Bochum, Germany - 19th June 2012

By: Shilo

Hello Mum.

Today I was leaving Bochum and will travel on to my next host in Remscheid. Shilo told me, that it will be a short trip, because Remscheid isn’t far away.
Before I leave, I had to say good bye to my new friends. I will miss them all, but hopefully we will meet again somewhere. I wish them a lot of fun on their journeys.
The others hugged me, before I went into my envelope.

Remscheid, Gerrmany - 20th June 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
I arrived at my next host's home today. I am now in Remscheid, also in North Rhine-Westphalia, not too far from Bochum.

My new host is Katja and I was given a warm welcome by her and some more ToyVoyagers. There are Leopoldi, Rishu, Orkku Orava and Alberto.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5115/7408504290_5cd9305cc9_o.jpg

I brought a funny postcard with me and Haribo Gummibaerchen, a typical German delicacy :D Thanks to Shilo!

My host will change house next month, she already has the keys of the new apartment. In the afternoon we went there to measure the rooms. It is only a five-minutes-walk apart from my current home.

We started in the kitchen.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8141/7408504544_fcd46275f8_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8149/7408505032_f33eb6c776_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8146/7408504700_f7cdb26061_o.jpg

It is a very large kitchen, nearly 20 square metres!

This will be the living room.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8147/7408504866_7e84c81fd9_o.jpg

Those houses on the right side were probably built in early 20th century. They are much more pretty at the front side :)

This house here was built in early 1940's years.

There is a lawn with trees in the backyard.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8001/7408505478_e2a5aef5c1_o.jpg

From the kitchen you can look at those pretty houses and also to a park.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8150/7408505690_b6a49baa1b_o.jpg

I hope I will stay long enough to help moving house.

Bye
Lorca

Wuppertal, Germany - 22nd June 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we a trip to the neighbour city Wuppetal.

One of the city’s greatest attractions is the suspended monorail (Schwebebahn), which was established in 1901. The tracks are 8 m above the streets and 12 m above the Wupper River. Here you can see one of 20 stations along the 13,3 km long route.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7271/7424435442_654626cab9_o.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5071/7424435922_d64ba7cd13_o.jpg

This is one of the stations.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5120/7424436012_059f13052d_o.jpg

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5120/7424436108_bfa14057e1_o.jpg

Here you can see the historic city hall of Wuppertal. There is a daily farmers market in front of it.

http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5470/7424436222_46ce58353f_o.jpg

We were really hungry than and went looking for pizza or anything else to eat.

Hi Mummy,
we took a short walk in the city centre in our lunch break. As Katja is working close to the city halll, she showed us the water tower first, situated at the rear side of the city hall.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8004/7481562642_d623f8ccf6_o.jpg

One of the  main streets in the city centre. If you followed this road downhill, you would soon arrive at my current home.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7127/7481563398_53d3c95117_o.jpg

The central bus station is also situated at this road.

Hi Mummy,
today we had to buy a few things in the shopping street. Here is the main entrance of the shopping mall.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7112/7462022052_30015e463c_o.jpg

At the end of the shopping street we found this colourful fointain.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7113/7462022592_8c14458163_o.jpg

This is the station area, modernized a few years ago with a new shopping centre.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8147/7462023442_b2f9a33cf3_o.jpg

Katja told us that we would go to a DIY-store to look for wall paint.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7131/7462023944_22a55216ca_o.jpg

On our way back we crossed the station once more.

Hi Mummy,
today we started to paint in the wallks in the new apartement. First we had to protect the floor.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8006/7481174360_b464bcaa9d_o.jpg

Soon we finished the bedroom.

Remscheid, Germany - 22nd July 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
there isn't everything ready in the new apartement, but we are working hard :)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8293/7635928986_7cb244efa1_o.jpg

There are still some tools and a workbench.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7118/7635929948_13e381984c_o.jpg

Finally the weather became better after more than two weeks with heavy rain, so we decided to take a walk in the outskirts.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8423/7635930414_3211885d86_o.jpg

The municipal area of Remscheid is surrounded by forests and valley, really lovely.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7139/7635933098_7134b04a2e_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8006/7635935846_b04abb1fa4_o.jpg

We found hogweed in the valley. Katja told us that it came originally from the Causasian Mountains. It is quite dangerous for people because its sap can damage your skin.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7136/7635938114_70a277b214_o.jpg

The markings on the tree on the left side are hiking trails. The encircled "R" stands for a hiking path which is following the borders of the municipal area of Remscheid, about 65 km long.

Remscheid, Germany - 3rd August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in the district Hasten, one of the historic districts- You can find lots of lovely old traditional houses here. This one is a beautiful one, although not a traditional "Bergisches" house.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7275/7719554076_ae6d000a1d_o.jpg

A museum is situated in this Patrician villa, built in late 18th century.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8432/7719554414_f3e7a391c4_o.jpg

The "German Tool Museum" is situated on the the same estate.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8293/7719554844_83b14f809a_o.jpg

Hasten is situated close to woodland, you can already see it.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8294/7719555168_428b8871fb_o.jpg

These houses, covered with slate and with green shutters, are traditional houses.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7273/7719555710_765dac76d1_o.jpg

We found this large machine for wood processing.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8427/7719578892_374e1a6719_o.jpg

Katja showed us the cemetary when we went back home.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8293/7719555988_33d5d8fa10_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7274/7719556236_3de430afde_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8289/7719579916_e5b0a1f9f7_o.jpg

We reached the city centre after walking uphill for some time. In the background the tower of the city hall is visible.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8432/7719556556_f7454b7aa9_o.jpg

And here you can see where I am living at the moment. My host moved to the house on the right side last month, to the second floor. From inside we have a good view to the park opposite of the houses. Even in the backyard there is a large lawn with old trees.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8290/7719556880_aecf8aa8e9_o.jpg

That's all for now )

Remscheid, Germany - 9th August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk in the outskirts of Remscheid to have a look at Muengsten Bridge, Germany's highest railway bridge.

We started our trip in a rural district in the West of Remscheid.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8297/7773406162_0ec14699b6_o.jpg

We followed River Wupper, which is marking the border between Remscheid and the neighbour city Solingen here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7267/7773406372_2eaff536e6_o.jpg

There are some rocks with engraved board games.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8430/7773343714_55552ddc97_o.jpg

The path led us uphill and downhill again ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8295/7773406652_83537ffda1_o.jpg

We found Himalayan Balsam. Those flowers are looking good, but smelling a bit strange.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8429/7773406870_d79cbe109b_o.jpg

Muengsten Bridge came into sight than, overspanning the valley of River Wupper.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7250/7773407188_6d250d18c0_o.jpg

It is really impressing! The bridge is about 480 m wide, 107 m high and was finished in late 19th century. There are extensive repair works going on there at the moment, there aren't any trains crossing the bridge at t he moment.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8431/7773407464_a3f0185f3b_o.jpg

After walking straight uphill for some time we reached the bridge once more, but this time at its abutment!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7266/7773407886_5e51d37549_o.jpg

On our way back home we had to buy a few things.

Remscheid, Germany - 11th August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
another day with fantastic weather :)

We went outside to take a nice walk in the lovely rural outskirts.

I met sheep here, Katja called them "White sock" and "Brown sock".  (She is knitting socks like a maniac :D )

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8298/7773408066_525f9e4514_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8429/7773408374_bcf634a2d4_o.jpg

We were opposite of the city centre than. Here you can see the district Hasten ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8425/7773408604_8882e35257_o.jpg

... and here - in the background - the city centre with the water tower and the city hall tower.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8301/7773408806_02b5365a04_o.jpg

I met those nice girls, we talked a bit about a cow's life in Germany and Scotland.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8431/7773409032_0db2911951_o.jpg

This is a special school where you can learn a lot about nature, the forest, healthy food and so on.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8423/7773409546_7ec22cd40b_o.jpg

We also walked through a forest.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8448/7773409770_2d0f0c2487_o.jpg

Katja showed us this water wheel, reminder of an historic industrial site. Here in this region tools are produced since middle ages.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8286/7773409952_a4197e782c_o.jpg

The historic industrial site is part of a museum.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8306/7773410134_c289660c5f_o.jpg

The coat of arms of Remscheid is incorporated into the fence.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7255/7773410448_f7fa63a687_o.jpg

Bye for now

Hi Mummy,
it is incredibly hot today. We are spending the day inside. We helped our host to  sew curtains for the bedroom.

It was quite easy and soon they were finished.

Sülfeld, Germany - 24th August 2012

Hi Mum,

I arrived in Sülfeld. A nice bunny- called Dicker Kumpel – gave me a warm welcome.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%2012a/G_0746.jpg

Then he introduced me to the other guests here.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%2012a/G_0747.jpg

I showed the nice postcard that olgamaus created.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%2012a/G_0748.jpg

Later we visited Dicker Kumpels Grandma. She had birthday this week – and this is one of her presents.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%2012a/G_0749.jpg

Can you see me between these wonderful flowers?

Hello Mum,

The weather was awful outside, so we decided to explore the house. A horse must have lived here in the Past.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%2012a/G_0770.jpg

I tried to call you, but you were not at home.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%2012a/G_0771.jpg

No wine in this barrel.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/RikeH_2009/A%2012a/G_0772.jpg

Then I played the trumpet or whatever this was.

Sülfeld, Germany - 2nd September 2012

Hello Mum,

On Sunday we made a walk through Sülfeld. This is the old church.

http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb347/HoBi666/Rike/G_0806.jpg

On the other side of the street is the old pharmacy.

http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb347/HoBi666/Rike/G_0807.jpg

Here you can see the emblem of Sülfeld.

http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb347/HoBi666/Rike/G_0815.jpg

Do you understand the words on this big rock?

http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb347/HoBi666/Rike/G_0827.jpg

Behind the rock there is the old school.

http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb347/HoBi666/Rike/G_0828.jpg

Many greetings
Lorca
