Dear Mum
Goodness, that was a long journey. I was stuck at customs but now I've finally arrived in Heidelberg and was so happy when my envelope was opened and I could breathe fresh air again. I showed nuriayasmin the cards and coin I had brought with me and she was absolutely delighted. Then some of the other TV's who are staying here came to say hello. The pig on the left is Sooky, the reindeer on the right is Rendolph and the cute little mice are DuDette and DuDu who are also from the USA. Then I met Sammy, nuriayasmin's cat. He's very friendly and thought I smell very goodl. The weather here is still all right but they say it will get colder next week. Talk to you soon. Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
Today I strolled along the river Neckar and had a look at the Old Bridge which Heidelberg is famous for. The castle is situated over the bridge in the mountains but because of the fog up there, you can't see much of it on the photo. However, I may climb up to the castle next week, depending on the weather, of course. Unfortunately it has become quite cold here now. Love you very much, Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
Today I'd like to tell you how I spent my day at home with nuriayasmin and the other TV's. First I had a piece of cake and a cup of hot chocolate for breakfast. Then we TV's decided to do something useful and learn some bits of an additional foreign languages. Fortunately nuriayasmin is quite a language nerd and gave us all her textooks and grammars for Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Czech, Slovak, Russian, Norwegian and Japanese. I chose Italian which sounds really great and isn't difficult to learn. Here are some useful sentences I learnt. My name is Ohkwari: Mi chiamo Ohkwari. I'm American: Sono americana. I like travelling: Mi piace viaggare How are you? Come stai? I'm very well: Sto benissima. I had a look at the new cat Shelley who has been living here since last week. She was abandoned and spent two months at the animal shelter. She's 14 years old like Sammy but looks older and also moves much slower. And she's really tiny compared to Sammy. I had a look out of the window. The trees have almost no leaves anymore and it looked very grey. It's also very cold today. Then there were some household tasks to do. I helped getting the clean clothes out of the washing machine. I had Chinese noodles and orange juice for lunch. In the afternoon all TV's gathered around the Swedish cookies nuriayasmin had bought for us and told each other about our journeys and dreams of journeys to come. I also had a big cup of hot tea.. Then we helped nuriayasmin to write some postcrossing cards. Each of us was allowed to write one card. Mine went to Russia. Last not least I did some ironing which was definitively the least enjoyable task today. And finally I sat down in front of the laptop and updated my travelog. Hope you and the pets are doing fine. I enjoy my time here in Germany but also miss you a little. Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
Today a bunch of ToyVoyagers invaded Heidelberg Castle. There are stairs which lead to the castle which is situated in the mountains over the city and we climbed them - about 400 I guess. Afterwards we needed to take a rest and took the chance for a group photo. I had a look down to the city. It's a bit foggy up here as always during the last two or three weeks. The castle of Heidelberg was built in the 13th century. For a while there were two castles, one situated a bit higher than the remains of the current one. During the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) the castle was attacked and partly destroyed for the first time. In 1692 the castle was destroyed by the French and although basic repairs were made, the castle has basically remained a ruin since then. In the early 19th century a French count became interested in the castle and served as a voluntary castle warden. Between 1897 and 1900 the castle was partly reconstructed and became one of Germany's main tourist attractions. Another look to the city centre, the Old Bridge and the river Neckar. Bye, Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
I went to Speyer today. It's a small town not too far away from here. It took us about 45 minutes by train to get there. Speyer used to be an important city in the Middle Ages. Speyer Cathedral was built between 1030 and 1080 by the Salic Emperors and designed as their last resting place. 8 German emperors and kings, 4 queens and several bishops were buried in the cathedral's Crypt between 1039 and 1309. Since 1981 the cathedral has been a UNESCO world heritage site. This is the front of the Cathedral: This is the back part of it where the Crypt is situated. After visiting the Cathedral we walked through its park to the Sea Life Aquarium. It wasn't allowed to use flash inside the aquarium so taking photos resulted to be extremely difficult and they didn't turn out well. Speyer is situated at Germany's biggest river Rhine. Here's a port for small boats. We took a walk along the Rhine, watched some big freight ships and then returned back to town from where we took a bus to the train station. It was a great day and not even very cold. Keep fine, Ohkwari |

Advent time has started and it's common here to put a wreath with candles on the table. Children often get Advent calendars which have 24 doors with some candie hidden behind each of it. We were were given a plate full of cookies, mandarines and chocolate. Next week DuDette, DuDu, Nook and Willy Olson will leave but we're expecting some new TV's. Take care, Ohkwari |

