Hi everyone! We said goodbye to Bally and Aslan today, and, well, everyone said bye to me, too. I had nice romp with Aslan and Peach the pooch, my birthdate buddies. I'm going to beautiful, snowy Finland. I think I'll blend right in. I asked Mom if we could give my new host a special candy bar, but I am the lucky one ... I am already the winner of a trip around the world!!! You'll see my sparkles soon! Gwennie |

Hi Mommy,
I just arrived at my new host's place in Helsinki, Finland My flight went well and I'm OK, a bit tired and hungry though. Now I'll get something to eat and after that I'll go to the city with my new friends. Photos later... Yours, Gwennie <3 |

Hi Mom,
I've had so much fun here in Helsinki. I've met some TVs and other toys and I think they are already my good friends. Here's still snow, but it's melting soon, because it has been quite warm (from -4 to +3) and sunny here lately. I'm glad I had a chance too see snow and feel it too Kerttu, Bernd the Bread Manu the Rubber Duck and Blinchick were there waiting for me when I came out of the envelope. Art first I was a bit shy, but soon I noticed they all were really nice and kind so I started to chat with them. I also gave them the chocolate bar and the postcard and they were happy to see some real Willy Wonka Chocolate - they had seen Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie last week (Pictures 1-3) I also met my host's cat called Lauri. He was really interested in me and when he licked my face I knew he had approved me. (Pictures 4 and 5) Now I have taken even a nap with him, he's nice and warm. Crizle the Unicorn welcomed me to Finland too and she was pleased to meet another unicorn - and so was I. (Picture 6) I ate some delicious soup and took a nap after my lounch. My host said it would be a good idea to sleep for some time, because we'd go to the city later and she was right - I felt myself quite tired after my long flight. (Picture 7) I went to the city with my host - the others stayed at home. We went there by a tram and my host told me that it is the fastest way to travel in the city. There is a tram stop right at her front door and it takes only about 10-15 minutes from her place to the city. Here you can see me in a tram. (Pictures 8-10) This tram was an old one and they also have quite modern ones here in Helsinki, but my host said that she likes the old ones more - they seem to have more personality than the new trams. We bought a big latte and took it with us. (Picture 11) I think the Finnish coffee is strong and tasty - I liked it very much. I got a nice sightseeing while we we sat in a tram, but my host promised me we would go to the city quite often and I'd got to see all the sights better later. This time the trams and the latte were more than enough for me as my first adventure here in Helsinki - and of course snow too. I got to see snow and walk on snow too - it was great (Pictures 12-14) Here you can see the building I live now - we live on the 8th floor (Picture 15) and here you can see me on the balcony. (Picture 16) The day after I arrived here another TV came here too. His name is Mister Snow and he is from Germany. Btw, Bernd is from Germany too and Blinchick is from Russia. We went to a nice café for a latte and ice cream - my host said it was a welcoming party for me and Mister Snow. I loved the chocolate ice cream and the latte was good too. (Pictures 17-19) We sat at the café for a long time talking and it was awesome to hear more about the other TVs and their adventures. They have travelled a lot and Blinchick came here from Chile - can you believe that Mom? Do you think I could travel there too someday? On Thursday we all travelled by a bus to a huge shopping center. There were lots of people so we stayed in Kirsi's bag so we wouldn't get lost. We went to the ticket service and there was a beautiful red coach, we rested there for a while; the lady of the ticket service was having a lounch break. (Picture 20) My host bought tickets to a concert for her and her boyfriend. We came back home by a bus and this time it was almost empty so we took some photos in there. (Picture 21) At home I played with my friends. Kerttu likes to think I'm a horse, but I don't mind that - she is still a kid. (Picture 22) Yesterday my host worked as an assistant/extra at a shooting for Police TV. I was in her bag with my new friends and we heard everything what was happening. It was really interesting and I'm glad I got to stay in the bag, because later my host told us it was really cold out there and she was freezing after the shooting. At home we ate and took a nap and later in the evening we went to the concert. Unfortunately it was not allowed to take any pictures there, but we enjoyed the concert and it was interesting to hear live Finnish music. OK, now it's already past my bedtime so I'll go to bed. Hugs, Gwennie |

Hi friends!
This is my second day at my new home, freed from a charity shop to travel the WORLD! That is why my birthday is yesterday ... I wasn't really born yesterday, though. This is me and my good buddy Aslan having fun reading and learning French with other toyvoyagers. We are looking at the Table of Contents to find the snow pictures for Hypno-dog. I don't know why snow is so interesting to him but I admit I have a lot to learn about the world and I am so looking forward to playing in the snow. I should be almost invisible. Flipping through we found the snow. Snow, ice and eskimos. Now it's time to draw and play. This magazine has color pencils taped to the front cover. I've never seen that! This puzzle was too easy for us. Now this puzzle is good and hard. What are the 6 differences between the two pictures. Even Miss Kate is scratching her head. She says the first reader who PMs her with the 6 differences will win a prize. Fun! {As of May 2011, the prize is still available!!} I can't wait to see the world! Will you host me?? Gwennie |

Hi Mom,
Yes, I'm fine and still here in Helsinki. My host had had some huge problems with her computer (and she still does) and her health so we haven't been able to update my travelog in a long time. Hmmmmm, so much has happenend since I last wrote here. Maybe I should let all the photos speak for themselves. Well, short explaining at first. Many TVs has left and many has arrived. I've got some great new friends and I'd like to believe I can meet them again someday somewhere... I've travelled a lot here by busses and trams with my host and with other TVs. I've met Moomins and and seen the Lutheran Cathedral of Helsinki. I also saw the most important building of Helsinki - the Main Post Office. My host is addicted to Postcrossing and postcards so that might have something to do with the most important building I think I've been in many postcrossing meetings and written lots of postcards. I've had fun and I've learned to like Finnish coffee, especially latte. And of course I've seen snow here, lots and lots of snow OK, now I'll show "some" photos to you dear Mom |
Huppu68 Posted Jun 1, 2011, 9:45 pm |
Hi again Mom,
We had a great Easter here. We were hunting eggs and we found lots of chocolate eggs. (Picture 1-4) Finnish chocolate is really delicious A week from Easter it was the MayDay, the First of May or Vappu as they call it here in Finland. It's a big celebration for students and most of the people. It's almost like a Finnish carneval. We had a peaceful Vappu at home. We ate some doughnuts and had balloons. It was a nice day and it also means that now spring is here. (Picture 5) In the sunny days we like to sit out in the balcony and have some latte or ice latte. It's just nice to sunbathe sitting in a chair with friends (Pictures 6 and 7) We have also watched some movies when it has been rainy or too cold to go out. We always had pop corn too (Picture 8) Finnish ice cream is very tasty and we've eaten that together many times when we've celebrated something. (Pictures 9-11) |

Earlier one of my life missions was to visit in an European grocery store and I'm in Europe now so of course I visit in many of them. Here are some pictures of our nearest crosery store. Btw, smoked salmon is very good here |
Huppu68 Posted Jun 1, 2011, 10:10 pm |
Well, it's the beginning of June and summer is almost here. I think it's time for me to travel again, I need to see new places and meet new people. I know I'll miss my Finnish friends, but new adventures are waiting for me. Today we went to a park and I saw some blossoming appletrees - they smelled wonderful. (Pictures 1 and 2) We sat there on a bench and enjoyed the beautiful and warm day. (Picture 3) Then we went to a small café to have a latte and say goodbyes - it was time for me to go. A few tears, big hugs, nice words and then I jumped into an envelope. (Pictures 4 and 5) My host took me to post office and I'm on my way to the United Kingdom now. I'm excited - and a bit sad too, but that goes by when I'll arrive to my new host's place.
Thank you Helsinki! Thank you Kirsi, my host! Thank you my sweet friends! Kisses and hugs, I miss you Mom! -Gwennie |

