Hartbeespoort, South Africa - 28th April 2012

By: Katara

PART TWO:

This table had many African themed necklaces!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/38f2531e.jpg

Very nicely made buck lampshades - from wire and paper.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/90090047.jpg

On they way back we passed some fruit vendors that have stalls next to the road. They were selling citrus and avocados.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/9d2b6e30.jpg

We drove over the Hartbeespoort dam wall...

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/cd9b127e.jpg

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/ac081d3b.jpg

Then we entered a short tunnel that cuts through the mountain right next to the wall.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/f9df2a6b.jpg

And coming out the other side!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/a61c7175.jpg

We stopped next to the road to admire the Dam, and we saw a few houses that have their own garages for speed boats!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/c9e3e7bb.jpg

I had a great day!
Hugs,

Pretoria, South Africa - 9th May 2012

By: Katara

Hi Mommy!

Today me, together with Froggy and Bloomer helped Katara prepare a "Koelkasvla-en-kondensmelktert" (Custard and condensed milk tart).

First we read through the recipe

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/caf640fe.jpg

Then we got all the ingredients together

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/c17b47c7.jpg

We prepared the custard

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/acf2d59f.jpg

Next we chopped up some cherries and added it to the condensed milk and lemon juice

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/ac86b2d4.jpg

We lined a dish with some biscuits and then spooned the condensed milk mixture over it

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/585b646c.jpg

We then packed another layer of biscuits on top of the mixture

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/fe0c5ab1.jpg

Next we added a layer of cooled down custard

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/514e1bd3.jpg

We decorated the tart with a layer of cream and some cherries

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/d19f9b1a.jpg

We placed the tart in the fridge to set.

Later on we each had a slice.  :) Delicious!

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/e7ca2bb3.jpg

Lots of love,
Phog

Hi Mommy  :D

Last night Froggy and I helped Katara in the kitchen. We made some Lasagne  :)

First we gathered all the ingredients

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/41083e4a.jpg

Then we fried the chopped onion and grated carrot together with a little butter and some mixed herbs

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/347b3eda.jpg

We added the mince and browned it. Next we added a little bit of red wine, some brown onion soup, tomato and onion mix and some tomato paste and we let the mixture simmer.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/85acbd54.jpg

In the meantime, Katara prepared the Bechamel sauce. We then layered the mince, Bechamel Sauce and Lasagne sheets and topped it with some grated Cheddar and Mozzarella cheese

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/03886275.jpg

We prepared two extra trays of Lasagne to go into the freezer

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/5d5c895f.jpg

We baked the Lasagne in the oven and ate it with some soft bread. It was delicious!  :cyclops:

Menlyn Shopping Centre, Pretoria, South Africa - 17th June 2012

By: Katara

Hi Mommy,

Today Katara took me to Menlyn Park Shopping Centre. The shopping centre has over 300 stores, 37 restaurants to choose from and offers a wide variety of entertainment.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/f4932ecb.jpg

There is a nice water feature inside the shopping centre

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/73660cbd.jpg

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/be873665.jpg

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/881fb00d.jpg

I also spotted a "Biltong Bar". Biltong is very popular in South Africa.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Biltong is a kind of cured meat that originated in South Africa. Many different types of meat are used to produce it, ranging from beef through game meats to fillets of ostrich from commercial farms. It is typically made from raw fillets of meat cut into strips following the grain of the muscle, or flat pieces sliced across the grain. It is similar to beef jerky in that they are both spiced, dried meats, but differ in their typical ingredients, taste and production process; in particular the main difference from jerky is that biltong is usually thicker (from cuts up to 1" thick), while jerky is rarely more than 1/8" thick and biltong does not have a sweet taste.
The word biltong is from the Dutch bil ("rump") and tong ("strip" or "tongue")."

Pretoria, South Africa - 8th July 2012

By: Katara

Hi Mommy and Alex,

Today I greeted my host and I said good-bye to my friend Bloomer. It is time to continue with my travels. Before I went into the dark envelope Katara let me taste some 'Peppadew'. Peppadew is the brand name of sweet piquanté peppers (a breed of Capsicum baccatum) grown in the Limpopo province of South Africa.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/e95377e7.jpg

I also had some Rose wine and shared a slice of pecan nut tart with Bloomer.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/2e91840e.jpg

Bloomer and Katara made a toast and wished me well on my journey

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk85/Katara007/phog/994ca3b1.jpg

I am looking forward to my trip to Finland!  :cyclops:

Jyväskylä, Finland - 17th July 2012

By: mmm105

Hello!