You haven't heard from me for quite a while and I'm very sorry about that. The weather has become quite grey and rainy here and my host has become very lazy and stayed home most of the time she didn't have to work. Today I accompanied her to town and we wanted to take some pictures. However, it started to pour again and so I preferred to stay in my host's big warm bag. However, here's a photo of me in front of the gate which leads to the Old Bridge. Hope you're doing fine. Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
How are you doing? Hope you had a good start into 2012. I'm really sorry that I haven't written for so long. However, I'm doing fine, we've just all been very lazy here. Nuriayasmin told me that you're looking for another host for me so I'm already curious which my next destination will be. Today I said good-bye to Claire Squirrel. After spending a couple of weeks at home she's now travelling to another German host. The cute rat next to me is Remy. He spent the month of January with us and will return home next week. I also visited the rabbits in their cage today. Krümel was very curious and tried to find out if I'm tasty. I had to remind him that he's a vegetarian and then he left me alone. Unfortunately Lola has been ill for a week. She caught a bad cold and is still very weak. Nuriayasmin has to feed her three times a day and she still needs medicaments. Hope she will get well soon. The temperatures have fallen below 0°C and the weather forecasts says it's going to become even colder. No snow though as it's very dry. I promise that you won't have to wait for my next travelog entry for so long again. Keep fine. Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
A new TV has arrived today. When nuriayasmin gave us the envelope, we were all very curious and gathered around it. Finally Kazumi took some scissors and cut the envelope open. A lot of sweets fell out of the envelope and Remy looked as if he wanted to eat them all at once. There was also a note which I read to the others. Then we heard some sounds from inside the envelope and suddenly a cute little green rabbit appeared. He looked so frightened that I just had to take him into my arms and cuddle him. I'm sure we're going to have a nice time with him once he has grown accustomed to us. It's his first journey after all. Keep fine, Ohkwari |

Hi Mum
How are you doing? No more snow here and the temperatures have risen a little. The sun was shining, too so it was a perfect day to take a walk. Some German rivers are almost completely frozen but the river Neckar has only some ice on the river banks which wasn't thick enough to walk on it. It nevertheless looked impressive. A bit further up the river there was practically no more ice and Králi, Kazumi and I took a rest to enjoy the sun. A small nature reserve is situated directly at the river and so we walked about half an hour through the woods. We passed this small creek which was completely frozen on the surface but we could hear the water running under the ice. And this picture looks a lot like spring, doesn't it? Finally we arrived at the monastery of Neuburg which was built in the early 12th century. There's a small shop where wine and fruits from the monastery's estates are sold. Here are some pictures: Hope you like my pics. We had a great time. Bye until next time. Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
This afternoon Coco Presley, Kazumi, Králi and I went to a small nature reserve in Ludwigshafen. We took a bus, a train and another bus to get there. We saw quite a few deers but they didn't come close enough to take a picture of them and me. But I said hello to this cute horse who was quite surprised when it heard that I have travelled all the way from California. I also saw these boars who had very cute babies. Here I'm sitting on a lake which was completely frozen and covered by snow. More deers in the background which can hardly been seen, I'm afraid. Before we returned home we had a rest in the sun. Keep fine, Ohkwari |

Dear Mum
I'm so excited because nuriayasmin told me that I'm travelling to France tomorrow. Thank you very much for arranging this for me. Today the weather was absolutely beautiful and so I went to Neckarsteinach, a small town near Heidelberg which was founded in the 12th century. It's called the city of the four castles because the ruins of four castles from the Middle Ages are situated in the mountains close to the city. One of the castles is owned privately and still inhabited, the others are just ruins and were abandoned 200 - 300 years ago. So we took a walk along the river Neckar, had a look at the castles and walked in the forest. It was really great. Keep fine, Ohkwari |

Dear mum,
I have just arrived to my host. The journey was not too long so I am quite fresh. Will update some photos soon. Love Ohkwari |
Krtecek Posted Mar 10, 2012, 6:09 pm |
Dear mum,
today we went for a first sightseeing trip. But first of all I got my morning coffee to wake me up. I am with my host at a classroom as she is studying in Paris. Imagine, they have coffee machines for espresso in their classrooms. Love O. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 10, 2012, 6:12 pm |
It was a nice day so we decided to take a short walk around Ile de la Cité, which is one of two main islands of Paris and a home of a famous Notre Dame cathedral.
