Nerja, Spain - 6th February 2012

By: iloveletters

Because it was already dark when we arrived
at the hotel we took our  first day here to discover the hotel and
area here.

We have a great room with a balcony and view on the Mediterranean Sea! Look at that - blue sky and only a single cloud.

It is very very warm here. I love it! It was -20°C in Germany when we left and now it is +20°C here! I am glad that I am a vampire
who loves sun otherwise it would have been a shame to stay inside the room all day.

The hotel

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010186.jpg

was near the center of the town and we took a walk to
the famous lookout 'Balcon de Europa'. Here people  can read some
information about it:

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010084.jpg

All these palm trees!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010091.jpg

And then the beautiful view from the balcony onto the Sea.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010100.jpg

In December 1884 an earthquake hit the area and town and
therefore Alfonso XII visited Nerja in January 1885 and gave a
speech on the balcony. Today a statue commemorates this event.

Ok then, let's move on...

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010107.jpg

... through the little narrow streets in the town.

Nerja Caves, Spain - 6th February 2012

By: iloveletters

After a two hour walk through the beautiful countryside

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010120.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010122.jpg

we arrived at the Caves of Nerja.
These  caverns are one of Spain's major tourist attractions.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010126.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010128.jpg

As a bat I felt like home in these dark caves!
But since it was so dark and we were not allowed to use flash for
photogaphing you can only guess what to see here. Unfortunately!

The place was amazingly big with giant stalacites and stalacmites!
There is one column about 30 metres tall and is the largest in the
world. It is in the Guiness Book of Records.

The last stop on our first day here was the Burriana beach in Nerja.

We had to rest after the long walk, enjoyed and ice-cream and the sun!

Granada, Spain - 8th February 2012

By: iloveletters

To get to Granada we took the coach and started early at 8 am in the morning.
It took us about 1.5 hours to get to Granada.
We drove through the mountains and it got really colder going north.
It was only about  zero °C when we arrived in the city.
We started out walk at the Plaza de la Universidad.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010189.jpg

Next we visited the Hopital San Juan de Dios. As you can see from
the pictures the hospital is very old but it is still used today.

The cathedral of Malaga was built from 1523.
It used to be the first Renaissance style cathedral.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010204.jpg

Following the little streets with markets ...

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010209.jpg

... we walked up the hill  to the Alhambra Palace.
Alhambra means 'red fortress' and one theory says that because of
the red stone walls the palace was called like this.  The history
dates back to the 10th century. The Palace has been an UNESCO
world heritage site since 1984.

Torrox Costa, Spain - 9th February 2012

By: iloveletters

It was a very sunny day again and we walked to Torrox Costa along the beach and coast.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010244.jpg

I was always kept safe in a trouser pocket and  could rest and see the surroundings while my host was walking and walking and walking....

On the way back the sky was a little darker and we were afraid it would rain.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010272.jpg

But, no, back in Nerja it was still warm and dry.

Malaga, Spain - 10th February 2012

By: iloveletters

Our last stop during these holidays was Malaga.
The town is well-known because Picasso was born here.
We did not have enough time though to visit his birth house and the Picasso Museum.
I guess I have to return one day....

But let's take a look at the map to decide what else to see.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010282.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010283.jpg

Malaga Cathedral

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010285.jpg

The Roman Theatre

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010291.jpg

And the Alcazaba. It's  like a little version of the Alhambra.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010294.jpg

We had a beautiful view from the top over the town and the harbour.

I could have stayed here....

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010309.jpg

But no, we finished our day in the harbour area with a waffle and coffe!

Mechterstädt, Germany - 14th February 2012

By: iloveletters

Finally back home in Mechterstädt / Thuringia
we had a look at the toyvoyagers site to see what was going on
while we were away.

And I could not believe my eyes: Me somewhere else!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010322.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010323.jpg

I have got a twin! I didn't know and have to find out more about him later!

