I am with the bats we made and the ghosts: Phew! I'm exhausted We have to get ready for the trick or treaters now... Kathy xx |

Hi Mum,
Just a quick photo so you can see what I did last night! It was Bonfire Night and we had some sparklers in the garden. It was quite cold. Do you like my hat? It's one of my hostsister's doll's hats which she said I could borrow. It kept my head nice and warm! That's all for now. Love Kathy xx |
Thomisa Posted Nov 14, 2012, 11:12 am |
Hi Mum,
Just another quick photo to show you where I visited on Saturday: My hostbrother had a birthday party painting ceramics so hostmum, hostdad, hostsister and I went for a walk around the town. We came across this lovely old-style sweet shop. It smelt delicious! Bye for now, Kathy xx |
Thomisa Posted Nov 25, 2012, 12:34 pm |
Hi Mum,
Just a few photos from my last trip in Hertfordshire. We took the campervan out for its first proper drive! First of all, we went to the rubbish dump and recycling centre. Not very exciting, but it was interesting to watch all the different things being put into different containers. Then we went for a drive around Watton. It's a nice country place... I feel sad to be leaving, but very excited about meeting my next family. I think I'm going really soon. Kathy xxx |
Thomisa Posted Nov 25, 2012, 3:54 pm |
Hey Mum,
Just showing you my last few photos of my stay in Hertfordshire. This is me saying goodbye to some toys I made friends with. Here we are having tea at their house: And this is me doing a puzzle. This is the main street. All looks OK but... This time last week, it was flooded. A very rare event for this village. Carpets are ruined... |

We went to a boardgame club.
This game is called Discworld Ankh Morpork. Discworld is a fantasy world created by Terry Pratchett. My host played the role of Lord Vetinari (the patrician) but other players did not know it. My host won! Another game was played by other players - 1812 - The Invasion of Canada But these games were not played that night. My host has played Suburbia before and has enjoyed it. |

Today, we went to a boardgame club. The game we played was Descent: Journeys in the Dark (second edition)
My host's character was Leoric Of The Book.. She died, but one of the other players revived her. And it was her character who killed the baddie and won the game Next, we played The Resistance, a game where you are either a resistance member or a spy. My host was a spy in all the games of this we played (at least half a dozen)! |

Today, we've come to Porthmadog to go on the Ffestiniog Railway.
Looking out at the sea. A pretty garden at one of the stations There's the engine. Trawsfynydd's old power station. On part of a loop Tanygrisiau reservoir. A waterfall. The train was slowing into a station... So we were able to get more photos of it. At Blaenau Ffestiniog. The engine needs to take on water. Passing another train at a station. The tickets. |
miapearl Posted Jun 2, 2013, 8:47 pm |
Today, we've come to Llandudno for the Victorian Extravaganza.
There were many old engines. We listened to some music. There's a little railway with little engines. He's filling up the engine with some tiny pieces of coal. And the engine also needs water to be turned into steam. My host didn't go on the chair-o-plane. An engine. Some engines dwarf this old car. |
miapearl Posted Jun 2, 2013, 9:36 pm |
Today, we went to the Centre For Alternative Technology in mid-Wales
We travel up to the centre via a little cliff railway. The centre is in an old quarry high up in the hills. Some herbs. Inside the polytunnel, a grape vine. That is an education centre. Details of electricity generators. Closer view. Small life. Starting to look lush. |