It is also an area of parks and relax areas (as well as souvenir shops). I especially liked the swing where I spent a part of the sunny afternoon. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 10, 2012, 6:15 pm |
Then we continued to visit the Notre Dame cathedral. It is the main church in Paris and the seat of the archbishop. Its also famous for the story of Quasimodo and Esmeralda and the traces of their love are all over the place. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 10, 2012, 6:18 pm |
Finally, my host showed me this very interesting bridge that leads to the cathedral. Its the bridge of love. Couples of all ages place a lock on the bridge as a proof of their long-lasting love. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 10, 2012, 6:32 pm |
Dear mum,
today we went on a bicycle trip to the Montmartre district. The bicycles here are shared. It is a services of the city, for less than 2 euros a day you can get a bicycle near your house and return it back once you reach your final destination. Its all self-service and the stations are every 300 metres. O. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 10, 2012, 6:37 pm |
And on our bicycle we arrived to the Sacre Coeur cathedral that is on the hill of Montmartre. It is the only real hill in Paris, otherwise its all quite flat. The cathedral is built of white stone and it shines into the distance.
Then we walked towards Abesses which is one of the deepest metro stations in Paris (36 metres) and there are elevators and stairs. Unfortunately the elevators are almost always out of order. Here we met a nice lady, that liked me very much and wanted to take a picture with me. Moreover, our coats matched. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 10, 2012, 6:39 pm |
We finished our bicycle trip in front of the most famous cabaret in the world - Le moulin rouge. It was already dark and people were queing to get in to see the show. I wonder what it might be like. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 15, 2012, 2:09 pm |
Dear mum,
the spring has arrived to Paris. It is over 20 degrees (Celsius) and the sun is shinning. My host is currently taking her exams so she spends her days studying. As it was so nice, we decided to go studying to the Garden of Luxembourg which is a centre of the Latin District an area with many universities and the famous La Sorbonne. So as we were in this area we went to visit the Pantheon. It is a beautiful church on a top of a hill (it was a hassle to get there on a bike) where many famous Frenchmen are buried. In front of Pantheon, students were just having lunch and studying on the sun. Afterwards we moved to the garden of Luxembourg with is around the Luxembourg Palace the seat of the Senate. There also were many students and also runners who were doing their exercises. I was lazy to move so my host was transporting me in her bag. How nice. Love, O. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 21, 2012, 8:11 pm |
Dear mum,
unfortunately my host is in the middle of exams and she doesnt go out much (so no sightseeing ). Too keep me busy I decided to start the studies as well and to keep my host some company. As a reward for my hard work my host promised to take me for a tour of Paris during the weekend and as a bonus to show me also other villages around Paris. Love, O. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 27, 2012, 7:52 pm |
Dear mum,
finally I got to see some parts of Paris. My host took me to visit Montmartre again but this time it was during a lovely sunny day. I saw the beatiful white Sacre Coeur Basilique and from the top of the hill )the only one in Paris) I could enjoy the view of the city. Tomorrow, we will go to the Eiffel tower O. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 27, 2012, 7:56 pm |
Dear mum,
the day has finally arrived and I got to climb the Eiffel Tower. It was very very tall and I could see the entire city and also the suburbs and even further away. I also took many pictures. It was excellent. After the climb (we used the stairs as there were too many people waiting for the lifts) I took a rest and looked at the tower from a distance. O. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 27, 2012, 8:10 pm |
Afterwards we went to see the famous Pyramide of Louvre. Louvre is a historical castle of French kings and one of the worlds largerst art galleries.
