What a pleasure! Sweet, cuddly and chummily Chubby Berry arrived today in Thuringia!
I jumped out of my package and saw the other TVs Winter Bear and Börnie. We had a lot of fun! But I was soooo sleepy. I decide to have an afternoon-nap in my host's bed. She is really nice to me, her name is Melli and she is a student. Oh, it is a dream! Her daughter went to Halloween from house to house and hauted a lot of people! Could you imagine that these deplorable peoble gave her sweets? And what a pity, she hates chocolate! I am a gently bear, and so I would help her to abolish the sweets |
mellialida Posted Nov 10, 2011, 6:07 pm |
Hi Dear at home!!
My host mellialida is a really lovely host! I have seen the hometown, the "Thuringian Wood" and the "University". But at the moment, my host gets sick! She had a very bad stomach flu. So, the other tv's and I decide to cook her a lovely dinner. We cut some tomato's and some mozarella (she loves it!). I red a nice bedtime story, together with the other tv's (I am such a cute ans civilly bear!). We all became very sleepy! At the weekend, we would like to visit the castle "Wartburg"! I am so excited! |
mellialida Posted Nov 14, 2011, 7:28 pm |
Hi Friends at home!
Oh, today was a foggy, cold day. I do not like these days. Winter bear told me, that this weather is its favorit one! My host mellialida and the other tvs decide to visit the Wartburg in Eisenach. This was a special wish from Börnie! But I was also really happy about it. Here are the facts: In 1999 UNESCO added Wartburg Castle to the World Heritage List as an "Outstanding Monument of the Feudal Period in Central Europe", citing its "Cultural Values of Universal Significance". The castle's foundation was laid about 1068 by the Thuringian count of Schauenburg. According to tradition, the castle got its name from Ludwig dem Springer: "Warte, Berg -- du sollst mir eine Burg werden!" But I am also sad, because börnie leave us tomorrow. We decide to have a big party for him! |
mellialida Posted Nov 15, 2011, 4:50 pm |
Hi Folks!
We mad a big suprise-party for börnie. He left us today and so we decide to have a really cool party with sweets and juice! But...have a look at the picture! |

Back at home again. I'm really happy, had a great journey and I'm really excited for my next travel. I will go to Moscow, Russia.
We have been to the Kiekeberg-Museum in the south of Hamburg. It's an outdoor museum where you see how living in the past between 1600-1960 had been. |

Hi, mom!
How happy I am that I can get out of a box and see sunlight at last! It’s real Christmas miracle as I meet New Year not in a post-office, but at home with my new friends. Look, my host gave me a chocolate-bar at once for getting warm after a long journey. A wrapper is so beautiful! I wait for the beginning of adventures in Russia! But at first - New year, right? |

Hi, mom!
It’s New Year's Eve today and I’m so happy! Me and my host will celebrate this holiday at home with her family and close friends. You know, in Russia New Year's Eve is now celebrated similarly to Christmas, just without the religious aspect of the holiday. My host has been passed her exams till 30th December, so we decide to dress up a fur-tree today! Hooray! Fur-tree toys are stored in box on the top shelf of a wardrobe. There are a lot of toys here, old and new, glass and plastic. My host told me that the oldest one - a toy glass alarm-clock, was put on a fur-tree by her great-grandmother! It is excellent tradition - to buy every year some new toys, but also to leave the old. You can feel proximity of generations. How beautiful! OK, now let’s hang up electric garlands so the fur-tree will be sparkle beautifully in the evening. Oh, I’m a little bit confused... And other garlands, we should hang up them everywhere in the house, for holiday mood! So, let’s load it on my shoulders and drag forward! Wow! Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost) and Snegurochka (Snow Maiden) have come to us for a party! I already wrote that in Russia New year has no relation to religion, therefore Ded Moroz isn't similar to Santa Claus! My host has told to me that earlier, Ded Moroz was a wicked and cruel sorcerer, ruling over frosts. According to legend, Ded Moroz liked to freeze people and kidnap children, taking them away in his gigantic sack. Parents were said to have to give him presents as a ransom in return for their children. However, under the influence of Orthodox traditions, the character of Ded Moroz was completely transformed, later adopting certain traits from Santa Claus. And the modern Snegurochka is depicted as the granddaughter and helper of Ded Moroz. But in another story, she is the daughter of Spring and Frost, and yearns for the companionship of mortal humans. She grows to like a shepherd named Lel, but her heart is unable to know love. Her mother takes pity and gives her this ability, but as soon as she falls in love, her heart warms and she melts. Oh, I see, Ded Moroz has a gift for me! Let's look what it is! It’s Christmas-tree decoration! So beautiful! Hmm, it would be nice to collect toys from all over the World, what do you think? I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Happiness, good luck, love and more sweet surprises next year! |

