München, Germany - 17th February 2008
By: Pandamao
Pandamao had heard that an old high rise building (the former Agfa factory) was to be demolished - with explosives. We went there together to watch. There was already a big crowd of people. At noon the alarm was going off three times .... then we waited ..... nothing happened for a little while (seemed longer than just one or two minutes because we tried to hold up the camera) ... and then there was a bang - before we could push the button on the camera the whole building was gone !!! Boooom - just like that! Just one second was enough, we saw the building lean to one side and boooouuf, it was gone. The camera was too slow to catch it. Later in the evening we watched it in the news.

The weather was sunny but cold. So after the demolishing of the building we went for a walk (together with half of Munich's inhabitants) to Nymphenburg Castle and park.

I had to eat some immediately, what a great taste, first sweet and then the taste of the chilli .... I could not stop and have already finished half of the jellies.

HAPPY EASTER!
Today it's Easter Monday and Pandamao went to this little town in the Oberpfalz to see her dad and she took me along.
We walked along the street and wondered what was going on in that little park opposite. When we came closer we saw that it was an "Easter fountain". In this part of Bavaria it's the custom to decorate the fountains with Easter eggs. There must be hundreds or thousands of eggs here. They really look beautiful.

Walking along the Isar river I found some more graffiti under a bridge. It shows a Bavarian couple painted inside/under the bridge.

If you look closer you can see that the clothes this couple wears show all kind of details, views of Munich, themes connected to Munich, events taking place in Munich ....

I found some more graffiti - but this one looks quite "official". The side of this house has been completey covered with painting.

I did some more sight-seeing today and went to the area where the Hofbräuhaus is located. The first photo shows the Orlando House and then I pose in the front of the nearby Hofbräuhaus. It is a huuuuuuuge beerhall.
I also met some local bears. We had a nice conversation about TVs and traveling the world but the Bavarian bears did not want to join. Seems, that they would miss their Sunday morning beer Stammtisch (regulars' table) at the Hofbräuhaus too much.

Then I took a look at the "Alter Hof", which was the first residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty, built in the 13th century.

München, Germany - 30th March 2008
By: Pandamao
Today I went to the Perlach Cemetery to see the graves of Hans and Sophie Scholl.
But who are they? This is an example of what I found in the internet.
"During Hitler's reign over Germany in the 30's and 40's, few people stood up against him and those who did were quickly snuffed out. The punishment for treason against the Reich was severe and public. Everyone knew what would happen to them if they were caught. But even with the knowledge of what would happen to them, a group of college students called the White Rose (die Weiße Rose) began distributing anti-Hitler flyers around Munich in 1941. They protested against hate; using graffiti and printing leaflets against the Nazis with messages to rebel against Hitler and to stop him. The White Rose distributed their flyers all over the country, mailing them from different cities, leaving them in trains and shops, risking their lives to try to save Germany.
The leaders were in their 20's: Hans Scholl and his sister Sophie, Willi Graf, Alex Schmorell and Christoph Probst. One of their greatest influences was a philosophy professor at the University of Munich, Kurt Huber.
The group had created five leaflets and distributed hundreds of copies of each by February of 1943. That month a high-ranking officer gave a speech at the University of Munich that caused an uproar among the students. The next day Hans and Sophie decided to distribute pamphlets at the university, but were caught by a janitor, who saw them throw flyers from a balcony. In less than a week, Hans, Sophie, and Christoph were tried, convicted, and sent to the guillotine. In the next year, many others in the group followed the same path.
The members of the White Rose possessed bravery that few people have. They gave up their lives rather than live and remain silent when such awful things were going on. Because of their efforts, many average citizens found out more about what was actually going on, and people were encouraged that others thought like they did. Many started doing small things to hinder the Nazis goals. Today there are many schools in Germany named after members of the White Rose, so people can be reminded that anyone can help destroy tyranny."

Heidelberg, Germany - 6th April 2008
By: Pandamao
Just before leaving Munich I had the chance for a short trip to Heidelberg. My host had told me that there is some rugby graffiti and I needed to check it out. And it was true - right next to the Youth Hostel where I was staying there was a rugby club and they had their club walls decorated with rugby graffiti.

Before I leave I took a last walk along the Isar river - and I found some more "under the bridge" graffiti. Hope you like it
I just wonder - is this a kind of modern gargoyle?