In the middle of the historical courtyard the glass pyramide was built and it serves as the main entrance. At the beginning it was largerly criticised but now it is one of the most popular sights of Paris and it gives the place a glimpse of modern touch. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 27, 2012, 8:14 pm |
And the sightseeing was finished by the famous Fountain St.Michel built in the 19th century as a part of a great reconstruction of Paris. |
Krtecek Posted Mar 27, 2012, 8:19 pm |
Dear mum,
today we decided to explore a little bit around Paris and we took a train to visit the castle of Fontainbleu. First of all we walked through the parc where we found a lovely spring. My new friend Krtecek and I took a picture there. Then we arrived at the castle and decided to do a small picknick. We had all kind of good food and a fabulous view of the castle helped the appetite... |
Krtecek Posted Mar 27, 2012, 8:23 pm |
...and then we continued to visit the castle. It is the largest castle I have seen so far and there is a huge garden with artificial lakes, ponds and fountains. There are also geese and ducks.
|
Krtecek Posted Mar 27, 2012, 8:26 pm |
Dear mum,
today we went to see the medieval city of Provins - a UNESCO protected world heritage site. It is a small town with monumental medieval remains such as the ramparts, watchout tower and a cathedral. I enjoyed the visit. Will write more soon O. |
Krtecek Posted Apr 7, 2012, 6:21 pm |
Dear mum,
today we wanted to take advantage of the supposedly last warm day and went for a trip to the parc Butte Chaumont which is not far from my hosts home. It is a large parc built in the 19th century with a pavilion on top of a rock. There were many people, children, ice-cream and even a horse carriage. I told myself that I would have the opportunity to complete my life mission and ride a real horse. I asked the lady who owned the horse if I could ride it a little and take a picture and she said NO (in a very mean way). I was so upset. Very upset. My host said she would find me a policeman on a horse to ride it. She said they are usually more friendly. |
Krtecek Posted Apr 8, 2012, 8:42 pm |
Today me and other toyvoyagers decided to visit the Basilique of Saint Denis a jewel of a gothic architecture and the burial place of French kings and queens.
We had a meeting with the friends near the bassin de la villette. There was a lovely fountain and a funny cow (part of the cowparade). We though it would be funny to take some pictures there |
Krtecek Posted Apr 8, 2012, 8:43 pm |
As we were trying to reach the basilique we found a lovely parc with many tulips.
Once we reached the basilique we saw the tombs but we didn´it it consider appropriate to take pictures in the interior. But it was a real jewel. |
Krtecek Posted Apr 16, 2012, 8:50 pm |
As it is the Easter monday we decided to visit a lovely castle of Breteuil where we wanted to participate in the Egg hunt. Unfortunaly it was raining so we only took a few pictures and visited the castle. But it was cool. It is a castle of the fairy tales of M.Perraut and we saw all the princes and princesses in the castle.