Hello? Anyone there? I have been lying in this envelope for ages... Help! zzzzz!
What is that noise? Is that a key I hear? It is it is!.... Finally, I get out of my envelope! My host thinks I arrived yesterday through the letterbox, today is Sunday and there is no post on a Sunday. Anyway, I am here... |
miapearl Posted Jun 20, 2011, 12:42 pm |
Today looks to be a nice day. My host decides to take some of us on a bus. When we get there, her stomach rumbles to she goes to a nice cafe for lunch.
As soon as she walks out of the door after lunch, it starts to rain. No matter, we head to somewhere dry. This is the base station for the Snowdon Mountain Railway, in Llanberis. This train will be going up Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. This is a picture of it on the way up. A train has arrived bringing people back down from the top. Look at the engine! The rain clears but it is time to head home. I hope we don't have very long to wait for the bus! |
miapearl Posted Jun 23, 2011, 3:41 pm |
Hi Mum,
The weather cleared up and we have gone to the allotment. Pretty flowers! Gigantic rhubarb leaves. Gooseberries. Strawberries and other fruit. Can you see the cherry? Are these broad beans ready yet? |
miapearl Posted Jun 27, 2011, 7:59 pm |
Hi Mum,
We are on our way up Snowdon by train. My host grabbed a seat by the window looking backwards A red light. We have to wait for another train to go by. Can you see the other train? We have arrived at another station and await a train to go by. We will soon be in the clouds. We reached the top. There is a visitor centre with cafe and facilities. The train leaves in 30 mins but we have time to reach the actual top. Visibility isn't that good. We climbed up to the top. 1085m high! It was windy and my host wasn't patient enough to take a good photo. It is almost time for the journey down. We sat on the other side of the carriage. Hebron is one of the little stations. There we are, back in Llanberis. Our engine was called Snowdon There goes the next train up, pushed by the engine called Wyddfa. Our train reversed out and will wait for Wyddfa to go by before coming to the other platform to form the next train up. |

Hi Mum,
Today, we've been out Geocaching. The co-ordinates are for Llanberis village, near where the second of today's finds was found. The first one we found was in a field. There are clouds over the hills in the background. Ouch! The wind blew me off into some nettles. These sting! A nice view down Lake Padarn. Today, I don't think they'd see much from the top of Snowdon. This is a sneaky Geocache. |

Today, a new visitor arrived.
Welcome Lupus-Tigger. |
miapearl Posted Jul 8, 2011, 8:34 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today, we went somewhere by bus. We went to Bangor. We got off at the top of this hill but the shop is on the road at the bottom of the hill. Look at those clouds, and some of Snowdonia's hills and mountains. |

Hi Mum,
My host collected lots of redcurrants from the currant bushes in her back garden. There were too many to eat, so she found a recipe in a book to make sorbet. First, my host washed the currants and then weighed them. They were then boiled for a couple of minutes in a small amount of water. Then, she added some honey and whipped cream before pouring it into a container before freezing. She stirred it a few times before letting it freeze properly. |

