Hi Mummy,
I arrived in Remscheid today. I was welcomed by a whole bunch of ToyVoyagers: My new friens are Honesty, Klaus, Vakinas, Twix and iluaP ruhtrA, and of course my first host Katja. She told me that a little turtle, Squirt, also was a ToyVoyager hosted by her. Squirt is on a holiday trip with her parents at the moment. I brought some presents for my host, she really loves the biro and the sticker. She also loves my diary. Katja promised me that we would take a walk later in the afternoon. Love Owen |

Hi Mummy,
as the weather was fantastic (after weeks with lots of rain, like Katja told me) we outside to take a walk. The first photo was taken close to my current home, an area in the city with a lot of nice old houses. Remscheid is an old industrial town. Tools are produced here since middle ages. You can find a lot of old industrial sites among older dwellings. The city centre is situated on top of a hill, which is surrounded by valleys with many forests, rivers and creeks and also rural landscape and farm land. We reached one of the oldest districts in the municipal area than. It is called Hasten. You can find many of those houses here, which are typical for this region, half-timbered houses and houses which are covered with slate, both with usually green shutters and doors. Those houses were usually built from late 1700s years until early 1900s years. In this district you can also find a lot of industrial sites among dwellings. They have a little quarter center here with shops, restaurants, banks and so on. Those houses on the left side of the next photo are some of the oldest here in this district. They were built extremely close together. This Patrician Villa was built in 1778/1779 and is one of Remscheid's landmarks. It was built by two brothers, rich merchants. Later the city's mayor was living in this house. Nowadays a museum is situated here. Next we walked through a housing area, mostly you can find one-family houses here. We came back to the centre of Hasten, here you have many companies and crafts enterprises. When we already were tired from walking so long Katja told us that we would have to walk uphill now, we took a path in the municipal park, which is really large, extending along this hill with the city centre on top. That was a very interesting first day in Germany, but now I'm tired. I need a banana and than I will probably fall asleep immediately. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
Katja took me and the little raccoon to her work place. In our lunch break we took a walk in the city centre. Because Katja is working close to the city hall this was our first stop. The city hall was originally built in 1906, but was nearly destroyed in World War II and than rebuilt in a more modern style. Its tower is 48 m high. The large open space in front of the city hall is the market place. A farmers market is held here twice a week. There is a pillar with a lion statue on this place. The lion is the heraldic animal of Remscheid. In the background you can see the shopping mall. This is the water tower, close to the city hall. As Remscheid was built on top of a hill, you can see those two towers (water tower and city hall) from far away. Those tenaments were painted recently. We found this shady playground... ... and lovely traditional houses. Back in the city centre Katja showed us the central bus station. Here you can see the company building of the local newspaper "Remscheider General-Anzeiger". And this is the public library. We reached the rear side of the shopping mall than. You can also see the city hall tower and the theatre on the left side. Katja decided to get something for lunch - we were almost starving. We went to the shopping mall and bought french fries with onions. Later I was invited by Katja's colleage to go on a short holiday trip with her to Palatinate Forest. Forest sounds great I'm really curious - this forest is a designated nature park and the largest forest area within Germany. Love Owen |

I'm ready to go with Elke Love Owen |

Hi Mummy,
Elke's home is decorated autumnally. Let's see how high I can fly with this kite. This guy is looking sort of grumpily, but he seemed to be friendly although. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
we made a short stop in Cologne. Close to the central station you can find Cologne Cathedral. Its spires are almost hidden in the fog. Bye Owen |