Hi, mom!
It’s really bad weather this weekend, rainy and grey behind a window, so we decided stay home till next weekend. And what can we do at home? Cooking, of course!! Our special Christmas dish – traditional Russian soup, solyanka! It is very simple soup, but very tasty. It isn't similar to other soups, much more hot and sour because of pickled cucumbers. Such unusual taste! First we take potato, carrots and onions. We should cut them. Look, what a remarkable grater. My fingers are far from blades because of the holder. Then we take pickled cucumbers and olives. They give to soup especial taste. Cut them… Then we fry vegetables and boil potato at the same time. Put cucumbers and fry the mix some more minutes. Finally we put everything together in a pan and cook some minutes so all products will mix up in a single dish Bon appétit! Now let's prepare a dessert. It will be tastiest cakes with a chocolate stuffing. It is prepared very quickly. We take sugar, oil, milk (my host uses soya), and flour. We mix everything in dough in one second. We put all in beautiful forms, we strew with edible ornaments or sesame, and in the middle of each cake we put a chocolate slice. We bake it in oven within 25 minutes. Mmmmm, delicious! I decided to write down this recipe in my notebook to prepare this wonderful dish at home. It is time to buy olives! |

Hi, mom!
This weekend we have visited one of the most beautiful and ancient monastery in Moscow – Andronikov monastery! There are working churches inside, so we can’t take any photo, but my host tell me that it is consecrated to the Holy Image of Saviour Not Made by Hands and it is home to Andrei Rublev Museum of Old Russian Art, named after the most famous monk of this abbey. In fact, there many buildings in this monastery are devoted to Andrey Rublev (the greatest medieval Russian painter of Orthodox icons and frescoes). Already during his lifetime some his icons were appreciated and esteemed as wonder-making. Here you can see copper monument to Andrey Rublyov working. Near the monument there is an arbor, and there you can see a copy of the most well-known Russian icon of Andrey Rublyov - the Trinity. You know something about it? Trinity depicts the three angels who visited Abraham at the oak of Mamre, but the painting is full of symbolism and often interpreted as an icon of the Holy Trinity. The monastery was established in 1357 by Metropolitan Alexis as a way of giving thanks for his survival in a storm. Its first hegumen was Saint Andronik, one of Sergii Radonezhsky's disciples. The extant four-pillared Saviour Cathedral was constructed from 1420–1427. Andrei Rublev spent the last years of his life at the monastery and was buried there. Newer and more harmonous church of Michael the Archangel (1690s) perfectly looks at my photo! And of course there there is a small belltower where it is possible to ring by a bell. Oh, it seems, all Moscow could heard it! Icons are also represented on bells, probably, they help to sound better! |

