Hello! This is my first travelog! My name is Digory, and I'm a small hedgehog. I was named for a character in the Narnia books, and so I hope one day to read them with someone. My mentor is sending me off to travel the world. She says I'll start by visiting some friends of hers on an email group and that they're very sweet. I hope so! I hope to have some adventures to write about soon!

I spent some time resting from my long trip from Massachusetts. I've been hanging out with my host family. In the pictures...1) Taking a nap with my new cuddle friend, Frida, 2) Cubs win!, 3) Play time!, 4) Looking through Amatullah's postcards from over 200 countries, 5) Didn't find any magic gateways in this wardrobe, 6) More play time!, 7) Amatullah's prized cherry tree, 8) Where I slept!

Digory has been busy! In the pictures: 1) Safety first before we leave! 2) Iowa's First State Capitol, can you see me? (I'm a white dot near the bottom), 3) Cool Museum! 4) Cool tree! Can you see me climbing on the big limb? 5) Iowa's City's Ped Mall, a great place to shop! 6) The flood waters last month came up to this line at this Hardee's in Coralville, 7) I found lots of mail here!

Digory has been working on his goals. He explored the wardrobe here, but, alas, no magic gateways! He picked a crab apple not realizing it tastes much different from a regular apple! He has talked to the tv here. I don't have postcards from every country in the world but he looked at the ones I have from over 200 different countries!

Then i met a turtle and went for a ride. That's it for now. Iowa's great!  :p

I've arrived!!  :D Today is going to be a relaxing day. She thought I might be tired after the long journey so we are staying home. (She is also sleepy; I think she was too excited to see me)! Cloudy outside so not great picture taking weather. My adventures start tomorrow!

We went out early this morning after the sun came up. It was a chilly 45 degrees F and a little breezy. We drove up to see Grandad's Bluff ... what you see is river fog. (Mississippi River) She said she'd drive me up there again when there is no fog so we can see more. The bluff overlooks the city of La Crosse (most of it).

We had to look at signs and follow rules. Old Glory can be seen from many points in La Crosse. The only time it's not flying is during Christmas holiday when they do a light formation of a tree.

We found an historical landmark, so we stopped and read it.

Oh, and a nice picture of me in the morning sunlight!

More pictures later!!

We got a special treat. She was just going to show me a local paddle wheeler boat but we saw one that came all the way from Louisiana! The Julia Belle Swain. I got to see where the Captain steers the boat and how big it is! The last picture is of the La Crosse Queen, the local paddle wheel boat. It was close to sunset so hard to see.

Lots of pictures of me in the Chinese/Friendship Garden!

Posted Sep 19, 2008, 4:51 pm
We went to a local park where I got to see an American Eagle statue, the fountain that represents all the rivers flowing into the Mississippi River in Wisconsin, see a good portion of what the Mississippi looks like, the two bridges that connect Minnesota to Wisconsin, saw Tecumseh (she said this was native American land), found a book that also travels, designer bird that has a flock all over La Crosse (each one is unique), and a funny shot of me chillin in a Pepsi machine!  :stare:

Correction: My host found out that she was wrong. The Julia Belle Swain is native to this area.
OOps...  :o

Oh Boy! Did we have a blast today. She took me to an apple orchard/farm! I got to pick an apple (it's almost big as me!)  :D ... then I posed for a couple silly pictures ... Look Mom! I'm a cow!.  :) We started a corn maze but then heard the last call for a hay ride, technically no hay, but still a fun ride and it shows a lot of apple trees! Then I found me a nice sized pumpkin! On the way out we saw some billy goats... they were being silly by going up so high!

Posted Sep 22, 2008, 2:46 pm
On the way back from the orchard, I got to see the sign for the entrance to the city! She tells me the statue is of them playing the sport la crosse ...

more pictures later, she's taking me out again today! :D

My host's mom woke her up this morning and let her know that one of the river boats from Louisiana was here! (only from 8am - 1pm) So of course she had to take me down to see it! WOW. :o A little animal like me could get lost in there! It's a floating hotel!

Right behind the American Queen is the Julia Belle Swain. Can you see how big of the difference is??

:o

Before leaving the park, got to see how busy the river was ... a barge passed by. Got to see more ducks and a better view of the La Crosse Queen.

We stopped on the way home and did a candid shot of a local watering hole ... she likes the slogan!

Also a pose of me in front of a world landmark.

B) Parade Pictures: Kazoo Band, Ho-Chunk Tribe (she says there is a big casino in the middle of the state for them),  the only thing that we saw that was Marines in nature (I know 'daddy' will like it!)  :D, parade loot!  B)

We were so tired from today that we slept when we got home!

Parade Pics:
Saw a cow in parade (well, I am in the dairy state),  and a chicken!,  and me and the American flag in support of our troops, and all of the birds lined up! (remember me posing by 2 of them?)  :D A local radio station helping to promote breast cancer awareness (October) ... she said this is a fun promotion to watch. The only time you get to see lingerie on display for a good cause!

Parade Pics:
Harley Davidson motorcycles ... created in WI.
Me with Mardi Gras beads. I was just cute enough that I got them!
Wow! I got to see Ronald McDonald!!
Lots of countries are represented here... She said the University here has flags flying over all the campus from other countries.
I wonder if hedgehogs could help out on this one? Oh wait, I'm stuffed!  :stare:

Wow, busy day. We went to a long parade (10am - 1:30pm)! She took lots of pictures of me so I would remember what I saw.
They started out the parade with all the local men/women who protect us (even hedgehogs!).  She was impressed with this vehicle, so was I.  This puffy tall guy is a fireman.
This guy just had a funky hairdo.
The University of La Crosse (UW-L; Screaming Eagles) band is a fun one... she got serenaded by one of the band members (as part of the act that they do). The mascot was cool, he posed but not in time for me to get in frame!  :p
One of the many vehicles that are patriotic...

Well, she promised to take me up to Granddad's Bluff again so I could see more since the last time it was foggy. Today it was cloudy but some sun was shining!  B)

This is me looking towards Iowa! It's just bluffs but it's still part of Iowa.  :stare:

This is more of the downtown area of La Crosse... the two blue bridges show the way over to Minnesota.

This shows the north side of La Crosse... the green stuff is the marsh area / wildlife habitat.

The trail that is now shut down, she thinks it is due to erosion from the many rains they had that destroyed the main road up the bluff.  It had a good vantage point to see the whole city!

The leaves are changing color!  :)

My paws set in the state of Minnesota (she went to her parents place) in to La Crescent.

My host thought that I should get out and see the wonderful colors that the leaves are changing into ... so we got to see them from the Bluff!
She also got pictures of us going down the bluff (in the car). It's very tricky roads so we went slow! It's also beautiful driving!

I couldn't go in but she took me out to show me where she voted today (she did the absentee vote to avoid the lines on Tuesday). We went to her friend's place so I could do a pose in front of a political sign.

A quick lunch ... the robot cat she found on a table. We all agreed that it could join us.

Hey Mom!

Today we had a very different day. we went with karla to a small wedding lunch reception held by her work friend fernanda. the main dish was feijoada, a typical brazilian food made with black beans and the less noble pork parts, such as ears, tail and nose. it was created by the slaves who ate the rests of the foods.