today our trip to Palatinate Forest started. I took care that Elke packed everything into the suitcases. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
today we visited the "Biosphärenreservat Pfälzerwald-Vosges du Nord", one of 15 biosphere reserves in Germany. I wasn't sure if I liked this kind of artwork. Thankfully this creature was not a real one. Bye Owen |
olgamaus Posted Oct 11, 2010, 3:53 pm |
Hi Mummy,
we visited a small town, Bad Bergzabern. Here you can see part of the old city wall, it is called "Stork Tower". This is the "Deutsche Weintor" (German Wine Gate), which is marking the Southern beginning of the German Wine Route. This route was established in 1935 to connect all vintners villages to boost the wine sales. Those chestnuts must be delicious - they are made of chocolate. Those mushrooms are only decoration items. I want to visit a real mushroom forest! I know this one exactly: It is a highly poisonous fly agaric. (Although there are no flies in sight and this mushroom cannot fly itself). But I know why it is called fly agaric. In the past people cut this mushroom into pieces and put it into sweetened milk. Flies tasted this mixture and died shortly after this. We reached the parking lot of a historic castle. From there I had a great overview later. We enjoyed a local delicacy: Tarte Flambée and Federweisser, the product of fermented freshly pressed grape juice, known as must. The term in principle includes all stages of fermentation from must to finished wine. I don't know the name of this mushroom, but the whole forest smells like mushrooms. What is this? A troll aking a bath! Our trip through the forest came to an end than. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
today we visited the "Technik-Museum" (Technical Museum) in Speyer. I've seen fascinating things there. This are not toy cars - they are all on a scale of 1:1. Four days passed too fast, we were on our way back home than. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
because of the fantastic weather we had to go out in the late afternoon, just to enjoy the warm sun. I am living in this street at the moment. The local court is close to my current home, the large building in the middle of the photo. We went away from the city centre towards the district "Reinshagen". Our path followed a railway track for a while. We walked through a rural part of the city. On the following photos you can see a very modern church, the tower is hidden behind the trees. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
we walked along a pilgrimage trail today from Wermelskirchen, one of the neighbour cities, to Altenberg Abbey in Odenthal. We followed the valley of the Eifgenbach (Eifgen creek). We walked through beautiful landscape and lovely hamlets. This is the symbol of this trail, the Way of St. James. We enjoyed the autumn sun. After about 18 km walking we reached Altenberg Abbey. |
olgamaus Posted Oct 16, 2010, 10:44 am |
Altenberg Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in Altenberg, now a part of Odenthal in the Bergisches Land. It was founded in 1133 as a daughter house of Morimond Abbey.
It is called "Altenberger Dom" although Altenberg was never the seat of a bishopric, so this is not technically accurate), is now an interdenominational church used by both Roman Catholics and Protestants. On the abbey area you can find some nice restaurants. We had coffee and cake in this one. We visited the abbey than. The West front was illuminated by sunlight. There are more buildings on the abbey ground. We also had a look into a store to buy some postcards. Of course I will write a postcard to you, Mummy. We had a look inside the church. This church in the middle of the green is a really lovely sight. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
today we met Katja's friend Kerstin and took a walk with her and her dog. When we picked them up at their home we had a look around the garden. Although it is autumn now there are still flowers. We went to Wuppertal, to Scharpenacken, a former army training area. This area was used for military purposes until 2004 A.D as a shooting range. Today there is a local recreation area with vast open areas. A lot of people come with their dogs and let them run and play here. We went along a valley then and walked to the other side of the valley. There you can find "Vorwerk-Park", a country park which was created in early 20th century by rich manufacturer, Adolf Vorwerk, as a private park for his own mansion. In 2001 the park was opened for publicity. There are some outlook points, you have a great overview across the surrounding landscape here. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
today we met Katja's friend Erika. We drove to Leverkusen, a town in Rhineland, to take a walk on the "Obstweg", which is leading along orchard meadows. Orchard meadows is an extensive grassland-orchard management system, consisting of a meadow with scattered fruit trees , usually mown once or twice a year; now an endangered, species-rich, semi-natural habitat found in cultural landscapes near villages. Unfortunately the weather was not that great. Our trip started at "NaturGut Ophoven", a manor consisting an environmental education center for kids and adults in Leverkusen. It was founded in 1984 on an old estate in the district Opladen. One of the buildings there once was part of an historic castle complex, built in 14th century. It is one of the oldest buildings in the municipal area. I saw this funny giant flower, made of discarded motorway signs. Can you see the sun collectors? When the sun is shining this flower is turning around - it must be a funny view Here you can see nesting boxes for different birds and also bats. Our path was following a creek for some time. These are Heidschnucken, a moorland sheep which you can find in Northern Germany and Northern Europe. You can find information boards all along the path, telling you interesting facts about fruit-growing and the landscape in common. Katja loves animals, so we stopped to pet this donkey. We also walked along fields, some of them already harvested and nice hamlets. When we returned to our starting point, we had a coffe in the café of Naturgut Ophoven. They have a world map and I showed Squirt my home country. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
in the afternoon we took a short walk to the municipal park. A lot of trees already lost most of the leafes. It became really cold within a few days, it is only about 5°C cold. You can find a lot of houses like those in the vicinity of my current home. Bye Owen |
olgamaus Posted Oct 30, 2010, 7:11 pm |
Hi Mummy,
we stayed at home today, having a really lazy day. Katja is knitting socks for a girl in South America and in the afternoon we decided to bake a cake. We made a cake with raisins, but not with "ordinary" raisins. The raisins were put into rum a few days ago Katja printed the receipe and pinned it to the kitchen wall. The ingredients for our cake are 250 g butter / margarine 200 g sugar 1 p vanilla sugar salt, lemon peel 4 eggs 100 ml milk 300 g wheat flour 100 g starch flour 1 p baking powder 250 g raisins chocolate icing or sugar powder Those raisins smelled delicious! First we had to grease the baking pan. The baking oven was preheated to 175°C. Katja prepared the dought. First butter was beaten with sugar and vanilla sugar, than the eggs were mixed in, than milk and flour, starch flour and baking powder. At last the raisins were put into the dough. The cake had to bake for about 75 minutes. 75 minutes later ...... We took the cake out of the baking pan ... With its chocolate topping it looked like this: Yummy! We'll taste it tomorrow. Bye Owen |