Hi, mom!
Today we have decided to take a walk across old Moscow, to look how people lived there earlier. Despite the fact that Moscow is a huge megacity where the population is more than 11,5 million persons, some areas were not built up with modern skyscrapers, and have been left the same as they were several centuries ago. Well, we begin all the same with a Stalin skyscraper (it means that have constructed it at the time of Stalin - 1952). This residential building, costs on Kotelnichesky quay. It consists of 32 floors and has height of 176 m. In a skyscraper 540 apartments are located. In modern films if want to show that the hero is rich, but has earned riches not on gamble, and occurs from dear family, he usually lives in this building. Later on our way we have saw the church of Nikolay Chudotvorets (Nicolay Miracle). It is said that it is last medieval building in Moscow. You know that in 1689 Peter the Great became the tsar in Russia. He has decided that Russia should follow Europe at all and within several years has changed everything - an economy direction, fashion, architecture, art. And this church has been constructed in 1697 under the direction of Osip Startsev. He didn't approve reforms, therefore has constructed the building in old Moscow style. And nobody after that has dared to contradict the tsar! We pass to street with a name of Alexander Solzhenitsyn which is entirely built up by buildings of 18-19 centuries. They are not inhabited, and are leased by offices of large firms. I don't know, how much it is prestigious, to work in this building, but it seems to me it is not very convenient - there can be drafts, a cold. Precisely in winter! There is a very beautiful church of Sacred Martin Ispovednik, the Pope, in this street. It has been constructed in 1806. It is said as one of the most beautiful temples in Moscow. It is well-known for a surprising event. During occupation of Moscow by Frenchmen, in 1812, when the city was grasped by the enemy, was plundered and was burned down practically entirely, this church remained untouched. It was so pleasant to Napoleon that it has given a platoon of soldiers for protection from marauders. This platoon has surrendered by a captivity of Russian armies entering into a city, left a temple in an excellent condition! Under a temple beats a spring from which priests take water for consecration. There is another beautiful house in the street of Solzhenitsyn. In my opinion, again, not so comfortable. My host told me that Solzhenitsyn was a writer , who, through his often-suppressed writings, helped to raise global awareness of the gulag, the Soviet Union's forced labor camp system. Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970. He was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1974 but returned to Russia in 1994 after the Soviet system had collapsed. It was named as “prophet and conscience of an epoch”. He died on August, 4th, 2008 and already on August, 12th this street has been renamed from the Big Communistic street into street of Solzhenitsyn. It has broken the Russian law that says that it is impossible to name streets in honor of known people till 10 years from the moment of their death. However the government of Russia so wanted to underline that it is against communism (Solzhenitsyn struggled against it also) that have agreed with infringement. Oh, I am a little bit tired. Let’s make a break and take a bite? Look at me, I am the King of burgers! One more small wonderful church in that area, constructed in 1659. It is temple dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos (Uspensky temple). The main relic of the church is the wonder-making icon of the Virgin Mary - "Troeruchitsa" – “Having three hands”. The icon has received that name in honour of healing by Saint Mary the cut hand of sacred John from Damask. It says that, thanks to protection of this relic the Uspensky temple wasn't closed even in the difficult periods of the Russian history and has kept all its bells. Wow, I totally didn't expect to see here such a modern and amusing building! It is a small wine bar constructed recently; it is so allocated in the general view! And the skyscraper which costs on a background forces us to forget that we are in the oldest quarter of Moscow. And last temple that we saw today - the Temple of Saint Sergij Radonezhsky. It always was one of the richest temples of Moscow, with large quantity of icons, silver dishes. It was well-known for the chorus of the blind men. Interesting feature of this temple is that it is constructed in “old believe” quarter. Old Believers don't recognize modern orthodox religion and have their own little temples. Therefore the Temple of Saint Sergij Radonezhsky has been made such huge, light and ornate to entice parishioners to the Orthodox Church. |