|
Krtecek Posted Apr 16, 2012, 8:52 pm |
It´s Friday 13th but it is our lucky day. We have finally received our Easter package from the Czech republic. We were so unpatient to see what was inside - and there was so many goodies...mnam |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:30 pm |
After a short flight we landed in Prague. As a group trip we were all very happy to spend some time together and explore the beautiful city. On our first day we admired the Dancing house. Originally named Fred and Ginger (after Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers – the house resembles a pair of dancers) the house stands out among the Baroque, Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings for which Prague is famous. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:31 pm |
Next we saw the panorama of Prague castle a majestic set of palaces constructed over 1000 years in all kinds of architectural styles. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:31 pm |
Instead of going to the castle we continued to the Old Town square famous for an Astronomical clock that was first installed in 1410, making it the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working. A legend says that the clockmaker Hanuš was blinded on the order of the Prague Councillors so that he could not repeat his work in another town; in turn, he broke down the clock, and no one was able to repair it for the next hundred years. According to local legend the city will suffer if the clock is neglected and its good operation is placed in jeopardy. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:32 pm |
And then we rode a horse. Finally I completed my life mission. And whats more, I had fun. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:34 pm |
Then we saw the townhall bulit in the Art Nouveau style with a statue of a Dark Knight (not the one from Batman) in the corner. Another Prague legend says that it was a foreign knight who came to Prague with his suite and wanted to marry one of Czech girls. The girls refused his love and was interested only in Czech young men. As a hot blooded foreigner he killed her with his sword. Before the girl died she cursed the foreign knight to remain a metal statue for thousand years until an innocent girl does not change him back by a kiss. Since the time has not yet come, the black knight is still waiting in the corner of the town hall. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:34 pm |
To avoid the tourists we took a shortcut through Clementinum which is a national library founded in 1781 on a place of a former monastery and a university. There is also a meteorological observatory and the weather recording there started in 1775 and provides thus a comparison of weather development over more than 200 years. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:35 pm |
After quite and exhaustive walk we have finally reached the Charles Bridge a symbol of Prague and its very valuable monument. The beginning of its construction was carefully planned by royal alchymists who predicted that the most favorable would be to lay the corner stone on 1357 9th July at 5:31 a.m. (divine sequence of odd numbers in ascending and descending order 135797531). The bridge is 621 meters long and nearly 10 meters wide, resting on 16 arches shielded by ice guards. It is protected by three bridge towers. The Old Town bridge tower is often considered to be one of the most astonishing civil gothic-style buildings in the world. The bridge is decorated by a continuous alley of 30 statues originally erected around 1700. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:36 pm |
Our first day sightseeing was finished in Kampa a lovely area between Vltava and Devil's Stream (Čertovka), a waterway dug to power water mills. It is supposedly to be named after a sharp-tongued woman who lived in a local home called the Seven Devils. Even today we can admire a beautiful watermill from the 12th century. Kampa island i salso home to a Museum of modern art announced by massive bronze statues of babies that were sculpted by David Cerny a well known Czech artist. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:37 pm |
Next day was announced as a sunny one so we continued our tour de Prague. We walked through a parc admiring the views when suddenly we saw an Eiffel tower. We thought that it was some sort of a teleport that took us to Paris but our host told us that it was not an Eiffel tower but a look out tower on Petrin a 60 metre high steel tower built in 1891. Although it is much shorter than the Eiffel Tower, it stands atop a sizable hill, Petřín, so the top is actually at a higher altitude than that of the Eiffel Tower. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:38 pm |
We then continued to the Strahov monastery founded in 1149 The monastery is often visited because of its historical library with more than 200.000 old boks and manuscripts. There is a beautiful view of the Prague panorama that we admired as well. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:38 pm |
There are really many beautiful buildings in Prague. Another one that took our breath away was the Prague Loreta church a beautiful baroque edifice from the 17th century. It is an important place of pilgrimage and a house of a Loreta treasure an large collection of lithurgical object of innimaginable value. It i salso famous for its chime bells that are used instead of classic church bells. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:39 pm |
Finally we have reached the Prague castle whose panorama we saw yesterday from the riverside. The impressive castle founded in the 9th century is the largest medivela castle in the world with 570metres of length and 128 of width. It was a crowning place of Czech kings and it is now a seat of the Czech president and a house of Czech crown jewels. In the heart of the complex there is a St. Vitus cathedral that contains the tombs of many Czech kings and it is also the seat of the Archbishop of Prague. The chapel of St. Wenceslas a Czech patron saint contains not only his relics but also the most valuable treasure of the entire nation – the crown jewels. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:40 pm |
To také a little break from all the walking we went to the Wallenstein gardens that belong to the Wallenstein palace (a seat of the Senate). Beatiful peaceful French garden architecture was meant to rival the Prague castle and we have to admit that it must have really threaten the empreror. No wonder Wallenstein was assasinated on the order of the Emperor ion 1634. |
Krtecek Posted May 30, 2012, 8:41 pm |
Last gothic jewel of our visit – a church of St. Nicolas built in the baroque style. The green copper roof and the bell tower are distinct marks on Prague panorama. |
