Hi Mummy,
finally the weather changed!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7017/6776580245_1151c4bfbb_o.jpg

We had to walk to the pet shop to buy cat treats. They are not for me but for the ferrets.

Remscheid, Germany - 27th January 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
in the afternoon we took a walk with a friend. We left the city centre and walked downhill through an allotment garden area. You can see that the city is surrounded by woodland and rural areas.

They are having lovely houses here. This one is a typical "Bergisches" house, covered with slate, with green shutters.

Remscheid, Germany - 29th January 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
in the morning we took a walk with Katja and two of her friends. Katja promised me that I would see Muengsten Bridge, Germany's highest railway bridge. We went into the forest.

There is an outlook pavilion high above the valley of the river Wupper. You have a good overlook across the valley of the river Wupper with Muengsten Bridge.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7167/6781924991_8b548861d9_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7020/6781925317_53de7f97f0_o.jpg

There are rocks along our path, little waterfalls running down everywhere.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7147/6781925553_7895647e7d_o.jpg

We were nearly under the bridge!

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7163/6781925775_b6481a4ca0_o.jpg

We went downhill than towards the river.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6781926007_fa22fed163_o.jpg

We found some rocks with engraved patterns, a tabletop game this time, nine men's morris.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7166/6781911689_2f938cbff8_o.jpg

In the meantime we crossed the river and walked back towards Muengsten Bridge. This side of the river bank is really steep, rocks and steep slopes.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7035/6781926231_577152efc2_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6781926479_cbf26e811e_o.jpg

We reached the leisure park underneath the bridge than. The bridge was built in early 20th century, finished in 1906 A.D. It is 107 m high, overspanning the valley of the river Wupper which is marking the border between Remscheid and the neighbour city Solingen. It is about 480 m long. There will be extended repar and restoration works in the coming years.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7020/6781926685_9ee19309c1_o.jpg

When the weather is good lots of kids are playing here in the shallow river, Katja told us. After six weeks with heavy rainfall the Wupper is not a shallow river any more.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7025/6781926875_35f091a2af_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7029/6781927093_26268952e8_o.jpg

There is also a new restaurant in the leisure park, it looks as rusty as the bridge :)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7019/6781927299_387a4775a6_o.jpg

This was a very interesting trip today.

Solingen, Germany - 31st January 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we visited a medieval castle in the neighbour city Solingen, Schloss Burg, It is situated high upon a hill above the River Wupper.

We went into the courtyard and found a lovely half-timbered part of the castle.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7147/6797346845_4b35308196_o.jpg

Schloss Burg was built in 1133 by Count Adolf I von Berg on a hill above the river Wupper. That's why this region is called "Bergisches Land". Many people believe that it's name refers to the landscape with hills and valleys. (For those who do not speak German: The German word for mountain or hill is "Berg", so many people think that the name "Bergisches Land" means "land with many hills" )

About a hundred years later it was enlarged by Count Engelberg II von Berg. This is the guy on the horse in the courtyard.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7001/6797347371_14f42730c0_o.jpg

In Thirty Years War (17th century) large parts of the castle were destroyed. It was rebuilt then, but it was used for industrial purposes for many years. In the end of the 19th century they began to rebuild it as it appears today.

In the castle courtyard you can find souvenir shops and shops whose owners are doing an "old" handcraft, for example handmade brushes, brooms, soap, lovely yarns and wooden knitting needles, toys like swords and helmets and much more.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7020/6797347591_014c2186bc_o.jpg

The round tower was the powder tower, it was restored about two years ago.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7163/6797347869_fd1bfa1c1d_o.jpg

You can overlook the valley of the river Wupper from this high point, also the valley between Remscheid and Solingen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7032/6797348183_c016bfcf29_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7173/6797348501_b98e9666ee_o.jpg

We walked into the forest than. A last look to Schloss Burg ...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7158/6797348763_36d87bf9b0_o.jpg

Here we found another outlook pavilion. Indeed, it is a "twin" of the outlook pavilion I saw on Sunday, built by the same architect.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7161/6797349069_27dcba9d1b_o.jpg

From here you can see how high above the valley level we were.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7161/6797349297_57361b707c_o.jpg

We made a side-trip to a dam, Sengbach Talsperre. Katja wanted to have a look at the concrete wall, it is restored at the moment.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7019/6797349631_200c173e19_o.jpg

We walked back to the car than, walking through a rural district called Höhrath.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6797349793_6841549293_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7161/6797350079_7b3e6f82f0_o.jpg

We had to hurry than, it was already getting dark :)

Remscheid-Lennep, Germany - 1st February 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we visited Katja's sister today. She is living in one of the historic districts of Remscheid, in Lennep. It is extremely cold outside.

