Verona, Italy - 22nd December 2009
By: smaug
Hi Mum,
Today I was supposed to fly to Canada, but due to the adverse weather here in Italy the airport was shut down until late morning and lot of flights were cancelled, including mine . As you can imagine the departure area was absolute mayhem (the airport was closed most of yesterday too), so to find some peace, while waiting to get at least a flight to Frankfurt (where I was supposed to get the connection to Calgary), I went with Sigfrido to check the arrivals terminal where there was no one around a plenty of seating available .
Eventually, late in the evening, I managed to board a flight to Germany and, hopefully, tomorrow I’ll fly to Canada .

Calgary, Canada - 23rd December 2009
By: smaug
Hi Mum,
today I eventually arrived in Canada. sammino, who is a stay-at-home TV, came greeting me at the airport and then introduced me to all the other guests. There is Ronnie from Spain, Lysander from the UK, Nathalie, Henry-Bo and Lucy K are from Germany like me, Mortimer_ comes from Greece and Hedgie is visiting from Australia.
Later, since I was very tired from the trip, I was offered some Timbits to help me recovering a bit and all the others decided that I needed some help eating them .

Calgary, Canada - 3rd January 2010
By: smaug
Hi Mum!
Today we were all a bit sad as three TVs are leaving Calgary. Ronnie and Lysander are going back home in Spain and UK, while Henry-Bo is moving to his next host in Hong Kong.
So we all gathered together to wish them a safe journey .

Lake Minnewanka, Canada - 9th January 2010
By: smaug
Hi Mum!
Over the last couple of days temperatures here in Calgary crept over freezing point for the first time in weeks, it was really nice and warm ! To take advantage of this unexpected spell of summerish weather, today we went for a hike around Lake Minnewanka...where temperatures were not that summerish at all .
On the way to the lake we met the elks .
Apparently they are often at this spot along the road, we decided that they are probably paid by the park tourist board to attract tourists , but they are cute, aren’t they?
As you can see the lake was nicely frozen...
...and the path wasn’t in much better condition.
At one point we had to cross this frozen stream that looked quite slippery...
...and the little bridge crossing it didn’t give us much more confidence.
But somehow we got across, and ended up at this junction where we found this sign: grizzly bears ! I wish that I could meet one...they are not white bears, but still relatives they are .
Unfortunately Smaug said that we were not entering that area today and, anyway, all the bears were likely to be asleep for winter. Eventually we reached our destination, a bend in the lake about 10km from the parking lot.
Here you can see the “beach” behind me,
The lake looking upstream...
...and downstream.
Everything was frozen or covered with snow. On the way back it was getting a bit darker so we didn’t take any more photos.

Hi Mum!
Today we said goodbye to one of the guests here. Nathalie is moving to her next host in Russia so we all gathered together to wish her a safe journey .
Maybe I’ll meet her again somewhere around the world .