Hello Mum,
Today is a beautiful day and we've come to the local agricultural show just outside Caernarfon. The first place we visited was the poultry tent. They had many chickens on display... This one is a prize winner. Afterwards, we check out the crafts tent. Look at these crafty spiders... And these funny wooden spoons Outside, there were some old tractors. I can't reach the steering wheel. They also had different kinds of livestock. These piggies are hot. Baa! |
miapearl Posted Jul 29, 2011, 6:30 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today my host was dropped off in Chester (her husband, son and son's friend went to an outdoor adventure park). The traffic was bad because it was race day. Chester hosts horseracing on the flat. The first race is underway. The horses are racing at the back somewhere (not really visible in this photo). My host didn't come to Chester for the races (she didn't know it was on). We went for a walk around the city walls. Chester lies on the River Dee. This part of the wall was home to the Round Tower.... near the Old Dee Bridge. The stone weir was built in the 11th century, providing water power. we see boats taking people on river trips. The weir looks quite impressive. Chester was around in Roman times. This is the Roman gardens. This is perhaps the most recognised place in Chester, the Eastgate Clock. Down below, there are the shops. The city is busy today. Further round the wall, we come to the bit overlooking the canal. Another gate. Can you see the fountains on the roundabout? We've finished our tour of the city walls and have come back to the racecourse. A race will be starting soon and the horses are going down to the start. Here they come racing... Who is going to win? A horse with 4 legs and a jockey on board! The black and white buildings are another character of Chester. Can you see a bit of Chester's cathedral? There's the clock again.. And it is time to make our way to the meeting point to get picked up and taken home! |
miapearl Posted Aug 3, 2011, 1:31 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today, my host and her husband decided to go for a walk along some of the Anglesey coastal path. We are on the north side of the island. This is the old brickworks at Porth Wen, and made silica bricks for the steel industry. We didn't go further down, but my host's husband did. This is an old lookout at Dinas Gynfor. Can you see the path on the hill over there? That's the route we'll be taking. This is Porth Llanlleiana, another relic of Anglesey's industrial past. A long way down and then a long way up the other hill! Taking a breather! This is the church of Saint Badrig. A panorama. This is a nice beach, Porth Badrig. Nearly at the end of the walk. Pleasant day out, apart from my little legs aching! |
miapearl Posted Aug 3, 2011, 2:09 pm |
Hi Mum,
Last week, my host took us into town. Look what we saw in the Castle... It looks like a Tardis... We didn't have time to go to the castle that day.... But today, we do have time... Can you see it? The Doctor Who television series is made (produced) in Wales. The Tardis is visiting some historic places in Wales. Time for a look round the castle. Up to one of the towers we came.. The river is the Seiont and comes from Padarn Lake (that's in Llanberis). That's the dais where Prince Charles was crowned the Prince of Wales in 1969. Another tower climbed... Back at ground level for a rest.. The Queen's Tower.. Spiral staircase at the bottom of one of the towers but our little leggies are tired . Time for a rest! Cannons! And then back to the Tardis for one last look before heading home... |
miapearl Posted Aug 3, 2011, 2:52 pm |
We have come to my host's mum's house!
There are lots of ants in the garden. This book says that ants don't like crossing chalk! There's an ant... It still is in the same section... Hmm, it has escaped. The ants we've watched seem quite happy to cross the chalk. Back to the drawing board. |
miapearl Posted Aug 3, 2011, 3:07 pm |
Hi Mum,
Do you know where I am? I am lost in the maze in maize. There is a quiz sheet and questions but the answerboards are hidden throughout the maze. On the board there is a letter. When all the answers have been found, these letters make up the answer to another question. My host has obscured the letters. The theme of this maze is the rainforest. With questions on the rainforest creatures... Including butterlies... What's a Binturong? Cute... There's another bridge so we can look across the ma(i)ze. And a bench at the eye to rest... |
miapearl Posted Aug 10, 2011, 3:19 pm |
Today there is a little country fayre at Whaplode Drove, a few miles from where we are staying.
There are vintage cars on show. And other vintage things. Not so vintage is this jelly! These jellies will be thrown and hopefully caught! Yay, she caught some. Oh dear! Unfortunately, not all those jellies were caught in the World Jelly-Throwing Championship. The one organiser has to clear up! |
miapearl Posted Aug 10, 2011, 5:13 pm |
On our way back home to Wales, we stopped off in Nottingham. A shop my host wanted to go to was closed, and the caves her husband wanted to see were also closed.
Instead, we had a brief wander around. Could that be Robin Hood? Back in the centre, there was something unexpected. A beach! They also had a mini funfair, and a permanent water feature. They even have trams. |
miapearl Posted Aug 25, 2011, 1:00 pm |
The weather hasn't been all that great so we've stayed indoors. Tomorrow, the weather may be good enough to go out somewhere |
miapearl Posted Aug 25, 2011, 1:41 pm |
Hi Mum,
We've come out today to Spaceport, in Seacombe on the Wirral. Here, I am learning about our Sun, the tides, .. and the phases of the moon. This is a model of Beagle 2, the mission to Mars that unfortunately got lost. A space suit. There was a table with Star Wars replicas. Hello R2D2. Upstairs, they had a Wallace and Gromit exhibition. This rocket is from A Grand Day Out. Curse of the Were-Rabbit. A Close Shave An Aardman rocket. That's The Shopper 13. We could get our hands on modelling clay. What is that? What are these we've created? Re-entry to Earth has its problems! I've had a grand day out! |
miapearl Posted Sep 17, 2011, 12:13 pm |
Hi Mum,
After going to Spaceport, we went for a drive on the Wirral. We came to West Kirby. The tide was out and we started walking to the little islands. I'm at the little island looking back towards the mainland. The view to another island. This is the middle island. Can you see the mainland through the gap? It seems a long way out. That building is on the third island, Hilbre but we didn't make it that far. It was getting late and we had a long walk back to the mainland. |
miapearl Posted Sep 23, 2011, 9:26 pm |
Hello Mum,
Today, we went to the Sea Zoo on the Isle of Anglesey. These fish swim too fast to get photographed clearly. These are flatfish. More fish! This is a sunstar starfish Sea anemones and things. Sea anemones can be quite pretty. A happy fish? There are seahorses somewhere in the picture. This is a board for visitors to draw their favourite sea creatures. The big aquarium has spiny crabs, and more fish. |
miapearl Posted Sep 23, 2011, 9:35 pm |
What have we here in this box?
Hello Jellybean |
miapearl Posted Oct 3, 2011, 11:22 am |
Hello Mum,
My host took us out for a bus ride or two. We sat on the top deck at the front of the bus. The weather looks a bit grim. It is a bit of a bumpy ride. That, atop the hill over there, is Criccieth Castle |
miapearl Posted Oct 3, 2011, 11:36 am |
Hello Mum,
Today, we went to the allotment. My host has a new pond on her plot. There's a bed full of parsnips. What is my host going to do with those pumpkins? Doesn't this green broccoli/calabrese look yummy? |
miapearl Posted Oct 11, 2011, 11:40 am |
Hello Mum,
Today, we went to Llandudno, a popular coastal town in North Wales. They have a cable car that goes up the big hill called the Great Orme. It is possible to walk up the Orme by several routes, but we are taking a quicker/more relaxing way up. There's a church and cemetary. This is St. Tudno's and the town (parish) is named after him in Welsh. We sat on the other side of the cable car. We can see the trams. Down that way is Conwy. Nice fluffy clouds Going down now. On the Promenade. There's the Little Orme. There's the pier and a hotel. Had a pleasant day out. |
miapearl Posted Oct 11, 2011, 2:59 pm |
Hello Mum,
Today, we went for a woodland walk in Glynllifon, a country estate. We cross a bridge over a small stream. This is the estate house. There are gardens and water features.. Not only is the water cascading, it is also raining... A fountain (it was also visible from behind the cascade). |
miapearl Posted Oct 11, 2011, 3:33 pm |
Hello Mum!
Today we walked across Menai Bridge to Anglesey. The Menai Straits below are not the easiest to navigate. My host says that there is a very sneaky Geocache hidden here! Can you see the Britannia Bridge in the distance? We jumped on a bus to Beaumaris. This is Beaumaris castle. It has a moat! I sneaked between the railings for a better photo! Beaumaris has a courthouse. Charles Dickens was a visitor to see the trials. There is also a gaol but we didn't have time to visit it. Some of the hills of Snowdonia in the background. Beaumaris was host to a local Eisteddfod. The stones are part of the Eisteddfod. The pier and dock area of Beaumaris is being renovated and the boats are here temporarily. |
miapearl Posted Oct 11, 2011, 3:54 pm |
Hello!
Today, we've come to a castle built for King Edward I. This is Rhuddlan Castle. I don't recognise that flag. I do recognise the Welsh flag though. Having a rest! We are on top of the wall. We can see for miles... Another rest in the ditch! The castle sits atop a hill! One of the towers of the outer wall. |
miapearl Posted Oct 11, 2011, 4:07 pm |
After Rhuddlan castle, some of us went to Talacre to see the lighthouse.
It could do with a lick of paint |
miapearl Posted Oct 11, 2011, 4:18 pm |
Hello!
To celebrate Clyde's arrival and also to wish some of us who are travelling to pastures new we shared a doughnut! |
miapearl Posted Oct 25, 2011, 11:46 pm |
Today, my host's son's school was closed due to strike action. So, we decided to go out to the zoo. My host took lots of photos.
I think these are a sea lions. It looks so graceful underwater. They swim quite fast and my host has trouble getting nice photos with them. Here are some penguins. This is an ape. This is a different sort of ape. This is a meerkat. There are a few of them here, but I hope I didn't frighten them back into their holes. I'm not sure what type of ape this is. The water is green but there is a menace. An alligator... Squizzle's relatives are in this large cage. A tiger. We've come back to see the meerkats. There are also porcupines too. They are having dinner! A porcupine. This ape is about to have a snack. And so is this ape. And now this big cat, a snow leopard. This cat had a prowl around and has sat with its back to me, charming. It has moved again. There are two big cats.. |
miapearl Posted Oct 25, 2011, 11:47 pm |
Today, we welcomed a new visitor Tiger Lilly Clyde was shy so we had another photo taken. |
miapearl Posted Oct 25, 2011, 11:54 pm |
Today we went to a ruined slate mill. There is a geocache here too which we found.
"Inside" the mill. The mill was not situated at the quarry due to no water (for power). The slate was transported by a tramway. |
miapearl Posted Nov 4, 2011, 11:00 am |
Today, we've come to Padarn Country Park in Llanberis for a walk.
First, we stopped off a the Vivian Quarry diving pond. These divers are doing their checks before they jump in. Geronimo! Second diver jumps... And the third one makes a splash. And goes to join the others... They are starting to go down... Can you still see them? Just about... Can't see them now.. Do you see that cart dangling above the lake.. We are higher up now. There's that dangling cart. This is a brake wheel. Slate was moved down the hill in little trucks. The Quarry hospital. View from the hospital across the lake towards the hills/mountains. Now we are walking back towards the village. |
miapearl Posted Nov 4, 2011, 11:40 pm |
Today, we come to a hands-on science/engineering musuem near the historic town of Ironbridge.
Here, this exhibit shows the water cycle. There are information computers with a remote to be pointed at the ? - there's a crash test dummy, still and motion picture cameras, pianola, .. This is a tessellation puzzle. Can we do this one? How does this look? More exhbits - another pianola, an engine, bellows... bicycle powered pump, meccano rollercoaster... dentist chair... There is a sports exhibition. Imagine riding this bicycle... A swimsuit.. Howzat! Football boots, a few decades old... A drill... A small ball exhibit thing, with conveyor belts, scoops,... Back to the puzzles again... Do you like our Tangram Candle? A "recycling" machine thing. A boat What's inside a teddy bear? or a guitar? or a turntable? Anyway, it is an amazing place but unfortunately, they are closing for the day so we have to leave... |
miapearl Posted Nov 9, 2011, 4:15 pm |
It is a beautiful day for a walk.
There's a funny stone structure over there... I think we'll be going to look at it. The rock "cliff" on the left is Over Owler Tor, I think. There it is, Mother Cap I think is its name. This is a funny looking rock! It has a smiley face! |
miapearl Posted Nov 9, 2011, 7:58 pm |
We are looking out of the window at the big wide world. Some of us are leaving for new adventures.
Bon Voyage and take care. |
miapearl Posted Nov 9, 2011, 8:05 pm |
Tomorrow is Bonfire Night, but there are some bonfires and fireworks display tonight.
We have come to this big bonfire manned by the fire brigade. My host did take some photos of fireworks with us, but she can't see us in them (we are too dark), so here is one we saw! |
miapearl Posted Nov 9, 2011, 10:24 pm |
Today is another nice day. We have come to Ty^ (the ^ is above the y) Hyll, The Ugly House near Betws-y-Coed.
The house is currently closed but the gardens are open. This is the back of the house. And the view across the road. The house was reputed to have been built overnight in order to claim the land. We stopped off in Betws-y-Coed to get refreshments. We parked on the other side of the river and had to walk across the bridge. |
miapearl Posted Nov 9, 2011, 10:29 pm |
Tonight is bonfire night, and we've come to a fireworks display
My host took many photos of fireworks with us and without us but she can't see us in any (it was too dark) when she looked through them on the computer. This is one we saw. |
miapearl Posted Nov 17, 2011, 10:31 am |
We've come back to near Betws-Y-Coed. There's a geocache near here... I wonder where it could be!
I wonder where it could be! A little waterfall... This is Miners Bridge. The view down the river. The view up the river. |
miapearl Posted Nov 17, 2011, 10:32 am |
Next, we went a couple of mile on the other side of Betws Y Coed to Conwy Falls. It was a pleasant walk to the falls. And we walked a different way back. |
miapearl Posted Nov 17, 2011, 10:34 am |
It was getting late, we caught this dusk view of Snowdon on the way home. |

