Remscheid, Germany - 3rd August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in the district Hasten, one of the historic districts- You can find lots of lovely old traditional houses here. This one is a beautiful one, although not a traditional "Bergisches" house.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8430/7719560156_a4518700e3_o.jpg

A museum is situated in this Patrician villa, built in late 18th century.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8282/7719560456_9c265ce995_o.jpg

The "German Tool Museum" is situated on the the same estate.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8425/7719561158_91cb66138d_o.jpg

Hasten is situated close to woodland, you can already see it. In the background the outskirts of Wuppertal are visible.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8291/7719561724_0cbbc84970_o.jpg

These houses, covered with slate and with green shutters, are traditional houses.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8422/7719562014_63c2ea29d8_o.jpg

We found this large machine for wood processing.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8427/7719578892_374e1a6719_o.jpg

Katja showed us the cemetary when we went back home.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8289/7719579916_e5b0a1f9f7_o.jpg

We reached the city centre after walking uphill for some time. In the background the tower of the city hall is visible.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7254/7719562946_1731ea4f57_o.jpg

And here you can see where I am living at the moment. My host moved to the house on the right side last month, to the second floor. From inside we have a good view to the park opposite of the houses. Even in the backyard there is a large lawn with old trees.

That's all for now )

Remscheid, city centre, Germany - 9th August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
originally we had planned that I would leave today. But than my next host from Italy sent a message that she is on vacation at the moment, I would better come in about two weeks. So I have a bit more time here in Remscheid.

Today it was foggy in the morning. When Katja went to work she took me with her. We could hardly see the city hall!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8300/7773342016_7e7dbaa2f7_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7271/7773342210_119e9f1275_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8435/7773342426_21affa9626_o.jpg

This is the city hall, not only hidden in the fog but also behind a scaffolding :) The lion is the heraldic animal of Remscheid. He is holding a basketball hoop on one side.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8426/7773342656_1caff02406_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7268/7773342854_0c7db92a47_o.jpg

The weather became much better until noon. In the afternoon we took a walk with one of Katja's friends in the outskirts of Remscheid, often rural areas. This one also, with meadows and horses and lovely gardens.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8440/7773343044_7990476028_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8285/7773343268_e00f89eecb_o.jpg

From here we walked towards river Wupper. Along the path we found some rocks with engraved boardgames, Nine Men's Morris here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8438/7773343484_44f4139a0a_o.jpg

We crossed river Wupper here, there is a bridge close to a lovely restaurant.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7265/7773343928_10aa7eb4d5_o.jpg

We followed the path along the river, uphill and downhill, with steep rocks.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7129/7773344144_a5e08faf68_o.jpg

Himalayan Balsam is growing everywhere.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8287/7773344396_00319fb49c_o.jpg

We had to walk for about half an hour until we reached Germany's highest railway bridge, Muengsten Bridge. This bridge is about 480 m long and 107 m tall, overspanning the valley of river Wupper. It is connecting Remscheid and the neighbour city Solingen. It was built in late 19th century. At the moment it is closed for railway traffic, due to extensive restauration work. A leisure park was built under the bridge a few years ago. There are lawns for relaxing, a crazy golf course, games for kids, two restaurants and fantastic playgrounds in the forest.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7120/7773344716_99fcf91ed7_o.jpg

We walked uphill than to the abutment of the bridge on Remscheid's side of the valley. This path is not very common, like Katja told us. We had a great view into the bridge from here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7251/7773344970_4e5df43599_o.jpg

This was a very interesting trip.

Bye
Shesh

Remscheid, Germany - 11th August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk in the outskirts in the Northern part of the city, closer to Wuppertal. Here are also lovely rural districts.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8431/7773345478_651c790b69_o.jpg

When we walked through an area with pasture on both sides we had a good look to the district Hasten ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8298/7773345726_5a01d23c75_o.jpg

... and to the city centre in the background of the photo, with the two towers of city hall and water tower.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8305/7773345940_bec9643546_o.jpg

We reached a very special school than, "Naturschule Grund". You can learn a lot about nature here, next weekend they are offering a "spider walk" for kids, they can learn about spiders than. (Does anybody want to know anything about SPIDERS?)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8437/7773346242_21b084d89e_o.jpg

We walked through the forest than.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7122/7773346540_616352e982_o.jpg

Katja showed us a water wheel, it belongs to a museum. You can find the remains of many water wheels along the rivers and creeks around Remscheid. Remscheid has an age-long history in tool producing industry, from middle ages on. All the smithies were run by water wheels.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8428/7773346760_7fe06f5c9c_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7127/7773346964_11f337fd1a_o.jpg

The coat of arms of Remscheid is worked into the fence of the museum.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8433/7773347256_50bb42dd05_o.jpg

From here, deep in the valley, we had to walk uphill for about half an hour to get home.

Bye
Shesh

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 19th August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
it is incredibly hot today. We are spending the day inside. We helped our host to  sew curtains for the bedroom.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8297/7815250818_18a19c0017_o.jpg

It was quite easy and soon they were finished.

Hi mum,
the area where I am now is called "Franciacorta" and it's popular for the production of wine, especially white wine. Here I am in a vineyard where I picked some bunches of grapes. Maybe I'll decide to start a production of wine by my own!

Shesh
