Miami, Florida, USA - 2nd April 2008

I went on a nature hike today with Cool Jules and Yum Yum at Matheson Hammock Park.  The nature trails were a little spooky, but cool!

Here we are sitting on a log:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2105/2384232322_d7a57891ff.jpg

We had to climb over this big boulder so we could continue down the trail:

We found a little cave!

Shark Valley, Everglades, USA - 5th April 2008

By: carlissa

Today I went on a 15-mile bike ride with Cool Jules and Yum Yum through Shark Valley in the Everglades.

We stopped at Otter Cave nature trail and I read a sign:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2074/2391119256_3bc82f3f45.jpg

and we looked into some holes in the rock which had water underneath:

Here I am looking at the Everglades:

We stopped at this observation tower and had lunch:

Miami, Florida, USA - 12th April 2008

Cool Jules and I had planned on going to the beach today, but it's raining!
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2383/2408378848_0534da03ef.jpg

Prince Charming could tell that we were very disappointed, so he offered to read us a story.  He read Once Upon a Time in the North by Philip Pullman.  What a great story!  It's about an aeronaut who meets a polar bear in the North Pole and they have a grand adventure together.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3044/2407545991_2c84dabf70.jpg

We found a game in the back of the book, so we decided to play it.  The game is called Perils of the Pole - sounds exciting!

Coral Gables, Florida, USA - 19th April 2008

By: carlissa

Today our host took Cool Jules and me for a bike ride down Old Cutler Road, which is in a very beautiful section of town.  Our bike ride started at Cartagena Circle where we saw a pair of giant shoes!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2012/2426223098_7dd3e050fc.jpg

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3042/2425410275_e03d06d096.jpg

Nearby we saw a pretty little canal:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2071/2425411975_092d2aafd0.jpg

Then we got on the bike and rode down Old Cutler Road until we got to the beach at Matheson Hammock Park where we stopped for lunch.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2415/2425410889_b69584f4c1.jpg

After lunch, we walked over to see Biscayne Bay and we could see downtown Miami in the distance.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3129/2426223748_a2b5a8d5a4.jpg

And we climbed up this mangrove tree that was growing in the water!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3098/2425411265_930184494f.jpg

After enjoying the beach for awhile, we decided to continue our bike ride.  We found this little cemetery in the middle of a residential area!  We read a sign there that said it was one of the oldest cemeteries in the area.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3198/2425411825_0f946f0edd.jpg

I was little scared to go into the cemetery, but Cool Jules thought it would be fun to look around.  It was a pretty little cemetery.  We found a gravestone of someone who was in the Civil War and he died over a hundred years ago!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3230/2425411689_4c3b8b5891.jpg

After that we rode back to the car and came home.

Miami, Florida, USA - 20th April 2008

This morning I got up early to watch the Sunrise Balloon Race!  The hot air balloon race started yesterday and finished up today.  The finish line was at the Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport, which is close to where my host lives.  So, Cool Jules and I set up a lawn chair outside to watch the balloons go by.

Here comes the balloons!

Key Biscayne, Florida, USA - 26th April 2008

By: carlissa

Today our host took Cool Jules and me to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park

We took a picnic lunch, so we decided to eat first.  We shared a Cuban sandwich and some Fritos.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2250/2443188055_e029dc3948.jpg

After lunch, we went to see the lighthouse.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2089/2444015660_9ffaf157b8.jpg

Here we are sitting on a brick wall with the old top of the lighthouse in the background.  The lighthouse is made from bricks and then whitewashed!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3070/2443188565_2db4d771ed.jpg

Then we read a sign about the lighthouse.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3281/2443190859_b09003c60a.jpg

Our host asked if we wanted to go to the top of the lighthouse, and, of course, we said yes!  We had to climb 109 steps to get to the top!  Whew! what a climb!
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3086/2443188667_f4ce409892.jpg

We had to stop about halfway to rest and look out this window.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3203/2443188745_a5e865e6aa.jpg

The view from the top was spectacular (and a little scary because we were on a tiny catwalk on the outside of the lighthouse).  Here is the view of the beach from the top:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2047/2444016136_35b12aaaa0.jpg

And the view of the lighthouse keeper's house:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2098/2443189153_4762b907c9.jpg

And the view of the end of Cape Florida and the Atlantic Ocean:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2043/2444016710_12b06e2549.jpg

Then we climbed down and went to see the lighthouse keeper's house, which has been made into a museum.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2223/2443189709_1f6ac570af.jpg

Here is the cistern the lighthouse keeper used to collect rainwater:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2040/2443190377_175240ec2e.jpg

We went inside the house and we signed the guest register.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2365/2444017830_c32ff421dd.jpg

Outside again, we found this base marker.  What is it for?
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2154/2443189903_c1415ac7a9.jpg

Someone was nice enough to put a sign nearby that told about the base marker.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2269/2443190263_1f1a89f92e.jpg

After all the walking around, we rested on this bench for awhile.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3027/2443191059_09dfd010b2.jpg

Then we went to the beach and played in the sand for awhile.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2004/2443191191_d1aa08a01e.jpg

Wow, what a fun day we had!

Jimbo the Elephant arrived a couple days ago, and I invited him to dinner and a movie.

We had Cuban-style picadillo and rice for dinner:

After dinner, we watched The Golden Compass:

We enjoyed the movie very much!  Afterwards, I introduced him to Snowshoe, the cat and we had a nice chat:

Snowshoe gave me a kiss!

Today is Mother's Day!  We got up early to make banana pancakes for our host.

First, we gathered all the ingredients that we will need:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2226/2482323013_c5cb35a35e.jpg

We mixed up the batter and then cooked the pancakes in a pan.  The pancakes turned out to be very delicious!

Today I went to downtown Miami with Decker, Jimbo Elephant, and Jadzia Tam.  We stopped at Bayside Marketplace and Bayfront Park.

I saw a candy shop at Bayside called the Sweet Factory!  My host told me it was too early in the morning for candy, so we didn't go in.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3163/2491334132_62ab1c3981.jpg

After window shopping at Bayside, we went to Bayfront Park which was next to Bayside.  I forgot all about the candy store when I saw some of the big buildings in  downtown Miami:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2038/2491333528_35d72c6728.jpg

And I saw a statue of Christopher Columbus:

Here I am with Decker, Jimbo Elephant, and Jadzia Tam enjoying the sunshine and pretty view:

I went to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull this afternoon with Dilbert, Jimbo Elephant, and HitchaRideDooey.  We all enjoyed the movie - lots of action Indy style,  Soviet agents, creepy skeletons, and cute ground hogs!

After the movie, we met this girl who was playing outside of the theater:
