Cologne, Germany - 31st March 2012

By: Sabbel&Jenton

Hi!

Finally I had the chance to visit cologne together with my parents. I loved traveling by train and was very impressed by the Cathedral! It´s so big! I met a very nice street artist who allowed me to take a photo with him. :D We went for some shopping and had lunch at Pizza Hut. We chose a salad so that we could also eat some delicious desserts!^^

Remscheid, Germany - 4th April 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
after a rather short trip I arrived in Remscheid today. There was already another ToyVoyager awaiting me, Tamina.

My new host Katja was happy that I brought some delicious sweets with me.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7107/6899674634_d4608f975a_o.jpg

Katja already knew that two of our guinea pigs died recently. She asked me if I wanted to meet her pets. Of course I wanted to meet them!

Really? They are predators, cheeky little things.

Ferrets! These are Brighty and Shiva ...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7134/6899674886_0a12275ce7_o.jpg

... and this is Zaehnchen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7086/6899674788_c68ec31fe2_o.jpg

Katja warned me to get too close to them ... they were always hungry.
If they were really predators, they were extremely cute predators :D

Bye for today
Shooga

Remscheid, Germany - 6th April 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
unexpectedly the weather was fantastic today, so my host went out with Tamina and me to take walk in the outskirts of Remscheid. There are not many bushes blooming, only forsythia in the neighbour's garden.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7210/6905170734_1f287dac43_o.jpg

I am living in a rather old quarter, the houses in the neighbourhood are looking like this.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7136/7051261607_05102b3d2f_o.jpg

They have a large water tower in the city. The city centre of Remscheid is situated on top of a hill. The drinking water is pumped here from a dam in a nearby valley.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7193/7051261711_57496fbc15_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7192/7051261831_09782fd7c0_o.jpg

Remscheid is surrounded by woodland and rural areas, you can see part of it in the background.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5117/7051261939_2baf557abf_o.jpg

Katja told us that our walk would take us to the opposite side of the valley which was visible from here.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5115/7051262035_1d630d9076_o.jpg

This was already looking "rural" :)

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5339/7051262201_2eda2b9b30_o.jpg

We played hide and seek in the fresh grass.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7264/7051262389_3b2a44c430_o.jpg

Can you see the city centre with the water tower on the next photo? The second tower belongs to the city hall, it is 48 m tall.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5324/7051262525_47609bbbd9_o.jpg

You can find small hamlets embedded in the lovely landscape.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5075/7051262691_c84d0906db_o.jpg

Those houses are typical for this region called "Bergisches Land". They are half-timbered houses or covered with slate. Traditionally they have a green door and green shutters.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7189/6905172044_b9f61255ef_o.jpg

This house is being restored. You can see that the house is built in the traditional style, with clay-filled segments which will be painted white later.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5334/6905172172_f24a2fecb3_o.jpg

We couldn't resist to take a photo of this pink rubbish container :)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7237/6905172292_f3f9401b4f_o.jpg

We walked through a forest than.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7177/6905172436_e1abe342f6_o.jpg

Walking through a valley we found fish ponds.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5331/7051263393_65312c7cce_o.jpg

This house is decorated with historic items.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5193/6905172678_3fdd81c30c_o.jpg

We met sheep!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7039/7051263777_3d94ec7000_o.jpg

We found a lovely place for resting in the sun.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7215/6905173360_fb33a07c41_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7087/7051264225_a212c6ab71_o.jpg

Even this small barn was restored perfectly.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7068/7051264417_7d92d83ffa_o.jpg

Many industrial sites are situated in this valley along Morsbach, that's were industrialization started in middle ages in this region. There are still many historic sites, some of them still in use nowadays.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5459/7051264523_1c7e26ddaf_o.jpg

We went back home them, walking uphill forever (as it seemed to me).

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7115/6905173894_7ac13856b0_o.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5337/7051264739_fd0b5b0f11_o.jpg

This is the police headquarter with a small park in front of it.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7189/7051264865_0784dbba43_o.jpg

Almost home ....

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5151/7051265009_72426caf3a_o.jpg

After three hours walking my feet were aching, so I spent the evening on the sofa, doing absolutely nothing :D

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 7th April 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

Katja asked me and two other girls, Schnatterchen and Creamsheep to help baking a torte. First we looked for a receipe in a book.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5452/6913661334_cbc41fd74b_o.jpg

We planned to make a buttercream torte, so we decided to make a cake with almonds first.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7126/6913661418_b979764afb_o.jpg

We needed eggs, wheat flour, sugar, ground almonds, butter and baking soda.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7109/6913661542_83df33e8a1_o.jpg

First we had to stir the creamy butter with sugar, than the eggs were added, later flour and baking soda.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7183/6913666274_4e302c9386_o.jpg

We filled the dough into the prepared baking pan. As it seemed to be too much dough, we also made five cupcakes.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7194/6913661756_8200678142_o.jpg

After 30 minutes baking the cakes were ready.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7269/6913661874_daa85e911d_o.jpg

Tomorrow we will decorate the torte and take it with us to Katja's sister to celebrate Easter.

Bye

Hi Mummy,
today we finished the torte, also with the help of Katja's daughter.

In the morning we already filled the cake with cherries. We also cooked vanilla flan for the buttercream. It has to cool down to room temperature.
In the meantime we stirred butter with icing sugar for about 5 minutes. Than we had to add the flan spoonwise.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7251/6913662130_2770961e66_o.jpg

Katja's daughter helped us to decorate the cake with the cream ...