Hi Mummy,
today we visited an exhibition in Oberhausen, a city in the Ruhr area. The exhibition is called "Out Of This Word - Wonders of The Solar System". We went to Oberhausen by train. When we reached Oberhausen it was extremely foggy. The exhibition is situated in a gas holder. The whole area which is a leisure park nowadays once was a vast industrial region, mostly mining and steel production until the 1960s. Today you can find Germany's largest shopping mall here and a leisure park. The gas holder was constructed between 1927 and 1929. When it was built it was the largest gas holder in Europe stood with a height of 117.5 m and a diameter of 67.6 m. Today it is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage and serves as an exhibition hall. The present exhibition 'Out Of This World - Wonders Of The Solar System' was named an official project of RUHR.2010, the European Capital of Culture 2010. The exhibition describes the solar system as a process of growth and decay. Reproductions of the planetary system, of the planets and their moons, images of the sun, both historical instruments and modern technology of space research graphically presents the drama of the birth and development of the solar system up to its possible end. The show is centered around the 25-meter sculpture of 'the largest moon on earth. It was quite dark in the gas holder, it was difficult to take photos. Not all of our photos are of a good quality - sorry These are photos of the surfaces of planets. This is Saturn. I could see the moon above me. This is a German spacecraft, a replication I suppose. We took an elevator to get to the roof of the gas holder. Unfortunately we did not see anything. Because of its height we could have seen the whole Ruhr area if the weather had been better. We went back to the exhibition. This was a wonderful trip! Bye Owen |

And it was a short trip indeed. Already after one day I arrived in Central Germany, in Thuringia or more specifically in the village Mechterstädt.
Still I was happy to see light again. My last host olgamaus sent two nice cards and also jelly bears in the envelope. We have already eaten them - thanks a lot! I will stay here for the next weeks together with another TV called Peachy Chai. We got to know each other and had a look at my travel journal my mommy sent with me. See you! |