We took a walk in the late morning, through the suburbs towards a restaurant for lunch.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7163/6803061659_db9f6a4a9b_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7019/6803061877_17d4d731e3_o.jpg

You can find lots of woodland areas and rural areas in Remscheid.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7164/6803062025_81e002d5d2_o.jpg

The A1 motorway is crossing the valley.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7144/6803062191_ac80bcbfcc_o.jpg

All puddles and little creeks in the roadside ditches are frozen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7001/6803062437_493f44e57a_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7150/6803062645_2b8c6b8b0b_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7018/6803062907_fc6f6ca7c3_o.jpg

We reached our lunch destination in an industrial park close to the A1 motorway.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7145/6803063275_bbabfb918f_o.jpg

Afterwards we took a walk in the old town of Lennep.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7014/6803063499_7c3e5a5326_o.jpg

Most of the houses were built after 1746 A.D., when there was the last great fire which destroyed nearly the complete old town. Many houses are under monument protection.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7015/6803063705_9163d470b2_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7144/6803063929_c9f9dc2532_o.jpg

This area with the market place was refurbished in 1989 A.D.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7023/6803064235_53cd0fdbd9_o.jpg

You can find extremely narrow lanes here, no car can pass through.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7033/6803064539_b79f4a39a3_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7019/6803064821_bb7fab7552_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7162/6803065095_757255b283_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7165/6803065313_ff1b5c9482_o.jpg

The founder of the X-rays, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, was born in Lennep in 1845 A.D. The German Roentgen Museum is situated here, the house of his birth is also still existing.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7149/6803065817_a3dbf3460d_o.jpg

We went back to Katja's sister than. In the background you can see Katja's former school.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7021/6803066053_ab3b7a9d71_o.jpg

Bye for now

Remscheid, at home, Germany - 2nd February 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
it is extremely cold in Germany - have a look at the thermometer.
- 12°c means 10.4°F. We all need warm clothings now. Katja suggested a warm scarf for me.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7157/6806280275_72bba766fa_o.jpg

... a  little bit later ...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7158/6806280625_edc73ef615_o.jpg

Now we are prepared for the cold outside.

Solingen, Germany - 4th February 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
we went to Solingen today, the neighbour city. Katja's daughter had to settle something at work. In the meantime we had a look at the "Südpark" (Southern Park) which was built on a former railway track for freight trains. The buildings are the old goods depots, now you can find artist shops, galleries and bars there, also artwork.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7023/6818137507_be5d225601_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7011/6818137747_bd069d68be_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7159/6818137955_8f223716d4_o.jpg

We went to the station than to get back, not home yet, but to Muengsten Bridge to take a walk.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7001/6818138209_97527a71e9_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7158/6818138425_1de0e7f035_o.jpg

We got out of the train just before Muengsten Bridge.  We walked downhill to the valley of the river Wupper. On our way we found some playgrounds, like those rocking sheep :)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7002/6818132393_dbc69a29f1_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7012/6818132647_56491cda62_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6818139049_a01c4f8b6b_o.jpg

There are "normal" walking paths, meandering down the steep slope, but you can also take the straight way down, with the help of those ropes.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7018/6818139373_7de08ee425_o.jpg

Back on the Remscheid side of the valley .... all the little creeks running down the slope are frozen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7012/6818139609_922c270d1c_o.jpg

We found an extremely large old beech in the forest, too large to take a photo of it :)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6818139805_366c59f5a6_o.jpg

There is a cemetary nearly in the forest, you can find a memorial for the dead of World War I here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6818140125_a1e4b334e4_o.jpg

You can see the city centre of Remscheid in the background. Can you see the church tower? We are living really close to it.

Remscheid, Germany - 11th February 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,
today we took a walk in the late afternoon in the city centre. We walked along the "Route of Tools" (Trasse des Werkzeugs), a former railway track, now built to a lane for pedestrians and cyclists. This lane is following the former freight train track from the central station to the district Hasten, many industrial companies were situated along this track, some are still nowadays.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7192/6858016259_29c999f70f_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7066/6858016431_5c22e997c5_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7204/6858016603_915340057d_o.jpg

We found a resting area, you can find some seats here (it was too cold to sit longer than 30 seconds on the metal bench).

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7186/6858187815_a6903e5e42_o.jpg

The lane was sponsored by local companies, mostly tool producing companies - that's why it is called "Route of Tools". Remscheid is famous for its tool producing industry for centuries. You can find large signs with the logos of the sponsoring companies.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7201/6858016841_1dba138b81_o.jpg

This is the former slaughterhouse, the whole complex is under monument protection nowadays.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7181/6858017215_985dc4e8d6_o.jpg

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7184/6858017403_b285be1229_o.jpg

The closer we came towards Hasten, the more the lane seemed to be a park or a walking path in a forest.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7056/6858017649_0dd8451b24_o.jpg

I found those funny wrench patterns, stamped into the tarmac.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7191/6858017905_65aac79f0e_o.jpg

We left the Route of Tools and went home through the municipal park.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7049/6858018129_0870b86f1a_o.jpg

This monument is dedicated to the dead of several wars which took place before WW I.

