Amrum, Germany - 21st March 2010

By: RikeH

Hi Mum,

Our last day On Amrum Island – we were all sitting together and talked a lot.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3749.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3750.jpg

Most of the others will leave us and our Host RikeH tomorrow. We are the lucky ones and can stay here for more days! We celebrated the last day on Amrum drinking a delicious bottle of wine.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3751.jpg

Oups – very delicious.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3754.jpg

We sat a very long time – and had so much fun. It is great to be a ToyVoyager!

Hamburg, Germany - 25th March 2010

By: RikeH

Hello Mum,

we drove to Hamburg today.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3790.jpg

In the train we read a book...

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3791.jpg

and had a look out of the window.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3793.jpg

We went around the lake called Alster. The weather was nice – many people were there.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3795.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3796.jpg

I saw many nice ducks.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3797.jpg

We made a beautiful group photo.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3806.jpg

This was on the other side of the Alster – a really great place!

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3809.jpg

Here you see another beautiful place – the Townhall.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3810.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3811.jpg

It was a nice trip!

Greetings

Hamburg, Germany - 29th March 2010

By: RikeH

Hello Mum,

Because I want to see the main attractions we went to Hamburg again.

This is one of the most famous buildings in Hamburg, the church Michel.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3820.jpg

Near to it is a modern building.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3825.jpg

I saw this funny monument – it shows something from the Easter Islands.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3828.jpg

We made a photo of the Church Michel from the distance.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3829.jpg

Then we went to the Port of Hamburg. A really interesting place. We saw different kinds of ships.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3834.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3835.jpg

Another interesting monument.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3840.jpg

That was me in front of the old sailing ship Rickmer Rickmers.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3845.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3842.jpg

Later we went into a café. We saw a nice piece of cake.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3847.jpg

And a delicious cappuccino.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3849.jpg

I jumped out of the bag and enjoyed this meal!

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3850.jpg

Back home there were two new ToyVoyagers. They are both new ones – so we told them a lot about the life of ToyVoyagers.

Sülfeld, Germany - 4th April 2010

By: RikeH

Frohes Ostern Mum,

Today is Easter. A little Easter Bunny came to us. He told us that there are some nice things for us hidden in the room.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3901.jpg

Of course I started to search. First I looked under the arm chair, but I didn't see anything.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3913.jpg

I walked around – and look what I saw...

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3914.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3915.jpg

A great success. Minutes later I jumped onto the table. There were beautiful flowers.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3916.jpg

But it was no time to admire the flowers. I had to search Eggs – and look – behind the flowers were more sweets.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3917.jpg

I went back to my place – I found so many sweets – wonderful.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3937.jpg

In the afternoon we had some delicious cakes – they were really big, but I ate one!

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3940.jpg

Happy Easter!

By: RikeH

Hello Mum,

we are full of Easter Chocolate! So we decided to make a walk in the morning. Here you see us having a rest.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3880.jpg

There were nice big trees here.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3883.jpg

I sat in the sun – although you cannot see it on the photo - and relaxed.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3889.jpg

We found a nice small river – lovely in both directions.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3899.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3900.jpg

In the afternoon we visited RikeH's Mum – and met the Easter Bunny. He was so nice!

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3948.jpg

I found other funny bunnys.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3953.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3954.jpg

There was a hen and her children.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3969.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3970.jpg

We loved it there.

Now I will leave and go to my next host in Germany.

First I said good-bye to Dicker Kumpel. He is such a great host.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3976.jpg

All the others gave me a big hug – I will miss them!

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%202010/IMG_3975.jpg

Now I am on my way to the next host!

Remscheid, Germany - 16th April 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
I arrived in Remscheid today. My new host is Katja. My last host told me that I would meet a lot of ToyVoyagers here - but I met only one TV so far - Ceryni.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4005/4525742039_dd949bea5c_o.jpg

Soon we were three. Oops! This guy is looking familar to me!

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4060/4526372824_b14b150539_o.jpg

His name is Frankie_Blue and he asked me where I come from. I told him about ToyVoyagers and how great it is to be a ToyVoyager.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4072/4525742129_6c9025dd2c_o.jpg

He asked me how to become a ToyVoyager. I told him that it is quite easy as long as his Mummy still has some travel tags. Of course Katja found a few :D

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4526372916_046057b556_o.jpg

Now Frankie_Blue will be a real ToyVoyaer soon.

Leichlingen, Germany - 17th April 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

we took a long walk today along the so called "Obstweg Leichlingen" (translated it must be something like "Route of Fruit"  :D ). Leichlingen is a small town, halfway between Remscheid and Cologne.

