Puerto Montt, Chile - 17th April 2013
By: Leslie
Hi mum!
After a long time I'm finally writing again, I'm very sorry for not giving any life signals before!
In February I helped Leslie move to another city, now we are even southern than before, in a city called Puerto Montt! Pato says that this city is smaller than Temuco, where they lived before, but I never got to see that other city so I can't really know the differences, but if you want to know what Puerto Montt looks like, just keep scrolling down But first I want to show you some photos of a trip we made around a place called Caburgua.
These waterfalls are called "Eyes of Caburgua" because someone thought that they look like eyes... but i see three waterfalls that person must have had a lot of imagination.
This lagoon is called, surprinsingly, Blue Lagoon
It had a very intense blue color and looked so calm and pretty that we were all dying to go swim in there, but sadly it is forbidden.
There are some legends about this lagoon being hipnotic and I believe they might be true
And now Im going to show you Puerto Montt, the city where Im staying Puerto means port, I learned that when i heard the story of the city, I also learned that it started as a small port long ago and now a big part of it is built on the hills around the water...
Those two buildings back there are built over the main mall of the city and they have a beautiful view over the sea
You can see here that it's always windy and these flags are always flapping... The white flag with the ship is the flag of Puerto Montt and the other one is the chilean one
Here I am standing on a valcony on one of the towers I ust showed you before.
I told you they have a very nice view
I've heard that spring doesnt want to show up back at home, apparently the nice weather is staying in the south because
even though its already autumn here it is still warm and nice most of the days...
I hope you liked the photos!
Bye bye

Frutillar, Chile - 23rd April 2013
By: Leslie
On the weekend we decided to make a trip to a near city called Frutillar which is some kilometers to the north, so first we frove to a small city called Llanquihue.
In Llanquihue there was a pond with lots of lotuses!
But because of the time of the year none had flowers
To get to our destination, Frutillar, we had two choices, the high way of a small road through the hills by the side of Llanquihue Lake , so we chose the last option because hills by the lake sounded like a good combination for nice landscapes
What an interesting mural
And here we reached Llanquihue lake, the sign says that we are at the "swans viewpoint", and no wonder why it has this name...
giant black necked swans!
And here we started out way through the small road to Frutillar!
♫ I believe I can fly! ♪ ♩
Autumn arrived at this side of the world and you could see yellow and orange leaves everywhere on the ground
I really like the colors of autumn!
Most of the land around the lake is used in farms, back there very small you can see Osorno volcano
We stopped for a while in these gardens, what a beautiful view we had from up here!
I found black mushrooms on the ground!
Autumn is all around!
After driving for a while suddenly these sails appeared next to us, that means we are arriving at Frutillar
In 1852 the goverment offered this land to german settlers from Hamburg, so everywhere in this city you can see german heritage, there is german architecture, signs, people and whatnot! I felt very much at home
This is the famous Teatro del Lago "theater of the lake", very appropiate name, don't you think so? artists from all around come to perform here
Frutillar is a very musical city, almost everything here is either related to germany or to music, there was even a fake piano by the lake!
Frutillar is a famous holiday spot for tourists, people from all over the world come to this beach in summer (and not only people but also toyvoyagers)
This is the goverment building, and look what i saw here...
A sign in german!
In the afternoon the weather was a bit strange and a beautiful rainbow appeared in the sky!
I hope you liked the trip photos as much as I liked the trip itself
Bye bye!

Fresia, Chile - 1st May 2013
By: Leslie
Hello mum!
A few days ago we thought of exploring around the undiscovered south, so we got in the car and started driving
There are really beautiful green prairies around!
After driving for a while we arrived to a small town called Fresia and the first thing we saw there was this church by the road.
There was not much to see there, there weren't even people on the streets, a very small and quiet town it was.
This seemed to be the main church of the town.
Next to it there was a monkey puzzle, the chilean national tree, here called Araucaria
As there was not much to see in the town of Fresia, we kept driving on the roads through the country.
This seems to be the land of mushrooms!
I found one so big and round that almost resembles an ufo!
In the middle of nowhere we found this monument standing by the road, it marks the place where the last battle between the spanish and the chileans was, on March 6th, 1820.
This is the coat of arms of this place, Fresia.
All the trees look beautiful dressed in yellow
On the top of a little hill we saw a church
So we drove to it, it was beautiful!
And next to the church there was a field with deers!
This one was very friendly, she even let us pet her
Here she's giving me a kiss
Behind me you can see two little fawns, they were a little shy to come closer so I could only see them from the distance
Oh hello there
The ground was full of chestnuts, the deers loved them!
Next to the church there was a small cemetery.
When the sun started setting we went back to the car and returned to Puerto Montt.
And we went to a supermarket where I found "piñones", the seed of Araucarias (monkey puzzle). They're sold as food, the only thing you have to do is boil them and theyre ready to eat
It was a very nice day!
Bye bye!