Well, it is getting dark here really soon each evening so we usually spend the evenings inside and enjoy our time with postcrossing or swap-bot.
Today we got these lovely Christmas calendar packages from a swapper at swap- bot. I am really curious what is inside but we are not allowed to open them before December 1st. There was also a Finnish letter in the mail today with some chocolate - yummy! And we wrote a lot of postcrossing cards to people all over the world today: It is time to go sleeping now. The house cat is so fluffy to sleep beside. Good Night ! |

Dear Mommy!
Soon it is Christmas and that is why we started baking cookies on Friday. We made four different kinds today: 'forgotten cookies', Vanillekipferl, Sahne-Krokant and butter cookies. First we went shopping for all the ingidients which are here on the table now. Then we have to read the recipe: Here we are preparing the dough. Then we have to cut the cookies.... and into the oven. Let's check: The first result. Peachy Chai helped me with all the work. The next dough has to stay in the fridge for an hour. We can use the time to prepare the third kind of cookies, the caramel ones. And into the oven once again: This is the dough for the 'forgotten cookies'. They are called like this because you leave them in the oven overnight. That is why I have to post a pic of these cookies later. But here is the final result of the other: Wish you could try, mommy! |

Dear Mommy!
Last week was pretty busy. First we went to Berlin for the weekend. We did not do any sightseeing because we went there for a b-day party... and we took the time for shopping. Here is at least a pic of the shopping centre we went to: Inside on the ceiling you could see fish swimming around just like in an aquarium. That was an interesting view! It got really cold and winter like here. It snowed! Look at the white landscape: We also decorated the house for Christmas. Let's take you on a tour: At night we light the ornaments in the windows. We also hung the christmas calendar we got from a friend at swap-bot. Only one more day before we can open the first package. I am so curious! Yesterday we went to the Christmas market in Gotha. All over the place and market square you could find stalls and christmas decoration. Here is the town hall of Gotha and the christmas pyramid in front. And we went to Mongolia... oh no, of course not! This is a mongolian yurt next to the Chinese restaurant we went for lunch. And here is one last picture of the cloister in Gotha See you next week! |

A dear hello from snowy and cold Thuringia!
Wow, it got really cold here. This morning we had -15°C. I wish I could be home in Trinidad for some warmth! My host would like to come along too .... Well, still the countryside looks great covered in snow. This morning we took some time again for Xmas baking. This time we tried Xmas cake. We baked them in little glasses so that later on we can keep them longer or give them away as presents. And into the oven... Mh, finished and done. We also baked these little fellows - Christmas bears |

On Saturday we went to Zwickau to visit the automobile museum there.
First we had to find our way through snowy streets. Then we found the entrance of the museum. Horch was one of the first car producers in Germany and he built his cars in Zwickau. Let's take a walk trough the exhibition and take a journey through time, starting at the beginning of the 20th century. I listened to the man at the petrol station and his stories: A car and its seats from the inside: An old GDR state car used for parades. And then the story of the Trabant, THE eastern German family car started: The 1,000,000th Trabant that had been produced. All together about 3 mio were built until 1990. After the reunification no-one wanted to buy this car anymore. Nowadays it's a cult car with lots of fans. |

Merry Christmas mommy! I hope you had a great time. We went to my host's parents for Christmas celebrations. Here you see the Christmas tree. Everyboday also gets a plate with sweets underneath the tree - yummy! And this is the huge pile of presents which my host got! And the pile of her brother: On Christmas Eve we had a special dinner from Besserabia where my host's dad comes from. It's made with Sauerkraut, rice and meat balls. Very delicious! We had a lot of snow. Look at the garden - everything is white. |

On December 28th 2010 we had a winter BBQ.
First we went shopping at MARKTKAUF. We got drinks..... some food for the cat too. I had a look at the DVD section too. It was already dark outside when the BBQ started. We put candles in the snow hills in the garden. To keep warm we lit a fire in a bin. I helped with grilling the steaks and sausages. But we also had salads to eat. And we had some Gluhwein to drink. |