Today, we, that is us toyvoyagers and prospective travellers, welcomed a new visitor, Mr Wilson. |
miapearl Posted Nov 18, 2011, 11:54 am |
Today, we came to Denbigh to do some geocaching. The day wasn't that great for many photos...
we found this cache... Then we found this "police car" in a little green bag hidden in a tree quite near the police station! |
miapearl Posted Nov 19, 2011, 9:09 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today, we went out for lunch in Menai Bridge and then walked over Menai Suspension Bridge to the bus stop. There is a second bridge that crosses the Menai Straits. Can you see the Britannia Bridge? We had a look out over the bridge on the other side. Beaumaris is in the distance, as is Bangor Pier though barely visible in this picture. Somewhere in this picture, there is a very sneaky geocache that my host had found a previous occasion. This is the bridge from the mainland. |
miapearl Posted Nov 19, 2011, 9:18 pm |
Today, new ToyVoyager tags arrived. We gathered around them with the prospective travellers... They looked excited... Who will be chosen to go on an exciting adventure around the world?
Today is also the day Clyde leaves for pastures new. Wil miss you my dear brother! |
miapearl Posted Nov 19, 2011, 11:12 pm |
We've come to the allotments
These are nice looking leeks. This cabbage looks nice. |
miapearl Posted Nov 19, 2011, 11:22 pm |
We are going for a little walk.
We've come to a sandy place near Conwy. There's an island out there in the distance. That's me! No words needed! We found a geocache and this is a travel bug. |
miapearl Posted Nov 24, 2011, 10:51 am |
Hello Mum
Christmas is in the air, the shops are full of Christmas things. We have come to a garden centre in the middle of Anglesey Nice decorations Lights. Nice white artificial tree. A cute owl. |
miapearl Posted Nov 30, 2011, 12:20 pm |
We've come out for a walk, but first, a geocache
is near here. A tree! This is the only nuclear power station in Wales still active. Wylfa is a Magnox reactor. This is the Esgair Cemlyn and is a naturally created shingle ridge. The way we came. It will be dark soon, with the sun setting over the lagoon. A closer shot of the power station. |
miapearl Posted Dec 12, 2011, 11:12 am |
My host is doing a jigsaw
She isn't quite finished yet... Luc Zeke is leaving today. For travel, he's popped back into his egg. ... |
miapearl Posted Dec 12, 2011, 12:05 pm |
We welcomed a new visitor to my host's home
His name is KalliHH |
miapearl Posted Dec 12, 2011, 12:14 pm |
My host had put in some dried fruit for soaking in brandy the other day.
Today, we will make the Christmas cake. The butter and sugar is being creamed. Eggs were added. Flour, spices, the fruit, nuts and treacle also get added. The cake will take 4 hours in the oven, after our bedtimes. Maybe we'll have a photo with it when the cake is fed some more brandy. |
miapearl Posted Dec 12, 2011, 7:42 pm |
Today, we've come out late to Porthmadog to find a Geocache.
We are in a bird hide. Porthmadog is a coastal town and is sited on the estuary of the River Glaslyn. On another occasion, my host has seen a red-breasted merganser bird. I can't see any birds out there. This is a geocache, with the logsheets in a 35mm film canister. It is getting dark and time to go home. |
miapearl Posted Dec 16, 2011, 7:42 pm |
Today, we went for a walk. We've come to Penrhos Coastal Park on Anglesey.
It is a bit windy. The coastal park also has a woodland. They have a pet cemetery. Having a rest on Tunnicliffe's seat. We saw some fungi. Not sure why this yellow bear is on the fence post. Holyhead mountain is in the distance. Near here is a geocache. The geocache was found but we didn't want to reveal the exact location of it. More fungi. Brr, it is cold. |
miapearl Posted Dec 20, 2011, 10:53 am |
Oh dear...
There's a piece missing.... |
miapearl Posted Dec 20, 2011, 10:55 am |
We heard that there had been snow in the mountains, so we jumped on a bus
and headed out to them. Can you see the snow on the mountain? We came to Llanberis. This is Padarn Lake. On the other side of the lake is where the Quarry Hospital is. We were over there in October. Ducks! It is too late in the year to go on the train up Snowdon, in fact, they are closed for the off-peak season and are doing maintenance. The view may not have been good either, though perhaps better than when I went to the summit! Snow isn't all that far down the mountain. Before the bus home, we had time for a quick look at Dolbadarn Castle. You can't see the really snowy mountain in the background! |
miapearl Posted Dec 20, 2011, 11:19 am |
We've come out to Porthmadog to go shopping, but first, a look at the snowy mountains. |
miapearl Posted Dec 20, 2011, 11:23 am |
Some houses on my host's estate have outside decorations. |
miapearl Posted Jan 11, 2012, 11:46 am |
We went to my host's mum's for Christmas.
We heard they were doing the tree so we all came for a look. These lights work! We hid among the tinsels The tree is going to look good.[img][/img] |
miapearl Posted Jan 12, 2012, 11:57 am |
What is behind us in the wrapping paper? Gold! |
miapearl Posted Jan 12, 2012, 4:08 pm |
We've come out for a New Year's Eve walk to the beach.
The brown layer is Carrstone, a sandstone with cement. Above, there is red and white chalk. The old lighthouse sits atop the cliffs. The sun will set soon. There isn't as much white chalk on the cliff, some had fallen down. |
miapearl Posted Jan 12, 2012, 4:14 pm |
We are going to enjoy the rest of 2011 and relax. Tomorrow is a new year! |
miapearl Posted Jan 12, 2012, 4:15 pm |
Happy New Year.
Today, we've come for a New Year's Walk at Freiston Shore. It is an RSPB nature reserve. The weather wasn't all that great but at least it was dry. |
miapearl Posted Jan 20, 2012, 10:38 am |
Today, we'll be making our way back home to Wales. I wonder if we'll stop off anywhere interesting. |
miapearl Posted Jan 20, 2012, 10:51 am |
On our way home, we went via Magna, an industrial science museum set in an old steelworks near Rotherham/Sheffield.
The museum is in 4 sections. The first section we visited was Fire. A fire tornado Then, we headed to air after a quick look at this metal can magnet game. This thing blows air to generate "music" at the press of buttons. Then, onto water Lots of possibilities to get wet but we didn't bring any towels, so will be careful. A water blaster.. Those cones will get full of water when someone raises the water up a rope or something. Those balls are being kept in the air! Then, we went on to Earth This film is showing the Earth. We arrived here late and didn't have time to put our hard hats on. |
miapearl Posted Jan 26, 2012, 11:05 am |
We got back home safely but haven't done much. Travelling is tiring!
A package arrived Henrik came to see us! Someone new to talk to! However, Mr Wilson and KalliHH are leaving tomorrow |
miapearl Posted Feb 9, 2012, 10:03 am |
Today, we went to Garden Organic's Ryton Gardens near Coventry for a Potato Day.
Look at all these spuds! There were so many different ones. Golden Wonder is a crisp brand perhaps taken from the name of the potato used to make them. It was a pleasant day so we walked around the gardens. Tasty Kale! Pretty flowers, cyclamen. Ryton Gardens has many little gardens. This is a small garden. This is the biodynamic garden. The compost bin display. My host has "dalek" type bins plus a compost box at the allotment. This is the cook's garden. The pond in the children's garden has some ice. There's a little house, some wooden things to bong. |
miapearl Posted Feb 24, 2012, 9:33 am |
After leaving Ryton Gardens, we had time to stop off in Ironbridge at Enginuity, a hands-on science centre.
Look what is inside a teddy. A Dyson washing machine. And some model ships. The ? are to be aimed at with a special remote to activate a commentary There's a bicycle powered thing. A crazy boiler! Wind Power. There are different numbers of sails to experiment in the wind. Water power and dams. Tessellations. Can we put this back together? I think so... Yes we can! Another one! Done! Let's have a race in the Norgren Climbing Challenge! A tie! |
miapearl Posted Mar 4, 2012, 5:52 pm |
There's no snow other parts of the UK have had significant snowfall but we've had none. |
miapearl Posted Mar 4, 2012, 6:01 pm |
Surely there must be some snow on the mountains... so we went out to check, to Llanberis.
There it is.. Though there isn't as much as what fell at my host's mum's! Brr! |
miapearl Posted Mar 7, 2012, 2:08 pm |
We haven't been out recently, my host's family have been redecorating the house slowly. Anyway, this room was recently finished and is now a workshop and jigsaw area.
We decided to help my host's son do The Periodic Table jigsaw puzzle he received for Christmas. Gwen Jolie and Zed Dog found a jigsaw piece of Bismuth to put in. We all dived in to have a look for more pieces to put in the puzzle. This piece should complete the horse made of Tin. Fits nicely. |
miapearl Posted Mar 9, 2012, 8:48 pm |
The postman came with a packet...