The walk is following a route through traditional orchard meadows, along homesteads and through rural hamlets. It is about 9 km long.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4528592253_d3c84e44e7_o.jpg

We had to follow the marking showing an apple.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4034/4529224644_d9b9c1826b_o.jpg

You can find information boards along the walk, telling you interesting facts about local fauna and flora, about the region itself, about fruit-growing and special sorts of apples, peas and other fruits.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4053/4528591737_855a0edff8_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4070/4528592005_bdd278b311_o.jpg

These are pea trees, their blooms are not fully opened yet.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4022/4529224514_bc7c1b1f9b_o.jpg

On the meadows the first daisies and Cuckoo Flowers are blooming.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/4528591849_fda96bdf31_o.jpg

You can find blooming fuit trees everywhere, even in the forest.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4046/4528591173_6304ab2d13_o.jpg

This is  blooming hawthorne.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4045/4529225532_4e8d0d68b7_o.jpg

In the gardens also lots of flowers are blooming. Leichlingen is closer to the river Rhine than Remscheid, so the climate is milder.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4015/4529225856_17acb9f703_o.jpg

These trees are apple trees.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4063/4528593127_e981785ebc_o.jpg

We are really enjoying the sunshine.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4529227130_54106a578d_o.jpg

We had to walk along a street for a while.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4015/4533361059_fa8b75877a_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4033/4529223870_663a6fcc35_o.jpg

Here you can see the city centre of Leichlingen in the valley.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4034/4529223990_ef1111600d_o.jpg

We went into town than, looking for refreshments.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4072/4528591057_9d15c0a53d_o.jpg

The river Wupper is running through the city centre.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4026/4528592073_c301503db2_o.jpg

Here is our reward for more than two  hours walking :D

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4053/4529225138_e13f9c8e4f_o.jpg

That was a really nice trip!

Remscheid, Germany - 18th April 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today it is a wonderful sunny day. We took a walk with Katja's brother-in-law and his dog Berti in one of the valleys which are surrounding the city centre of Remscheid.

First we had to walk to the South of Remscheid, from here you have a good view to the city centre on its hill.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4035/4535333825_c5a6a20f01_o.jpg

We went to the "Eschbachtal" (Eschbach Valley). The "Eschbach" is a creek which is running through this valley.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4053/4535968018_76a6ef5bf5_o.jpg

We saw several ponds which belonged to mills in the past.

Hi Mummy,
we are celebrating a really important commemoration day today: The Day of German Beer. Since 1984 the issuance of the "Reinheitsgebot"  (German Beer Purity Law) is celebrated by the German brewers.

We also did :D

Remscheid, Germany - 26th April 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in the suburbs of Remscheid. We started in Remsched-Hasten, which is one of the oldest districts in the municipal area.

In Hasten you can find lots of pretty old houses. They are often half-timbered houses or covered with slate. They usually have green shutters.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2690/4555142201_76f7514617_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4069/4555772746_6f8d816f5d_o.jpg

This is the creek "Morsbach", this valley is named after this creeek.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3194/4555142537_66c27d42ca_o.jpg

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2690/4555142683_23b7f3cccd_o.jpg

I saw a running water wheel here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3555/4555773184_d4e384839d_o.jpg

Several creeks are running through this valley. This one is dammed to a fish pond here.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4065/4555773470_c83b2324e0_o.jpg

We walked uphil through a shady forest than.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3159/4555773620_37e09b2d40_o.jpg

The shady forest changed into a sunny forest ...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4041/4555773768_f81813b76e_o.jpg

From here you had a good look at the city centre in the distance. You can see the tower of the city hall and the water tower from here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3255/4555143499_53f3131b7c_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4555774116_b5513ef198_o.jpg

We walked along a small hamlet.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3103/4555774304_5bb4ed490c_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3044/4555774468_91855a72ae_o.jpg

Remscheid, Germany - 1st May 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today it's the International Worker's Day, so Katja suggested to visit a very important former workplace, the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen. To get there, we met Katja's friend Erika and went to Essen by bus and train.

We met in Remscheid-Hasten.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4014/4568980348_030e302324_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3049/4569013168_c5d9541cf6_o.jpg

Erika brought a birthday present for Katja, she was celebrating her birthday last week. Erika covered pieces of bananas with dark chocolate and decorated them with real flowers, with ground ivy, in German they are called "Gundermann".  Those plants are edible, in ancient times they were used as a preservation spell against plague and also as a medical plant.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3221/4568376301_584b9e2110_o.jpg

Of course everyone tasted them, they were delicious :)

Essen, Germany - 1st May 2010

By: olgamaus

We reached Essen and went to Zeche Zollverein by tram.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4019/4568376389_7765b81422_o.jpg

The Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex is a large former industrial site in the city of Essen. It has been inscribed into the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since December 2001.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3360/4568376485_d55b08b5f1_o.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3407/4569013564_dd0acdd7f8_o.jpg

The first coal mine on the premises was founded in 1847, mining activities took place from 1851 until 1986.