This is wonderful! I arrived in Finland today, so much earlier that I thought. :)

While travelling from South Africa to Finland my envelope got little damaged, but luckily only little. I'm fine myself.

When I was still inside my envelope I heard several voices, they were wondering who is coming from South Africa, they looked the stamps on the envelope.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-g7RLpRz-BtM/UAV0NYYd51I/AAAAAAAAOr8/tZRbJt80i6w/s640/003.JPG

They all helped me out off my envelope.
"Hello! My name is Phog. I'm from Germany, but I was visiting in South Africa."
They all introduced themselves, and I felt right away warmly welcome here. :)

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-SF_jBUm9eRw/UAV0NVEJ25I/AAAAAAAAOr4/ljI6vwSDiXI/s640/004.JPG

I showed them the great postcard what I took with me from South Africa.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-d8Lj-9CX5Ts/UAV0NcR1aEI/AAAAAAAAOsA/k7y-cN-ETSM/s640/005.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-3bq2_IXAU5w/UAV0O_RReII/AAAAAAAAOsU/ZYpNWFBOz68/s640/007.JPG

Let me introduced Kurnau. He is my host as well as the hostmom, too.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-zfiXIh5UV3c/UAV0PClbMQI/AAAAAAAAOsQ/jSXtvklNLBM/s512/008.JPG

Greetings from Finland!

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZWo9wSo7GKs/UAkQazb0ZYI/AAAAAAAAOzs/93PKu02X0w0/s512/038.JPG

Then I continued my walking, and I found a river named Tourujoki. This river goes through the city of Jyväskylä. It's about 2 kilometres long river, and it goes from the lake Palokkajärvi to the lake Jyväsjärvi.

Jyväskylä, Finland - 19th July 2012

By: mmm105

Hello!

I visited in the natural park of Jyväskylä.
It's so cool forest area just next to the river Tourujoki. It's a nature conservation area in the middle of Jyväskylä.

At first, we need to go down to the long wooden old stairs. It was exiting!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-GX1kqSCTYBg/UAkqAKqR2NI/AAAAAAAAO68/tRXH3_bRuzo/s640/065.JPG

Look, how beautiful nature there is!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_4Zndu4c6ls/UAkp_3pNYVI/AAAAAAAAO7A/QKyYFHvZpOo/s640/072.JPG

Can you see those weird things in the tree? They are "kääpä" in Finnish, they are some kind of mushrooms growing in old trees. How cool!

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-cthS7uqQ1rU/UAkp_-rREnI/AAAAAAAAO7E/I307rNv-pU0/s512/091.JPG

It's time to have a little brake, and just relax. :)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m7YahNvb4jU/UAkqCdwPg_I/AAAAAAAAO7Y/c970pN36XzI/s640/097.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-m-fGVCCLavc/UAkqBtONIsI/AAAAAAAAO7Q/4u1nsdYfDvg/s640/096.JPG

Then it's time to walk forward.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-fOQIPCNUJkA/UAkqCnHgL-I/AAAAAAAAO7c/VqtDm4Siek0/s640/101.JPG

We walk on the "pitkospuut", the wooden path on the ground. There must be this wooden path, because the ground is so wet.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-XmlNy1w9I3s/UAkqDEejYYI/AAAAAAAAO7k/OCwl8WI4BEM/s512/111.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j0RoZGpVJtA/UAkqDl_hu8I/AAAAAAAAO7w/R0ZMx3OjENQ/s640/112.JPG

It was a nice place, this small natural park! :)

Hei äiti! Hello mommy!

Today I went to the grocery store to buy some food.
ToyVoyager Lina was there, too. Together we walked through the big shop,

and the shape of cross symbolised Scandinavia.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-PPm6pmfm1Mc/UAqC2jcr5pI/AAAAAAAAPC4/Zu_-ri7VI4I/s640/011.jpg

We met a green bird, but he was boring, because he didn't say anything. He was quiet.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-L5ye943NVKg/UAqC292Ap0I/AAAAAAAAPC0/Hh036tsnOMQ/s640/012.jpg

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/--6ubE5SgVn8/UAqC7FmP_sI/AAAAAAAAPDw/nEc8wBO2ssU/s640/021.jpg

These are carelian pies (karjalanpiirakka). They are typical Finnish food. Maybe someday I can taste it, and tell you more about it...

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-HKDCsOM9rvY/UAqC8YPSRUI/AAAAAAAAPEI/9WUiSwgl-F0/s640/022.jpg

And there's the most popular rye bread in Finland.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MOFhDmKlqVM/UAqC9O7YOeI/AAAAAAAAPEM/xyLWLObzj-w/s640/023.jpg