Remscheid / Wuppertal, Germany - 12th February 2012

By: olgamaus

[font=tahoma][color=darkblue]Hi Mummy,
today we met friends to take a longer hiking tour to the neighbour town Wuppertal. We planned to visit the Wuppertal Brewhouse once more-

First we had to walk towards the valley between Remscheid and Wuppertal, it is called "Morsbachtal", like the creek (Morsbach) running through it. It seems that all the water on earth's surface was frozen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7060/6864135053_58b57585cd_o.jpg

This is the Morsbach (Morsbach creek).

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7037/6864135449_5080293166_o.jpg

This pond in front of an historic industrial site is also frozen.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7184/6864135751_c065805010_o.jpg

This cute little house was restored in the last years, Katja told me.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7043/6864136013_2f831a72b6_o.jpg

Than we had to climb from the bottom of the valley towards Wuppertal-Cronenberg. Can you see the city centre of Remscheid on the hill in background? We started our trip there :)

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7057/6864136365_b9cbfe263e_o.jpg

This is a typical German garden with garden gnomes :D

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7176/6864136671_8a188bf53b_o.jpg

From now we walked along the "Sambatrasse", also a former railway track, following a route though the forest from Wuppertal-Cronenberg to the zoo quarter in Wuppertal.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7054/6864136887_9e46ee7328_o.jpg

This historic train is placed here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7064/6864137229_be0daa792c_o.jpg

So many distance data, but my home town is not among them.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7066/6864137611_33738125b8_o.jpg

When we finally reached the brewhouse we were really thirsty, so we ordered large beers immediately.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7203/6864169729_dd52e7d2b3_o.jpg

Cheers!

Later we went home by train.

Remscheid / Solingen, Germany - 25th February 2012

By: olgamaus

Hi Mummy,

we took a last walk today, along rover Wuppere once more. We started on the Remscheid side, walking steep downhill. In the valley you can see the district Solingen-Unterburg with a historic church and a graveyard.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7203/6782785656_19f822e5ae_o.jpg

Unterburg is one of the historic districts, you can find many restaurants here.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7178/6782785774_5eaf2c45b6_o.jpg

We followed river Wupper, along the slope of the valley.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7207/6928904515_13155771bd_o.jpg

Muengsten Bridge came into sight, later we walked underneath it.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7208/6928904653_96a6523dc4_o.jpg

Although the extreme cold is over there are still tose patrtly frozen waterfalls.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7070/6782786144_a6a3d3fa6b_o.jpg

The path in the forest was extremely muddy, thankfully I was sitting in Katja's bag most of the time!

Sacramento, California, USA - 9th March 2012

By: kcrawfish

Hi everyone!

I am home!  Mummy and I decided to surprise her guests Little R2 and Tuli by releasing me from my travelope at bedtime.  It was so great to meet them, tell them stories of Germany at Christmastime with olgamaus and show them my pretty amazing souvenirs.  I especially like my German-English dictionary, which helped me so much in communicating with the locals.  Well, okay, not that much.  But they all welcomed me even with my poor German -- it didn't hurt that their English was sooo good and that the heraldic animal of the region is a lion just like me, only less ferocious  and with an extra tail.  :cyclops:  And Miss Kate is thrilled to have a photo of me and Clyde for our fridge.

Thank you for everything, my dear host Miss Katja!  Mummy, too, wants to thank you for all the goodies!  She was most surprised and happy!  :D

Hello everyone!

On Saturday, Miss Kate and her friend decided to take Tuli, Little R2 and me to Auburn to have a picnic in the foothills.

We also brought Beans the Dog with us, but only his butt would stand still, so here:
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i475/kcrawfish/TV%20-%20Tuli/IMG_4327.jpg

We had a lovely picnic in Foresthill.  We were looking due east at the Sierra Nevada mountains.  Somewhere out there is Lake Tahoe, but we can't see it.  It's amazing that there's nothing but trees between us and Lake Tahoe and Nevada.
http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/i475/kcrawfish/TV%20-%20Tuli/IMG_4346.jpg

Four new friends moved in to the picnic table next door.  Chico and Big Red Chief.  One of their owners is even running for President of the United States.  You can see all 4 on this video.

It was a perfect Spring day.  :)

Love, Aslan