The two parts of the site, Zollverein Coal Mine and Zollverein Coking Plant ranked among the largest of their kinds in Europe. The Zollverein Coking Plant was erected in the late 1950's, closed in 1993. Shaft 12, built in Bauhaus style, was opened in 1932 and is considered an architectural and technical masterpiece, called "the most beautiful coal mine in the world". After it had been closed down in late 1986, shaft 12 was declared as a memorial. You can see it on the very first photo.

You can walk in the area everywhere, so we took a walk around.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4021/4568377109_5cdb157c0f_o.jpg

We decided to visit the coking plant than, we had to walk a few minutes to get there. On our way we saw this gigantic hauling machine.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4061/4569014066_b47f0863cb_o.jpg

Soon we reached to coking plant Zollverein.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3362/4568377375_a65fc76b87_o.jpg

You cannot imagine how large those tubes are!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3355/4569014340_68c5b94b55_o.jpg

Everything is gigantic here - there are screws which are larger than Ceryni.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3257/4569028688_4052e5b34a_o.jpg

We reached the end of the coking complex. The artificial channel is opened for ice skating in winter.

Hi Mummy,

we took a walk in the afternoon. Although the sun was shining it was rather cold. We went to the municipal park first to have a look at the ducks. We hoped to see cute ducklings but it seems there are still no ducklings.

Wuppertal, Germany - 8th May 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we visited the neighbour city Wuppertal today. The first thing to see when you enter the city centre is the "Schwebebahn", a suspended monorail, the worldwide one and only of that kind.

The Schwebebahn is built above the river Wupper. It was opened in 1901 and it is still in use as a local transport system. It travels along a route 13.3 kilometres long, about 12 metres  above the surface of the river Wupper  and about 8 m above the city streets.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3317/4589364865_e3b7964b71_o.jpg

We took a short walk along the river Wupper. Here you can see the Schwebebahn in front of a bank building.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4004/4589364953_a06371e9e0_o.jpg

The Schwebebahn has 20 stations, each of it built in a different style, some in the original old-fashioned style, some in a modern style. This one is definitely one of the modern ones.

Here you can see me inside the station. We wanted to take a short ride with the Schwebebahn.

We went with the Schwebebahn for three stations.

Here you can see the train leaving into the other direction.

Katja told us that we would visit the Botanical Garden than, high upon the hillside. The city of Wuppertal is situated in the valley of the river Wupper, the slopes of the valley are really steep, so in Wuppertal about 500 stairs were built  along the slopes. Most of them were built in 19th century when the housing areas grew. Here is one of them.

We reached the Botanical Garden than. It was originally built in 1890 as a school garden in the place which is now the rose garden. Between 1908-1910 it relocated to today's site, the Villa Eller'schen, a former country house of textile manufacturers named Eller, which contained a villa , orangery, residential and farm buildings, and the Elise Tower (built 1838) which provides the garden's focal point.

First we had a look at the greenhouses.

A real rainforest!

We decided to climb onto  the tower.

this is the villa, in the former orangery nowadays a nice café is situated.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4049/4589366037_11bd879d5e_o.jpg

We saw lots of pretty flowers.

Solingen, Germany - 14th May 2010

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in the neighbour city Solingen, in the valley and hills of the river Wupper. We started our trip in Solingen-Widdert. From here we walked downhill to reach the Wupper valley. In those rural districts you can often find the traditional old houses, called "Bergische Häuser".

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1373/4607926095_b61b566eed_o.jpg

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1158/4608533940_c7cce86ce8_o.jpg

This is the river Wupper which I already saw last weekend in Wuppertal. About 20 km from here the Wupper will flow into river Rhine close to Leverkusen.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3314/4608533992_7f4e2d6bc0_o.jpg

We followed our path uphill until we were about 120 m above the valley. You have great overlook from here.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3414/4608534028_ca654f6b4a_o.jpg

We walked through the forest, over hill and dale. Sometimes we had to cross smaller creeks.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1245/4608534092_ac17283982_o.jpg

We took a group photograph ...

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4072/4608537368_3910d0bdb2_o.jpg

... at the foot of this impressive rock.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4043/4608537450_d6d6b7d0dc_o.jpg

We had to cross another creek. This is the bridge that was once leading across it.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1285/4608534158_f3cd96a459_o.jpg

We had to balance over a few stones instead.

Finally we reached the river Wupper again.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1037/4608534226_cb5cca71b5_o.jpg

We walked through a hamlet with lots of pretty old houses.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1244/4608534296_88f1c030c9_o.jpg

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4056/4607926583_6cf588bb2c_o.jpg

One of the local farmers is selling potatoes, eggs and honey here in this booth. Nobody is watching over the goods here, you can take what you want to buy and put the money into the savings box. We bought potatoes and eggs.
