Wuppertal, Nordbahntrasse, Germany - 19th April 2015
By: olgamaus
Hi Mommy,
today we went to "Nordbahntrasse", this former rail trail I already showed you last summer. Today a festival was taking place along the trail, all along the length of nearly 23 km (about 14 miles) you could find bands playing music, all kinds of food, activities for kids etc.
It was very crowded between the former stations.
In the district Barmen you have a great overview across the city from a high railway bridge.
You can find all kinds of housing areas along the track and as well industrial sites.
This "playground" is created for larger kids, for practising parkour. Do you know this sport? Climbing and jumpring across walls, fences, trees, cars and whatever you can find.
A new housing area is being built here, with mostly one family houses.
We left the rail trail at its currend ending and walked back though the city. Katja showed me some really lovely houses.
Can you see the bridge in the next picture? This is the bridge which I crossed before.
After walking nearly three hours we fell into bed early
Bye

Duesseldorf, Germany - 11th July 2015
By: olgamaus
Hi Mum,
today I visited Duesseldorf.
Duesseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is situated on the River Rhine, and is renowned for its many events and also for its fashion and trade fairs. We went here by train and started our trip in the city centre. We came past the Koenigsallee, the most famous shopping street here,(and the most expensive one ), famous for the fashion showrooms and luxury retail stores located along its sides.
A new business quarter was built at the end of the alley with a transition to an already existing park.
We walked through the old town ...
... towards river Rhine.
Have a look at the fantastic skyline with Rhine Tower and Media Harbor in the distance.
A museum is located in this tower, "Schlossturm".
We walked back to the old town where Katja showed me the city hall.
The narrow streets were crowded with people.
The lion is the heraldic animal of Duesseldorf.
We went back to river Rhine and walked towards Rhine Tower and Media Harbor. Now old town and Schlossturm can be seen in the background.
This is the state parliament.
Here you can see Rhine Tower, opened in 1982, 240 m tall. Rhine Tower is a telecommunications tower with a rotatable restaurant and an observation deck.
Close to the tower the harbor is situated. This part of the harbor is called Medienhafen (Media Harbor). For decades the harbor has been an area of workers, industry and trade. After the Mannesmann company had discontinued its tube production in Düsseldorf, parts of the central harbor were no longer needed. As a result the eastern part of the harbour started to be redeveloped. Nowadays you can find media companies, but also fashion and design offices here, lots of gastronomy also. You can find some spectacular post-modern architecture, most famously three twisted constructions by Frank Gehry, here.
A marina can also be found here.
Can you see the climbing figures on one of the buildings on the next picture? Each of them is about 4,20m tall and 2,60 m wide.
Once more the state parliament, the main entrance on the opposite side this time.
After walking in the sun for hours we were really happy to take the train home
Bye