We also read the newspaper to get updated.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010333.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010330.jpg

A look at the weather forecast confirmed what we thought: It is still
very warm in Spain and cold here in Germany. I want to go back!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010331.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010332.jpg

But there is still only little snow here on the ground.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010338.jpg

I decided it is better to stay inside at the moment.
Bonnie and Clyde, the two cats living here, thought so, too, and I joined them.
Their fur is so soft and warm.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010328.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010335.jpg

At least I had a look at an aerial  view of the village where I am now.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010339.jpg

Can you see where I point with the biro? This is the house my host lives in.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010343.jpg

I will discover more of the village the next days!

See you!

Gotha, Castle Friedenstein, Germany - 17th February 2012

By: iloveletters

Today we went to Gotha and castle Friedenstein.
It was built in the 17th century and is one of the best kept Baroque buildings of this kind.

There is also a large park which is modelled like an English garden.
Maybe we will return when the weather is better and take a stroll.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010348.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010349.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010346.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010347.jpg

Did you realize that the two towers have different roofs?
That is because there once was a fire and they rebuilt the roof differently.
Otherwise the castle is very symmetrical, as you can see inside.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010351.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010350.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010354.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010353.jpg

Opposite the castle is the natural history museum, or the building used to be used as such.
At the moment they are restructering the exhibitions and the museum is closed.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010345.jpg

Near the castle I found the  Studnitz-Pyramide, a tomb for Hans Adam von Studnitz.

Finsterbergen, Germany - 18th February 2012

By: iloveletters

Since it is Carnival season at the moment we went to a Carnival party.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010360.jpg

Finsterbergen is a small village near Gotha but Carnival is big!
They have a Carnival Club called FKK (Finsterberger Karneval Klub -
the German readers will get the joke with FKK...), and here is their logo.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010362.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010364.jpg

First the Carnival Prince and Princess entered the stage.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010366.jpg

And then we had 4 hours of fun, music, songs, rhymes and and and!

A great evening out!

Mechterstädt, Germany - 19th February 2012

By: iloveletters

After the inspiration yesterday evening
we decided to have our own Carnival party at home!

First we needed some decoration.
Noisy had sent some crackers with my package and they came in  very handy!

I  pulled hard but the cracker did not go off.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010375.jpg

Then I asked Dancer for help and we pulled and pulled - but the cracker did not go off.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010376.jpg

We asked Shesh for help and we pulled and pulled and pulled -  and finally
the cracker went off and we were all covered in paper streamers!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010379.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010380.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010381.jpg

Now we needed costumes.
One of us decided to go as Santa, one was a mummy and one of us was a ghost.
Mom and Dad, can you guess who is who?!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010383.jpg

For a real Carnival in Germany you need doughnuts!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010384.jpg

Mmmmhhhhhh, they were so yummy!

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010385.jpg

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010388.jpg

We had a great party!

Erfurt, Germany - 25th February 2012

By: iloveletters

At the moment there is the 'Thüringen Ausstellung' - a fair - in Erfurt. We went there to discover all about food, living, housing and more in Thuringia.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010389.jpg

A lot of people were there. We looked at all the stalls.

Today we said Goodbye to Dancer. He started his journey around the world and his first stop is Mexico! I do hope he arrives safely and wish him a pleasant and interesting stay!

Mechterstädt, Thuringia, Germany - 27th February 2012

By: iloveletters

I took my last days here in Thuringia to have a look around the village.

First I looked again where exactly Thuringia is.

http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f244/iloveletters/Stoker/P1010429.jpg

Then I got some more information about it on Wikipedia.
There live about 2.2 million people here and the state capital is Erfurt.

This is the coat of arms of the state:

We then walked through the village a little.

As you can see from the map it is very small with about 1000 inhabitants.

We came across the village hall

the mayor's office

and there is even a little grocery shop.

Waltershausen, Germany - 28th February 2012

By: iloveletters

Today my host took me to Waltershausen where she works.

This is 'her' school.

It is a lovely little campus with a park in which you can find two busts of famous teachers.

After school we went to the town center. Waltershausen is not
really big. We took a stroll and I saw the town hall on the market square

the town church

and this the 'Klaustor', an old town gate.
