Travelog for: Orpheus

Lundin Links, UK - 12th August 2010

By: smaug

It’s been 10 months since I arrived here, and the evil witch twennifer has kept me prisoner ever since ignoring my mentor requests to let me free :(. But today, when my jailor and torturer was distracted I saw a hole in the ground and run in it as fast as I could. It’s probably a place for moles rather than canaries , but desperate times call for desperate measures.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/orfeo%20tv/DSCN4078.jpg

I wonder where I will end up. What’s this smell? Haggis :stare:! Better hurry up, I am not far enough yet.

Prairie Mountain, Canada - 11th September 2010

By: smaug

Hi!

I am not sure where I ended up. It’s always pitch dark and there’s lot of nice people around...it’s just they keep telling me we are all dead down here :stare:, while I know that I am just lost. I even met my illustrious and (so far) more famous namesake B), but he was too busy crying about Eurydice to pay any attention to me .
Eventually today I was summoned to what appeared to be the main entrance: they told me that I was being bailed out :D. I just had to follow a noise of flapping wings :o until I saw daylight.
It was a long walk but eventually I came out of a hole and saw my friend sammino there with one of smaug’s owls :D.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN4049.jpg

For some reason as he saw me he behaved quite strangely for a few seconds: first he checked himself as if looking for fleas, then the first thing he said was “nice tan!”, as if I had been to the beach rather than prisoner in a scottish dungeon :stare:. But then he gave a me a big hug and welcomed me back :).

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN4050.jpg

He introduced me to Dean, a nice horse visiting from the US.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino%20tv/DSCN4052.jpg

As I was feeling a bit cold I looked around to see where I was. Mountains almost everywhere.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/orfeo%20tv/DSCN4064.jpg
http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/orfeo%20tv/DSCN4065.jpg

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/orfeo%20tv/DSCN4067.jpg

No wonder it’s freezing cold. mmm, it seems my tag's gone: I thought that maybe I should go looking for it, but sammino told me that twennifer probably threw it away :(. Can’t wait to be back home :D.

Calgary, Canada - 12th September 2010

By: smaug

Hi,

Today Dean and sammino helped me catching up with what I missed in almost a year in prison. Apparently I have been even nominated for a Golden Bear B), but strangely not for best singer .

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4069.jpg

But the day flew by and it was soon time to say goobye: I am going to travel on the WTVT :D. sammino gave me a big hug and wished me good luck...and for some reason also added that I should better stay away from mirrors :stare:.

http://i607.photobucket.com/albums/tt157/smaug_tv/sammino2%20tv/DSCN4070.jpg

See you soon :).

Llanberis, Wales - 25th September 2010

By: miapearl

Hi Dad,
Today, we had a GeoCaching day, in and around the Snowdonian village of Llanberis.
First off, was a walk around Coed Doctor, a community woodland.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKZHJp_1bdI/AAAAAAAACRI/6mLXPN_IeFc/coeddoc1.jpg
The first cache was easy to find.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKZHKVXCdDI/AAAAAAAACRM/iwTv4p8kcP8/coeddoc2.jpg
The second was easy to find but hard to get to - my host's son was put on to my host's husband's shoulders to retrieve the cache.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKZHLN1-2rI/AAAAAAAACRQ/j5zKE05EdrU/coeddoc3.jpg
And the third cache here was near the lake.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKZHMAnYeOI/AAAAAAAACRU/2Eg6zDCh6gA/snowdoncache1.jpg
My host's son is filling in the log.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKt7T7ZdvnI/AAAAAAAACTM/GFdXCAUwmuw/orpheusdoc1.jpg
The next cache was high up in the hills.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKZHNW3yBwI/AAAAAAAACRY/0UbUIvvQWbw/snowdoncache2.jpg
The cache is in the Snowdon View series.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKZHOG98LnI/AAAAAAAACRc/eRX0kAKxcBM/snowdoncache3.jpg
Snowdon is visible in this picture.

