Hambach Castle, Germany - 15th March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

Today was nuriayasmin's only day off this week and as the weather was really beautiful we made another excursion. This time we visited Hambach Castle near Neustadt/Weinstrasse in Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle is known as the birthplace of modern Germany because it was host of the Hambach festival which took place in 1832. On that occasion, over 30,000 people from all ranks came together to protest for national unity and liberty. Even though the festival had no immediate results, it's nowadays seen as the "cradle of democracy" in Germany.

We didn't take the direct way to the castle but chose a small hiking path from where we enjoyed some stunning views on to the surrounding mountains and the city below. Unfortunately it wasn't allowed to take photos at the exhibition but we learnt a lot about German history.

Luisenpark Mannheim, Germany - 21st March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

It was a gorgeous day, there were almost no clouds in the sky. So the whole ToyVoyager gang went to Mannheim and invaded the Luisenpark. The Luisenpark origins from the late 19th century and has been continously extended since then. It's obviously one of Germany's biggest and most beautiful parks.

Nature is slowly becoming more colourful again, I really like that.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-OcMrPusKWSQ/T2o5HkkkufI/AAAAAAAALtE/LCtnv2SuFyU/s564/DSCF0429.JPG

I wasn't sure whether I liked this piece of art or not. It looked quite interesting, though.
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dP6TD_DRZzo/T2o5Ikq9KLI/AAAAAAAALtU/xVlQt_3qD_A/s600/DSCF0435.JPG

There a also some animals living at the park and this pelican came very close.

Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim, Germany - 24th March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

Today nuriayasmin visited a friend in Handschuhsheim, a suburb of Heidelberg, and we took some photos along the way. Handschuhsheim was first mentioned in the codex of the monastery of Lorsch in 765 but people had already settled there for centuries.

This is the Friedenskirche (Peace Church). It's an evangelical church which was built between 1908 and 1910.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-jQAc74NSW64/T24Q1lVy_aI/AAAAAAAAL3c/2OZEM5nbW5A/s512/DSCF0549.JPG

The church is situated next to the Tiefburg, a castle from the early Middle Ages which used to be surrounded by water.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tNzgOMWU85Y/T24Q4MxsS4I/AAAAAAAAL3E/OSs6_APciJQ/s564/DSCF0562.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zxgojPiPpAY/T24Q2_JNwyI/AAAAAAAAL28/-Hy2J36SO_M/s564/DSCF0566.JPG

There are still a lot of old houses in Handschuhsheim and this one looks quite enchanted, doesn't it?

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-tKKkunu3R2E/T24Q5u3xT5I/AAAAAAAAL3M/fva1gnX0lR0/s600/DSCF0574.JPG

Nuriayasmin's friend lives in a small street like this one.

Heidelberg, Germany - 27th March 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

The weather is still warm and sunny so I had a huge piece of icecream. Yummy...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-yVMrjUHZtBY/T3G94zQVqdI/AAAAAAAAL9I/ENanLA8-ce4/s564/DSCF0601.JPG

Then it was time to say good-bye to Sylvia who will start her first journey and travel to Finland.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-iz-U18iAS9I/T3G96hbPTII/AAAAAAAAL9U/xWUt1TvJYBc/s600/DSCF0591.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wm2iVPsKsho/T3G94cyw20I/AAAAAAAAL9E/ZhDhIf-nHFA/s564/DSCF0584.JPG

Nuriayasmin will start working night-shifts this evening so there'll be no more time for outdoor activities this month ... but April is coming soon and meanwhile I'll relax at home and have a good time with the other TV's.

Love,
Kit-Kat

Homburg/Saar, Germany - 2nd April 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

We went to Homburg, a small city situated in the German state of Saarland.

This is the youth hostel we stayed at.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KPYDtiHp7wA/T3yjz8KTDmI/AAAAAAAAMjE/Ymo_zgbCb7E/s512/DSCF0859.JPG

However, before we went to the hostel, we had some delicious icecream.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-pVnql0Ohzqw/T3yjSKjcg2I/AAAAAAAAMiI/027ugE7NPUw/s512/DSCF0629.JPG

I'm sure that you've already noticed that nuriayasmin loves castles and old things, so the reason we went to Homburg had something to do with history, of course, we wanted to see the ruins of Hohenburg Fortress.

So we climbed up the hill and had a nice view over the city.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-vMzCql0ix8w/T3yjUSEy7rI/AAAAAAAAMfg/0RVuq66247U/s564/DSCF0641.JPG

There's a hotel next to the castle and I met one of its employees:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ietQ43utRfI/T3yjV0KJUSI/AAAAAAAAMiM/RDg3gHb2nm4/s512/DSCF0647.JPG

Then I read some information about the fortress and the region. The fortress was built around 1200 and destroyed by the French in the early 18th century.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_Srq80n8n0A/T3yjWdbedlI/AAAAAAAAMfw/JMr3f-HY7KM/s564/DSCF0648.JPG

Here are the photos we took while exploring the ruins. Hope you like them.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ZQodRJu1klY/T3yjgKc1dcI/AAAAAAAAMgo/luSf8h31Gq0/s600/DSCF0709.JPG

And here's something even older than the fortress: the fossil of a dinosaur. Hope you can see a bit of it in the stone behind me.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fsRlJD-1zfg/T3yjeuY1VFI/AAAAAAAAMgY/6rpzzbJzSZU/s564/DSCF0686.JPG

As there was still time when we came back to town, we strolled through the park near the hostel and played on the playground.

Heidelberg, Germany - 14th April 2012

By: nuriayasmin

Dear Mum

How are you doing? I'm fine and today I went on a nice excursion with the whole ToyVoyager gang. We had a great day.

