Remscheid, Germany - 28th June 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

we went to a DIY-store today, we had to look for wall paint and other things. We went there in Katja's lunch break. Because the weather was really great, we took a walk to the DIY-store through the city centre. First Katja showed us the entrance area of the shopping mall, Allee-Center. There is a large fountain in front of it.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7112/7462022052_30015e463c_o.jpg

When we reached the end of the shopping street Katja showed us another fountain, a very colorful one with funny water games.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8168/7462022330_c5c43602f0_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7113/7462022592_8c14458163_o.jpg

Oh dear, this area does not look so nice ... Katja told me that DIY-stores often were situated on industrial estates and those often do not look to nice.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8028/7462023712_2c8210eebe_o.jpg

Here we looked for wall paint.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8153/7462024244_aeed60848a_o.jpg

On our way back we came along the station area, it was built about three years ago, a bridge for pedestrians was opened last year.

This is the new bridge. Cyclists and pedestrias can now reach the city centre much faster than before when they had to cross severeal streets to get there.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7277/7462017890_5d04a2f32c_o.jpg

On our way back to the office we bought a few things for lunch, we were starving!

Remscheid, Germany - 30th June 2012

Hi Mummy,

today we started to paint the walls in Katja's new apartement.

After protecting the edge of the ceiling and the  washboards we started to paint her favourite colour in the bedroom.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8006/7481174360_b464bcaa9d_o.jpg

We even managed to paint the wall without getting terribly dirty :D

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8024/7481174844_fc1cb59bcd_o.jpg

That's all for today, a load of work was waiting for us!

Remscheid, Germany - 22nd July 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we moved to my host's new apartment last weekend. Still there is not everything fixed and finished, tools are still everywhere :)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8151/7635929246_3d9daa5e0e_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7132/7635929582_eb6b94751d_o.jpg

Nontheless we took a walk in the late morning because the weather finally became better after two extremely rainy weeks. We went to the outskirts in the West of Remscheid.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7121/7635931200_0519c3ec49_o.jpg

It did not take long until we reached a forest.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8141/7635934328_420e4cae92_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7251/7635934924_be4f2744b3_o.jpg

Walking downhill we reached a creek which is flowing in the valley.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7110/7635937362_d977a7de16_o.jpg

Here we found hogweed, a plant which originally came from Eastern countries, from the Caucasus mountains. Although it looks pretty people do not like it. Its sap causes phytophotodermatitis on human skin.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8152/7635938512_78f70b7d12_o.jpg

Can you see the markings for hiking trails on the tree? The encircled "R" stands for a hiking trail around the municipal area of Remscheid, about 63 km long.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7138/7635940668_9f776c82ed_o.jpg

At home a lot of work was waiting for us, so we went back home.

Wuppertal, Germany - 25th July 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we went to Wuppertal again to visit the Botanical garden there. Unfortunately the "Schwebebahn" is closed due to repair works.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8434/7645655072_9138f485f4_o.jpg

The Botanical garden is situated on a hilled called "Hardt", we had to climb umpteen stairs to get there.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8164/7645655298_d9f3b5a9f8_o.jpg

The closer we came to the Botanical garden the more lovely were the dwellings, mostly beautiful mansions.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8017/7645655536_1d13fe69e4_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7274/7645655884_bc55eefd0c_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7249/7645656186_cc5ca1a3e5_o.jpg

You can find the former country house of a textile manufacturers named Eller, which contained a villa (built 1820), orangery, residential and farm buildings, and the Elise Tower (built 1838) which provides the garden's focal point.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8434/7645657164_b128dca55a_o.jpg

We saw different kinds of gardens, like this rockery...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8141/7645657380_9d14a8ce8c_o.jpg

... and different flowers.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8021/7645657698_eb2f3a2c3b_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8018/7645658952_039219d690_o.jpg

Here are Echinacea, also known as Purple coneflowers, a medicinal herb.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8149/7645658280_48d7998220_o.jpg

Here you can see  Elise Tower once more.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8424/7645658014_d460cb6ccb_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8016/7645669520_218b8abe81_o.jpg

These are Angel's trumpets, originally from South America. Angel's trumpets are beautiful flowers, but extremely poisonous.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8148/7645658472_6b761d23ab_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7133/7645658748_2ff3883b6a_o.jpg

There is also a pond in the Botanical garden.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7129/7645659244_85c7aef021_o.jpg

We rested in the shade of this Phoenix plant.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8145/7645672062_93954115e6_o.jpg

We also had a look at the greenhouses in the entrance area. We found bananas here :)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8430/7645659642_d107584f6f_o.jpg

There is an exhibition with butterfly sculptures.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7271/7645659886_fbf0869290_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8149/7645660074_0fe3e31433_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8153/7645660298_cda26fef0f_o.jpg

Later we went to the city centre to pick up Katja's daughter from her work place in a restaurant. On our way there we saw this great fountain in front of the city hall.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8161/7645660536_1fb87dd68b_o.jpg

We had a large ice cream and went home than.

