Milton, Australia - 13th September 2010

By: emo_kid

Hi Mum
It rained all weekend, so we didn't go into the city, but I will; I'll make sure it happens...

Rosario arrived from San Diego today...

When we got home i met Atila & Maximus
Later we had a look at pictures for tattoos that emo_kid will get
Then we all had a group hug with Itci

emo_kid walks to work everyday, and passes a primary school. Out the front they have these Giant Pencils
and someone has painted the side of the toilet block
How cool is that?

Unfortuantly it's supposed to rain all this weekend as well, but apparently we're all going to help punk_boi fix his car...

Brisbane, Australia - 24th September 2010

By: emo_kid

Hi Mum

OMG, we finally got to go into the city... So exciting.
Here's me on the bus going in
We walked around for a bit and found this cool looking church. There are heaps of churches in the city.
This is city hall. We weren't allowed to go inside, but here's some interesting information about it.
"City hall was erected between 1920 and 1930 and is heritage listed. The sandstone-faced building features a finely detailed main entrance topped by a 92 metre clock tower. It is currently undergoing renovations."
This is the Treasury Building, formerly the Queensland Government Treasury Building, but now it is the Treasury Casino. It was built between 1886 and 1928 in three stages. It is Located at the end of Queen st Mall. There’s accommodation and of course, gambling, so naturally we weren’t allowed in.
Next we found some Kangaroo’s… They’re not real kangaroos though; they’re made out of scrap metal.
Then we met Adrian Burragubba, a native aboriginal, who busks in the Queen st mall. He’s been doing it for the past 16 years, and has even fought the government over aboriginal wages. He comes from a community in central Queensland. We didn’t want to disturb his music, so we had a group photo with him. He sits on genuine Kangaroo skin and plays the didgeridoo and clapsticks. He is dressed in traditional aboriginal dress and body paint. We were all nervous, but it was so interesting and unlike anything ive heard before.
Next we stumbled across “The Drovers”. They were originally created as part of Expo ’88, and were part of a series of 80 sculptures displaying people in everyday situations in Australia. In 1989 they were purchased by Department if Primary Industries and installed in there present location, out the front of the Department if Primary Industries building on Ann st. In 2005, they were re-created in cast aluminium to preserve them for generations to come. The drovers represent the old swagmen around a camp fire.
We found this really interesting statue of a man on horseback, giving a lady water and food, with lots of children standing around. I’m not sure what it all means, but they look cool.
Next we saw this, it’s an old Servants home, which was built in 1865 and bought in 1873 by the Brisbane School of Arts. Here’s some information about it.
Although it wasn’t very interesting inside, as it’s being used as an art gallery / coffee shop now, we got to sign the guest book.
Sadly it was then time to go back to work. Here we are on the train.
Im exhausted now, so im going to sleep.

Milton & Paddington, Australia - 19th October 2010

By: emo_kid

Hi Mum

Well the following are bits and pieces from over the last few days. The rain just wont go away, so we haven't been out much. :(

On the way home the other day, we found a rat. He wasn't to healthy so we gave him some water. He survived :)
And I had to have my photo taken with this Ferrari we spotted

On Sunday was emo_kids birthday. She only has punk_boi here, so not many presents, and we just had a quiet one at home.

The roller derby got cancelled, but emo_kid made me a dress

Today there were 2 packages waiting for us.
The first was Sweet Mimi
And the next was Miguel
This is Miguel's first trip :)

Well bye for now,

Love Nursy

Sydney, Australia - 22nd October 2010

By: becka_kate

Wow! That didn't take long at all - I'm in Sydney, and luckily have arrived just in time for the weekend!

Sydney, Australia - 24th October 2010

By: becka_kate

Well, the weather this weekend was shocking - stormy on Saturday and rainy all day Sunday, so we were stuck at home  :(

Bec read in my missions that I would like to see the Norweigian fjords one day. A few years ago she travelled around Europe and visited Gerainger Fjord on her way to Nordkapp to see the midnight sun, so she shared her photos and experiences with me. I really hope I get to go there one day too!

Sydney, Australia - 2nd November 2010

By: becka_kate

Here's why I've been 'missing' for a while.
The weather has continued to be horrible and my host has been sick! We're hoping for an improvement in both areas soon.

Sydney Airport, Australia - 6th November 2010

By: becka_kate

It's raining, it's pouring... but we're off to Sydney Airport for the Staff Open Day, celebrating QANTAS's 90th Birthday.

IMG_7022 by becka_kate, on Flickr

Who wants to check out the planes, get out of the rain and maybe see the cockpit? Me!!
IMG_7023 by becka_kate, on Flickr

Do you recognise this plane's symbol? QANTAS is Australia's national airline and has the world's best safety record (despite the eventsof the last week!)  It is Australia's largest airline and the world's second oldest continuously operating airline.

These things are HUGE!
IMG_7035 by becka_kate, on Flickr

It was a long wait to get into the cockpit, so I took some time to read and enjoy Business Class.
IMG_7030 by becka_kate, on Flickr

WooHoo! The sun came out!
You might be wondering why we're at the Staff Open Day? Bec's sister works for QANTAS in that building over there.
IMG_7052 by becka_kate, on Flickr

Guess who's plane this is?!?!?!?
IMG_7037 by becka_kate, on Flickr

Do you know?
It's John Travolta's!!
He's an Ambassador for QANTAS and flew out to Australia, despite the baby being due in a couple of weeks, to help celebrate their birthday.

IMG_7077 by becka_kate, on Flickr

Here's the Lockheed Constellation. Can you believe that people use to fly from Sydney to London on this? It was called the Kangaroo Route, and carried 29 passengers and 11 crew from Sydney to London, with stopovers in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo and Tripoli (passengers would stay overnight in Singapore and Cairo), taking a little over three days. Now, you can do this in 23 hours, with just one stopover. (And that's tiring and uncomfortable enough! - Bec)
IMG_7055 by becka_kate, on Flickr

We decided against seeing the A380, as it was a 2hr wait to get inside
IMG_7063 by becka_kate, on Flickr

and went to see the Royal Flying Doctors aircraft instead, something I found much more interesting.
IMG_7065 by becka_kate, on Flickr

The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia began in 1928 and is an emergency and primary health care service for people living in rural, remote and regional areas of Australia. It is a not-for-profit organisation which provides health care to people who are unable to access a hospital or general practice due to the huge distances of the Outback - often the closest medical services can be hours and hours of driving away.

Big rain clouds coming in... Time to head home!