I wonder who is inside. It is Squizzle My host is attempting a 3000 piece jigsaw of the Mappa Mundi. How long will it take if we help? |
miapearl Posted Mar 16, 2012, 10:33 am |
Look who has come to help with the 3000-piece jigsaw
Hello Shesh and Lizzy Lizard |
miapearl Posted Mar 30, 2012, 10:56 am |
Hi Mum,
My host heard about a craft and seed fair in Conwy, a historic walled town about an hour away by bus. We came early on the bus and shared a nice pot of tea over breakfast. Conwy lies on a river mouth. There is an RNLI station so we had a look at the lifeboat. This is a "mussels" statue Beautiful day to be messing about on the river. We went for a short walk along the town walls. Afterwards, my host bought some seeds. |
miapearl Posted Apr 10, 2012, 8:37 pm |
Hi Mum,
Just wanted to say Hi. We are going out somewhere in a few minutes. I wonder where.... |
miapearl Posted Apr 10, 2012, 8:40 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today, we have come to the seaside town of Rhyl on the North Wales coast There are some amusement rides here for the kiddies. There is a beach though it does look a bit cold down there with the wind. No wonder there are wind turbines out at sea. The Sky tower is undergoing refurbishment. So, we decided to take a look at Terror Tombs, I am a brave Unicorn. I glow under UV! I am not frightened... |
miapearl Posted Apr 11, 2012, 1:44 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today, we've come to the allotment. There's a big black cat snoozing the afternoon away. Time for a little nibble on some fresh purple sprouting broccoli. Pretty blossom on the greengage tree. |
miapearl Posted Apr 15, 2012, 8:03 pm |
Hi Mum,
After visiting the allotment, we went for a mystery drive. My host says there is a geocache this side of the bridge we crossed. Here it is! We had to cross the tracks of the Welsh Highland Railway. We looked both ways to check the crossing was clear. Then on the way back, we stopped off at a garage with a carwash. The car should be sparkling clean shortly! |
miapearl Posted Apr 15, 2012, 8:08 pm |
Hi Mum,
Just wanted to say Hi. We are going out somewhere. And a package has arrived. We'll have to open it when we get there. |
miapearl Posted Apr 15, 2012, 8:20 pm |
Hi Mum,
We've arrived safely at my host's mum's house. Now it is time to see what is in the package. Hello Yetta Bear |
miapearl Posted Apr 15, 2012, 8:49 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today, we've come to Hunstanton It is a bit windy on the prom. And a bit chilly to play on the beach. So we've come into the aquarium. There's a toilet under water with an octopus hiding behind it! There are many different tanks. The fish won't stand still for their photos to be taken! This horseshoe crab has its back to us. That's a shark. We are in the shark tunnel. They have other fish in with the sharks. And a turtle, only 8 years old. Another shark |
miapearl Posted Apr 15, 2012, 8:58 pm |
Hi Mum,
It is my host's birthday soon, and my host's mum doesn't live too far away from LittleBlogFrog So, we hijacked my host's toyvoyagers account and decided to contact LittleBlogFrog for help with presents. We wrote a message to her asking her to meet us at King's Lynn the next day, to see if she has any ideas what my host would like. |
miapearl Posted Apr 15, 2012, 9:16 pm |
Hi Mum,
We heard back from LittleBlogFrog and she has agreed to meet us. But first, the little problem of getting there! Come on bus. We didn't have to wait too long and now we are sat at the back of the bus. When we get there, we'll see if we can run off with my host's mum to meet LittleBlogFrog We met her and have a present for my host! We caught up with my host when she was looking at the "egg" |
miapearl Posted Apr 15, 2012, 9:27 pm |
Hi Mum,
It is time to wrap up my host's birthday present. Done! And then my host's mum gave us an Easter chocolate each. |
miapearl Posted Apr 26, 2012, 6:20 pm |
Hi Mum,
We have stopped off at Wrexham's Techniquest, a hands on science centre. Here we are investigating vocal cords. The different shapes produce different sounds. A gravity well. We like watching the balls go round. I can't remember what my host said. A maze to go through. My host's hand has some heat. We read about nebulas. Orion. I appear to be on the ceiling! |
miapearl Posted Apr 26, 2012, 6:53 pm |
Happy birthday to my host.
I hope you like our present to you.. |
miapearl Posted Apr 26, 2012, 6:56 pm |
Happy Birthday Mum
|
miapearl Posted May 9, 2012, 10:07 am |
Hi Mum,
Today, we are travelling by steam train! We are leaving Porthmadog station. We are at the back of the train. We are crossing the cob. We stopped at Minffordd station, where a train passed us. There's some nice scenery This is Llyn Tanygrisiau. We've arrived at Blaenau Ffestiniog, and the engine is going to pull us back. There are a couple of tunnels on the journey. Can you see the ToyVoyager tag? Flash! We are returning over the cob, with some of Snowdonia's mountains in the background. Looking out over the estuary. The engine is fuelling up. |
miapearl Posted May 9, 2012, 10:11 am |
Hi Mum,
A package arrived... Hello MuhKuh |
miapearl Posted May 17, 2012, 4:21 pm |
We have come to the Victorian Extravaganza in Llandudno.
There is some live music, with banjoes. There is a rifle range but we didn't have a try. A helterskelter A little engine. A band on its way to the bandstand A little railway A "wind-up doll" in front of an old traction engine. Chair-o-plane and a little big wheel A traction engine And it is on the move My host's son is on this ride. My host and her family didn't fancy a ride on this tall thing. Legs dangle. My host has been on this sort of ride before, she tells me. |
miapearl Posted May 17, 2012, 4:22 pm |
On the way home, we stopped off to find a GeoCache.
Puffin Island and Anglesey can be seen from here. If the sun wasn't over there, we may have been able to see the lighthouse. We'd better catch up with my host's husband and son; they are already round the corner we found the cache. My host's son wants a bouncy ball. View towards Conwy and Llandudno |
miapearl Posted May 18, 2012, 4:33 pm |
Hi Mum,
A package arrived today, let's see what is inside... It is a ToyVoyager called Twixx |
miapearl Posted May 30, 2012, 4:13 pm |
Hello Mum,
This is going to be a long update with many photos! Today, we went to Portmeirion, an italianette village used in the 1960s cult TV series, The Prisoner. The village was designed by Clough Ellis, and most of the buildings have Grade II listed status. This is the Gate House. This is part of the Cliff House. This is a mural inside the Gate House arch, painted by Hans Nathan Feibusch from Germany. We descended down some steps by the Gate House. That's the Hotel on the beach. We are inside the grotto. A look along the coast. There's the hotel again, and the Observatory Tower. A view from the shore up to the village. Admiral Nelson! A view next to the Observatory Tower. We walked back via the woodland trail, coming across a stump with tuppence pieces in it. It looks quite pretty! This is the Lighthouse A pond and the Mermaid. There's the Bell Tower. The Bristole Colonnade, and The Pantheon (the Green Dome, in The Prisoner where Number 2 could often be found). This is the Piazza, with the building at the end called The Gloriette. Another view of the Bristol Colonnade. The Bell Tower again. The statue is under Number 6's house. Another statue. View from near the Pantheon, of the Bell Tower and other buildings. St Peter is on the balcony of the Toll House. The Pantheon is up there. The Colonnade again. And now it is time to go home. |
miapearl Posted May 30, 2012, 7:38 pm |
Hello Mum,
Winter bear arrived and to celebrate it, we are watching The Prisoner. The first episode is the arrival of Number 6 to The Village (aka Portmeirion where the other visitors went last weekend). Number 6 has just looked out of his window. There he is. An aerial view of the green dome Another aerial view. Rover in The Piazza. Another aerial view. |
miapearl Posted Jun 1, 2012, 11:36 am |
Hi Mum,
Today, we went to The Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth. First, we rode in the train up the cliff to the top. This is a comparison of carbon dioxide emissions. A pond with the frog Lettuces A dolls house with electrical gadgets. This display allows you to see how much energy is wasted by leaving things on, or on standby. They haven't heard of ToyVoyagers! A little garden with things growing in sinks and toilet bowls. Solar panel, we can position it... and increase the amount of light hitting the panel. We are in the polytunnel. They have some grape vines. They also have flowers and other plants. Herbs! Rosemary. MuhKuh is in the mint. There is a solar panel roof. There is a course currently for people wanting to know more about solar panels. A mole! and its tunnel. Comparing different energy and power. Bee hive! Anatomy of a bee! Mason bees. Honey bees. Dancing bees (waggle dance). The Queen Bee lays eggs in a wax cell. A wind powered seat. A metal plate, painted dark, insulation behind, and then covered in glass. A water pump sprinkling water into the large pond. Blades for a wind turbine get attached to this thing. Now it is time to go. |