Going by car these days is interesting.
First because streets can be very icy and one has to be careful while driving. Second because the countryside looks great. Everywhere snow. And the trees all frozen with ice and snow. They were glittering in the light. Entering the village again: |

Over new year we went on a trip to Potsdam, about 350km north, next to the Capital Berlin.
We stayed at a nice hotel and were welcomed with an interesting fruit plate. I had never seen a Salak fruit before. On Thursday night we went to Berlin to visit the Circus Roncalli with their winter revue. What a great show with clowns, horses, acrobats... I loved it! Sorry that pictures are not as good, but it was dark outside and with the flash... Inside we could not take photos durin the show. Before circus we had dinner in a restaurant at Potsdamer Platz. There was a huge light show at the Sony Centre. The restaurant we went to had Bavarian food, which is pretty strange considering we were in Berlin and Bavarian is very untypical for the region. But tourists seem to like it.... The meals looked delicious. The Schnitzel was giant. The beer too. I had a Mas (1 litre) of Weißbier. Hardly managed to drink it. The wall of fame at the restaurant - a lot of actors, politicians, musicians have visited there. |
iloveletters Posted Jan 4, 2011, 6:25 pm |
Today we took a stroll around the hotel grounds, along the lake Griebnitzsee.
In this area, which is near Babelsberg the German film mekka, there are a lot of villas that once belonged to film stars. Also politicians stayed here in 1945 after WW II for the Wannsee conference. This is the villa Truman stayed in. Here lived Marika Röck, German film star. This is Babelsberg castle in the park. Before the reunion of Germany the Berlin wall seperated Potsdam from Berlin, the lake was the natural border. That is why there are sings saying ' Mauerweg' ( wall path ). At night we went to the Silvester Gala of the hotel and celebrated until 2am the next morning. Happy new year! |

Well, mommy, I still have to show you some pictures of when we
were in Potsdam. Sorry it took longer to post them.... but my host is very busy. We took a bus tour to all the sights in and around Potsdam on our last day there. The region is famous for all the castles and parks and they are all part of one UNESCO world heritage site. The old church in Potsdam: In front there is a huge construction site where they want to rebuild the castle that was once there. Then we went on to the Big Palais: Castle Sanssouci: On the grave of King Friedrich people put down potatoes to commemorate his introducing of potatoes as a main vegetable in Germany. Then we went to Castle Cecilienhof: Were the last German emporer lived. We finished our tour in the Dutch quarter of the town. Back at the hotel I had a look into the minibar and found this: A can with .... nothing to drink but a sour cucumber - strange, these Germans... |

Mh, where to go? We went up to a little castle on the hill. What a steep path! But we had a great view over the region. On top: Look at that blue sky! |

Dear mommy,
During the winter holidays in Germany we went to the island of Mallorca in the Mediterranien Sea. We started from airport Frankfurt: We stayed in a small hotel in Port de Soller. This is me on the balcony enjoying the view of the mountains in the north of Mallorca. We walked down to the harbour on our first day. The weather was a little rainy and windy though. We walked up the moutain to hike to Soller. Though it was cloudy and cold we had a great day out. On one day we went to Palma on the historical train that connects Soller and Palma. We had sunshine all day long-phantastic. The views were brilliant! We strolled along the harbour of Palma, went to the beach. We passed the cathedral on our way. Isn't it a huge building!? Let's see what is explained on the panel: The lovely blue sea: Collecting shells on the beach: We had a great time! |