Remscheid, Germany - 3rd August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in the district Hasten, one of the historic districts- You can find lots of lovely old traditional houses here. This one is a beautiful one, although not a traditional "Bergisches" house.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7273/7719577346_69fc916599_o.jpg

A museum is situated in this Patrician villa, built in late 18th century.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8423/7719577628_ab982c5971_o.jpg

The "German Tool Museum" is situated on the the same estate.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7270/7719578004_f964c4edb6_o.jpg

Hasten is situated close to woodland, you can already see it.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7257/7719578278_4191d07b57_o.jpg

These houses, covered with slate and with green shutters, are traditional houses.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7267/7719578552_8939f5b2af_o.jpg

We found this large machine for wood processing.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8427/7719578892_374e1a6719_o.jpg

Katja showed us the cemetary when we went back home.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8433/7719579252_52f72d801a_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7248/7719579586_e4fa94fe12_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8289/7719579916_e5b0a1f9f7_o.jpg

We reached the city centre after walking uphill for some time. In the background the tower of the city hall is visible.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7120/7719580314_c1b2d42a13_o.jpg

And here you can see where I am living at the moment. My host moved to the house on the right side last month, to the second floor. From inside we have a good view to the park opposite of the houses. Even in the backyard there is a large lawn with old trees.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8159/7719580678_697cd7739f_o.jpg

That's all for now )

Remscheid, Germany - 9th August 2012

By: olgamaus

The weather became much better until noon. In the afternoon we took a walk with one of Katja's friends in the outskirts of Remscheid, often rural areas. This one also, with meadows and horses, lovely gardens and lots of nice landscape.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8434/7773400712_a932ba2425_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8436/7773400966_9acf95d7d3_o.jpg

From here we walked towards river Wupper. Along the path we found some rocks with engraved boardgames, Nine Men's Morris here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8438/7773343484_44f4139a0a_o.jpg

I recognized the path .... I have been here before. This path is leading to Muengsten Bridge, along river Wupper.

Himalayan Balsam is growing everywhere.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7268/7773401138_9e3b7c4136_o.jpg

This time we walked uphill to the abutment of the bridge on Remscheid's side of the valley. This path is not very common, like Katja told us. We had a great view into the bridge from here.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8292/7773401370_630ed105f5_o.jpg

This was a very interesting trip.

Remscheid, Germany - 11th August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk in the outskirts in the Northern part of the city, closer to Wuppertal. Here are also lovely rural districts.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8441/7773401658_ddbb06a7e4_o.jpg

When we walked through an area with pasture on both sides we had a good look to the district Hasten ...

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8421/7773401868_70cce4b811_o.jpg

... and to the city centre in the background of the photo, with the two towers of city hall and water tower.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8422/7773402094_b46a67d702_o.jpg

We reached a very special school than, "Naturschule Grund". You can learn a lot about nature here, next weekend they are offering a "spider walk" for kids, they can learn about spiders than. (Does anybody want to know anything about SPIDERS?)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8426/7773402352_df2226c0e5_o.jpg

We walked through the forest than.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8303/7773402570_6e143b1682_o.jpg

Katja showed us a water wheel, it belongs to a museum. You can find the remains of many water wheels along the rivers and creeks around Remscheid. Remscheid has an age-long history in tool producing industry, from middle ages on. All the smithies were run by water wheels.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7259/7773402772_89f54408cc_o.jpg

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8308/7773402988_9fd9f8045c_o.jpg

The coat of arms of Remscheid is worked into the fence of the museum.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8444/7773403176_43f5803705_o.jpg

From here, deep in the valley, we had to walk uphill for about half an hour to get home.

Hi Mummy,
it is incredibly hot today. We are spending the day inside. We helped our host to  sew curtains for the bedroom.

It was quite easy and soon they were finished.

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 22nd August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
my host is a knitting maniac and she made her first attempt in dyeing yarn, with a procedure called "solar dyeing".