miapearl Posted Jun 1, 2012, 12:37 pm |
Hi Mum,
As it was a nice evening, we stopped off to cross a bridge to Barmouth. We shall follow those people. There isn't another bridge for miles for the cars to cross. This foot/rail bridge spans an estuary. That's the river Mawddach. We crossed the bridge, it was rather too windy to stop for photos on it.. |
miapearl Posted Jun 1, 2012, 12:37 pm |
Yesterday was a long day so today, I am going to rest. |
miapearl Posted Jun 1, 2012, 12:39 pm |
Lizzy
Hi Mum, Today we went GeoCaching along the North Wales Coast. There is a GeoCache near this small church and it has a well. This is a very small church. But it has stained glass windows. It really isn't very big! Then, we went along the coast and found one here! |
miapearl Posted Jun 1, 2012, 12:40 pm |
My host tells me that the Olympic Torch is coming to the area, and said we might be lucky enough to see it! |
miapearl Posted Jun 1, 2012, 12:41 pm |
Hi Mum,
The Torch is coming, the Olympic Flame is coming. There's a procession first With the corporate sponsors getting us in the mood to see the Torch any minute now... More police on motorbikes. There it is, trust my host to have it out of focus! There it goes, can you see the flame? |
miapearl Posted Jun 1, 2012, 12:42 pm |
Hi Mum,
We have another chance to see the Flame. Should be here any minute now. Looks camoflaged in the "fold" of the building. Can see the Flame better. And there it goes. |
miapearl Posted Jun 25, 2012, 3:50 pm |
Today, we went to see a castle.
This is Beeston Castle, in Cheshire. we are resting on the outer bailey, or wall, looking across the Cheshire countryside. A view along the wall And a view up the hill to the castle. I made it up the hill, and am now in the castle The castle was partially demolished in the Civil War. A good view all around (weather permitting). The castle was built on sandstone rock, in the 13th century. |
miapearl Posted Jun 27, 2012, 10:56 am |
Today, we've come to Anderton Boat Lift.
This is the top of the boat lift. That's what it looks like from the side. We are on a boat trip. Taking a brief tour of the River Weaver Navigation system. Pleasant cruise! Then we got to go on the boat lift. We are coming off the lift and cruising onto the canal. Then, we had another look at the boat lift. And tried the maze made from counterweights. And here we all are at the centre of the maze. |
miapearl Posted Jun 28, 2012, 5:48 pm |
We are in Llandudno today because last week, after visiting the Anderton Boat Lift, we stopped off at the theatre in Llandudno, for my host's son and husband to see a show. My host left a bag there, and only discovered it was missing yesterday.
It was a sunny day and we had a little rest on the promenade outside the theatre, after she got her bag back. The sea looks calm. |
miapearl Posted Jun 28, 2012, 6:58 pm |
We are in Porthmadog to ride the Welsh Highland Railway.
We are on the train, just leaving the station. The engine pulls us out of the station, but then has to switch ends to pull us in another direction. Porthmadog has an estuary, with a tidal island. And inland, are some hills and mountains of Snowdonia in the distance. We are going across the Cob, built to cross the estuary. This is the River Glaslyn. A hill. Moel Hebog, from Beddgelert station We are moving again. And on we go. Stopped at Rhyd Ddu. Up yonder is Snowdon. And it isn't hidden in cloud. We have stopped off in Rhyd Ddu. We can take a look at the engine. Rhyd Ddu is the start of one path up Snowdon. And on we go. We are approaching another station. That engine is called Caernarfon Castle. |
miapearl Posted Jun 28, 2012, 7:22 pm |
We have arrived back in Caernarfon
There's Caernarfon Castle. |
miapearl Posted Jul 27, 2012, 11:01 pm |
We've been busy
Shelling peas. And filled a bag with empty pea pods. |
miapearl Posted Jul 29, 2012, 7:46 pm |
It has been raining but it has stopped.
These swans came to meet us. On Padarn Lake. |
miapearl Posted Jul 29, 2012, 7:49 pm |
We've come out to Manchester in England to visit a museum.
This is an old steam engine called Planet. Various engines are in this museum. This is a model of an engine a set up at ICI Part of the museum is based in a train shed, and there are train engines and carriages. In another building of the museum, equipment from a laboratory at Daresbury, used in various experiments. People from the lab won a Nobel Prize. There was a hands on science section. We can investigate Magnetic Fields. Do you see the difference? This is a picture of James Prescott Joule, who was the first person to pove that heat is a form of energy. There's a picture of Joule with Dalton. Instruments. Manchester was home to the textile industry. Circular knitting machine. Some fabric printing blocks. We caught a cotton demonstration. Here, the fibres are separated and drawn together to make a "thingy". Then they are smoothed out again and combined with other strands to make it stronger. The strands are smoothed out again and combined with other strands to make it stronger still, and then wound onto a bobbin. The thread is drawn out, and then twisted before rolled onto another bobbin. Small children would clear out the debris as the machine moves back... A dangerous job... Now it is time for weaving to make the cloth. This is the Pegasus computer, built by Ferranti. Air samplers to measure radiation. Here we are measuring radiation. Next, we went to another building housing the aviation section. Boldly going where no unicorn has gone before. |
miapearl Posted Aug 1, 2012, 1:14 pm |
Today, we popped to the allotment
These currant bushes will have fruit soon ready for harvest. My host is growing a small patch of wheat. Potatoes Yummy raspberries, red and yellow Do you see the goldfish in the pond? There is more than one fish. |
miapearl Posted Aug 1, 2012, 2:52 pm |
After the allotment, as it was a nice day, we went to Portmeirion, second time for me.
This is the type of chair Number Two sat in. The Bristol Colonnade. Nice and cool in the shade, looking across the gardens. A pond with waterlilies. We didn't visit this part last time. Pretty flowers. The tide is out. The Lighthouse. Admiral Nelson. The Observatory Tower. Looking up to the village. Ahoy there! The Bell Tower. The Piazza. The Bristol Colonnade again. The Toll House The Round House is where Number Six "lived" The painted ceiling of one of the arches. |
miapearl Posted Aug 1, 2012, 4:09 pm |
Today, was another nice day so we went out to Colwyn Bay's Mountain Zoo
These meerkats are fascinating to watch. There's a bear... A gibbon.. a sleepy tiger... a rhea bird... A penguin... Flamingoes... |
miapearl Posted Aug 16, 2012, 5:37 pm |
We've come to stay at my host's mum's for the weekend and have come out to the local Maize in Maze field.
The weather has been rather wet so the corn hasn't grown as high as the farmers would have liked. My host's son is taller than the maize. Hidden around the maze are boards with information about the Olympics. There is a letter on each board and when arranged, they form a word. My host has obscured the letter. The Olympic Torch. Is it this way? 43 events at the 1896 Athens games.. Sir Chris Hoy, how many cycling medals has he won? Mary King competed at this year's Games. Rain clouds perhaps? Yes, rain clouds, with lightning and thunder and heavy rain... We just made it under the tent. It is also windy... |
miapearl Posted Aug 17, 2012, 2:10 pm |
On the way back to Wales, we stopped off at Snibston Discovery Centre in Leicestershire.
Telephones! Plasma Ball, this is fun. My host's one had broken so we played with this one for a while. Games and toys.. My host said she had one of these computer things to connect to the tv, play sport games including a tennis game (~Pong). Is this right? Buses. A shiny red engine. This area had coal mines. An old fire engine. A vertical steam engine |
miapearl Posted Aug 17, 2012, 2:18 pm |
Today, we visited Stone Science on the Isle of Anglesey.
They have some fossils And more fossils This is a coral. Sulphur crystals. Pretty gemstones, including rose quartz, citrine, opals. Isn't that pretty. Ammonites. Even more fossils. Desert Rose.. Various metal ores. The peacock ore looks pretty. Calcites, haematite, .... Pretty |
miapearl Posted Aug 17, 2012, 2:32 pm |
Today, we came to Chester, just across the border into England to wander around the shops..
This is the Eastgate Clock. Chester is a historic city, with many Jacobean half-timbered style buildings, many have listed building status. There is a walkway above the ground floor shops. And Chester is quite close to Liverpool... |
miapearl Posted Aug 17, 2012, 3:05 pm |
We are now up in Yorkshire so my host's husband can take her son caving for the first time.
This system is called Alum Pot, and this part is the Long Churn There they go They have hard hats on I could have gone, but the caving shop in Ingleton didn't have any helmets for hire to fit me. |
miapearl Posted Aug 17, 2012, 3:19 pm |

