Remscheid, city centre, Germany - 9th August 2012
By: olgamaus
Hi Mummy,
originally we had planned that I would leave today. But than my next host from Italy sent a message that she is on vacation at the moment, I would better come in about two weeks. So I have a bit more time here in Remscheid.
Today it was foggy in the morning. When Katja went to work she took me with her. We could hardly see the city hall!
This is the city hall, not only hidden in the fog but also behind a scaffolding The lion is the heraldic animal of Remscheid. He is holding a basketball hoop on one side.
The weather became much better until noon. In the afternoon we took a walk with one of Katja's friends in the outskirts of Remscheid, often rural areas. This one also, with meadows and horses and lovely gardens.
From here we walked towards river Wupper. Along the path we found some rocks with engraved boardgames, Nine Men's Morris here.
We crossed river Wupper here, there is a bridge close to a lovely restaurant.
We followed the path along the river, uphill and downhill, with steep rocks.
Himalayan Balsam is growing everywhere.
We had to walk for about half an hour until we reached Germany's highest railway bridge, Muengsten Bridge. This bridge is about 480 m long and 107 m tall, overspanning the valley of river Wupper. It is connecting Remscheid and the neighbour city Solingen. It was built in late 19th century. At the moment it is closed for railway traffic, due to extensive restauration work. A leisure park was built under the bridge a few years ago. There are lawns for relaxing, a crazy golf course, games for kids, two restaurants and fantastic playgrounds in the forest.
We walked uphill than to the abutment of the bridge on Remscheid's side of the valley. This path is not very common, like Katja told us. We had a great view into the bridge from here.
This was a very interesting trip.
Bye

Remscheid, Germany - 11th August 2012
By: olgamaus
Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk in the outskirts in the Northern part of the city, closer to Wuppertal. Here are also lovely rural districts.
When we walked through an area with pasture on both sides we had a good look to the district Hasten ...
... and to the city centre in the background of the photo, with the two towers of city hall and water tower.
We reached a very special school than, "Naturschule Grund". You can learn a lot about nature here, next weekend they are offering a "spider walk" for kids, they can learn about spiders than. (Does anybody want to know anything about SPIDERS?)
We walked through the forest than.
Katja showed us a water wheel, it belongs to a museum. You can find the remains of many water wheels along the rivers and creeks around Remscheid. Remscheid has an age-long history in tool producing industry, from middle ages on. All the smithies were run by water wheels.
The coat of arms of Remscheid is worked into the fence of the museum.
From here, deep in the valley, we had to walk uphill for about half an hour to get home.
Bye

Hi Mummy,
it is incredibly hot today. We are spending the day inside. We helped our host to sew curtains for the bedroom.
It was quite easy and soon they were finished.

Hi mum,
the area where I am now is called "Franciacorta" and it's popular for the production of wine, especially white wine. Here I am in a vineyard where I picked some bunches of grapes. Maybe I'll decide to start a production of wine by my own!