Hi, mom!
Today we visited an exhibition of Japanese art not far away from our house. The excursion was very interesting, now I would like to visit Japan, to learn its culture better, because I like this exhibition very much! Perhaps sometime I will go there... We have seen Bisjamonten – the deity most known and esteemed in Japan. He is one of Shitenno – «Four kings», keepers of four parts of the world. Among four deities – he is the leader, the others are his vassals. He is known as the god of War, the patron of people who is engaged in military arts, and also – as god of healing, who possessing force to protect emperors from deadly illnesses and to expel of demons of a plague. In the left hand he holds a treasury in the form of a pagoda. It collects and protects treasures, and also distributes it to worthy persons. The following hall has been devoted kimonos. The guide has explained to me, that kimonos are T-shaped, straight-lined robes worn so that the hem falls to the ankle, with attached collars and long, wide sleeves. Kimono are wrapped around the body, always with the left side over the right (except when dressing the dead for burial), and secured by a sash called an obi, which is tied at the back. Do you know, that today, kimonos are most often worn by women, and on special occasions. A few older women and even fewer men still wear the kimono on a daily basis. Men wear the kimono most often at weddings, tea ceremonies, and other very special or very formal occasions. Professional sumo wrestlers are often seen in the kimono because they are required to wear traditional Japanese dress whenever appearing in public. One more hall has been filled by toys. You know, that Japanese dolls were initially created not for game, but for magic? They said that with them it is possible to ask mysterious forces to help people and bring good luck in hunting, good harvest, to provide a victory over the enemy, to relieve of harm and illnesses. There was an interesting custom of protection of fields from insects in May. Such dolls representing soldiers had protective function and were pledge of the future harvest. Interesting, this soldier would not like to be a toy-voyager? Near cafe there is a small hall where lessons on Budzinkan Budo were conducted. It is school of military arts and principles (ways) of Japan, created Hatsumi Masaaki (1931). Budzinkan - literally from Japanese language - a temple of the divine soldier - is a classical martial art. A main objective of its followers is to lead healthy life, without causing harm to a society, developing an interconnection between the Nature and Mankind through practice of military arts and principles. And, of course, it is remarkable possibility to interest somebody! This high and lean person, the teacher, easily consulted with the strong and brawny pupil! What girl won't like it? And at last we came into a local little shop. Certainly, we have bought nothing, but have admired beautiful small lamps. I want the same one in my room as a night lamp, so cosy! |

Hi, mum!
Today we decided to be engaged in good business and to help birdies to live happily. You know, in Russia it’s really cold in winter, therefore wild animals in the city have problems – where to live and where to eat. My host lives near to park, so we solved to create a feeding for titmouse and sparrows - almost free, but effective! At first we take a juice package, certainly empty. I like an apple one - beautiful green box, reminds of summer among white snow. Then we measure distances accurately and line everything by the pen. Hm, it is not so convenient to me to hold the handle by my paws. Now we take a knife and start to cut out apertures. Not so simply, when a knife is bigger than you! We paste a paper over edges to help birdies not to wound when they would fly inside. Well we also can do more beautiful! What do you think? Last but not least - a tasty feed! For this case we bought the real delicacy - apples, peaches, grapes, cherry, seashell crumb, seeds and cereals. Sounds good! Now in park there will be the thickest and healthy titmouse and sparrows. Finally, we adhere a feeding to a tree and wait for visitors. Bon appetit! |
Dangerousebeans Posted Mar 3, 2012, 10:37 pm |
Hi, mum!
Terrible snowfalls still storm in Moscow; therefore we cannot visit Kremlin in my last days. OK, let’s continue with a museum! I’m waiting for spring, streams and birdies so much! As we've already seen the Japanese museum, today we will go in the Indian one. Directly on the entrance we are met a sacred cow – it is necessary to put a coin and there will be happiness to you! Do you know that the cow has been a symbol of wealth since ancient Vedic times. However, they were neither inviolable nor revered in the same way they are today. The cow was possibly revered because the largely pastoral Vedic people and subsequent generations relied heavily on it for dairy products and for tilling the fields. Thus, the cow’s status as a 'caretaker' led to identifying it as an almost maternal figure. According to Buddhist texts, there was a Hindu sect taught to imitate a cow's acts for reincarnation to deva. Here you can see puppets from special puppet theater - Kathputli - it is a join of two rajasthani language words Kath meaning wood and Putli meaning puppet... They aren't able to go, only a few to move hands. Dolls cope from above, through threads. In doll performances basically it is told about life of an imperial palace, about court intrigues and about patrimonial feudal disputes. Performances usually come to an end with fascinating fights on horses and camels during which time dolls-soldiers finish with each other. Historically, these puppets were not only a source of entertainment, but also provided moral and social education. Next hall has been pasted over by sheets with the well-known Indian texts. On a photo – palm sheets with the Ramayana and its illustrations. It is one of the greatest epics of India and Nepal. It depicts the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, ideal servant, the ideal brother, the ideal wife and the ideal king. The name Ramayana is a tatpurusha compound of Rāma and ayana ("going, advancing"), translating to "Rama's Journey". It tells the story of Rama (an avatar of the Hindu preserver-God Vishnu), whose wife Sita is abducted by the demon king of Lanka, Ravana. To release the spouse, the Rama has a deadly duel with the tsar of demons and wins. Ganesha is one of the deities best-known and most widely worshipped in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India and Nepal. Hindu sects worship him regardless of affiliations. Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him particularly easy to identify. Ganesha is widely revered as the Remover of Obstacles and more generally as Lord of Beginnings and Lord of Obstacles, patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. According to one of legends, his head was cut off by his father - god Shiva. Ganesha didn't let his father who has blazed with passion to his spouse, go in rooms where she was. Then Shiva in anger beheaded him, having thrown his head so far away that nobody could find it. The goddess was in anger too and has refused to forgive Shiva until he rectifies situation. To calm the spouse, Shiva has sewn Ganesha a head of an elephant who was nearby. And finally we have seen sitar — a multistring Indian musical instrument with the richest, orchestral sound. We have been told that sitar has 7 basic strings, as explains an origin of its name from Turkic words «si» — "seven" and «tar» — "string". But except them sitar has 11 more resonator strings which are called taraf (orchestra). These resonator strings, responding on sounds of main ones, also create that divine sounding which distinguishes sitar from other tools. Sitar has appeared in India in XIII century in strengthening of Muslim influence. Do you knew that earlier sitar were made of huge pumpkins? Unfortunately, it is time to leave Moscow and to go further, to Japan! I can hardly imagine, I should cross all Siberia and Asia! But, as I has decided to be the ToyVoyager, difficulties will not stop me! See you soon! |

