I've got lots of photos of me and the forth road bridge but fiona says that she will put them on later as she is on the wrong computer!!

Remscheid, Germany - 14th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hello Mummy,
in the afternoon we visited Katja's aunt who is also living in the city centre, about 30 minutes to walk from my current home. The sun was shining, so we went afoot.

I am living in this pretty house at the moment. Our apartment is in the attic storey with a nice view.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2574/4011803323_337008a1ee.jpg

Close to my home you can find the local court. It's the large building in the background.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2223/4012571464_76775e15d5.jpg

We than walked along the "Trasse des Werkzeugs" (Route of Tools) which is a lane for pedestrians and cyclists. It was built on a closed railway track. This route is about 5 km long, starting at the central station and going to a district called "Hasten". You can walk through the city here without getting into contact with traffic very often. Katja really likes  this route.

This route was sponsored by local tool procuding companies. Remscheid is famous for its tool producing and metalworking industry.  Along the route you can find some artworks and interesting historical sites. We started here, close to the former slaughterhouse. This building complex is under monumental protection, containing offices, service companies and crafts enterprises.

Here is a piece of artwork: A bench which was built of the axis of a waterwheel and railway sleepers.

Here are some signs showing the logos of some of the sponsoring companies.

Here is a nice place for a rest.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3501/4011804743_5f32979f14.jpg

Sometimes you can find distance data painted to the ground.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2564/4011804073_14f417e0a7.jpg

Some houses were built really close to the railway track.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2644/4011804175_cc5dd7223d.jpg

We are close to the central station now. Here you have lots of large factory buildings.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2632/4012572336_af3defc80d.jpg

On this map you can see the course of the Trasse des Werkzeugs.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3486/4011804327_c4347050c7.jpg

In the background you can see the recently re-opened central station. A new one was built here for more than two years.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2472/4012572682_9709e16f1d.jpg

The place on the next picture is also part of the new built central station area.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2658/4011803227_04f1193b6d.jpg

We had a coffe with Katja's aunt and talked for an hour. Than it was time to walk back home, enjoying the nice weather.

Cuxhaven, Germany - 17th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we are on our way to Heligoland, or in German: Helgoland.

We are in Cuxhaven now, we just entered the ship to Helgoland.

The tower in the background belongs to the central station, but I am on board of the "Atlantis". Landroval is also coming with Katja's sister Ina and her family.

Heligoland, Germany - 18th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
greetings from Helgoland! I prefer the German writing :D

Helgoland is a German archipelago in the North Sea. They are the only German islands not in the immediate vicinity of the mainland and are approximately three hours' sailing time from Cuxhaven at the mouth of the River Elbe, in the southeastern corner of the North Sea. We came here by boat from Cuxhaven.

Helgoland consists of two islands: the populated triangular 1 km2 (0.4 sq mi) main island to the west and the dune to the east. The main island is commonly divided into the Unterland ("Lower Land") at sea level, the Oberland ("Upper Land), consisting of the plateau.

Today I make a trip to the neighbour island, the Dune. The trip leasts only 10 minutes. On the Dune they have only few holiday homes, a small airport, a camping site, lots of sand and seals and grey seals.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2455/4057909455_a1a50d5deb_o.jpg

This is our wooden friend in front of the "Dunes"-restaurant.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2594/4057909587_2b0eb4e506_o.jpg

This stone seal seems to have waited just for me.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2593/4058649718_32fb3fea0e_o.jpg

A beach chair just for the two of us.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2550/4057909943_e2446e99ec_o.jpg

I need a rest. It is really exhausting to walk in the sand.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2778/4057910299_bf35928cd3_o.jpg

Even more sand on the Dune.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2546/4057910467_61cc464fd6_o.jpg

That was a nice trip today.

Hi Mummy,

here I am on the way from the Lower Land to the Upperland.  In the background you can see the Dune.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2656/4058648594_026ba8f2b8_o.jpg

The world belongs to ToyVoyagers!!! This teddy bear is Ina's bear Verdi.

I am safe on the wave-breaker.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2708/4058648864_940b133cdf_o.jpg

This is the "Hermann Marwede", the largest cruiser of  the DGzRS, (Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger) in English known as the German Lifeboat Institution, which is responsible for Search and Rescue in German territorial waters in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, including the Exclusive Economic Zone.  The home port of this ship is Helgoland. The DGzRS is entirely financed by membership fees, private donations and legacies.

Remscheid, Germany - 28th October 2009

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in the city centre of Remscheid.

Here you can see me next to the city hall.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2698/4072156519_c61b2c6bd5_o.jpg

This is the water tower, from here the residents of the city centre are supplied with drinking water. The water is pumped up to this hill from a dam in a valley.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2764/4072918770_34e6d2410c_o.jpg

I like those pretty coloured trees!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2602/4072918984_a53b7f5208_o.jpg

This is the rear side of the shopping mall with the car park.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2596/4072918860_50a0ddfc5c_o.jpg

This is one of Katja's favourite shops, for pet supplies. Unfortunately they don't have anything for hippos.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2489/4072156847_9051fbbddb_o.jpg

In the afternoon we went to a district called "Hasten", a very old district. Here they have many pretty old houses, also this church, which is usually hidden behind the trees.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2563/4072918256_4362ab6cd6_o.jpg

On the next photo you can see that Remscheid is surrounded by green and woodland.