Castro, Chile - 8th June 2013
By: Leslie
On the weekend we made a trip to a big island to the south, Chiloé. It was chosen by Natgeo as the 5th most beautiful island in the world so I was very excited to go!
We got on a big ferry to cross the sea for 45 minutes
The wind was really freezing on the deck, my red beanie helped a lot
And we left the mainland!
We arrived at a city called Ancud, its the most northern city of the Chiloé island. This was the view from our hotel room
In the main square of Ancud we found this statue, it it the Pincoya, one of the most famous characters of the chilean mithology. The leyend says she is the spirit of fertility and can bring good or bad luck to the people of the island.
Here you can read a little of the legend
We kept walking through the square...
and found 2 big snake statues
They are from a legend that says that 2 snakes, a good and an evil one were the ones who formed the chilean terrain. Interesting legend
Walking a bit more we found the Trauco. He is probably the most famous character of the chilean mithology. Leslie told me the legend, it says that this creature who is not human lived in the woods of the island and attracts young women and can kill men just by looking at them.
Long ago in the past, when the legends were thought to be true, many women who got pregnant used this legend as an excuse and said that the Trauco was the father.
This one is The Widow
and this is her legend.
This one has a very creepy story, he is called Invunche and the legend says that he was kidnapped by witches as a baby and raised in a cave fed with black cat milk and flesh from corpses and his legs were broken and his bones deformed so he can't leave the cave
Some legends this place has
Around the corner I found another statue, this is the Pincoy, the husband of the Pincoya... and her brother at the same time
And another carving showint the Invunche, the one with the creepy legend
In front of the main square was the church of the city. It used to be a big old church, but it fell with an earthquake so they built this new one.
In a restaurant I saw this painting, it shows the famous "palafitos" of Chiloé, which are houses standing on trunks over the water.
After lunch we walked around the city...
and got to a fortress from 1770 that was used by the spanish back then in the times of the conquest.
I learned that this city was the last city in Chile occupied by the spanish, here stood the last spanish flag in Chile in 1826.
There stands the name of the city, Ancud
After staying in the fortress for while we kept walkind around the city...
We walked through the promenade, it was nice...
In a square we found a little festival and there were police students singing, it was a very inusual show!
Then we watched the sunset and went back to the hotel.
The day was very nice and I liked this city and most of all the interesting legends and statues! I hope you liked them too.
Bye bye

Ancud, Chile - 16th June 2013
By: Leslie
Hello everyone!
So, following the story from my last update...
The next day at the hotel we found this figure of the old main church that fell down during an earthquake, it must have been very beautiful to see!
After breakfast we went to the backyard, there was a thick fog but the view still loooked beautiful!
Later we would take a bus to go to another city, Castro, so I took a look at a few maps to see where it is
In the north of the map you can see Castro, the city where we were.
While we waited for out bus at the bus station we found these paintings showing the local mithology, you can see the characters that I told you about!
And there was another one
About one hour later we arrived to Castro, the first thing we did was walk to the main square where one of the famous Chiloé UNESCO chuches is
And this is it! The UNESCO church of Castro
In the square there was a fountain with a statue of the Pincoya, do you remember her? the spirit of fertility.
Then we ate at a "Palafito" restaurant. Palafitos are these type of constructions standing on water, they are very famous in Chiloé!
And then we took our bus back to Puerto Montt. On the drive we passed in front of the most famous Palafitos of Chiloé, in fact, if you google "Chiloé" you're probably going to see these very same palafitos
Then it was time to cross on the ferry back to the mainland, so we waited while looking at the nice sunset colors
The wind was very strong and very very cold, but that didn't keep us inside the bus
In the horizon you can see the mainland waiting for us!
Bye bye Chiloé!