Doll Festival - Hina Matsuri
March 3rd was the Girls' Day in Japan. It is also known as Hina Matsuri. It means "Doll Festival". hanachan displayed beautiful dolls representing Emperor and Empress in ancient court costumes on the day. This is the tradition that parents pray for their girls' growth and happiness. Usually dolls are put back in the box soon. hanachan decided to leave them for a while. Because she has more TV guests in this month. Yes, one of them is me. I was lucky |

We came to Kurashiki-city, Okayama pref. This area is kept the old city view of Tokugawa Shogunate period. (17th-19th century) There are many historical houses beside the canal. These were once used as warehouse of cotton. "Kura" of the city's name means warehouse in Japanese. Mummy, what do you think about "JinRikisha(Rickshaw)"? Nice photos we took! Cubby |

Guess where we are! Give up? ............. ......... ...... ... Lake Superior~! Don't worry-- Host mom made sure we were completely safe on the rock here: We're making a Toy voyager pyramid! Hahaha! Jillyfish Posted Aug 20, 2012, 6:05 pm |
We're taking a boat ride across Lake Superior today!
Our destination is Devil's Island. Look how calm and peaceful the lake is today: Host mom's Grandpa was stationed on this island 53 years ago when he was in the Coast Guard. It was his first time back since then...... (so it was a very special trip for us). They even have a lighthouse! Whew! We climbed all the way up 97 steps to see the view from the top= Time to go back-- we had a great time here! |
Jillyfish Posted Sep 7, 2012, 5:11 pm |

Trolly ride! Beep Beep! What a beautiful sign. <3 Oh cool! We found the Health and Wellness building. They're going to give us a free diabetes testing..... I don't need to worry about that.... right? .....right? Nope, it's all okay! I'm a stuffed animal! More snacks, please! Whoa! Look at this bucket of french fries we are going to share! It's as big as me! Hahahaha! Good thing they have all you can drink milk here at the fair-- I'm super thirsty. What an adventurous day! I hope to see lots more. Miss you lots! |

MamiTig Posted Mar 4, 2013, 3:35 am |

sephmariewe Posted Mar 19, 2013, 1:54 am |
Today I explored host's Grandma's basement!