You put the yarn and several ingredients like plants, flowers etc into a large jar, add water and alum .... and place it into the sun. As my host does not has a garden, she put the jar onto the window sill. Last week it was extremely hot so t here already was a visible result.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8283/7843224308_b88d6eccbb_o.jpg

There are blackberries, hydrangea and juniper berries as dyeing stuff. We were really exited how the yarn would look.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7262/7843225124_17d6caa6ba_o.jpg

There is also another jar "boiling" in the sun, filled with several sorts of tea and curcuma.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7127/7843224646_f3bf4dcb68_o.jpg

We took the hank out of the glass. The blackberries made a fantastic colour, but t he flowers did not. There is a purple part and sort of dingy cream colour.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8435/7843225856_448917f538_o.jpg

Than the colour had to be fixed. The yarn had to be heated in the microwave oven for two minutes twice. Therefore we wrapped it into plastic wrap.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8282/7843226452_26bf4e6518_o.jpg

Afterwards the yarn had to cool down and than it was washed and hang to dry. Katja promised to make a shawlette for me with this yarn.

Remscheid-Luettringhausen, Germany - 27th August 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we took a walk today in the district Luettringhusen, when we took Katja's friend's son to his soccer training. Luettringhausen is one of the historic districts, embedded in lovely landscape. We started in the town centre. Here is one of two churches.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7116/7874760480_8c8babb864_o.jpg

We walked along a rural area with meadows than.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8441/7874760820_048006472e_o.jpg

There are a few houses hidden in the valley.

travelling to, Emden, Germany - 13th September 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
Katja's colleague Elke invited me to accompany her on a short vacation trip to the North Sea. That's great!

Here we are on our way to ... can you read it? ... Emden at the North Sea coast.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7246/8074600676_737c61b63a_o.jpg

Elke is taking part in a skittles club trip. She and her friends are having lots of fun (and lots of sparkling wine :) ).

Haseluenne, Germany - 13th September 2012

By: olgamaus

In the meantime we reached a place called Haseluenne. We visited the Berentzen factory here, a famous producer of spirituous beverages.

Huh ... the photoflash nearly killed me :) Here you can see historic items produced here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7121/8074600926_8c2a7117fa_o.jpg

This is one of several dining halls here, you can hire it for your own parties.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7126/8074605337_2aeaae713a_o.jpg

Finally the best part of the factory tour came: Tasting, tasting and more tasting.  Testing the different spirits in great profusion - everything which is produced here :D

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7126/8074605619_39bec4aa52_o.jpg

The different spirits are also available in the outlet.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7126/8074636105_fbc5b4e070_o.jpg

Later ...

Oh dear, this was nearly knocking me off. An elephant was crawling through the wall! (Was this due to the alcohol?)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7130/8074601928_ee310763ce_o.jpg

That's all for today :) I think I will sleep a bit longer tomorrow.

Hi Mummy,
today I packed my things and hopped into my envelope. I am now on my way to Italy.

Like my host promised, she knitted a shwalette from the solar-dyed yarn for me. Now winter can come (and still some updates from my holiday trip with Elke).

Oulx, Italy - 24th October 2012

Hi Mummy!

Great news: I finally landed in Italy! :)

I couldn't wait to came out of the envelope, I had to stay there for a few days... then I finally saw a little light and a voice...

"Hello there!"

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a2cf25b3127ccef1dc5648f88b00000030O00AaOGTVw0aOGgPbz4Y/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

It was Gaspode, the little dog, who welcomed me! :) I introduced myself to him and to my new host Francy, and gave them the beatiful postcard an the sweets I got in Germany -they looked very happy! :)

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a2cf25b3127ccef1dc53deb88700000030O00AaOGTVw0aOGgPbz4Y/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

I was right on time for breakfast and I actually was a bit hngry after travelling so long, so I gladly accepted a cup of coffee and a snack

Then Gaspode showed me a little around, there still is a nice weather and flowers here, so it's nice to relax outside!

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a2cf25b3127ccef1dca5c1b8e300000030O00AaOGTVw0aOGgPbz4Y/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

It was quite warm, so I decided to take my new scarf off, at least inside home...
Later, Francy got some chestnuts, so we helped her preparing them to be roasted...

http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a2cf25b3127ccef1dd24f9d84f00000030O00AaOGTVw0aOGgPbz4Y/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D550/ry%3D400/

and of course, we also helped her eating them after dinner! ;)

We could came out after a while, when we were safe and confy on a train.

The journey was quite long, I guess we stayed on that train for 4 or 5 hours...

As Trifolo and I never met before, he introduced himself briefly.

He says he's a famous one in Italy, a real VIP. I wasn't really bound to believe him, but then he showed us he's on chocolates packages as well, so maybe he really is an important testimonial here around... We checked it closely and it's undoubtfully him... I'm still not fully convinced though...

When we finally arrived, Francy told us she had something to do that night, so we just stayed in our room.  :(

Luckily, she gave us a guidebook about our tomorrow trip: we're going to visit Venice!!!!  :D
I'm so excited!!!!!  :p