Llanquihue Lake, Chile - 8th July 2013
By: Leslie
Hi mummy!
Winter is here since a few days ago and Leslie's face has a smile from one ear to the other because her winter holidays just started today, so it's going to be almost one month without those ugly books that keep us at home so often
This weekend the weather was wonderful and we spent it in a hut by the shore of Lake Llanquihue.
Wow what a beautiful place!
That tree behind me is called arrayán and it blooms a little white flower in spring, very nice, i was told
Right outside our hut we had this private beach just for us
How tropical! huhu
But dont let the shining sun fool you, it wasn't as warm as it might look
And this was the view from our window, hmm not bad, not bad at all
It seems like hey knew i was coming and got me a good sized boat to sail the lake, woohoo I can't wait!
The stairs were a little bit scary, i dont want to climb them at night half asleep
And this was the view from my bedroom...
What a nice place!
Later on saturday a slight rain started, and this beautiful rainbow appeared over our heads
And we could see its base!
But there was no leprechaun or pot of gold... but there was a yacht and a nice summerhouse, so i guess that's not bad either
I really liked it here, if you ever come, this is the place to stay
bye bye!

Temuco, Chile - 3rd August 2013
By: Leslie
Hola a todos!
I still see that Leslie is in holidays so today I asked her why not go visit her hometown Temuco that I never had the chance to see before, and she said why not?
So 4 hours later we were here, in Temuco
This is the main square of the city, nice palm trees
I read that this monument shows spanish conquerors and aborigins, called Mapuches
Here you can see both of them, an aborigin with his seeds and a conqueror with guns
It looks like a firework!
The rest of the trees were naked, proving that its mid winter here, because the sky today looked totally beautiful like in a nice summer day
And after the main square we went to the main mall of the city
Nice nice, same as our day, which ended here, in this little café.
Hope you liked it too
Bye bye!

Lago Chapo, Chile - 30th August 2013
By: Leslie
Hi all!
Winter is slowly starting to leave us, giving way to the beautiful spring to come! Some days we even saw the blue sky above us and that was very very nice! It's still not warm, but not as cold as before either
This long long gravel road leads to a beautiful lake, Lake Chapo
After a curve the mighty mointain range appeared in front of us!
And on the way we passed next to the biggest Fitzroya trunk found in the area! Its huge! can you see me? Im there!
We also passed next to an abandoned old house
Here we are already in the outskirts of the mountain range so it snows all winter
The shadow was very cold, there was still frost and some snow on the ground...
And after driving some more through the gravel road we arrived, this is the Lake Chapo!
Next to the lake there was a Fitzroya forest thousands of years ago, but the lake grew bigger and inundated them, so they died.
Hundreds of years later the lake moved back again and the tree trunks remain there eversince.
This is almost like a window to the past
Here's a whole trunk, very very long, must have been a majestic tree once!
What a beautiful place, very peaceful... you can even feel the spirit of the trees watching you
I loved it!
Yours,
Peaches

Lago Llanquihue, Chile - 28th September 2013
By: Leslie
Hello my dear people and fellow toyvoyagers!
I've been enjoying the landscapes around now that spring arrived and the temperatures are raising and the clouds and rain are leaving us. At least for the past few days I havent been cold and the sun has been shining over my head in its nice clear blue sky, which gives way to the volcanoes view from pretty much all parts of the city! Very very nice.
We made a trip driving around the biggest lake of the area, Lake Llanquihue, which is at the side of Osorno volcano.
To the other side of the car we also saw Calbuco vocano
When driving high near the volcano we made a stop at a viewpoint and there was a fox sitting there!
This kind of fox is called Culpeo and lives in mountains, prairies and forests of the west area of South America.
He wasn't as shy as we would have expected, and let us get quite close to him
Behind me: fox and Calbuco volcano
From that viewpoint we had a beautiful view over the volcano outskirts.
Back there behind the tress you can see the lake Llanquihue
And to the other side, the volcano whose outskirts we were at, the Osorno volcano
Then we drove a little more around the lake and reached another viewpoint with a similar view to the last one... but two views can never be the same so I wanted to get my photo taken here anyway
Then we kept driving more and saw another beautiful thing, this mother and her baby horse How lovely.
And in the end off the trip we arrived to this waterfall in the outskirts of the volcano. The shadow was so cold that there was still some frost around even though the sun was shining next to it!
After that we drove back home to Puerto Montt through the same road.
And right now, after I finish writing this, we are going out again because the sun shines shines
Good bye!