Hey mummy,
today we arrived in Uetze. Germany again! Uetze is a little village in Germany. It is near to Hanover, the capital of the federal state Lower Saxony. It is in the North of Germany. Two future TVs, the duck and squirrel (they have no names so far) and four other TVs, Winter Bear, Krtecek, Mo and Katie Pillar welcomed us very dearly. |
Zischie Posted Mar 21, 2012, 6:42 pm |
We helped baking american cookies today. The cookies were very sweet, but delicious. |
Zischie Posted Mar 23, 2012, 7:58 pm |
It was such a lovely weather today, so my host decided to show us TVs Uetze a little bit.
First station was the Junkernhof. It is the oldest building in Uetze. The Junkernhof was build 1635 from the family von Uttensen. Uetze was called "Utisson" (1022) and "Utessem" (1215) in the past. These names are deduced from the name von Uttensen. So the building had a great impact on the village. So here is the Junkernhof and a stone next to the two-storey half-timber house. |
Zischie Posted Mar 23, 2012, 8:17 pm |
The next station was the river Fuhse. The Fuhse is a stream of Lower Saxony, a left tributary of the Aller. The Fuhse originates on the west slope of the Oderwald, foothills of the Harz range between Bad Harzburg und Wolfenbüttel. The source spring lies in the municipality of Flöthe near Schladen. From there the Fuhse flows west of Salzgitter. It turns to the north and flows through Peine, Dollbergen and Uetze to Celle. In Celle (borough Neustadt) it joins the Aller. The most important tributary is the Erse, that joins the Fuhse at Uetze.
There were two ducks on the river. Unfortunately, we had no bread with us... Maybe next time? |
Zischie Posted Mar 23, 2012, 8:25 pm |
There is also a very nice bridge over the Fuhse. ^^ |

Here you can see the "Neuer Garten". It is a part of the Junkernhof. In former days, it was a restaurant. Today, you can buy it. |

The church is called "Johannes-der-Täufer-Kirche". It was built in 1867. The tower is 65 m high.
The predecessor was built in 1837, but it was destroyed in 1863 by a great fire. A stone reminds the people. |

Today, we visited Göttingen. My host studies behavioural biology here.
We went by bus and train. Here are some pictures of our drive. |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 10:04 am |
The landscape between Hannover, the capital of Lower Saxony and Göttingen. |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 10:09 am |
Finally, we arrived in Göttingen.
Göttingen (German pronunciation: [ˈɡœtɪŋən]) is a university town in Lower Saxony. It is the capital of the district of Göttingen. The Leine river runs through the town. In 2006 the population was 129,686. The first picture shows a stature next to the station. It shows Miss Charlotte Müller, the oldest street trader of the world. |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 10:29 am |
On this picture you can see the town's landmark: the "Gänseliesel". The Gänseliesel (English: Goose Girl, Goose Lizzy (Liesel as pet name of Elisabeth)) is a fountain which was erected in 1901 in front of the mediaeval town hall of Göttingen, Germany. Although rather small in size, the fountain is the most well-known landmark of the city. Today, it is an essential part of the graduation celebrations for every student who finishes a doctorate at the George August University Göttingen to climb the fountain and to kiss the statue of the goose girl. The Gänseliesel is the most kissed virgin of the world. It is forbitten now to kiss her, but tradition is tradition. |

This is a very small guy. Unfortunately I forgot his name, but he was a physicist in Göttingen and became famous for his work. |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 10:48 am |
We visited the old botanic garden. Göttingen has two botanic gardens, the old and the new one. But the old one is much more beautiful... however I think the flowers require more time. But we found a very beautiful yellow flower. |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 10:58 am |
The next picture shows a historical lantern. It stands next to the "Deutsches Theater" (German theatre). |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 11:01 am |
Then we visited Weende. This is a district of Göttingen. My host live there during the semester.
There was a very strange tree... |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 11:03 am |
There was a stone which tells something about Weende. It was founded in 966 and was an independantly community until 1964. At this time it became a district of Göttingen. As a consequence, it is the second oldest district (and it is the most beautiful side in town ). |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 11:05 am |
The St. Petri- Church is the oldest building in Weende. It was built in 1180. |
Zischie Posted Mar 28, 2012, 11:07 am |
There is also a river called Weende. The spring of the river also provides the people in Göttingen with drinking water. |

We went to Hanover to because the father of host-mum is in a hospital. But no worry, he is fine.