Barclodiad-Y-Gawres, Wales - 26th September 2010

By: miapearl

Hi Dad,
Today, we have come to Barclodiad-Y-Gawres, a Neolithic chambered cairn. It was a public grave for the local farming community.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKZHOzypLwI/AAAAAAAACRg/rZWsnh7aGEA/gawres1.jpg
It is situated on the Anglesey coast.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKt7UcwbXdI/AAAAAAAACTQ/MAk3IFrPpu4/orpheusgawres1.jpg
Afterwards, we went for a stroll.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKt7WwsUUFI/AAAAAAAACTY/CQh1P0izH-Y/orpheusgawres2.jpg
Can I stop for a snack please?
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TKt7V3Aa1OI/AAAAAAAACTU/Mw91biAuhzo/orpheusgawres3.jpg
This caterpillar filled me up.

Din Lligwy, Wales - 3rd October 2010

By: miapearl

Hi Dad,
Today, we have come back to Anglesey, to Din Lligwy. There is a Neolithic burial chamber constructed before 3000 B.C. Also, there is a Roman-British settlement of stone buildings, and the ruins of a medieval chapel.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgmqOw6fZI/AAAAAAAACTs/cmfKazU1LYE/orpheusllig2.jpg
The chapel was built in the 12th century with some rebuilding in the 14th century and an extension in the 16th century.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgm-oyRnpI/AAAAAAAACVI/XSfJwneSGwc/lligwya.jpg
Can you see me on the wall?
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgmrPYHLnI/AAAAAAAACTw/glKxxvm14VI/orpheusllig3.jpg
There was a bell.
We have come to the settlement. The site was excavated in the early 20th century, finding various things from the 3rd and 4th century including animal bones with some made into tools and even a musical instrument.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgm_ZRiWlI/AAAAAAAACVM/hbPbDZ5Tkgg/dinlligwy1.jpg
There were a few buildings in this settlement
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgmsKIeL2I/AAAAAAAACT0/0KsADiuPB0s/orpheusllig4.jpg
I wonder what this building would have been used for..
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgmtH0cAGI/AAAAAAAACT4/H-ZkdjWFiAY/orpheusllig5.jpg
I'm perched on a wall.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgnAesBZ9I/AAAAAAAACVQ/NxGckUMZS94/dinlligwy2.jpg
My host took this photo from outside the "building".
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgnBApIE6I/AAAAAAAACVU/EGY2FthpguE/dinlligwy3.jpg
A closer look at us.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgm8F7OU6I/AAAAAAAACU8/wZ63ScDCZCY/s512/lligwy1.jpg
This is the burial chamber, constructed before 3000 B.C., and was excavated in the early 20th century after the settlement. The capstone weighs 25 tons.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgm85zRgCI/AAAAAAAACVA/Lhz6AsuGXCE/lligwy2.jpg
It is a big slab!
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLgm9hL5hgI/AAAAAAAACVE/ijbBX_R2Zwg/s512/lligwy3.jpg
My host's son was able to go underneath the capstone.

Harlech, Wales - 9th October 2010

By: miapearl

Hi Dad,
Today, we have come to the historic town of Harlech where a castle stands atop a hill.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjcjvRjX5I/AAAAAAAACVw/J8Jgx58I8hE/orpheusharlech1.jpg
The view, had the weather and sky been nicer, would have been superb.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjckfT6OYI/AAAAAAAACV0/6y6d3cOMprw/orpheusharlech2.jpg
This is one of the towers.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjckyo5lRI/AAAAAAAACV4/ryFbHC_9Uxs/s512/orpheusharlech3.jpg
When the castle was built, the sea was a lot closer.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjcmvusjKI/AAAAAAAACV8/qBBUR2HHMiQ/orpheusharlech4.jpg
The information board informs us that the castle was built between 1283 and 1289.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjc3v3c2PI/AAAAAAAACXk/K6ec76ro0xk/harlech1.jpg
The main section..
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjcnFsG9bI/AAAAAAAACWA/gwhcVAWq28k/orpheusharlech5.jpg
We climbed up onto the walls and walked around.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjcn3zJBkI/AAAAAAAACWE/8P5I2IIS9VU/orpheusharlech6.jpg
Long way down!
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjcor2ofMI/AAAAAAAACWI/4_42MV-OG4E/orpheusharlech7.jpg
Somewhere over there in the murk, is Criccieth. There is castle on top of a hill. On a clear day, it can be seen.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjcpEIsV5I/AAAAAAAACWM/DI1tWo-bzc4/orpheusharlech8.jpg
Shame the hills/mountains of Snowdonia aren't very visible.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjcpydamSI/AAAAAAAACWQ/XdouJ3_9qeU/orpheusharlech9.jpg
There is an exhibition in the main section.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjc4fPOViI/AAAAAAAACXo/bP2Bm564U_g/harlech2.jpg
Looks impressive on top of the hill. Can't have been easy to build.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TLjc5MWgUEI/AAAAAAAACXs/vW0DjFkcJuQ/s512/harlech3.jpg
What the main section would look like...

