Remscheid, at home, Germany - 26th May 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today Virgo and I helped our host Katja to make a rhubarb cake. Yesterday, when Katja took a walk she picked some rhubarb in a friend's garden. Yesterday in the eveining she already cooked delicious jam with rhubarb and bananas.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7279739528_291b15a15e_o.jpg

For the cake we needed rhubarb of course :), butter, sugar, vanilla sugar, flour, baking soda and eggs.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8015/7279738014_360e130940_o.jpg

We cut the rhubarb into pieces while Katja prepared the cake dough. She put the dough onto baking tray and added the rhubarb.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/7279738222_b51446bf8a_o.jpg

While the cake was in the oven for about 25 minutes we prepared the meringue topping: beaten egg white and sugar.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7099/7279738878_67afd75c25_o.jpg

The meringue had to be spread on the cake.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7218/7279739324_70912f180f_o.jpg

Another 15 minutes in the oven and the cake was ready.

Remscheid, Germany - 27th May 2012

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk in one of the oldest districts of Remscheid today, in Hasten, close to a large woodland area.  You can find lots of traditional old houses here, also this church, embedded in a large garden.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7088/7279766842_d0f75a67bf_o.jpg

You won't believe it, but we found a long lost ToyVoyager, Mini-Woof. In winter he was a bit too curious, taking an excursion on his own. Finally he found back to his host!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8025/7279767086_7607e30f47_o.jpg

We walked downhill towards Morsbach valley.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7096/7279767294_ccf9e34973_o.jpg

I liked this house.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7223/7279767482_3d65c085ce_o.jpg

Katja told me that houses like this were probably built in late 18th century.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7095/7279767756_6c71d97287_o.jpg

I heard someone calling "Leeeeoooooopoldiiiiii!!!"

????

"Hi, I'm heeeeeere!!!"

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8151/7279767996_940c7db5bb_o.jpg

Herlinde! She is also taking excurses on her own, but in opposition to Mini-Woof she is at home  here and knows the city.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7241/7279768184_34c873d492_o.jpg

I am so happy that finally I found Herlinde.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8157/7279768390_ac6292cbe2_o.jpg

Later, walking through the forest, we found rocks with engraved poems.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7094/7279768618_f5fed40321_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8167/7279768880_9a5a75120b_o.jpg

We also met a flock of sheep, waiting for their sheep-shearing.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8165/7279769666_3a900639a7_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8150/7279769932_131faae001_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8003/7279770138_7035b3b7ca_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8022/7279770508_83b5297446_o.jpg

What a lovely tiny house! It would be perfect for me and Herlinde to raise a family.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7242/7279770778_52ab6c62dd_o.jpg

Another half-timbered house is restored at the moment.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7215/7279771008_24fc37cdbd_o.jpg

Here in the valley you can find a lot of historic industrial sites. Along Morsbach valley industrialization began in middle ages.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7215/7279771222_6244aa17c7_o.jpg

From here we had to walk uphill for eternity (only 45 minutes like Katja told me).

Remscheid, Germany - 28th May 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today I took another long walk with Katja and her brother-in-law, this time in a valley in the South of Remscheid. Herlinde decided to stay at home, she was a bit lazy today.

On the parking lot we saw an historic car.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7213/7303254838_648490b2d3_o.jpg

After climbing out of a valley (like ALWAYs) we reached a point with a great overview to the city centre of Remscheid.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7078/7303255136_9a661e4d90_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7223/7303255350_ca4ed13ce1_o.jpg

Katja told me that we just climbed out of a valley to walk down to the next one. The topographical situation of Remscheid is sort of crazy :)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7228/7303255630_9800d428d4_o.jpg

There are fish ponds in the valley.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7085/7303255926_f70fbd538a_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7074/7303256094_e4a6ccdbef_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7104/7303256304_ed4ddafc12_o.jpg

Along this path you can find the remains of some historic industrial sites, partly only some walls. Some of them are older than 400 years!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7078/7303256504_bee4d01a74_o.jpg

The sun was narly going down when we went back to the car. In the background you can see one of the churches in the city centre, high above  on its hill.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7093/7303256744_65f5c12e6a_o.jpg

Like often here, you can find dwellings and factories close together.

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 31st May 2012

Hi Mummy,

a new guest arrived today, Alberto from Spain.

We helped Katja to prepare elderflower wine cooler. This really sounds weird ...

There were already lots of elderflowers.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7244/7309875592_a6a4f31097_o.jpg

Katja showed us the ingredients we would need to prepare the wine cooler: elcerflowers, sugar, lemons, mint and water.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7099/7309875788_cbdee8cc81_o.jpg

The lemons hat to be pressed, sugar and water were added, mint and elderflower were put into the liquid.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7090/7326351112_ec29596d37_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8166/7326351372_605e6e6ae7_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7105/7309876336_12017c6ac2_o.jpg

The mixture was covered with a plate, now it has to rest for 24 hours at room temperature.

Hi Mummy,
today we finished the elderbloom wine cooler. Katja' knitting friends would come in the evening, for knitting and enjoying the wine cooler.

Our mixture with blooms, lemon, mint and sugar was strained and poured into a special pot.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7071/7322269266_a307398799_o.jpg

A bottle of each white wine and sparkling wine was added.

Remscheid, Muengsten Bridge, Germany - 17th June 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
after having ugly rainy weather the whole week we took an excursion today. We visited Germany's highest railway bridge, Muengsten Bridge, connecting Remscheid and the neighbour city Solingen. This bridge is overspanning the valley of river Wupper.

