Remscheid, Germany - 29th May 2014
By: olgamaus
Hi Mum,
although the weather is still bad we took a walk in the late morning (we are having a holiday here in Germany). Katja picked up a friend and we went to the "Route of Tools", a former railway track which was built to a lane for pedestrians and cyclists, following the route of the freight trains from the district Hasten to the central station. This lane is about 4,8 km long. Its name refers to the well known tool producing industry of Remscheid, a lot of companies donated money to build this lane. We started our trip in Hasten, one of several historic districts of Remscheid.
You can find a lot of interesting things along the route, also some art work. Pictures like these were created by an artist from Remscheid, Gerd Arntz (1900 - 1988), inventor of the nowadays known modern pictograms.
You can find pictograms painted to the ground and also distance data. This one says that you have to walk four kilometres to the station, the other described places are districts of Remscheid.
Next I found those "stamped" prints of tools on the tarmac.
This house is typical for this region, covered with slate and having green shutters. You can also often find timber-framed houses.
Elderberry is blooming now, there is the special scent of the elderflowers in the air.
More patterns on the ground, wrenches this time.
Here are some signs showing logos of the sponsoring companies ...
... and one showing the coat of arms of Remscheid.
Have a look at the pedestrian light - this green man was used in the former German Democratic Republic. This traffic light is the only one in Remscheid showing this special little man.

Katja told me that there more and more industrial complexes the closer we came to the station. This one was the slaughterhouse once, now the whole complex is under monument protection.
Here you can find a resting area which benches.
Soon we reached the station (not a spectecular sight ). We had to walk uphill for some time to get to the city centre to walk home.
This is a new bridge, connecting the station area with the city.
Large parts of the city centre of Remscheid were destroyed in World War II, but there are still many lovely old houses, usually built in late 19th and early 20th century.
This is the local court, Katja told me.
From we had to walk just a few minutes to get home. As it began to rain again I disappeared into Katja's bag
Bye for today

Wuppertal, Germany - 6th January 2015
By: olgamaus
Hi Mummy,
I am still fine, although we did not take photos while the website was not online.
There are loads of news. The most important one is that we moved from Remscheid to Wuppertal in late August 2014. This was so exciting!
I hope you allow me to stay a bit longer, now that you can follow my adventures again.
Love
Mr. Bear

Wuppertal, Germany - 1st March 2015
By: olgamaus
Hi Mum,
today we took a walk to a lovely landscape park in Wuppertal, the Hardt. But to get there we had to walk for about 20 minutes straight uphill. Here is an overview across the city after leaving our apartment.
This was my first impression of the Hardt, which is a ridge within the Wupper valley, about 230 m high.
Once again we took Jule with us, our neighbour's dog.
We strolled around the park then.
There are also greenhouses, which unfortunately are not open for visitors before April. The tower is Elise Tower, I will tell you more about it later.
There is also the Botanical Garden located on the Hardt. You are not allowed to take dogs with you into this garden, so we had to stay out (Katja told me that is was not that spectecular this time of year, we'd better visit it in April when there will already blooming flowers).
The garden dates to 1890 when a botanical school garden was first created on a smaller terrain. Between 1908-1910 it relocated to today's site, the Villa of a textile manufactor named Eller, a former country house which contained a villa (built 1820), orangery, residential and farm buildings. Elise Tower was built in 1838 A.D. as the garden's focal point.
At least we found some crocus, usually the first flowers blooming in late winter in Germany.
We walked back to the city then. We came along a church ...
... and a large intersection. A sculpture of the British sculptor Tony Cragg is placed here. Tony Cragg has its own sculpture park in Wuppertal, we walked along it when we took the dog to the forest earlier. Katja promised that we would visit the sculpture park in April or May.
Narrow streets in the city!
This is the Schwebebahn station "Kluse", not far from my current home.
And once again the Schwebebahn. I like it
Bye for today