Lindisfarne Causeway, England - 23rd October 2010

By: miapearl

Hello Dad
We are staying in a caravan. After unpacking the car, we went for a spin. First off, towards Lindisfarne (Holy Island) but encountered a bit of difficulty. Lindisfarne is a tidal island and the tide had covered the causeway.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TNlY8hUn8dI/AAAAAAAACcE/jW7dTN1-nI8/orpheuscause1.jpg
We'll just have to come back another day, when the road is not underwater.

Berwick-upon-Tweed, England - 23rd October 2010

By: miapearl

Before going shopping for food, we went into Berwick Upon Tweed. You should be able to see 3 different bridges, The Royal Border Bridge, The Royal Tweed Bridge and The Old Bridge (or Berwick Bridge).
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TNlY9Htpy9I/AAAAAAAACcI/QnY-Wf2GOJo/orpheusberwick1.jpg
The nearest bridge is the oldest bridge of the three. This version of the bridge dates back to the early 17th century and is 355 metres long and 5 metres wide. It is made from sandstone locally sourced.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TNlY-7qhLjI/AAAAAAAACcQ/xHKJl1fPXAg/orpheusberwick3.jpg
The middle bridge was built in the 1920s and once carried the A1 road.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TNlY_kYmWkI/AAAAAAAACcU/dqWJ7VLVb5g/orpheusberwick4.jpg
The bridge in the distance is the Royal Border Bridge which carries the railway over the River Tweed. It was designed by the engineer, Robert Stephenson (son of George Stephenson).
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TNlZARPoptI/AAAAAAAACcY/FSly4RWqF58/s512/orpheusberwick5.jpg
Berwick is a walled town.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TNlZJuTVvEI/AAAAAAAACdI/Mzj7xInVidg/berwick1.jpg
Here we all are relaxing on a bench.

Lindisfarne, England - 24th October 2010

By: miapearl

Hi Dad,
Today, we have time only for a brief visit to Lindisfarne before going further south along the coast. This time, the causeway was relatively clear of water but the weather was a bit wet and windy.
http://lh5.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TOZULAgCSgI/AAAAAAAACgQ/LmL8ITmWy9o/orpheuslindis.jpg

Bamburgh Castle, England - 24th October 2010

By: miapearl

After visiting Lindisfarne, we came to the little coastal village of Bamburgh. Atop a hill and overlooking the sea sits a mighty castle
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TOZUMGAPQWI/AAAAAAAACgU/5NEQ0BndCSM/orpheusbam1.jpg
We decided to go and visit inside this castle.
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TOZUMqgWNrI/AAAAAAAACgY/KbKVgWZ84LA/orpheusbam2.jpg
The castle has cannons. Can you see one of the Farne islands? My host visited there last year, maybe we can all go this year.
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_7ODftPSZPsY/TOZUNd5QUZI/AAAAAAAACgc/rgWco0oXPe8/orpheusbam3.jpg
The castle is home to a museum about one of its former owners, the Victorian industrialist and engineer, William George Armstrong (Lord Armstrong).
Armstrong worked in aviation. This is a Junkers Jumo 211 F.
