Gelpetal, between Remscheid, and Wuppertal, Germany - 21st September 2008

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk to the neighbour town Wuppertal. Katja met her friend at her home. They wanted to visit an exhibition there.

These marks are showing hiking trails. The "W" means a trail around Wuppertal which is about 120 km long, the "R" means a trail around Remscheid, which is also called "Roentgenweg", it is 63 km long. "A1" means a shorter hiking trail which starts at one of the parking lots here.

Gelpetal was was named after the creek Gelpe which is running through this valley. When you follow the main path through the valley you will reach Wuppertal after 4 or 5 km walking.

I met geese at a farm. They made a lot of noise and tried to catch me through the fence!

Look at the picture which is made of schist. Not a goose but an hawk propably.

Wuppertal, Germany - 21st September 2008

We finally reached the Villa Waldfrieden.

Tony Cragg is a British-born sculptor. He was born in 1949. He bought the estate which contains a lot of woodland and a villa two years ago to build a sculpture park there.

The villa was built in the 1940s by a manufacter who made varnish. The villa was built according to anthroposophic guidelines, without any right angles. The building is under monumental protection today.

In the woodland many sculptures mady by Cragg are installed. The exhibiton as opened in August 2008.

On the path to the villa you can see several sculptures already, but you have to pay entrance-fee to see all of them.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3189/2876481378_f645bc661a.jpg?v=0

The sculptures are made of several materials. Some of them are made of metals, bronze for example, and marble and sandstone. This is the entrance to the exhibiton

and this is the villa.

From here you can walk through a large park with all the other sculptures.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3039/2875386141_e84fef141c.jpg?v=0

To get home by bus we had to walk to the town centre.

Here we saw the Schwebebahn, a monorail Suspension Railway. The suspension railway travels along a route about 13 kilometres long, about 12 metres above the surface of the river Wupper and approximately 8 m above the city streets. At one point the railway even crosses the A46 motorway. The entire trip takes about 30 minutes.

We were close to the station County Court.

Hi Mummy,
in the evening Katja made a mojito for me. A mojito is traditionally made of five ingredients: white rum, sugar, lime, carbonated water and mint.

For one glass you need

6 cl white rum
some mint leafes
1 lime
2 ts sugar
carbonated water.

First you put the mint leaves with sugar and a little bit of carbonated water  into a glass and press them a little bit with a muddler. Then you add the lime and also mash it.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3277/2880071348_efc25a6afb.jpg?v=0

Then you fill the glass with crushed ice and pour the white rum into the glass, fill the glass with carbonated water.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2015/2880071600_83c2168e92.jpg?v=0

As a decoration put a twig of mint into the glass, add a drinking straw.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3286/2880071780_59ac96643a.jpg?v=0

It tastes delicous!

Cheers!

If you are good, you can get a toy there. You have to catch it. Poor toys inside. We talked to them a little bit.

There you can buy candy. BlackCat got a gingerbread heart with the writing "I love you" on it, from her Boyfriend. So sweet.

Venlo, Netherlands - 18th October 2008

By: BlackCat

Hello mum,

today BlackCat and olgamaus met and wanted to go shopping together in Venlo. We went with them and it was a lot of fun. It was nice to be in the Netherlands again and I felt a bit like home.

Venlo is situated in the province of Limburg. It is in the southeastern Netherlands, not far from BlackCats home. She needs 40 minutes with the car, with the train we needed 1 hour and 26 minutes. But it was a nice travel.

We read this informations at wikipedia.org:

Venlo's history goes back to Roman times. Then it developed into an important trade post on the river Meuse and was a member of the Hanseatic League. It received city rights in 1343. Blerick, also founded in Roman times, on the other side of the river, was known as Blariacum.

Because of its strategic importance, the city of Venlo was besieged several times. The most significant siege was that of 1702, carried on by Menno van Coehoorn. Consequently, Venlo was incorporated into the Generaliteitslanden of the United Provinces and later became part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Here are some photos for you, mum.

A group picture in front of the post office. Odette and Titch are missing, they were too shy and stayed in BlackCats bag.

There are so much nice houses and streets in Venlo, so I will show you some photos of it.

Hello :)!

Here I am again. BlackCats camera program is working again and I am happy about it. I am sorry for this late update, but there were a lot of problems here.

On the 24th October we went shopping for BlackCats friend, who will have a baby soon. We weren't allowed to make photos inside the shop, but we made some photos of the presents, we bought.

I will show you!