|
miapearl Posted Sep 10, 2012, 6:20 pm |

This butterfly is having a drink. A Great Mormon. A White Tree Nymph. I'm not sure what butterfly this is. Cocoons for the Atlas Moth. Can we play Eye-spy? This butterfly didn't want to open up. Fruits are provided for the butterflies, as well as various flowering plants. A caterpillar. |

We have come on holiday!
This is Middlesborough's Transporter Bridge. We were too late to go on it last night. However, we've come back today and are allowed to go on this. We are getting ready to leave... The journey across was quick and the deck had already returned to the other side. It is coming back again. Nearly there. We'd better get back so we can make the return trip. On the way back across.. Near the bridge is a museum, but we didn't take any photographs. We came back out to see the deck coming back. It has gone back across the river. This is a good spot to see the bridge in action. It is going back over the water. |
miapearl Posted Sep 28, 2012, 9:10 pm |
We have arrived in Whitby. Our first stop is the Dracula Museum. It is a bit spooky but I am not scared. I shall be glad to get out of this museum! Next, we watched a replica of HMS Endeavour (the original sailed under Captain Cook) take a group out for a little trip. And then we went to the lifeboat museum. Due to bad sea and wind conditions, the lifeboat couldn't launch but was hauled overland 6 miles to Robin Hood's Bay and was launched from there. The rescue was eventually successful. Major storm in the 19th century with 4 successful rescues but tragedy struck on a fifth rescue... Whitby also has an Abbey on the other side of the river and up the hill. Having a go at "copying" a manuscript! We walked around the abbey before it started to rain. |
miapearl Posted Oct 10, 2012, 11:39 am |
We went to Scarborough on our way home.
We stopped off at the Sea Life centre. These fish didn't stop though! More fish. Flat fish Skate? and a shark. These fish don't really pose for the camera. It is rather relaxing watching these fish. Different ones came to have a look at us. And everyone else visiting! Time to see other fish. Corals and coral fish. A spiky looking fish. Snake-like fish. Jellyfish. Nautilus Giant octopus on the glass. Seals A nice day for a swim. Starfish. Anemones and a hermit crab. Shark won't keep still for photos! A shark having a rest. Lazy fish! We are in the tunnel going through the aquarium. Perhaps this is a zebra fish? Seahorse. |