A smaller creek is running into river Wupper here.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5276/7387204262_87a0431980_o.jpg

We found information signs on the path.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8012/7387204468_334ceb8ed6_o.jpg

Herlinde came with me, we had a lot of fun together. We found a "puddle oracle" ... I asked the oracle if my love to Herlinde would come to an happy end. Unfortunately the oracle was in a bad mood and did not answer.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8151/7387204858_257622897d_o.jpg

From an outlook pavilion we took a first look at the bridge. Muengsten Bridge is about 107 m high and about 490 m long. It was built in late 19th century, finished in 1897.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7071/7387205152_99db8558c6_o.jpg

Following our walking path, we reached a place exactly under the bridge. It was made of steel with two tracks.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7097/7387205422_897d6b44de_o.jpg

We reached river Wupper than, running through the lovely landscape.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7083/7387205638_ea9a0b51cb_o.jpg

Our path led us through the forest, always close to river Wupper.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7081/7387206074_99e58e9b43_o.jpg

There are rocks with engraved board games along the path, we rested on this Nine Men's Morris- board.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5468/7387206306_9da0e0e4c5_o.jpg

We found more information boards, this one is showing a map with hiking trails in this area.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8001/7387206520_a5148e6c4b_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7081/7387206822_1bb1909725_o.jpg

We walked uphill and downhill along the steep slope of the valley.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7227/7387207024_d0671b7a2d_o.jpg

A little creek is flowing down the slope, also crossing the walking path.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8148/7387207294_e15402a68a_o.jpg

We reached Muengsten bridge than, on the Solingen side this time.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7214/7387207764_24f6ef3ccb_o.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5156/7387208116_9131a3bebb_o.jpg

This is river Wupper under the bridge.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7101/7387208368_f5d881d442_o.jpg

A leisure park was built under the bridge some years ago. They have a crazy golf course, lawns for relaxing, playgrounds for the kids, restaurants and you can also play in the usually shallow river.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8163/7387208922_4e072814c2_o.jpg

This restaurant was opened about two years ago.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7232/7387209196_361ae12824_o.jpg

To get back to the car we had to walk under a road bridge.

Wuppertal, Germany - 22nd June 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we a trip to the neighbour city Wuppetal. Herlinde did not come with us, what a pity!

One of the city’s greatest attractions is the suspended monorail (Schwebebahn), which was established in 1901. The tracks are 8 m above the streets and 12 m above the Wupper River. Here you can see one of 20 stations along the 13,3 km long route.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7254/7424433510_92050191f6_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7124/7424433638_9816163e05_o.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5470/7424433846_a492436782_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7113/7424433934_beac9112fb_o.jpg

This is one of the stations.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7128/7424434046_0b439e9431_o.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5195/7424429680_1af92e566a_o.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5276/7424434136_1d2c41f218_o.jpg

Here you can see the historic city hall of Wuppertal. There is a daily farmers market in front of it.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5155/7424434258_50f883d1e9_o.jpg

We were really hungry than and went looking for pizza or anything else to eat.

Remscheid to Solingen, Germany - 24th June 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

after finishing breakfast we took a walk in the forest. We started our trip in a rural district in the West of the municipal area, we took our new guest Bzzzzz with us.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5034/7433190044_206b4a0a2f_o.jpg

We walked in the valley along river Wupper. You could cross it here. I have been here with Herlinde last week.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7120/7433190592_047f32e90d_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7121/7433190320_6622d916c1_o.jpg

We saw foxglove in the forest, lovely flowers, but extremely poisonous.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8165/7433190952_559ef8212d_o.jpg

We took a group photo on this cartwheel.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7275/7433191362_00f748ff6e_o.jpg

We reached the historical district Unterburg in the neighbour city Solingen. This church was built in late 17th century.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7126/7433191658_04044445b6_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7255/7433192024_590ed23fdf_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8014/7433192266_768eae58c6_o.jpg

This creek is flowing into river Wupper here.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5311/7433192488_c6cc375058_o.jpg

This statue is showing a "Kiepenkerl", hard working men who carried all sorts of goods through the rangy landscape in their panniers.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8148/7433192722_7007c83620_o.jpg

Have a look at this beautiful house!

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8150/7433192934_7a98cb05a2_o.jpg

We still followed river Wupper until we reached this bridge. We crossed the river here and walked back on the other bank.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8147/7433193278_2c09217b56_o.jpg

In the meantime a medieval castle came into sight, Schloss Burg. Unfortunatelay we did not come close enough for a better photo.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8162/7433193478_b03fb38438_o.jpg

Our path led us uphill for some time, in the valley you can see Unterburg.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8010/7433193764_e73d25dfa3_o.jpg

Here we saw more lovely houses with narrow lanes.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7130/7433194040_6825448295_o.jpg

It started to rain than, so we all disappeared into Katja's bag  while she and her friend became wet, we still had to walk back to the car for an hour :)

]Hi Mummy,

today we started to paint the walls in Katja's new apartement.

After protecting the edge of the ceiling and the  washboards we started to paint her favourite colour in the bedroom.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8006/7481174360_b464bcaa9d_o.jpg

We even managed to paint the wall without getting terribly dirty :D

That's all for today, a load of work was waiting for us!

Hi Mummy,
today we painted the kitchen walls.

First we tried to mix a suitable color. We put some blue paint into off-white paint ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8429/7507073950_5b3fcab2f4_o.jpg

We did not like the result. When we addes some teal paint from the bedroom we liked the result.

In case she should say "yes" I bought a heart charm for her. And indeed, she said "yes".