... and  also the cupcakes.

Here is the perfect Easter-calories-bomb :D

Remscheid, Germany - 11th April 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
let me show you my latest pictures from today's walk in the lovely surroundings of Remscheid.

Today we went to the districts in the South of Remscheid, there are also forests and valleys. While we went there we saw lovely old houses.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7051/7068407129_565ff1547f_o.jpg

We reached the bottom of the first valley. You can see that there are housing areas and allotment gardens. They are having lots of allotment gardens here along the steep slopes of the valleys.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7068/7068407229_f0c517d040_o.jpg

When we went uphill to the other side of the valley we saw the city centre, completely different from I saw until now here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7124/7068407401_52371ca969_o.jpg

The central station is nearly opposite of us and you can see all those industrial sites close to the station, mostly steelworks. Here is a zoomed photo.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7244/7071514901_db83e546c0_o.jpg

This is a very famous industrial site, formerly known as Mannesmann Röhrenwerke. Hollow structural sections were created here. A part of the historical factory building is still here, combined with newer buildings.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7195/7068407651_2ebbfa19ef_o.jpg

We walked through a forest than for some time.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5461/6922381222_1a191a24cf_o.jpg

Katja told us that we would walk to Eschbachtalsperre than, the oldest drinking water dam in Germany. Before we reached the concrete dam, we came along a large pond.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7100/6922327054_4370a82726_o.jpg

In a tunnel underneath the A1 motorway we found colourful graffiti.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5075/6922327204_1a8d11f5c1_o.jpg

We climbed a steep path next to the dam and had a good view to the barrier lake than.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7046/6922327324_43c8b3af7e_o.jpg

It was opened in 1891.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5322/6922327458_f3ea9bee4e_o.jpg

Later we walked through a rural area.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7264/7068408341_c2be590019_o.jpg

We walked until we reached the district Lennep, about 12 km from our starting point in the city centre. They have a route for cyclists and pedestrians here, also built on a closed railway track. We followed it until we reached the station. From here we went home by bus. What a walk!

Solingen, Schloss Burg, Germany - 15th April 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we visited a medieval castle in the neighbour city Solingen, Schloss Burg, It is situated high upon a hill above the River Wupper. We had to walk all the way up to the castle, through narrow streets with those old timber-framed houses.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5328/7079897269_b11c68b5b4_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7103/7079897405_c6bcdd2e70_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7039/6933824068_cf54755064_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7067/6933824312_55db840579_o.jpg

Schloss Burg was built in 1133 by Count Adolf I von Berg on a hill above the river Wupper. That's why this region is called "Bergisches Land". Many people believe that it's name refers to the landscape with hills and valleys. (For those who do not speak German: The German word for mountain or hill is "Berg", so many people think that the name "Bergisches Land" means "land of many hills" )

About a hundred years later it was enlarged by Count Engelberg II von Berg. This is the man on the horse in the courtyard.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7132/7079898081_a8de05de3a_o.jpg

In Thirty Years War (17th century) large parts of the castle were destroyed. It was rebuilt then, but it was used for industrial purposes for many years. In the end of the 19th century they began to rebuild it as it appears today.

In the castle courtyard you can find souvenir shops and shops whose owners are doing an "old" handcraft, for example handmade brushes, brooms, soap, lovely yarns and wooden knitting needles, toys like swords and helmets and much more.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7054/7079897937_cbc4096456_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7089/6933825506_2959b9b2f4_o.jpg

The round tower was the powder tower, it was restored about two years ago.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7132/6933825642_729edeef59_o.jpg

When we walked back to the car, we saw some of those lovely half-timbered houses which were built in 17th century.

Hi Mummy,
Katja's sister Ina invited me to join the MPS-Festival in Weeze. MPS is a travelling medieval show with markets, camp, craftspeople and concerts. It was taking place on a festival area close to Weeze airport.

I visited several craftsmen ...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7050/6969572508_ee2b036ff6_o.jpg

Later, in the evening, the concerts started. We found a place close to the stage ... there was black all around me!

Remscheid-Lennep, Germany - 23rd April 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today I took a walk in the old town of Lennep with Ina, my host's sister. First we had a quick look from the her parent's balcony on the 7th floor.

Lennep is an historical city, the city's history going back to 12th century. In 1746 nearly the whole city core was destroyed in a great fire. In World War II Lennep was not destroyed, so many houses from late 18th century still can be found here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8152/7115655941_5ebdbaa3ce_o.jpg

We went to visit the lovely narrow lanes than.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8015/6969576004_87cb7bd9ae_o.jpg

Every house should wear such a sign :)

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5038/7115656485_e53ffe532d_o.jpg

This is the market place, a farmers market is taking place here twice a week.

Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, founder of the x-rays, was born here in 1845.

There is also the Roentgen Museum in Lennep, with this giant X at the front door.(It would look much better without the traffic sign behind it.)

Remscheid, Germany - 30th April 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
after having lunch Katja took me and Pelly out for a walk. First we helped Claire Tamias to pack her things, she had an invitation to visit Thuringia. She came with us, but already in her envelope.

First we went to the municipal park, only a short walk, maybe five minutes. This is the police headquarter with a small park in front of it.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7179/6982812364_833fa67bc2_o.jpg

Soon we reached the municipal park. There you can find a pond with ducks and some turtles living there.