MamiTig Posted Mar 20, 2013, 3:51 am |
Today we went to the Kansas City airport to drop off one of the host family kids, so she could go visit her grandmother for spring break. I got chosen to go with her! MamiTig Posted Apr 2, 2013, 2:16 am |
We went on an amazing adventure! Host mom took the afternoon off from work and surprised the kids by picking them up from school. She told them that it was adventure time. One of the kids asked, "A good adventure or a bad adventure?" "A good adventure, for sure!" she replied, with a twinkle in her eye. She drove us for about two hours, then we stopped at a Thai restaurant called Thai Smile. Host mom called it a "hole in the wall" because it only had 14 seats in the whole restaurant. The host family filled more than half the restaurant! Host mom said you get the best food at a hole in the wall, and she was right! It was fantastic! After that, we piled back into the car and drove to downtown Wichita, for our final destination for the evening: the historic Orpheum Theater, where we watched the Trey McIntyre Project perform amazing contemporary dance! Yes, it was a good adventure! |
MamiTig Posted Apr 3, 2013, 5:06 am |

MamiTig Posted May 19, 2013, 6:58 pm |
Once we got to Wichita, we found a lovely Chinese restaurant for dinner. The name of the restaurant was Kirin and they were having their grand opening. We ate an amazing vegetarian feast including cream cheese wontons, lo mein, ma po tofu, fried rice, white rice, and chow mein. |
MamiTig Posted May 20, 2013, 12:48 am |
After dinner, we drove downtown to the Orpheum Theater, to watch the Wichita State University Contemporary Dance Recital. They don't allow pictures inside the theater, but we got there early enough that we were able to wander around downtown and admire the art and architecture. We found an amazing horse sculpture that was made entirely out of old car bumpers. There were also pigs made out of bumpers, but they were inside of a building that was already locked for the night. |
MamiTig Posted May 21, 2013, 6:02 am |

MamiTig Posted May 31, 2013, 5:18 am |
Host mom showed us one of the country storm shelters... we were curious about them after the tornado sirens went off last week. The host family live in town, so when the tornado sirens went off, they went to the local arts center, where a huge basement room, two stories beneath the ground, was opened up for people to stay until the storm passed. In the country, people have their own little shelters, like these. Host mom said that the ground here is very wet, so not very many people have basements, in spite that it would be really convenient when the threat of tornadoes come! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 1, 2013, 11:17 pm |
Host mom was on call on Memorial Day and had to go to Erie. She was looking for the metal dinosaurs that are supposed to be on display in the are, but found the Osage Nation plaque instead. |
MamiTig Posted Jun 4, 2013, 4:54 am |
Host mom set her GPS to get to and from Erie for her on call visit. The GPS decided to take her off of the highway and down gravel roads. She came across this pretty community building in the middle of seeming nowhere. It had just the building, a storm cellar, and a small playground. When she got home, host mom looked up Odense, KS. Apparently, it is a township so small that she couldn't find a listing of the population anywhere! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 6, 2013, 4:11 am |
Our next stop was to look at the wildflowers near Elsmore, KS. Sometimes it's a good thing when the GPS takes you off the highway and into the wild! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 8, 2013, 2:20 am |
Host mom got to relax for about half an hour, helping her friend who was helping to paint host mom's living room, before host mom had to go back out on another call! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 8, 2013, 2:22 am |
The giant's mommy showed us what most Americans do on Memorial Day: Visit the cemetery to pay respects to loved ones who have passed, especially honoring those who have given military service to the country. |
MamiTig Posted Jun 10, 2013, 5:15 am |
Host mom's last call was in Fort Scott, so she took us by to see the Fort Scott National Historic Site. It was closed for the evening, so we only got to look at the outside. Host mom explained that the bricks that line the streets and the walkways in old town Fort Scott were locally made, back in the 1800s! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 12, 2013, 1:52 am |
It was picture day at the host family's kids' dance studio. All of the kids looked like they were having so much fun showing off their costumes and playing while they waited their turns! |