This is one of the smaller train stations of Heidelberg. I just had a look, we didn't take a train. Today was a walking day :-).

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-xf2q4K1UNMA/T4nao7FAwOI/AAAAAAAAM4E/tPVz4387120/s600/DSCF1093.JPG

First we went to the cemetary "Bergfriedhof". It was opened in 1844 and consists of a Christian and a Jewish part. It's quite a large area and we saw only a small part of it.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K3V448MD2fk/T4nauUXgc3I/AAAAAAAAM5U/MBaFg0HLcbM/s512/DSCF1099.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-K0FI-sv5aCg/T4natAv9qAI/AAAAAAAAM5k/5e1TNsrtejY/s512/DSCF1108.JPG

Here we're all sitting on the grave of the Jewish author Hilde Domin. She was born in 1909 in Cologne and died in 2006 in Heidelberg. In 2004 she became a honorary citizen of the town.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kL8XNuUcXFs/T4nasRNwLKI/AAAAAAAAM4M/lXbZi4XwwwA/s600/DSCF1114.JPG

After leaving the cemetary we walked through the forest for about three hours.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-1n9fcnGvF94/T4navEIUZvI/AAAAAAAAM4g/-B6H9Qt7JXQ/s600/DSCF1116.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-pgL-CdgKw0g/T4na2PpcpHI/AAAAAAAAM5Y/hiwmjbMhCO4/s512/DSCF1137.JPG

We rested on this interesting table.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-t2BhLzaeuUM/T4naxxBjMYI/AAAAAAAAM4s/A1VyknqvZdM/s600/DSCF1124.JPG

This totem pole was standing next to the eagle table so we actually felt a little like in the USA.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-renydLlz94Y/T4nayz4qmBI/AAAAAAAAM5c/q7j2s6E2f60/s512/DSCF1129.JPG

We were pretty tired after all that walking but as we had to go down to the city centre, anyway, to catch a bus back home, we decided to take some photos at the castle which is situated about 80 m above the city in the mountains.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-kUbx46x4gmI/T4na1tfZAqI/AAAAAAAAM48/tzmhb1ONxmY/s564/DSCF1146.JPG

Here you can see two of the fountains in the castle's garden.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Mf8rmhvxpNg/T4na2RPQ7GI/AAAAAAAAM5E/pHiLc0q8zig/s564/DSCF1161.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-QouCXJQE0Pc/T4na54r6hrI/AAAAAAAAM5o/Ea-57GCrHvw/s600/DSCF1166.JPG

The view down to the city, the Old Bridge and the river Neckar is really stunning.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-oTBhW0Fw6Y4/T4na5aTDxUI/AAAAAAAAM5g/Hm8x9xxwP3o/s560/DSCF1170.JPG

Heidelberg Castle was built in the early 13th century and destroyed in the 17th and 18th century. Its remains and ruins are nowadays the city's most popular tourist attraction.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Vqk1AHTLRms/T4na6JDnSzI/AAAAAAAAM6A/FPUcyzh1sGw/s512/DSCF1176.JPG

Vilnius, Lithuania - 19th April 2012

By: coraline

Hello, Mummy!
After 2 days of travelling I finally reached my new host's house. I was very happy to see a teddy bear from Lithuania and another guest from Germany - little mouse - here too! They both gave me a friendly hug and Virgo showed us his home again.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-D14qDMf3uwo/T5BVywLImnI/AAAAAAAAAUM/Dmm13P5TBqM/s640/chiis%2520009.jpg

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-uhNRnEAGhGM/T5BVyaC0oVI/AAAAAAAAAUI/IMhsOnuu42Q/s512/chiis%2520010.jpg

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wxNT3UyVHkk/T5BVzSZTD_I/AAAAAAAAAUQ/QVATpg6PgNA/s640/chiis%2520011.jpg

After that, I felt really tired and we all went to our little beds. We still didn't want to sleep and Virgo told us a story how Vilnius city was "born". It all began with a Gediminas' (he was a famous duke) dream, where he saw an iron wolf howling. One smart fortune teller told him that Gediminas should build a castle in the place where he'd seen the wolf and then build all the city. And now it's the capital of the country :)

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ozH4ULp1SUU/T5BXDhpZ9bI/AAAAAAAAAU4/-pQohVFEmuc/s640/chiis%2520015.jpg

I hope one day I'll dream something unforgettable. Maybe a castle of  mices :) Good night, mum, I hope I'll have a great time in here!

Vilnius, Lithuania - 22nd April 2012

By: coraline

Hey!
Yesterday was a very creative day and we all had a lot of work to do. I've seen my host-mum school and helped her to decorate the walls for "Art Week 2012". My suggestion won - we draw a cat! I was glad to take a picture next to my almost relative :)

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j6yWqp04KOs/T5PeKybeyrI/AAAAAAAAAVk/r8IJEtvgwNw/s640/chiisi%2520001.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Kg1tMmFODX0/T5Pd-zN4bmI/AAAAAAAAAVU/gI6TbkPgaxM/s640/chiisi%2520004.jpg

After that, me, Virgo and Dottie Mouse went to a mall. It was called "Panorama". We've seen an expo with bikes, went to all kind of stores and took a moment to sit on the benches. They were also painted by artists! I liked to be in the mall and I hope to see more of them in Lithuania.

Later that day Virgo told us that he's going to visit my homeland Germany. I was happy for him and also sad, but Virgo told us that his mum will take a great care of me and Dottie Mouse. It's funny how good the relationship between me (a cat) and Dottie (a mouse) is! I think we will have great time in Vilnius. Bye, mum! :)
