Remscheid, Germany - 26th January 2013

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
it was still really cold today. Katja had to buy a few things and took us through the quarter where she lived until summer 2012.

Large parts of the city of Remscheid were destroyed in World War II, but there are still quarters with lovely old houses, mostly built in late 19th or early 20th century.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8500/8418018932_d38365f8b6_o.jpg

This is the local court, the old building on the right side, the new annex on the left side.

It was so terribly cold that we all  preferred to sit in Katja's bag :)

Remscheid, Germany - 6th February 2013

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
recently we had really ugly weather: snow, rain, black ice, snow again, rain again. Last night it snowed again, but today the sun was shining! A good reason to take a walk to the municipal park :) From my current home it is only a short walk to the park.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8516/8450122551_dd3c62d79e_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8494/8451219300_edbe959df3_o.jpg

We found paw prints everywhere. This might have been a bear ... or a snow leopard ... no, a dog.

The pond is not frozen completely.

Remscheid, Germany - 7th February 2013

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a short walk in the city centre today, in Katja's lunch break. She is working in a law firm, close to the city hall, so the city hall with the largen open space in front of it was our first stop.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8378/8460669937_5157448c85_o.jpg

The city hall was nearly destroyed in World War II, but rebuilt in a more modern style afterwards. It's tower is 48 m high.

This is the central bus station.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8248/8461768634_853f7b4d7c_o.jpg

The adult education centre (VHS) is situated in this modern building...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8372/8461768742_116bdccdd4_o.jpg

... and the music school is situated here in this pretty house.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8528/8460670203_68576d67e5_o.jpg

From this bridge you have a good overview across a large cemetary to Hohenhagen, a housing area with lots of woodland around.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8460670267_93d72f5c4b_o.jpg

Looking to the opposite direction you can see the bus station and the city centre.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8382/8461766580_ed5d35018d_o.jpg

This is the shopping street...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8234/8461766680_06896ba9c7_o.jpg

... and the main entrance of the shopping mall Allee-Center.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8384/8461769042_38b161e33f_o.jpg

At the end of the shopping street you can find these giant forceps, a symbol for the local tool producing industry.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8372/8460670607_973f5fba3d_o.jpg

We had to return to work than.

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 10th February 2013

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
a new guest arrived today,  Easy, a brown rodent like me.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8529/8461774722_cf0f06dce9_o.jpg

He is looking like a sibling of me. Maybe we are kin to each other?

Solingen-Burg, Germany - 10th February 2013

By: olgamaus

Later we visited a medieval castle in the neighbour city Solingen, Schloss Burg, It is situated high upon a hill above the River Wupper.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8090/8460705971_136b50c4d5_o.jpg

We went to the courtyard with many shops. You can find souvenir shops and shops whose owners are doing an "old" handcraft, for example handmade brushes, brooms, soap, lovely yarns and wooden knitting needles, toys like swords and helmets and much more.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8383/8461804612_d16be9d0ca_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8238/8461804868_fbb76ec88a_o.jpg

Schloss Burg was built in 1133 by Count Adolf I von Berg on a hill above the river Wupper. That's why this region is called "Bergisches Land". Many people believe that it's name refers to the landscape with hills and valleys. (For those who do not speak German: The German word for mountain or hill is "Berg", so many people think that the name "Bergisches Land" means "land of many hills" )

About a hundred years later it was enlarged by Count Engelberg II von Berg. This is the man on the horse in the courtyard.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8386/8461804970_18a6e58e5a_o.jpg

In Thirty Years War (17th century) large parts of the castle were destroyed. It was rebuilt then, but it was used for industrial purposes for many years. In the end of the 19th century they began to rebuild it as it appears today.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8109/8460706639_b597894b9c_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8524/8461805254_8eb818f05f_o.jpg

We took a walk in the surroundings of the castle than. Katja took a group photo with the castle in the background.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8244/8462229700_e322d0f92c_o.jpg

Soon we reached an outlook pavilion. You have a stunning overview across the valley here and also a good view to the castle.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8386/8461805718_9247aa77f6_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8383/8461805914_11723508a9_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8088/8460707535_2f787ac4e8_o.jpg

A terrible storm destroyed large parts of the forest some years ago.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8520/8460707607_afeb4a3ebe_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8252/8461806194_66066c301f_o.jpg

We took a side trip to the concrete wall of a nearby dam, Sengbachtalsperre. We thought the surface had been frozen, but it wasn't frozen at all.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8098/8461806296_62f7b1a963_o.jpg

Far in the distance (the middle of the photo) you can see the city of Remscheid lying in the sun.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8370/8461806388_0db0762102_o.jpg

Here you can see it much better on a zoomed photo.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8526/8467292293_86e7e08242_o.jpg

On our way back to the car we walked through a lovely rural district.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8111/8460708081_541be1225f_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8087/8460708303_04679b9f5a_o.jpg

Walking through the cold is really exhausting :)

Love
Mr. Stanley

Remscheid, Germany - 12th February 2013

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today Katja told me that I would travel to my next host. That sounds good - but it also means that I will have to leave my new best friend Easy. We both went with Katja to her work place and noshed nearly all those delicious pralines that her colleague had brought with her.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8240/8467292563_a69eb0e3a5_o.jpg

We were joking around because it is still carnival. Now I am "Goldfeet", not "Goldfinger :D :D

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8518/8467292789_1f0cf8d3f8_o.jpg

Than it was time to say good-bye to Easy and Katja. I hopped into my envelope and will leave in the evening.

Katja promised that the trip to my next host would not take long.

Bye-bye!
Mr. Stanley