MamiTig Posted Jun 15, 2013, 4:47 am |
Host mom's parents were visiting, so host mom made a vegetarian Thai feast for dinner! In the wok pan there is pad se ew, and in the glass dish (under all of the garnish) there is pad thai! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 17, 2013, 4:50 am |
The host family needed to take a trip to Lawrence, so they decided to visit the World's Largest Concete Teepee! It looks like someone lives in the main teepee now, but the side building is for rent. You can read more about its fascinating history by clicking here! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 19, 2013, 5:09 am |
On our way to dinner, found one of the Jayhawk statues that show pride in KU (University of Kansas), which is located in Lawrence. It was just across from the parking lot for Zen Zero, which is where we decided to eat. Everything was so good and plentiful that we ate and ate and ate until everyone was full! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 20, 2013, 3:30 am |
It's that time again! It's summer and the Farmer's Market has come to Iola on Thursday night. People from Iola and the surrounding area come to buy and sell produce, baked goods, and crafts. We love to look and see what there is to buy! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 23, 2013, 3:58 am |
We ate "haystacks" at the Sabbath potluck this time! Haystacks have fritos corn chips on the bottom, then slow cooked pinto beans, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, tomatoes, olives, onions, and salsa. They are super delicious! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 27, 2013, 1:37 am |
Host mom says that the best part of spring and summer in Kansas is the wildflowers! These pretty flowers grow by her garage. |
MamiTig Posted Jun 27, 2013, 3:58 am |
We had to pick up kids at the airport, so of course we took advantage of being in the area to feast at the Ghengis Khan restaurant! The host family LOVE this place because you can create your own meal and watch them cook it on the giant grill stone! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 28, 2013, 4:41 am |
Host mom took us out to the community garden at about 10 pm to look at the supermoon, since there were too many trees around the family's house. It didn't seem that enormous from where we stood, but it sure was a pretty orange! |
MamiTig Posted Jun 30, 2013, 2:59 am |
Today's adventure involved playing with baby hedgehogs! They are so prickly, but adorable |
MamiTig Posted Jul 1, 2013, 8:36 pm |
Host mom's project today was to make 2 pairs of blue slippers, to go with the cosplay costumes she is making. They turned out to be adorable! |
MamiTig Posted Jul 2, 2013, 5:30 am |
Today host mom took us to Chanute to run some errands. She stopped to show us the lovely, historic down town area. The yellow brick building called the Tioga Hotel has a wooden elevator much like the one featured in the old movie The Shining, but we didn't have time to go in and look at that part. |
MamiTig Posted Jul 7, 2013, 2:29 am |
I was so excited to be on vacation with my host family, at Broken Arrow Ranch in north central Kansas. We are here for a week of family camp, with about a dozen other families. The first thing we did when we arrived was unpack and make ourselves at home in the cabin. Next, we spent some time playing in the recreation area. In the evening, we enjoyed a campfire service on a bluff overlooking the Tuttle Creek Reservoir. Sunset was stunningly gorgeous! |
MamiTig Posted Jul 7, 2013, 6:38 am |
On the second day of vacation, we started the day with a worship service in the Green Cathedral. Then, went to the beach. Later, we enjoyed an outdoor cooking lesson where we made foil-wrapped packets with olive oil, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, yellow and red bell pepper, onion, fri-chik (vegetarian meat substitute), sage, salt, and pepper, that we roasted on a fire. |
MamiTig Posted Jul 8, 2013, 5:54 am |
We celebrated the Fourth of July (American Independence Day) with an All-American (though, all vegetarian) luncheon. In the afternoon we had another cooking with Travis lesson, and learned to make baked cinnamon apples on a camp fire. In the evening, we had a campfire worship service that was followed by fireworks over the beach! |
MamiTig Posted Jul 14, 2013, 6:16 am |
The host family started the day with ziplining, but we didn't get to go because host mom was afraid she'd lose us. After that was a yummy lunch with veggie burgers. Then host mom took a picture of the view from the cabin on the way back to take a nap after lunch. After our nap we went to play in the recreation room |
MamiTig Posted Jul 16, 2013, 4:07 am |
On our last day of camp, they brought us breakfast in bed... a basket full of cereal, milk, orange juice, and fresh, hot scones! It was a great way to end a wonderful week. After that we packed up, and we stopped to take a look at the tall grass prairie and the Flint Hills at a vista just outside of Broken Arrow Ranch. |
MamiTig Posted Jul 19, 2013, 4:45 am |
The day after we got back from family camp, host mom took one of her sons to summer camp at Hidden Haven. Just outside the camp, she stopped along the road to show us the black-eyed susan flowers that were growing along the road. They are one of the many forms of sunflower that grow in Kansas. |
MamiTig Posted Jul 21, 2013, 11:55 pm |
We joined in the festivities at the Mad Bomber Run (a community event celebrating a piece of local history) by helping the middle and high school band booster club run carnival booths. |
MamiTig Posted Jul 22, 2013, 2:50 am |
We had fun helping to get ready for the Sabbath potluck at church. There were so many fun people and so much delicious food that I had a fabulous time. We got to look at the To Save A Life movie kit that host mom shared with the church elders and got approval to show it at church and do a discussion group with teens this fall. |
MamiTig Posted Jul 22, 2013, 5:54 am |
We got to go to a wedding! Host mom has been friends with the bride's mom for over a decade, and got to watch her grow from a little girl into a young woman. She was such a beautiful bride, with a country style wedding. |
MamiTig Posted Aug 3, 2013, 5:07 am |
After an exciting night of ghost hunting, we stopped at the beautiful Precious Moments Chapel on the way home. Host mom said she has traveled to many places in the world, and this is one of the most peaceful places she has found. |
MamiTig Posted Aug 3, 2013, 5:12 am |
We took a trip to Springfield, Missouri to go on a ghost hunt with the Paranormal Task Force! We stayed at the University Plaza Hotel, which has a reputation for being haunted, and visited the Pythian Castle for the ghost hunt. We didn't experience anything unusual, but it was interesting to explore anyway. |
MamiTig Posted Aug 7, 2013, 2:30 am |
The host family took us to the Allen County Fair! We saw different kinds of livestock, baby animals, baked goods, and handicrafts that people entered in the fair. |
MamiTig Posted Aug 11, 2013, 5:08 am |
Tonight was our first night in Tulsa... we watched the host family and friends get ready for the rave at the Tokyo in Tulsa anime convention! |
MamiTig Posted Aug 13, 2013, 4:30 am |
The host family were really busy with the convention today so I stayed back at the hotel with most of the TVs. This is the view of downtown Tulsa from our hotel room |
MamiTig Posted Aug 14, 2013, 4:19 am |
On our last day at the convention, we spent some time just sitting and watching the people pass by in the hall, near the artist booths. Some of them were very interesting! |

On the way home, we stopped at Red Robin in Owasso for lunch. We love the veggie burgers, but service was crazily slow!!! The table just behind us had 3 sets of customers while we waited for our food, grrr!!! But, the veggie burgers were delicious! |

We went to deliver hedgehogs to PetWorld in Lawrence, KS. It's the best pet store in the world (at least, the host family thinks so). The staff are super friendly and they let you pet the animals and teach you all about them! |

We took a trip down to the Neosho River to check the water levels. At the beginning of summer, the entire area was under extreme drought conditions and you could easily walk across at hip level. Now the water levels are showing at over 9 feet deep!!! We got a lot of much needed rain this summer! |

Host mom took us to visit the Wayne Garrett Memorial Children's Garden. It was built by master gardeners who volunteer with the local after school program and dedicated to the husband of a local teacher, who was killed in a tractor accident. |