Hi Mum,
Today, we went to the site of an old Roman fort complex. We are still in Snowdonia. The area now is farmland for sheep. The lake in the background is Llyn Trawsfynydd. This is a view from the motte, there's the lake again, and the decommissioned nuclear power station. The lake again. |
miapearl Posted Oct 25, 2012, 12:11 pm |
Hi Mum,
After visiting Tomen Y Mur, there was enough time to come to Llyn Trawsfynydd. There's a bridge across the lake. Wow, look at the lake's surface, so calm and good for reflection. I think we can walk across it. Yep, we can walk across. My host's son and husband are already half-way across. Can you make out the decommissioned nuclear power station over there? |
miapearl Posted Oct 25, 2012, 12:23 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today started out a sunny day so we came out on the buses. However, when we got to our destination, it was raining. This is a gold painted post box. This was painted gold as we are in the Taekwondo Olympic Gold winner's, Jade Jones, town. It is still raining.... We missed the bus so came back to look at the postbox again, and it had stopped raining. We caught the next bus. The windscreen still has raindrops. Look how much rain had fallen. The bus can't make it through that! |
miapearl Posted Oct 25, 2012, 12:40 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today is a nice day so we came out for a walk. These are puffball fungi These are the dunes at Aberffraw. A pretty yellow flower for you Mum. And another pretty flower. Is that purple tinge the same colour as my mane? More fungi, these funny black clubs... More pretty flowers.... growing in the sand. There's the sea and beach. Snowdonia mountains on the mainland. Miss you Mum. Some more fungi on the way back from the beach. More fungi, different one again. |
miapearl Posted Nov 15, 2012, 6:51 pm |

miapearl Posted Nov 15, 2012, 7:03 pm |
Finally! Fresh air... What is that? Looks a bit like an onion.
Ah, the name of the island is Ailsa Craig. The name is also the name of an onion! |
miapearl Posted Nov 15, 2012, 7:40 pm |
It looks like we'll be staying by this beach in a caravan.
Although given the weather, I doubt if we'll be appreciating it to its full extend. In the background is the Isle of Arran. Perhaps we'll be able to visit Arran by ferry. |
miapearl Posted Nov 16, 2012, 9:20 pm |
Hi Mum,
Today, we have come to Glasgow. And inside to a science centre overlooking the River Clyde. Look, there are three different sized squares around a right-angled triangle. There are two squares of liquid... And they can fill the big square. This exhibit has different metals for two electrodes. This combination looks great. This combination is good but not as great as the previous go. But this is not very good at all. A plasma ball A figure of eight knot, I hope. Panels made from different recycled plastics - wellies, mobile phone covers, bottles, yogurt pots, plastic bags... This is an exhibit about the first heart transplant. The heart is being delivered. Surgeons operate.. And all became well. Is that the time already? Where did the time go? It has just changed again. Pretty pattern Finished pattern The Mind Works area of the museum. Giant kaleidoscope. "Curiouser and curiouser!" cried Alice. The Ouchi Illusions. My host was telling me she had received a Postcrossing postcard with an Ouchi Illusion. Ouch! A Peripheral Drift snakes illusion. My eyes have gone funny... Time to go.... the museum is closed. BBC Scotland. We were inside that |
miapearl Posted Nov 16, 2012, 9:21 pm |
Arrived back at the caravan after a good day out. |
miapearl Posted Nov 22, 2012, 10:12 am |
Hi Mum,
Dearest host.... is that the ferry we wanted to catch?! But we caught the next one. Bye bye Scottish mainland. The sea is calm. There's a lighthouse on the mainland over there. Look how far we've come. I think we are nearly there, wherever that is. |
miapearl Posted Nov 22, 2012, 12:45 pm |
We have arrived on the Isle of Bute.
This is Rothesay castle. It has a moat. Look! Unicorns! Some King James... Rothesay, and the mainland in the distance. Some renovation is being done to make the castle safer. The Norwegians held this island for centuries. The tower was built to improve defences and provide accomodation for the high steward... The Norwegian flag is on the right. A couple of views on the outside of the castle. This is the prison, in a pit below. I came down that ladder. That's the ladder to go down to the prison. This is the ferry ticket. Waiting to sail back to the mainland. It is getting dark too. |
miapearl Posted Nov 29, 2012, 4:21 pm |
Arrived back at the caravan after a good day out. |
miapearl Posted Nov 29, 2012, 4:43 pm |
We are on another boat
We are going to sail soon. This time, we came over with the car. It is wet and miserable out there. Autumn has arrived. We are driving around the island. This is Arran. There is sunshine, but those clouds spell rain. I think that island is uninhabited. It has a lighthouse. This is a whisky distillery. It is quite a new one. Pretty scenery, even in the rain. Water draining from the hills. More rain. There's the ferry. We'll catch the next one. This is Brodick harbour We have a boarding card. It is getting dark out there as we sail back. Let's get back into the warm... |
miapearl Posted Dec 11, 2012, 9:28 pm |

miapearl Posted Dec 11, 2012, 9:31 pm |
Today, we visited another castle.
First, we looked at a model of what the hillfort or dun probably looked like in 500AD This is a model of the second castle built in the 13th century but was possibly destroyed by Robert Bruce And this is the third castle on the site. We went for a look around, but the weather was a bit wet. The staff were preparing for a Halloween do later that day. The interior might have looked like this. |
miapearl Posted Dec 11, 2012, 10:55 pm |

miapearl Posted Dec 11, 2012, 10:56 pm |
We have come back into Glasgow
This time, to a transport museum. This is an Argyll Model 6 motor car. A tram from the 1950s. The Dalmarnock tram, pulled by horses. A cart in the street. An underground train. A pub! A Kallista car. A horse pulling a wagon full of scotch kegs! Trains in here too! And a wall of cars. What is that? On a tram. Motorbikes. On a tube. Boats Glasgow was an important trade centre. Looking over to the wall of cars. A big boat. A post office motorbike It is quite a big museum. We came in at that entrance down there. A Daihatsu van decorated for the 1997 Salaam festival A couple of engines. Highland Railway 103! Glen Douglas loco. Model engines A motorbike, for some reason, is on its side. Rather old vehicles. The museum lies on the River Clyde. This is a view down river. Back inside, time for another quick look around. The motorbike wall. Another nice car. |

Final full day in Scotland...
We are on another boat! This time, we are leaving Largs. It is only a small boat. It wasn't very full. I think we are nearly there... Do you see that painted face on the rock? That is Millport, the only town on the Isle of Cumbrae A memorial. A view from the high point on Cumbrae. A crocodile! |

Snow is on the hills. Brr! It is cold. This is the HQ for the Snowdon Mountain Railway. No trains run in the off-season. The Snowdon Mountain Railway is a Rack and Pinion railway. This is the main street. All looks OK but... This time last week, it was flooded. A very rare event for this village. The clean up operation is still in progress. |

Beautiful but chilly. |
miapearl Posted Feb 8, 2013, 2:13 pm |
It was time to leave Lincolnshire and head back to Wales, but first, we stopped off in the National Media Museum in Bradford.
This is a What-the-Butler-saw machine. You put your money in, look into the thing and turn the handle to change the pictures seen. If the handle is turned fast enough, it looks like a motion picture. Old camera. On another floor of the museum, was the television section. Doctor Who started in 1963 On this timeline are some Teletubbies. Zippy and George from Rainbow HELP! It is a Dalek. It wants to exterminate. Some old tv gear An old computer game Space invaders. Commercial aliens! The Wombles Thaumatrope Animations. |

My host's character was Leoric Of The Book.. She died, but one of the other players revived her. And it was her character who killed the baddie and won the game Next, we played The Resistance, a game where you are either a resistance member or a spy. My host was a spy in all the games of this we played (at least half a dozen)! |
