Remscheid, Germany - 17th May 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we had fantastic weather, so we took a walk in the outskirts of Remscheid. We started in the district Lennep, one of the historic parts of the city. Soon we left the city area and walked through rural areas.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8160/7216267904_4c29dc0a11_o.jpg

We reached an upstream temporary dam, it belongs to Wupper dam.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5468/7216268058_9947118060_o.jpg

We followed a path along a now closed railway track.

This is the old railway building.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7092/7216268386_bdbfee6986_o.jpg

We walked through an old worker's housing estate. They once belonged to a cloth mill.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8156/7216268768_31f431ce89_o.jpg

In the forest we  found lots of blooming trees and bushes, like this hawthorn.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7239/7216268964_b8bb949980_o.jpg

We enjoyed the warm sunshine :)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7232/7216269100_c619c3c154_o.jpg

We also took a walk in the city centre of Lennep. Here you can find an historic city core, most  houses were built in late 18th century after a great fire. You can find typical "Bergische Häuser" here - mostly half-timbered houses and houses which are covered with slate, with characteristic green shutters.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7219/7216269374_eff88d097c_o.jpg

This is "Klosterkirche", a former church of an abbey. Nowadays it is a cultural centre and a lovely restaurant.

Solingen-Graefrath, Germaany - 20th May 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we visited an exhibtion for "garden and living" today in the neighbour city Solingen. It was taking place in the palace garden of Schloss Gruenewald.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7230/7234757066_174d28e5f8_o.jpg

You could see the most interesting things around gardening. Flowers of course, decorating items, barbeques, all sorts of fire places, exclusive furniture for balcony and patio, also handmade jewelry, intesting food, spices, cheese, handmade clothings ....

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5112/7234757300_546bbcd284_o.jpg

There was also a bird of prey demonstration.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5326/7234757660_9e0b8ece33_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8007/7234774658_9f1a3675b2_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7230/7234774936_cc613cf26b_o.jpg

This is a garden decoration made of wood and coloured glass.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5349/7234757892_a20923df7a_o.jpg

Here you can see the castle, completely different from what I have known as a castle by now.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7212/7234758114_f8da362ba3_o.jpg

Those branches with leaves made of glass were at least 2,5 m tall.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5327/7234758392_40f947595c_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7230/7234758686_096390f7e6_o.jpg

We bought marine salt from Camargue with herbs and a piece of honey soap.

On our way back to the car we came across this rape field. There were wooden boxes - bee homes (that's where rapeseed honey is made :D ).

Remscheid, Germany - 21st May 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
in Katja's lunch break we took a walk around the city centre.

Let me show you the water tower first. The city centre of Remscheid is situated on a hill,  the water tower was built at the highest point of that hill. Its tower and the nearby tower of the city hall are visible from the surrounding cities.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7100/7248076274_457216dfdc_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7075/7248076422_9bfd4c518f_o.jpg

Here you can see the company bulding of the local newspaper, Remscheider General-Anzeiger.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7227/7248076492_eb870873cb_o.jpg

This is the central bus station.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8142/7248076578_43b893f061_o.jpg

The shopping street with the pedestrian area is beginning here. A farmers market is taking place here twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7089/7248076692_137247a414_o.jpg

We walked along  the shopping street ...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7072/7248076782_aefc213148_o.jpg

... and soon we reached the shopping mall, Allee-Center.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7234/7248076892_278bca418a_o.jpg

Those giant forceps are marking the beginning of the shopping street. They are symbol for the worldwide well known tool producing industry.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/7248077006_f95b2e7c64_o.jpg

This is the city hall, its tower is 48 m tall.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7092/7248077148_673f07bee4_o.jpg

When we walked towards our home Katja showed us a part of the city with lots of lovely old houses (and a renovated hospital).

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7105/7248077252_63ec205e5f_o.jpg

From here  we only had to walk a few minutes to get home.

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 27th May 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today Leopoldi and I helped our host Katja to make a rhubarb cake. Yesterday, when Katja took a walk she picked some rhubarb in a friend's garden, Yesterday in the eveining she already cooked delicious jam with rhubarb and bananas.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7279739528_291b15a15e_o.jpg

For the cake we needed rhubarb of course :), butter, sugar, vanilla sugar, flour, baking soda and eggs.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8015/7279738014_360e130940_o.jpg

We cut the rhubarb into pieces while Katja prepared the cake dough. She put the dough onto baking tray and added the rhubarb.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7094/7279738442_7c7311ab6c_o.jpg

While the cake was in the oven for about 25 minutes we prepared the meringue topping: beaten egg white and sugar.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8156/7279738664_07f3d8e6cc_o.jpg

The meringue was spread on the cake.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7228/7279739104_1413d4c58c_o.jpg

Another 15 minutes in the oven and the cake was ready.
